Chapter 87
The Great Way is profound and deep—how can its tidings be told? To speak it aloud would startle both ghosts and gods. It embraces the universe within, cleaves the primal light, and holds a true joy unmatched in all the world. Before the Vulture Peak, the precious pearl is brought forth, shining bright with five kinds of radiance. It illuminates all living beings above and below the heavens; those who understand it shall live as long as the mountains and seas.
Now tell of the Master of the Tripitaka and his four disciples, who had taken leave of the woodcutter and descended the Hidden Mist Mountain, pressing on along the main road. After traveling several days, they suddenly saw a city drawing near. Tripitaka said, "Wukong, look at that city ahead—could it be the Kingdom of Tianzhu?" The Pilgrim shook his hands and said, "No, no. Though the Tathagatha's abode is called the Land of Ultimate Bliss, it has no city walls. It is a great mountain, with towers, terraces, halls, and pavilions within—called the Great Thunderclap Temple of the Spirit Mountain. Even if we have reached the Kingdom of Tianzhu, that is not where the Tathagatha dwells. Who knows how many leagues the Kingdom of Tianzhu still lies from Spirit Mountain? That city must be an outer prefecture; we shall know clearly only when we reach the frontier."
Before long they arrived outside the city. Tripitaka dismounted and entered through the three gates, only to find the people's affairs desolate and the streets and avenues cold and forsaken. When they came to the marketplace, they saw many men in blue robes ranged to the left and right, and several in caps and sashes standing beneath the eaves of the houses. As the four of them walked along the street, these people made no way for them at all. Zhu Bajie, rustic and dull, thrust his long snout forward and called out, "Make way! Make way!" Those men looked up sharply, and upon seeing his appearance, every one of them went weak in bones and limp in sinews, stumbling and staggering, all crying out, "A demon has come! A demon has come!" The officials beneath the eaves were so frightened that they trembled and bowed, asking, "Where do you come from?" Fearing they might cause trouble, Tripitaka stepped forward and addressed the crowd: "This poor monk is sent by the throne of the Great Tang in the East to seek scriptures from the Buddha at the Great Thunderclap Temple in the Kingdom of Tianzhu. Passing through your honorable land, I neither know the name of this place nor have I yet found lodging. Having entered the city, I failed to show proper deference—I beg your pardon." The official then bowed and said, "This is an outer prefecture of Tianzhu, called Fengxian Prefecture. For years on end we have suffered drought. The Marquis has sent us here to post a proclamation, seeking a master of the Dharma who can pray for rain and save the people." The Pilgrim said upon hearing this, "Where is your proclamation?" The officials replied, "The proclamation is here. We had just swept the corridor eaves and had not yet posted it." The Pilgrim said, "Bring it and let me see." The officials at once unrolled the proclamation and hung it beneath the eaves. The Pilgrim and his fellow disciples stepped forward to read it together. The proclamation read:
The Marquis Shangguan of Fengxian Prefecture, Great Kingdom of Tianzhu, posts this proclamation to engage a wise master and seek the Great Dharma: Because this prefecture's territory is vast and its people and soldiers prosperous, yet for successive years we have suffered unrelenting drought and repeated seasons of desolation—the people's fields are blighted and the military lands are barren; rivers run shallow and ditches and channels stand dry. Wells hold no water; springs yield no flow. The wealthy can barely sustain life; the poor can hardly survive. A peck of grain costs a hundred pieces of gold; a bundle of firewood is worth five taels of silver. A girl of ten is bartered for three pecks of rice; a boy of five is taken away by whoever will have him. In the city, men fear the law and pawn their clothes and goods to stay alive; in the countryside, men defy authority and rob and even eat others to preserve their lives. For this reason we issue this proclamation, looking up to the worthy and wise of all directions, to pray for rain and save the people. The gratitude shall be richly repaid—we pledge a thousand pieces of gold as reward, and we shall not speak falsely. Such is the proclamation required.
After reading it, the Pilgrim said to the officials, "What does 'Marquis Shangguan' mean?" The officials replied, "Shangguan is his surname—the surname of our Marquis." The Pilgrim laughed and said, "That is a rare surname." Bajie said, "Elder Brother never studied. The *Hundred Surnames* has a line: 'Shangguan, Ouyang.'" Tripitaka said, "Disciples, hold your idle chatter. Which of you can pray for rain? If one of you can pray for a sweet rain to relieve the people's suffering, this would be a deed of ten thousand virtues. If not, then let us be on our way—do not delay our journey." The Pilgrim said, "What difficulty is there in praying for rain? I, Old Sun, can churn the rivers and stir the seas, shift the Dipper and move the stars, kick at the sky and burrow into the earth, breathe mist and spew clouds, carry mountains and chase the moon, call for rain and summon the wind—were not all these the games of my youth? Why should it be anything remarkable?"
The officials, hearing this, dispatched two men in haste to report to the prefectural office: "My lord, boundless good fortune has arrived!" The Marquis was at that moment burning incense in silent prayer. Hearing that good fortune had come, he asked, "What good fortune?" The official said, "Today we received the proclamation and had just posted it at the marketplace when four monks appeared, claiming to be sent from the Great Tang in the East to seek Buddhist scriptures at the Great Thunderclap Temple in the Kingdom of Tianzhu. Seeing the proclamation, they said at once that they could pray for sweet rain, and have come to report it."
