白雲洞口,紫藤高掛綠蘿垂;
千峰競秀,夜深白鶴聽仙經;

Chapter 85
At that time, Ouyang, the Court Chamberlain, stepped forward and said: "These men under Song Jiang are all heroes and brave warriors from Mount Liang. Now in the Song dynasty, the boy emperor is under the thumb of four treacherous ministers—Cai Jing, Tong Guan, Gao Qiu, and Yang Jian—who abuse their power, are jealous of the worthy and able, and block the path of talent. They promote none but relatives and employ none but the wealthy. In the long run, how could they possibly tolerate men like these? In my humble opinion, Your Majesty should bestow official titles upon them, grant generous gifts of gold and silk, and reward them with many fine furs and sturdy horses. I volunteer to serve as envoy and persuade them to submit to our Great Liao. If Your Majesty could secure this force of men, seizing the Central Plains would be as easy as turning over one's hand. I do not presume to act on my own authority; I beg Your Majesty's wise judgment, and pray that you will not err."
When the Lord had finished listening, he said: "What you say has merit. You shall go as envoy, taking with you one hundred and eight fine horses, one hundred eight bolts of fine brocade, and an imperial edict from me, appointing Song Jiang Grand General Who Guards the Realm and Supreme Commander of All Liao Forces, and giving him a cup of gold and a pound of silver as tokens of good faith. Have the names of all his chieftains copied out and sent here, that we may confer official titles upon every one of them."
At this point, Commander-in-Chief Wanyan stepped forth from the ranks and addressed the Lord: "This band of rebels under Song Jiang—why bother to win them over? Your slave commands the Twenty-Eight Constellation Generals and the Eleven Luminaries Generals, with no lack of fierce troops and mighty warriors. How could we fail to defeat them? If these barbarians refuse to withdraw, your slave will personally lead an army to crush them."
The Lord replied: "You are indeed a hero, like a tiger with wings. If we add this force to our ranks, you will have grown two more wings. But for now, do not stand in the way."
The Liao ruler paid no heed to Wanyan's words, and after that, who dared say more? Now this Commander-in-Chief Wanyan Guang was the foremost general of the Liao kingdom. He was skilled in all eighteen weapons of war and thoroughly versed in military strategy and tactics. He was thirty-five or thirty-six years of age, with a dignified bearing and an imposing figure, standing over eight feet tall, with a fair face, red lips, yellow whiskers, and green eyes—a sight both majestic and fierce. On the battlefield he wielded a solid steel lance of tempered iron, and when the fighting grew thick, he would draw the iron rod at his waist and swing it with a ringing clang. Truly he was a warrior whose courage no ten thousand men could withstand.
But let us leave aside Commander Wanyan's remonstrance. Ouyang the Court Chamberlain received the Liao imperial edict, gathered the gifts and horses, mounted his ride, and made straight for Ji Prefecture. Song Jiang was in Ji Prefecture at the time, training and resting his troops. When he learned that an envoy had arrived from the Liao kingdom, uncertain whether the mission boded good or ill, he consulted the Oracle of the Sacred Lady and cast the lots. The result was an omen of the highest auspiciousness. He discussed this with Wu Yong. "An omen of the highest good," he said, "most likely means the Liao kingdom intends to offer us an amnesty and recruit us. What should we do?"
Wu Yong replied: "If that is so, we can turn their own stratagem against them and accept their offer. We can place Ji Prefecture under the command of Lu Junyi and then seize Ba Prefecture from them. If we gain Ba Prefecture as well, the fall of the Liao kingdom will be only a matter of time. We have already taken Tan Prefecture, which is like cutting off the Liao kingdom's left hand. This affair is not difficult. We need only make it appear hard at first and easy afterward, so that they do not grow suspicious."
Now then, Ouyang the Court Gentleman had arrived beneath the walls. Song Jiang gave orders to open the city gates and let him in. Ouyang the Court Gentleman entered the city, dismounted before the prefectural yamen, and proceeded to the main hall. After the customary greetings, host and guest took their seats. Song Jiang asked, "What is the purpose of Your Honor's visit?"
