Chapter 90
Now, this Venerable Zhi Zhen of Mount Wutai was, in truth, a living Buddha of the former Song dynasty, one who knew the events of the past and the future. Several years ago, he had already known that Lu Zhishen was a man who could transcend the body and reach enlightenment, but whose worldly attachments were not yet exhausted—he still had to repay the debts of lives he had taken. Therefore, he had instructed him to go and walk this path in the mortal world. Lu Zhishen himself had deep spiritual roots and still possessed the heart of the Way. Now he conceived the wish to come and pay respects to his original master and engage in meditation. Song Jiang, too, had long possessed a good heart, and for this reason he wished to accompany Lu Zhishen to visit Venerable Zhi Zhen.
At that time, Song Jiang and his commanders, taking only their personal attendants, together with Lu Zhishen, arrived at the foot of Mount Wutai. They stationed their troops and set up camp, then sent men ahead to announce their arrival at the monastery. Song Jiang and his brothers all removed their armor and military gear and dressed in their everyday clothes, ascending the mountain on foot. When they reached the gate, they heard the monastery bell being struck and the drums being beaten inside. The monks came out to welcome them and stepped forward to pay their respects to Song Jiang, Lu Zhishen, and the others. Among them were many who recognized Lu Zhishen, and when they saw this great company of commanders following Song Jiang in orderly fashion, they were all astonished. The Head Seat of the Hall reported to Song Jiang, saying, "The Venerable One is in meditation and cannot receive you. I pray the general will not take offense." He then invited Song Jiang and his party to rest briefly in the Visitors' Quarters. After tea had been served, an attendant came out and said, "The Venerable One has just returned from meditation and awaits you in the Abbot's Chamber. He requests that the general enter." Song Jiang and his party of over a hundred men proceeded to the Abbot's Chamber to pay their respects to Venerable Zhi Zhen. The old Venerable hastily descended the steps to greet them and invited them up into the hall. After they had all exchanged courtesies, Song Jiang observed the monk: he was past sixty, his eyebrows and hair were entirely white, his frame was striking and extraordinary, and he bore the unmistakable appearance of one who had left the mountains of Tiantai Fangguang. As the company entered the Abbot's Chamber, Song Jiang invited Venerable Zhi Zhen to take the upper seat, and they burned incense and did obeisance. When all the commanders had finished their prostrations, Lu Zhishen stepped forward, placed incense, and bowed. Venerable Zhi Zhen said, "My disciple has been gone these several years—killing and burning was not easy." Lu Zhishen was silent. Song Jiang stepped forward and said, "Long have I heard of the Venerable's pure virtue, but alas, my worldly connections are shallow and I had no way to behold your venerable countenance. Now, having been commanded to campaign against the Liao, I have come to this place and am able to pay my respects to the great abbot of the hall—the greatest fortune of my life. Though Brother Lu Zhishen has killed and set fires, his loyal heart has never harmed the good. Now I have led my brothers here to pay respects to the Master." Venerable Zhi Zhen said, "From time to time eminent monks have come here, and we have also discussed worldly affairs in passing. Long have I heard that the general acts on Heaven's behalf and has loyalty and righteousness rooted in his heart. My disciple Zhishen follows the general—how could there be any error?" Song Jiang expressed his thanks without end.
Lu Zhishen then produced a package of gold, silver, silk, and brocade to offer to his original master. Venerable Zhi Zhen said, "Where did my disciple obtain these things? I absolutely cannot accept wealth gained through unrighteous means." Lu Zhishen reported, "These are things I have accumulated through repeated rewards and grants. I myself have no use for them, and have brought them especially to present to my original master, to be used for the monastery's purposes." The Venerable said, "It would be difficult for the community to consume them. I shall have a Tripitaka of scriptures prepared for you, to destroy your sins and bring you early to good fruit." Lu Zhishen bowed in thanks and withdrew. Song Jiang also took gold, silver, silk, and brocade and presented them to Venerable Zhi Zhen, but the Venerable firmly refused to accept them. Song Jiang said, "If my master will not receive them, let the Treasury Steward prepare a vegetarian feast and offer it to the monks of this monastery." That day they lodged for the night at the monastery on Mount Wutai, and the Venerable hosted them with a vegetarian feast—of which no more need be said.
