🚇 Getting to the city centre
About 16 km northwest of central Ürümqi. Airport bus ~30-40 min (~CNY 15); taxi ~CNY 40-60, 25-35 min. Metro Line 1 runs near the airport (Diwopu / airport area).
- Ürümqi Metro Line 1 Airport (Diwopu area) (国际机场)
Xinjiang's largest air gateway and China's hub to Central Asia and the Middle East, renamed Tianshan in 2025. International flights to Dubai, Istanbul, Tashkent and more. Xinjiang is majority Uyghur Muslim — halal food everywhere and prayer rooms at the airport.
🔄 Getting from the airport to the train stations
Ürümqi Railway Station: The high-speed station sits directly on Metro Line 1, which serves the airport, so ride Line 1 with no transfer to Ürümqi Station; about 30 minutes for ¥7 (fares were free under a 2025 promotion), the fastest and cheapest. A taxi is about ¥40.
Ürümqi South Railway Station: This downtown station is not yet on the metro, so use the airport bus into the city for about ¥10, or Line 1 with a bus transfer, or a taxi at about ¥40 in roughly 40 minutes.