Ouyang the Court Gentleman said, "I have a small matter to report to your esteemed attention. I beg you to dismiss those around you." Song Jiang then ordered his attendants to withdraw and invited Ouyang into the rear chamber to speak in private. When they reached the rear chamber, Ouyang the Court Gentleman leaned forward and said to Song Jiang: "Our Great Liao Kingdom has long heard of your great name, General, but mountains and rivers lie between us, and we had no means of paying our respects in person. We also learned that at your Liangshan stronghold you act on Heaven's behalf, and that all your brothers labor with one heart and one mind. At present, treacherous ministers of the Song court have blocked the path of the worthy. Those who present gold and silk to their doors are given high office and entrusted with great responsibilities, while those who offer no bribes—even if they have rendered great service to the state—are left buried in obscurity, denied promotion and reward. Thus do these venal cliques manipulate power, flatterers and sycophants gain advancement by luck alone, the envious and jealous suppress the capable, and rewards and punishments are dispensed without clarity. The result is great disorder throughout the realm. In Jiangnan, Liangzhe, Shandong, and Hebei, bandits rise on every side; outlaws run rampant while good people are trampled and cannot sustain their lives. Now you command a hundred thousand elite troops, and your hearts are wholly loyal to the cause, yet you have been given only the post of Vanguard General, without promotion or rank. Your brothers toil and serve the state, yet all remain men of no official standing. You are then ordered to lead your forces straight into the desert, enduring such hardship, winning merit for the court—yet the court bestows no reward upon you. All of this is the scheming of treacherous ministers. If along your way you were to seize gold, pearls, and treasure and send them as gifts to win the favor of the four villainous ministers—Cai Jing, Tong Guan, Gao Qiu, and Yang Jian—you could be assured of rank and titles, and imperial favor would come at once. But if you refuse to act in this way, General, then even if you serve the state with the purest heart and win the greatest merit, when you return to the court you will be charged with crimes instead.
"I have been sent by the Lord of the Great Liao Kingdom, bearing an imperial edict, to appoint you Grand General Who Guards the State of Liao and Grand Marshal commanding all armed forces. We present one ingot of gold, one scale-weight of silk, one hundred and eight bolts of brocade, and one hundred and eight named steeds. We further request a roster of the names of your one hundred and eight chieftains, to be presented to the court so that each may be conferred an official rank. This is not an attempt to lure or deceive you. The Lord of the Kingdom, having long heard of your great virtue, has sent me here to invite you and your generals to unite your hearts and assist our state."
When Song Jiang heard this, he replied: "What Your Honor says is entirely true. But I, Song Jiang, am of humble origin, a minor official of Yuncheng, a fugitive from justice who has taken refuge at Liangshan Marsh to escape calamity. The Son of Heaven of Song issued three successive edicts pardoning my crimes and offering amnesty. Though my office is small and my rank low, I have yet to render any meritorious service in return for the court's grace in pardoning me. Now that the Lord of the Kingdom has bestowed such high rank upon me and given me such generous gifts, I dare not accept them. I must ask Your Honor to return for now. It is the height of the sweltering summer—let us allow the troops to rest. For the time being, we will borrow the King's two cities to garrison our forces and wait until the cooler days of autumn before we discuss the matter further."
Ouyang the Court Gentleman said: "If you will not spurn this offer, at least accept the gold, silk, steeds, and brocade from the King of Liao for now. I will return and speak with you again in due course—it is not too late."
Song Jiang said: "Your Honor does not understand. Among our one hundred and eight men, there are many eyes and ears. Should word leak out, it would bring disaster upon us first."
Ouyang the Court Gentleman said: "The authority over the troops rests entirely in your hands. Who would dare disobey?"
Song Jiang said: "Your Honor does not know the full situation. Among my brothers there are many who are blunt and fierce of temper. Let me set things in order and bring all hearts into alignment. Then I will give you a reply in due time—it will not be too late." A poem bears witness:
Heavy loads of gold and silk depart from Jizhou,
The fragrant wind turns back, and shame cannot be borne.
Should the King of Liao ask of our surrender,
The clouds are in the green hills, and the moon rests in the tower.
Song Jiang then ordered that a feast be prepared. He escorted Ouyang the Court Gentleman out of the city, saw him mount his horse, and sent him on his way.
Song Jiang then summoned his military advisor Wu Yong and said, "What do you make of what the Liao court gentleman said just now?"
Wu Yong listened, let out a long sigh, lowered his head, and said nothing, turning the matter over in his mind.
Song Jiang asked, "Why does my advisor sigh?"
Wu Yong replied: "I have been thinking—it is only that you, elder brother, hold loyalty and righteousness as your guiding principle, and I would not presume to say much. But I believe what Ouyang the Court Gentleman said just now is entirely reasonable. At present, the Son of Heaven of Song is most holy and most wise, yet he has been taken in by the four treacherous ministers Cai Jing, Tong Guan, Gao Qiu, and Yang Jian, who monopolize power, and the sovereign heeds their words. Even if we achieve great success in the future, we will certainly receive no reward. We have accepted amnesty three times, and you, elder brother, as our leader, have received only the empty title of Vanguard General. In my humble opinion, abandoning Song for Liao would be the superior course—but this would betray your heart of loyalty and righteousness."
