A maze-like ancient city in the heart of Kashgar covering about 4.25 square kilometres, with over two hundred narrow alleys crisscrossing each other. It reflects Uyghur culture and Islamic architecture through its decorated mud-brick houses and courtyards, and is among the best places to experience Uyghur customs. Nearby stands the Id Kah Mosque, built in 1442, one of the largest in China and a magnificent example of Central Asian Islamic architecture.