Now on the following day, when the Treasury Steward had prepared the feast, the bell was struck and the drums were beaten in the Dharma Hall of the Mount Wutai monastery. Venerable Zhi Zhen assembled the monks in the Dharma Hall to expound the Dharma and meditate. In a short while, all the monks of the monastery, wearing their kasayas and sitting mats, came and took their seats in the Dharma Hall. Song Jiang, Lu Zhishen, and all the commanders stood on either side. At the sound of the hand-bell, two red silk lanterns with bowls guided the Venerable up to his Dharma seat. When Venerable Zhi Zhen reached his seat, he first took a stick of incense and offered this prayer: "This stick of incense: I pray the Emperor's sacred life be equal to Heaven, and that all the people enjoy their occupations. I take another stick of incense: I pray that today's patron of the feast may be at peace in body and mind, and that his years be prolonged. I take another stick of incense: I pray that the nation may be at peace and the people tranquil, that the harvests may be abundant and the years fruitful, that the Three Teachings may flourish, and that the four directions may be at peace." When the prayers were finished, he sat upon his Dharma seat. The monks on both sides performed their salutations and then all stood at attention. Song Jiang stepped forward, burned incense, and bowed. Then he pressed his palms together and stepped forward to ask about meditation, saying, "I have a question and dare to ask my master: the time in this floating world is limited, the sea of suffering has no shore, the human body is exceedingly small, and birth and death are the greatest matters." Venerable Zhi Zhen then answered with a gatha:
For many years the six senses have bound you,
For long the four elements have entangled you.
Alas! In the flash of a flint spark,
How many somersaults have you turned!
Yi!
All the beings of the Jambudvipa world
Roar and howl in the pile of sand and mud.
When the Venerable had finished speaking the gatha, Song Jiang bowed and stood at attention. All the commanders stepped forward, burned incense, and bowed, making this vow: "We only wish that our brothers live and die together, and meet again in life after life!" When the incense had been burned, the monks withdrew, and the company was invited to the Cloud Hall to partake of the feast.
After the meal, Song Jiang and Lu Zhishen followed the Venerable to the Abbot's Chamber. That evening, in the course of casual conversation, Song Jiang sought instruction from the Venerable, saying, "This disciple and Lu Zhishen had wished to remain with our master for a few days and receive instruction in our foolish delusion, but since we command a great army, we dare not linger long. I truly do not understand your teachings. Now as we take our leave and return to the capital, what lies ahead for this disciple and all my brothers? I earnestly hope that our master will illuminate and transform us." Venerable Zhi Zhen ordered that paper and brush be brought, and he wrote a gatha of four lines:
When the wind rises, the wild geese's shadows flutter;
The eastern palace will not be reunited.
A single eye's merit is sufficient;
At the Twin Groves, blessings and longevity are complete.
He finished writing and handed it to Song Jiang, saying, "This concerns the general's life's affairs. Keep it secret and hidden, and in time it will prove true."
Song Jiang read it but did not understand its meaning. He again addressed the abbot: "This disciple is dull and ignorant, unable to comprehend the dharma words. I beg our teacher to explain clearly, so as to resolve my doubts and anxieties."
Abbot Zhizhen said, "These are karmic riddles couched in Chan language. You yourself must ponder them; they cannot be explained plainly."
Having spoken, the abbot called Zhi Shen forward and said: "My disciple, when you go hence, it will be a final parting regarding your future path, and the fruits of enlightenment are at hand for you! I give you four lines of gatha for you to keep and use for the rest of your life." The gatha read:
Capture when you meet Xia;
Seize upon encountering La.
Become complete upon hearing the tide;
Enter stillness upon seeing the signal.
Lu Zhishen bowed and received the gatha. He read it several times, tucked it away on his person, and bowed to thank his teacher. He rested there another night. The next day, Song Jiang, Lu Zhishen, Wu Yong, and the other chieftains took leave of the abbot and descended the mountain. The company came out of the temple, and Abbot Zhizhen along with the monks all escorted them outside the mountain gate to say farewell.