When Song Jiang heard this, he said: "You are wrong, Advisor. The matter of joining the Liao Kingdom must never be raised again. Even if the Song court wrongs me, my loyalty will never wrong the Song court. In the long run, even if we receive no reward for our merit, our names will be preserved in the annals of history. But if we turn our backs on what is right and follow what is wrong, Heaven will not forgive us! We must serve the state with utter loyalty, and only stop when we die."
Wu Yong said: "If you hold loyalty and righteousness in your heart, then we can use this very scheme to seize Bazhou from them... But for now, with the height of summer upon us, let us pause and rest the troops for the time being."
Song Jiang and Wu Yong having settled their plans, they did not speak of the matter to the others. Together with the remaining generals, they garrisoned Jizhou and waited for the summer's heat to pass.
The next day, Song Jiang was chatting with Gongsun Sheng in the army headquarters. Song Jiang asked, "I have long heard that your master, the Real Man Luo, is a lofty scholar of this prosperous age. Previously, when we attacked Gaotong Prefecture and needed to break the evil arts of Gao Lian, I secretly sent Dai Zong and Li Kui to find you, saying, 'Your revered master, the Real Man Luo, has efficacious arts.' I would trouble you, brother, to lead me tomorrow before the dharma seat to burn incense and pay my respects, so as to cleanse myself of worldly vulgarity. I do not know your wishes in this matter?" Gongsun Sheng replied, "This poor monk also wished to return to see my old mother and visit my original master. But seeing that you, elder brother, have been encamping the troops for days without settling, I did not dare to raise the matter. Today I was just about to inform you, my benevolent elder brother, and I did not expect that you wished to go. Tomorrow morning, we shall go together to pay respects to my original master, and this poor monk will then visit my old mother."
The next day, Song Jiang temporarily entrusted the army to the chief military advisor. He prepared famous incense, pure fruits, gold, pearls, colored silks, and satins, and brought along the six chieftains Hua Rong, Dai Zong, Lü Fang, Guo Sheng, Yan Shun, and Ma Lin. Song Jiang and Gongsun Sheng, eight horsemen in all, led five thousand foot soldiers and took the road to Mount Erxian in Jiugong County. As Song Jiang and the others rode on horseback, they left Jizhou and came to the deep recesses of the mountain peaks. They saw green pines filling the paths, cool air wafting freely, the sweltering heat entirely absent—truly a fine, beautiful mountain. Gongsun Sheng said from horseback, "It is famously called Mount Huyubi." When Song Jiang looked at the mountain, he saw:
Surrounded on all sides, exquisite from every angle.
Layered morning colors reflecting the clear sky, the pattering sound of a zither flying from the waterfall.
In the stream, jade sifting and jadeite soaring; on the stone walls, indigo piled and emerald heaped.
At the White Cloud Cave entrance, purple wisteria hang high and green vines droop;
Before the Jade Peak, red cassia cling to the cliff and green tendrils sway.
Leading young gray apes presenting fruit, calling herds of elk carrying flowers.
A thousand peaks vie in beauty; deep in the night, white crane listen to immortal scriptures;
Ten thousand valleys contend in flowing; in the warm wind, secluded birds speak to each other.
The land is remote—red dust cannot fly here; the mountains are deep—how often have carriages and horses come?
At that time, Gongsun Sheng and Song Jiang went straight to the gate of the Purple Void Monastery. The men dismounted and straightened their clothes and caps. A soldier carried the trust incense and gifts and went straight to the Crane Pavilion inside the monastery. The Taoist monks in the monastery, upon seeing Gongsun Sheng, all came forward to bow, and together they came to see Song Jiang, bowing as well. Gongsun Sheng then asked, "Where is my master?" The monks said, "The master has recently been sitting in retreat in the back, and has rarely come to the monastery." Upon hearing this, Gongsun Sheng and Song Jiang went straight to the retreat in the back mountain. Turning past the monastery, the path was rugged, the steps winding. Before they had gone a mile, they saw thorns used as a hedge, outside which were all green pines and cypresses, and inside the hedge were all precious herbs and rare flowers. In the middle were three snow-white grottoes, where the Real Man Luo sat upright chanting sutras. The boy attendant, knowing guests had arrived, opened the door to receive them. Gongsun Sheng first entered the thatched hut before the Crane Pavilion, bowed to his original master, and then reported, "This disciple's old friend, Song Jiang of Shandong, has accepted amnesty. Now by imperial decree he has been appointed as vanguard commander, leading troops to break the Liao invaders. Having now arrived in Jizhou, he has come specially to pay respects to my master. He is here." The Real Man Luo, upon hearing this, ordered that he be invited in.
