The site where the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang lived as a reclusive farmer-scholar from his late teens to his late twenties, before becoming chief advisor to the Shu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period. It was here that Liu Bei made his famous 'Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage' to seek Zhuge Liang's counsel, an episode immortalised in the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a symbol of persistence and respect for talent. The scenic area today holds reconstructed thatched cottages, memorial temples and shrines honouring him, and sits about 13 km west of historic Xiangyang city.