Let us not speak of the abbot and monks returning to the temple, but rather of Song Jiang and the other generals descending from Mount Wutai. They summoned the army and hastened onward like sparks. The generals returned to the front, where Lu Junyi, Gongsun Sheng, and others welcomed Song Jiang and his company, and all greeted one another. Song Jiang then told Lu Junyi and the others about the meditation and oath-taking at Mount Wutai. He showed the Chan language to Lu Junyi and Gongsun Sheng, but neither of them understood its meaning. Xiao Rang said, "The mysteries of Chan and dharma language—how could ordinary people fathom them?" All were astonished and perplexed.
Song Jiang issued orders to hasten the army's departure. The generals received the command and set the three armies in motion, advancing toward Tokyo. Wherever they passed, the soldiers did not disturb the people in the slightest. The common folk, supporting the old and carrying the young, came to see the royal army. Observing Song Jiang and the other generals in their heroic bearing, everyone praised them and all were filled with admiration. After traveling several days on the road, Song Jiang and his men reached a place called Shuanglin Town. The town residents, along with several farmers from nearby villages, all gathered to watch. Song Jiang and his brothers rode in a V-formation like wild geese, pairs riding side by side. As they proceeded, a chieftain in the front ranks suddenly dismounted from his saddle, and dragging a person from the crowd on the left, called out: "Brother, how are you here?" The two exchanged greetings and spoke together. Song Jiang's horse gradually drew near, and he saw that it was "The Prodigal" Yan Qing speaking with someone.
Yan Qing clasped his hands and said: "Brother Xu, this is Commander Song." Song Jiang reined in his horse and looked at the man. He had:
Bright double-pupiled eyes,
And eyebrows that parted like the character for "eight."
A seven-foot frame,
With a mustache of three tufts covering his mouth.
He wore a crepe black silk headband over his brow,
And a brown cloth robe with dark borders.
A multicolored Lü Gong sash was tied at his waist,
And on his feet were square-toed cloth shoes of blue.
He was certainly no common mediocrity,
But surely a lofty recluse of the mountains and woods.
Song Jiang saw that this man had a strange and distinguished appearance, with a spirit both vigorous and refined. He quickly dismounted and bowed deeply, saying: "May I ask the great name of this worthy gentleman?"
The man looked at Song Jiang and bowed at once: "I have long heard your name! Today I am able to pay my respects."
Song Jiang, flustered, returned the bow in haste and quickly raised him, saying: "This humble person is Song Jiang. How could I deserve such courtesy?"
The man said: "My name is Xu, given name Guanzhong. My ancestral home is Daming Prefecture, but I now dwell in the mountains and countryside. In the past, I was close friends with General Yan. I did not expect that after our parting, more than ten years would pass without us being able to reunite. Later, upon the rivers and lakes, I heard that Little Yi was serving under the general's command, and I admired him greatly. Now that I have heard the general has conquered the Liao and returned in triumph, I have come here to gaze upon him. To see all these heroes is the greatest fortune of my lifetime. I wish to invite Brother Yan to my humble cottage for a brief reunion. Would the general be willing to release him?"
Yan Qing also reported: "This little brother and Brother Xu have been long parted. I did not expect to meet him here. Since Brother Xu has graciously extended his invitation, this little brother can only go along. Elder brother, proceed with the generals, and this little brother will catch up afterward."
Song Jiang suddenly recalled and said: "Brother Yan Qing, you often spoke of this gentleman's heroic spirit and gall. It is only that I, Song Jiang, have been unfortunate in my fate and had no chance to meet him. Now that he has graciously favored us, dare I invite him to come along so that I may seek his counsel?"
Xu Guanzhong declined, saying: "The general is generous, loyal, and righteous. Xu has long wished to serve at your side, but my mother is over seventy years of age, and I dare not travel far from her."
Song Jiang said: "In that case, I dare not force you."
He then said to Yan Qing: "Brother, return soon, so that I need not worry here. Moreover, once we reach the capital, we may be summoned to an audience at any time."
Yan Qing said: "This little brother would never dare to disobey the commander's orders."
He also went to inform Lu Junyi, and the two sides took their leave. Song Jiang mounted his horse. The generals who had gone ahead were already a bowshot away. Seeing that Song Jiang was speaking with Guanzhong, they all reined in their horses and waited. Song Jiang then spurred his horse forward and advanced with the generals.