Having entered the thatched hermitage, the Real Person Luo came down from his steps to greet them. Song Jiang earnestly entreated the Real Person Luo to sit and receive his obeisance. The Real Person Luo said, "You, General, are a supreme commander of the state, while this poor priest is merely a rustic hermit from the mountains. How dare I presume to accept such honor?" Song Jiang insisted on deferring and wished to bow to him. Only then did the Real Person Luo consent to sit. Song Jiang first took incense and burned it in the censer, then paid his respects with eight bows, after which he called Hua Rong and the other six chieftains, and each of them paid their respects in turn. The Real Person Luo had them all invited to sit, and ordered his boy attendants to prepare tea and present fruits. When this was done, the Real Person Luo said, "The General corresponds to a star chieftain in heaven and aligns with the constellations without—together you carry out the Way on Heaven's behalf. Now you have submitted to the Song dynasty, and your pure fame shall endure for ten thousand generations without fading!" Song Jiang said, "I was merely a minor official in Yuncheng, who fled my crimes to the mountain. I am grateful to the valiant heroes from all quarters who came to me at the sound of the wind. Like calls to like, and those of the same spirit seek one another. Their kindness is as close as bone and flesh, their bond as vital as arms and legs. Now that Heaven has revealed its signs, I know that we correspond to the stars and constellations above and have gathered in one place. By imperial decree, I now lead a great army to campaign against the Liao kingdom. Passing directly through this immortal realm, I have been granted by the karma of former lives the fortune to gaze upon and pay homage to you. I earnestly hope that the Real Person will illuminate the path ahead for me—there could be no greater fortune."
The Real Person Luo said, "Since the General does not disdain me and humbles himself to inquire, I am honored. But this priest has long withdrawn from the worldly; my heart is like dead ashes. I have nothing to offer in loyal service, and I hope you will not hold me to account." Song Jiang bowed again and sought instruction. The Real Person Luo said, "Let the General sit a while—I shall prepare a vegetarian meal. The hour is already late. Please rest for this one night on this desolate mountain in this thatched dwelling, and return your horse at dawn. I wonder if this meets with your wishes?" Song Jiang said, "Song Jiang had hoped precisely that my teacher would instruct me and dispel my delusions. How could I bear to leave so soon?" He then ordered his attendants to bring forward gold, pearls, silks, and brocades as offerings to the Real Person Luo. The Real Person Luo said, "This poor priest dwells in the wilds like a rustic old man, lodging his form within the world. Even if I accepted these gold and pearls, they would be of no use to me. I have my own cloth robe to cover my body; I have never worn silken brocades. The General commands tens of thousands of troops, and the rewards and gifts distributed before the army are a vast daily expenditure. I beg you to take back what you have offered." Song Jiang bowed again and entreated him to accept. The Real Person Luo firmly refused, and instead presented a vegetarian meal. When the meal was finished, they drank tea. The Real Person Luo told Gongsun Sheng to return home to visit his mother and to come back the next morning, then to accompany the General back to the city. That night he kept Song Jiang in the hermitage to converse. Song Jiang laid bare his innermost thoughts and told the Real Person Luo everything in detail, hoping to receive guidance. The Real Person Luo said, "The General's single-minded heart of loyalty and righteousness is equal to that of Heaven and Earth; the spirits and gods will surely protect him. In the future, in life he will be enfeoffed as a marquis, and after death he will receive offerings in a temple—of this there can be no doubt. It is only that the General's fortune throughout his life will be thin, and he will not enjoy complete perfection." Song Jiang asked, "Master, does this mean that Song Jiang will not die a good death?" The Real Person Luo said, "Not so! The General will die in his proper bed and be buried in his proper grave. It is only that his fortune is thin—wherever he goes, he will face many tribulations, with more worry than joy. When he reaches the height of success, he must then step back; he must never cling too long to wealth and rank." Song Jiang said again, "Master, wealth and rank are not what Song Jiang desires. I only wish that my brothers might always remain together. Even if we lived in poverty and low station, my humble heart would be satisfied. I only seek that we all might live in peace and contentment." The Real Person Luo smiled and said, "When the great limit arrives, will it permit you to linger?" Song Jiang bowed again and begged the Real Person for a dharma verse. The Real Person Luo ordered a boy attendant to bring paper and brush, and he wrote an eight-line dharma verse, which he transmitted to Song Jiang. These eight lines read:
*Few are those loyal at heart, and rare those of righteous spirit.*
*When the campaign in You and Yan is complete, the bright moon shines in vain.*
*First meeting at winter's end, the wild geese scatter and fly.*
*From Wu's head to Chu's tail, official emoluments are shared in return.*
When Song Jiang had read it through, he did not understand its meaning. He bowed again and earnestly entreated, "I beg my teacher to open your golden mouth and explain, to guide this bewildered fool." The Real Person Luo said, "This is Heaven's secret, which cannot not be revealed. When the time comes, the General will know for himself. The night is deep and still—please rest for the night within the hermitage, and we shall meet again tomorrow. This priest has not yet returned from the dream he departed for in former years; he wishes now to go again to that dream. I hope the General will not take offense!" Song Jiang took the eight-line dharma verse, tucked it away on his person, took leave of the Real Person Luo, and went to rest within the hermitage. The other priests received him in the abbot's quarters, and he passed the night there.
The next morning at dawn, he came to pay his respects to the Real Person, and by then Gongsun Sheng had already arrived at the thatched hermitage. The Real Person Luo ordered a vegetarian breakfast prepared for them. When the morning meal was finished, the Real Person Luo said again to Song Jiang, "General, this priest has a word to say. This disciple of mine, Gongsun Sheng, originally left the world to become a priest in this poor priest's mountain, far removed from the dust of the world—this was fitting. However, it is because he is one of the company of stars from that assembly, and he could not but come. Now his worldly ties grow shorter each day, while his practice of the Way grows deeper. If I were to keep him here today to serve this poor priest, it would mean disregarding the brotherly bond of former days. Let him follow the General from this day forth to accomplish great deeds. When you return triumphant to the capital, at that time I would ask the General to release him and send him back. In this way, this poor priest will have someone to whom to transmit the Way, and his old mother will not stand gazing in vain by her gate. The General is a man of loyalty and righteousness—he will surely act with loyalty and righteousness. I wonder if the General in his gracious consideration will accept this poor priest's request?" Song Jiang said, "How dare a disciple not obey his master's command? Moreover, Mr. Gongsun Sheng is Song Jiang's brother—whether he stays or goes is his own choice. How would I dare to hinder him?" The Real Person Luo and Gongsun Sheng both pressed their palms together and bowed, saying, "We thank the General for his golden promise." Then all the company took their leave of the Real Person Luo. The Real Person Luo escorted Song Jiang and the others out of the hermitage to bid them farewell. The Real Person Luo said, "General, take good care of yourself, and may you soon establish your merit and be enfeoffed as a marquis." Song Jiang bowed in farewell and came out before the hermitage. All their riding horses had been fed within the hermitage, and the attendants had led them outside to wait. The priests escorted Song Jiang and the others out beyond the hermitage to bid them farewell. Song Jiang ordered the horses led to a flat place halfway up the mountain, where he mounted together with Gongsun Sheng and the others, and they set off back to Ji Prefecture.
Nothing happened along the way, and soon they reached the city and dismounted before the prefecture offices. Black Whirlwind Li Kui came up and said, "Brother, when you went to see Realist Luo, why didn't you take me along?" Dai Zong said, "Realist Luo said you tried to kill him and was quite upset with you." Li Kui said, "He got what he deserved, and that's all!" Everyone laughed.
Song Jiang entered the prefecture offices, and the others all went to the rear hall. Song Jiang took out the eight-line prophecy of Realist Luo and handed it to Wu Yong to examine, but he could not understand its meaning. The others looked it over repeatedly, but none of them could make it out. Gongsun Sheng said, "Elder brother, these are divine words of heavenly mystery—they must not be divulged. Put them away, and they will serve you for life. Stop trying to guess at them. The teacher's prophecy will become clear later." Song Jiang followed his advice and hid them inside the Heavenly Book.
From that point on, the troops were stationed in Ji Prefecture for over a month, with no military developments. After the mid-seventh month, Zhao, the枢密院 (Shumiyuan, the Bureau of Military Affairs) commissioner of Tan Prefecture arrived with a document, saying he had received an imperial decree from the court urging the army to go into battle. Song Jiang received the dispatch from the Bureau of Military Affairs and immediately discussed it with the strategist Wu Yong. They went ahead to Yutian County to join Lu Junyi and the others to drill the troops and prepare weapons. After the assignments were settled, they returned to Ji Prefecture, offered sacrifices to the army banners, and chose a day to set out. Then attendants reported: "An envoy from the Liao kingdom has arrived." Song Jiang went out to receive him—it was Vice Minister Ouyang—and invited him into the rear hall. After the greetings, Song Jiang asked, "What brings the Vice Minister here?" Vice Minister Ouyang said, "Please dismiss those around us." Song Jiang at once ordered the soldiers to leave. The Vice Minister then said: "Our great Liao sovereign deeply admires your virtue. If you would generously submit to us and assist the Great Liao, you would certainly be invested as a prince and enfeoffed as a marquis. We earnestly hope you will accomplish this great righteousness soon, so that our sovereign need no longer wait anxiously." Song Jiang replied: "There are no outsiders here, so I will speak with complete loyalty. You should know that when you came last time, all the troops understood your intentions. Half of them are unwilling to submit. If I were to go with you out of Youzhou to meet the lord, the deputy commander Lu Junyi would surely lead his troops in pursuit. If we fought beneath those city walls, it would destroy the brotherhood we have shared. For now, I will take some trusted men and find a city where we can take shelter. If he leads troops after us and learns where we are, then we can avoid him. If he refuses to listen, we can still fight him later. If he cannot find out where we are, his army will return to Dongjing, and other complications will surely arise. Then we can meet the lord, lead the Liao army, and fight him—it won't be too late!" When Vice Minister Ouyang heard these words from Song Jiang, he was overjoyed and replied: "Close to here, adjoining Bazhou, there are two strategic passes: one called Yijin Pass, flanked by steep mountains on both sides with only a single post road between them; the other is Wen'an County, with dangerous mountains on both sides—once you pass the checkpoint, you reach the county seat. These two places are the two great gates of Bazhou. If you do as you say, you can take shelter in Bazhou. The prefecture is guarded by Kangli Ding'an, the Liao sovereign's uncle. You could stay there with the uncle and observe how things develop from there." Song Jiang said: "If that is possible, I will send men home immediately by night to bring my father and cut off all ties. You can secretly send men to guide me there. Let it be as you say—we will make preparations tonight." Vice Minister Ouyang was greatly pleased. He took leave of Song Jiang and mounted his horse to depart. There is a poem as proof:
A patriot serving the Hu is a sorrowful thing—
Changshan cursing the bandits won eternal fame.