Let the narrative branch in two directions. Yan Qing called a personal attendant soldier, who packed the luggage and prepared another horse, while Yan Qing gave his own fine steed for Xu Guanzhong to ride. At an inn ahead, they removed their military armor and accoutrements and put on their everyday clothes. The two men each mounted a horse, with the soldier carrying the bundle and following behind. They left Shuanglin Town and traveled along a small road to the northwest. After passing several farmsteads and wooded ridges ahead lay a mountain path winding and twisting. The two spoke of their old friendship and the courage in their hearts. Having emerged from the mountain path, they crossed a large stream. After traveling some thirty li, Xu Guanzhong pointed and said: "Within that towering mountain lies my humble cottage." They traveled another dozen li before reaching the mountain. The peaks were tall and elegant, the streams clear and pure. As Yan Qing gazed upon the mountain scenery, he did not notice that the sky was already growing late. He saw only:
The setting sun, trailing mist, gives birth to emerald haze;
Broken clouds reflected in the water scatter crimson light.
This mountain was originally called Mount Dapi, and the Great Yu, the sage of ancient times, had come to this place when he channeled the course of the Yellow River. The *Book of Documents* states: "He came to Dapi." This is the proof. Today it belongs to Junxian County in the Daming Prefecture. Enough of this digression.
Now, Xu Guanzhong led Yan Qing around several mountain bends and arrived at a mountain hollow, where there was a level, open area covering several *li*. Amidst the trees, two or three thatched cottages were visible. Among them were several thatched huts facing south beside a stream. Outside, bamboo fences surrounded them, the wicker gate half-closed. Tall bamboo, verdant pines, crimson maples, and emerald cypresses stood dense in front and behind. Xu Guanzhong pointed and said, "This humble abode is my snail-shell dwelling." Yan Qing saw that inside the bamboo fence, a village boy with yellow hair, wearing a cotton padded jacket, was gathering dried pine branches and knots from the ground and piling them under the eaves of the thatched cottage. Hearing the sound of hoofbeats, he stood up and looked out, exclaiming in surprise, "How could horses pass through here?" Looking more carefully, he saw that the master was on the horse behind. He hastily ran out of the gate, stood with hands clasped, and stared blankly. It turned out that when the horses had been prepared for the journey, Xu Guanzhong had said no bells were needed, so they had only been noticed when they were very close. The two dismounted and walked through the bamboo fence. The soldier tied up the horses. The two entered the thatched hall and sat down as host and guest. After tea, Guanzhong told the soldier who had come with them to remove the saddles and bridles, lead the two horses to the thatched stable behind, tell the boy to find some fodder to feed them, and still had the soldier rest in the front side room. Yan Qing also went to pay his respects to Guanzhong's old mother. Guanzhong took Yan Qing to the thatched cottage facing east beside the west. They pushed open the back window, which overlooked a clear stream, and the two sat leaning against the window sill.