If Song Jiang would submit to the Liao,
How could he compare to being king on Liangshan?
On that very day, Song Jiang sent for Lu Junyi, Wu Yong, and Zhu Wu to come to Ji Prefecture, where together they devised a plan for the cunning capture of Bazhou. After this, he went to see Song Jiang, and once their deliberations were settled, Lu Junyi received his orders and departed. Wu Yong and Zhu Wu secretly instructed the various generals to act in such and such a manner. Song Jiang took with him fifteen chieftains in all: Lin Chong, Hua Rong, Zhu Tong, Liu Tang, Mu Hong, Kui, Fan Rui, Bao Xu, Xiang Chong, Li Gun, Lü Fang, Guo Sheng, Kong Ming, and Kong Liang, leading some ten thousand soldiers. The numbers had been assigned, and they only waited for Vice Minister Ouyang to arrive before setting out. They looked for him for two days, when at last Vice Minister Ouyang came galloping up. He said to Song Jiang, "Our lord knows that you, General, are truly a man of good heart. Now that you have submitted to us, what need you fear from Song soldiers? Our Great Liao has no shortage of good troops, good generals, and strong men and sturdy horses to aid you. Since you wish to fetch your official and are not yet at ease about it, you may stay in Bazhou for now and keep the Imperial Uncle company, while we send men to fetch him later." Song Jiang listened, then said to the Vice Minister, "The officers and men who are willing to go are already fully prepared. When can we set out?" Vice Minister Ouyang replied, "Tonight, then. Please give the order, General." Song Jiang at once issued his commands: all horses were to have their saddle bells removed, and the soldiers were to march with bits in their mouths, moving swiftly, and they set out that same night. Meanwhile, the envoy was entertained. At dusk, the west gate of the city was opened and they departed. Vice Minister Ouyang led some dozens of cavalry in front as guides. Song Jiang led a column of troops behind him. After they had marched some twenty *li* or so, Song Jiang suddenly cried out from horseback, "Woe is me!" He said, "I had arranged for Military Advisor Wu Yong to come with us and submit to Great Liao, but we came in such haste that we did not wait for him. Let the army advance slowly, and send a fast rider at once to fetch him." By this time it was already past the third watch, and ahead of them was the pass at Yijin. Vice Minister Ouyang shouted at the top of his voice, "Open the gate!" The officers guarding the pass at once opened the barrier, and the entire force of men and horses crossed through, continuing on to Bazhou. As dawn was breaking, Vice Minister Ouyang invited Song Jiang to enter the city and reported his arrival to Imperial Uncle Kangli Ding'an. This Imperial Uncle was the Empress's own brother, the Great Liao lord's brother-in-law. He was the most powerful man in the realm, and moreover, his courage and daring surpassed all others. He commanded two vice ministers in the defense of Bazhou: one called Vice Minister Jin Fu, and the other Vice Minister Ye Qing. When they reported that Song Jiang had come to surrender, he ordered the troops to make camp outside the city walls, and had only the leader, Vanguard Commander Song Jiang, invited inside. Vice Minister Ouyang then entered the city with Song Jiang to have audience with Imperial Uncle Ding'an. The Imperial Uncle observed Song Jiang and saw at once that he was no ordinary man, so he descended the steps to greet him. He was invited to the rear hall, where the formal courtesies were exchanged, and then he was asked to take the seat of honor. Song Jiang replied, "Your Excellency is of royal blood, while this humble general is but a man who has surrendered. How could I presume upon Your Excellency's extraordinary courtesy and generous treatment? How could I ever