Guanzhong said, "My humble dwelling is narrow and crude—brother, please do not laugh at it!" Yan Qing replied, "The mountains are bright and the waters beautiful—it keeps your little brother too busy to take it all in. Truly a rare find." Guanzhong then asked a few things about the Liao campaign. After some time, the boy lit a lamp, closed the window lattice, brought out a table, and laid down five or six dishes of vegetables, then carried out a plate of chicken, a plate of fish, and two kinds of wild fruits stored at home, and heated a pot of wine. Guanzhong poured a cup and handed it to Yan Qing, saying: "I specially invited you here—how can country brew and wild vegetables be fit to serve a guest?" Yan Qing thanked him, saying: "I am undeserving of such trouble." After several cups of wine, the moonlight outside the window was bright as day. Yan Qing pushed open the window to look, and there was another kind of pure charm. The clouds were light, the wind still, the moon white, the stream clear—the reflection of water and the light of mountains filled the room. Yan Qing praised it endlessly, saying: "In the old days at Daming Prefecture, you and I were the closest of friends. Ever since you took the military examination, we have not seen each other. Yet you have found such a wonderful retreat—how supremely elegant! While a wretch like your humble brother campaigns east and west, when can we ever have a single day of leisure?" Guanzhong laughed and said: "Song Jiangong and the all the generals are heroes who cover the world, corresponding to the stars above, and now they have awed and subdued the fierce barbarians. As for someone like Xu who hides in a desolate mountain like a snail, how could I measure up to you in the slightest? Besides, there are several points about me that are out of step with the times—I have often seen traitorous cliques monopolize power and deceive the court, so I have lost all ambition to advance, and have wandered along the rivers and lakes. In the several places I have visited, I have also paid considerable attention." Having spoken, he laughed heartily, washed the cups, and poured again. Yan Qing took twenty taels of silver and offered them to Guanzhong, saying: "A humble gift—just a small token of my feelings." Guanzhong firmly refused to accept it. Yan Qing again urged Guanzhong, saying: "Brother, with your talents and strategy, come with your little brother to the capital, look for an opportunity, and secure a position for yourself." Guanzhong sighed and said: "Today the wicked and evil hold power, envying the worthy and jealous of the capable. Those who are like ghosts and demons all wear tall hats and broad sashes; the loyal and upright are all trapped and persecuted. My ambitions have long since turned to ash. When the day of success and fame arrives, brother, you too should look for a way to retreat. As the ancients said: 'When the carved birds are fine, the good bow is put away.'" Yan Qing nodded and sighed. The two talked until midnight before they rested.
The next morning, after washing, breakfast was promptly laid out. Guanzhong invited Yan Qing to eat, then invited him to roam the mountain front and back. Yan Qing climbed high and gazed out, seeing only layered peaks and endless ridges, mountains on all sides—only the sounds of birds above and below, but no trace of human passage. Counting the households living in the mountain, there were only some twenty-odd families. Yan Qing said: "This place rivals Peach Blossom Spring." Yan Qing was so absorbed in watching the mountain scenery that it grew late that day, and he stayed another night.
The next day, Yan Qing took leave of Guanzhong, saying: "I fear the Vanguard Song will be worried about me—so I take my leave here." Guanzhong saw him to the door. Guanzhong said, "Brother, wait a moment!" In no time, the village boy came out carrying a hand scroll. Guanzhong took it and handed it to Yan Qing, saying: "These are a few crude paintings of mine from recent days. When you reach the capital, look at them carefully—perhaps in the future they may be of some use." Yan Qing thanked him and had the soldier tie it onto his pack. The two were reluctant to part and walked together another one or two *li*. Yan Qing said: "'Though I escort you a thousand *li*, we must part in the end'—do not trouble yourself to come so far. We shall meet again another day." The two parted, each heavy-hearted.
Yan Qing watched until Xu Guanzhong had gone far back, then mounted his horse. He told the soldier to mount as well, and they set off together. In no time at all, they arrived at the Eastern Capital. It happened that Vanguard Song had encamped his troops at Chenqiao Post Station, awaiting the imperial edict. Yan Qing entered the camp to report—no more of this.