repay you?" Imperial Uncle Ding'an said, "We have long heard that your fame fills the world and that your might has held the Central Plains in awe; your renown has reached even Great Liao. Our lord admires you deeply." Song Jiang said, "This humble general has enjoyed Your Excellency's grace. Song Jiang shall devote himself utterly to repaying the great kindness of our lord." Imperial Uncle Ding'an was greatly pleased and at once ordered a celebratory banquet to be arranged. At the same time he commanded that cattle be slaughtered and horses butchered to reward the three armies. A residence was selected in the city where Song Jiang, Hua Rong, and the others could rest, and only then were all the troops ordered into the city to be quartered. Hua Rong and the other generals all came to pay their respects to the Imperial Uncle and his men. After the foreign generals had settled in to rest alongside Song Jiang, Song Jiang asked Vice Minister Ouyang to send a message: "Would you trouble the Vice Minister to dispatch a man to inform the soldiers guarding the passes? When Military Advisor Wu Yong arrives, instruct them to let him through the pass so that he may join me here and we can rest together. Last night we came in such haste that we did not wait for him. In my rush, I came ahead with you and forgot all about him. In military affairs, we cannot do without him. Moreover, the Military Advisor is accomplished in both civil and martial arts, his wisdom and strategy are both of the highest order, and there is nothing in the Six Secret Teachings and the Three Strategies that he does not know." Vice Minister Ouyang listened, then immediately passed the word and sent men to inform the officers guarding Yijin Pass and Wen'an County: "When a man of scholar's appearance arrives, surnamed Wu and named Yong, let him through at once."
Now let me tell of Wen'an County, which, having received Vice Minister Ouyang's instructions, sent men out to relay the message to Yijin Pass, reporting all the details. When the defenders on the pass looked out, they saw dust blocking the sun and dirt fog covering the sky—an army bearing down on the pass. The garrison officers prepared rolling logs and catapult stones, readying for battle. But they saw a single horseman riding before the mountain, a man sitting in the saddle who looked like a scholar. Behind him were a wandering monk and a pilgrim, followed by several dozen commoners, all rushing up to the pass. The horseman reached the pass and shouted loudly: "I am Wu Yong, the military advisor under Song Jiang's command. I was coming to find my elder brother, but the Song troops are hot on my heels. Open the pass and save me!" The garrison officer said: "This must be the very man." He immediately opened the gate and let Scholar Wu inside. The two figures resembling a wandering monk and a pilgrim also pressed their way through the gate. The guards tried to stop them, but the pilgrim had already crashed through the gate. The monk said: "We two are monks fleeing from the army. Save us, we beg you!" The garrison soldiers insisted on pushing them back out. The monk flew into a rage, the pilgrim grew frantic, and they shouted: "We are not monks—we are the killing devils Lu Zhishen and Wu Song!" The flowery monk swung his iron staff and struck at their heads. The pilgrim Wu drew his twin sabers and began cutting down men as easily as slicing melons and vegetables. The several dozen commoners—Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, Li Li, Li Yun, Yang Lin, Shi Yong, Shi Qiao, Duan Zhu, Bai Sheng, and Yu Baosi—had already rushed into the pass and together seized control of it. Lu Junyi led his soldiers up to the pass, and they all swept into Wen'an County. How could the garrison officials withstand them? The whole band gathered at Wen'an County.