Now it must be told that Grand Marshal Su and Military Commissioner Zhao had first led their troops into the city and reported Song Jiang's achievements to the Son of Heaven. A dispatch arrived saying that Vanguard Song Jiang and his generals were returning with the army from their campaign and had already reached the passes. Military Commissioner Zhao came forward to report on the toils Song Jiang and his generals had endured at the border. When the Son of Heaven heard this, he praised them greatly and issued an imperial edict commanding the Gentleman-in-Waiting of the Imperial Gate to summon Song Jiang and the others for an audience at court. They were all ordered to enter the city in full armor. Song Jiang and the other generals obeyed the imperial edict, donning their armor, fastening their military belts, wearing helmets and breastplates, dressed in brocade jackets, and hanging gold and silver tablets at their waists. They entered through the East Flowering Gate and proceeded to the Hall of Literary Virtue to have their audience with the Son of Heaven. They performed the ritual obeisance, paid their respects, and three times cried, "Long live the Emperor!" The Son of Heaven looked upon Song Jiang and his generals, all heroic figures clad in brocade robes and gold sashes, with only Wu Yong, Gongsun Sheng, Lu Zhishen, and Wu Song wearing their ordinary garb. The Son of Heaven was greatly pleased and said: "We are well aware of the hardships you endured in the campaign and your labors at the frontier. Many were wounded, and We have been deeply troubled." Song Jiang bowed again and reported: "By the boundless fortune of Your Majesty, though some of us generals were wounded, all are now unharmed. The rebels have surrendered and the frontier is at peace. This is entirely due to the majesty and virtue of Your Majesty. What merit have we?" He bowed again in thanks. The Son of Heaven specially ordered the provincial and secretariat officials to deliberate on titles of nobility. Grand Preceptor Cai Jing and Military Commissioner Tong Guan deliberated and reported: "As for titles for Song Jiang and the others, permit us to consider the matter and report back." The Son of Heaven approved their request and further commanded the Court of Imperial Banquets to prepare a grand feast, personally bestowing upon Song Jiang one brocade robe, one suit of golden armor, and one steed of fine stock; and upon Lu Junyi and those below, gold and silk, all to be drawn from the imperial treasury. Song Jiang and his generals had finished expressing thanks for the imperial favor and left the palace precincts. They all went to the West Flowering Gate, mounted their horses, and returned to camp to rest, awaiting the imperial edict. Before they knew it, several days had passed, yet Cai Jing, Tong Guan, and the others went nowhere to deliberate on titles—they merely delayed and procrastinated.
Now it must be told that Song Jiang was sitting idly in camp, discussing with Military Adviser Wu Yong the rise and fall of kingdoms through the ages, when Dai Zong and Shi Xiu arrived in plain clothes to report. "We brothers were sitting bored in camp today, so we went for a stroll with Brother Shi Xiu and have come to let you know," they said. Song Jiang said, "Return to camp early. I'll wait for you all to share a few cups." Dai Zong and Shi Xiu left the Chenqiao post station and walked slowly northward. After passing through several streets and markets, they suddenly saw a large stone tablet by the side of the road. On the tablet were three characters: "Character Creation Platform," with several lines of smaller characters above, though they were indistinct from weathering. Dai Zong examined it closely and said, "This is where Cangjie created the written characters." Shi Xiu laughed and said, "We have no use for him." The two laughed and walked on further. They came to a place that was a large open space strewn with rubble. To the north stood a stone archway with a flat stone slab engraved with the three characters "Bolang City." Dai Zong was lost in thought for a moment, then said, "So this is where the Marquis of Liu struck at the First Emperor." Dai Zong clicked his tongue in admiration and said, "What a fine Marquis!" Shi Xiu said, "It's only a pity that the hammer missed!" The two sighed with regret, and as they talked, they walked on northward. They were now more than twenty li from camp. Shi Xiu said, "We've wasted half the day in this blasted idleness. Let's find somewhere to get a bowl of wine and then return to camp." Dai Zong said, "Isn't that an inn up ahead?" The two went into the inn and chose a bright seat by the window. Dai Zong rapped on the table and called, "Bring wine!" The waiter set out five or six dishes of vegetables and asked, "How much wine would you gentlemen like?" Shi Xiu said, "First bring two measures of wine. For food, just bring whatever's good—don't hold back." Presently the waiter poured two measures of wine, along with a plate of beef, a plate of mutton, and a plate of young chicken. As the two sat drinking and chatting, they saw a man carrying an umbrella and a staff, a bundle on his back, his dark jacket hitched up, a purse tied at his waist, cloth wrappings on his legs, and hemp shoes with eight laces. He came into the inn panting and out of breath, set down his umbrella and bundle, sat down at a seat, and called, "Quick, bring some wine and meat!" The waiter poured one measure of wine and set out two or three dishes of vegetables. The man said, "Don't be so finicky. Quickly cut a plate of meat. I need to eat and get on my way into the city on official business." He took the wine and gulped it down. Dai Zong watched him out of the corner of his eye and thought to himself, "This blasted fellow is a government agent. I wonder what blasted business he's about?" He clasped his hands and asked the man, "Brother, what business is so urgent?" The man ate his wine and meat while blurting out a few words in between. It came about that Song Jiang performed yet another extraordinary feat, and the lands of Fen and Qin were restored to Great Song. What exactly the man said will be told in the next chapter.