Now let me tell of Wu Yong, who galloped to the walls of Bazhou. The Khitan guards at the gate reported his arrival inside the city. Song Jiang met Vice Minister Ouyang at the city's edge and had him present Wu Yong to the Imperial Uncle Kangli Ding'an. Wu Yong said: "Wu Yong came later than I should have. I was just leaving the city when Lu Junyi became aware of my plan and pursued me all the way to the pass. I have now entered the city, but I do not know what has become of things since." Then a swift scout rode in with a report: "The Song army has seized Wen'an County and its troops are advancing on Bazhou." The Imperial Uncle Ding'an ordered troops to march out and meet the enemy. Song Jiang said: "Do not deploy forces yet. Wait until they reach the city walls. I will use kind words to persuade them. If they refuse, then we will fight—it will not be too late." Then another scout rode in: "The Song army is not far from the city." The Imperial Uncle Ding'an and Song Jiang went up to the wall to look. They saw the Song troops drawn up in neat ranks before the city. Lu Junyi, in full armor, sat astride his horse with a spear across his lap, marshaling his officers and men, displaying his martial prowess. He stood beneath the banner at the gate and shouted loudly: "Bring out the traitor Song Jiang, who has rebelled against the court!" Song Jiang stood on the parapet of the city tower and pointed at Lu Junyi: "Brother, the Song court rewards and punishes without justice, wicked ministers control the government, and flatterers hold all the power. I have already submitted to the Liao sovereign. Join me in heart and help me—together we shall support the Liao lord, so as not to betray the bond we forged at Liangshan." Lu Junyi cursed him loudly: "I was living peacefully in the north capital when you lured me up to the mountain. The Son of Heaven of the Song issued three edicts of amnesty to us. How has the Song court wronged you? How dare you betray the court? You shortsighted, worthless man—come out and face me, and let us settle victory and defeat!" Song Jiang flew into a rage and ordered the city gates opened. He sent Lin Chong, Hua Rong, Zhu Tong, and Mu Hong—four generals—out together to capture this wretch alive. Lu Junyi, seeing the four generals, held back his soldiers, spurred his horse forward with spear leveled, and charged straight at them without the slightest fear. The four generals fought him for over twenty rounds, then wheeled their horses and fled toward the city. Lu Junyi beckoned with his spear, and the great army behind him charged forward in pursuit. Lin Chong and Hua Rong held the drawbridge, turned and fought again, feigning defeat and retreat to lure Lu Junyi into the city. The three armies behind raised a great shout. Song Jiang and all the generals inside the city rose up together in revolt, meeting them as they entered. Fighting erupted on all sides. Every man laid down his arms; every heart turned to their cause. The Imperial Uncle Ding'an stood with eyes wide and mouth agape, at a loss, and he and the other vice ministers were taken captive without resistance.
Song Jiang led his army into the city. All the generals gathered at the prefectural office to pay their respects. Song Jiang gave orders to bring in the Imperial Uncle Ding'an, Vice Minister Ouyang, Vice Minister Jin Fu, and Vice Minister Ye Qing, and had them seated separately, treating them with courtesy. Song Jiang said: "You of the Liao do not understand the true situation and have misjudged us. These heroes of mine are not mere bandits gathered in the mountains. Each one is a minister of star-born rank—how could they betray their sovereign and submit to Liao? We only wanted to take Bazhou, and seized this opportunity to do so. Now that we have succeeded, Imperial Uncle and the others, please return to your own country. Do not be troubled—we have no intention to harm you. As for your subordinates and all your families, they shall all be sent back to your country. The city of Bazhou now belongs to the Celestial Court. You must not come to contest it. Wherever our armies march in future, there will be no further tolerance." After Song Jiang had issued his orders, all the Khitan officials in the city were sent away to accompany the Imperial Uncle Ding'an back to Youzhou. Song Jiang posted proclamations to reassure the people and ordered the deputy vanguard Lu Junyi to take half the army back to garrison Ji Prefecture. Song Jiang and the other half of his generals would hold Bazhou. He sent men with a military dispatch to fly report to Zhao the Imperial Commissioner that Bazhou had been taken. Zhao Anfu was greatly delighted. At the same time, he drafted a memorial to present to the court.
Now let us return to the tale. The State An Guorong, together with the three vice ministers, led the troops back to Yanjing and went before the Khan to report in detail the matter of Song Jiang's feigned surrender. Because of this, they said, those rascals had seized Bazhou. When the Liao Khan heard this, he flew into a rage and shouted at Vice Minister Ouyang, "It is all because of you, you servile flattering wretch, going back and forth stirring up trouble! You have cost us Bazhou, a vital city. How are we to defend Yanjing now? Seize him and behead him at once!" From among the assembled officials stepped out Commander Yuyan and memorialized, "Let not Your Majesty trouble himself. Why should the Lord of the realm bother with such wretches? This slave has a plan of his own. I ask that Vice Minister Ouyang be spared execution. If Song Jiang were to learn of it, he would only laugh at us." The Liao Khan granted the petition and pardoned Vice Minister Ouyang. Commander Yuyan then memorialized, "This slave will summon the twenty-eight generals of the Mansions and the eleven great generals of the Luminaries under my command to deploy a battle formation and sweep away all these rascals in a single stroke..." Before he could finish speaking, Commander He stepped forth from the ranks and memorialized, "Let not Your Majesty worry. This slave has a stratagem of his own. As the saying goes, 'Why use an ox cleaver to kill a chicken?' There is no need for the Commander in Chief to go in person. This Commander He need only employ a small scheme to bring about the destruction of this band of rascals, leaving them without a place to be buried!" When the Khan heard this, he was overjoyed and said, "My beloved minister, I should be glad to hear your wondrous plan."
Commander He opened his mouth and wagged his tongue, setting forth his cunning scheme. And it came to pass that Lu Junyi arrived at a place where the horses had no fodder and the men had no food. It caused the valiant warriors of three armies to lose their courage and a hero of his generation to knit his brows. What exactly was the scheme Commander He proposed? Listen to the explanation in the next chapter.