The Marquis at once adjusted his robes and went on foot, without sedan chair or retinue, straight to the marketplace, where he earnestly invited them with full ceremony. Someone suddenly announced, "The Marquis has come!" The people stepped aside. The Marquis, seeing Tripitaka, paid no heed to the hideous appearance of his disciples, but fell to his knees in the middle of the street and bowed, saying: "I am Shangguan, Marquis of Fengxian Prefecture. Having purified myself, I humbly beg the master to pray for rain and save the people. I pray you, Master, in your great mercy, exercise your divine power—deliver us, deliver us!" Tripitaka returned the bow and said, "This is no place for discussion. Let this poor monk proceed to a temple or monastery, where the matter can be properly handled." The Marquis said, "Let the Master come to my humble yamun—there is a clean place there."
The master and disciples accordingly led their horse and shouldered their loads, going straight to the prefectural residence, where they were received one by one. The Marquis ordered tea and a vegetarian meal to be served. In a short while the meal arrived. Bajie ate with the abandon of a starving tiger. The serving attendants were so frightened that their hearts trembled and their gall bladders shook; back and forth they went, adding soup and adding rice, like figures on a revolving lantern—scarcely had the dishes been set out before he ate his fill and only then stopped. When the meal was finished, Tripitaka thanked the Marquis and asked, "Your Excellency, how long has your region suffered this drought?" The Marquis replied:
"Our land is the great kingdom of Tianzhu;
Fengxian, its outer prefecture, is where I hold sway.
For three straight years we have met with desolation—
No grass has grown, the five grains have ceased entirely.
Great and small households find trade and barter hard;
Nine out of ten gates know only weeping and wailing.
Of every ten, two parts have starved to death,
And the remaining part flickers like a candle in the wind.
I, your minister, have posted proclamations seeking the worthy everywhere,
And have now the fortune to meet true monks who have come to our land.
If but an inch of rain be granted to relieve the people,
I pledge a thousand pieces of gold to repay your great kindness!"
When the Monkey King heard this, his face brimming with joy, he laughed and said, "Say no more, say no more. If you speak of a thousand pieces of gold as reward, not a single drop of sweet rain will you receive; but if we speak of accumulating merit and virtue, this old Sun will send you a great rain." The Prefect, a man of upright governance and virtue who loved his people deeply, at once invited the Monkey King to sit in the highest seat and bowed low before him, saying, "If the Master indeed shows mercy, this humble official shall not dare to prove ungrateful." The Monkey King said, "Speak no more of this. Rise. I ask only that you look well after my master while I take action." Sha Wujing said, "Brother, how shall you proceed?" The Monkey King said, "Come here, you and Bajie. Stand with me here below this hall as my wings and helpers, while I summon the Dragon King to send rain." Bajie and Sha Wujing obeyed his orders, and all three stood in the hall below. The Prefect burned incense and bowed in reverence. Tang Sanzang sat and recited sutras.
The Monkey King recited the true words and chanted the magic spells, and at once a dark cloud appeared from the east and gradually descended before the hall. It was the Old Dragon King of the East Sea, Ao Guang. Ao Guang withdrew his cloud feet, transformed into human form, stepped forward, and bowed to the Monkey King, saying, "The Great Sage has summoned this little dragon—for what purpose am I needed?" The Monkey King said, "Rise. I have troubled you to come from afar, but there is nothing else. This is Fengxian Prefecture, where drought has persisted for years past. I ask you—why have you not come to send rain?" The Old Dragon King said, "May it please the Great Sage to know: though I am able to send rain, I am one who acts only by Heaven's command. If Heaven does not send me, how would I dare to come and send rain on my own?" The Monkey King said, "I passed through this place and saw the people suffering from long drought. I have specially summoned you here to bestow rain and bring relief—how can you make excuses?" The Dragon King said, "How would I dare make excuses? But when the Great Sage recited the true words and called me, I dared not fail to come. First, I have not received an imperial decree from on high; second, I have not brought the divine generals who execute the rain. How could I set the rain ministry in motion? Since the Great Sage has a heart to save the people, permit this little dragon to return to the sea to muster troops, and may the Great Sage go to the Celestial Palace to petition for approval and obtain an imperial decree for rain, and have the Water Official release the dragon—then I shall send rain according to the number prescribed in the decree."
The Monkey King saw that he spoke with reason and had no choice but to send the Old Dragon King back to the sea. He then leaped out from his astral position and told Tang Sanzang all about the Dragon King's words. Tang Sanzang said, "Since this is so, go and attend to it—but on no account speak falsely." The Monkey King then instructed Bajie and Sha Wujing: "Protect our master. I am going up to the Celestial Palace." And so the Great Sage said "I'm gone," and vanished without a trace. The Prefect trembled with fear and said, "Where has Lord Sun gone?" Bajie laughed and said, "He's riding his cloud up to Heaven." The Prefect was extremely respectful and sent out orders throughout the city, in every street and lane, commanding that all—nobles, scholars, commoners, soldiers, and civilians alike—set up spirit tablets of the Dragon King in every home, place a water urn by every door with a willow branch in it, and offer incense and worship Heaven.
Now the Monkey King rode his somersault cloud straight to the West Heavenly Gate, where he found the Guardian Heavenly King leading celestial soldiers and warriors forward to greet him, saying, "Great Sage, is the scripture pilgrimage complete?" The Monkey King said, "Not far from it. I have now reached the borders of the Kingdom of Tianzhu. There is an outer prefecture called Fengxian Prefecture, where it has not rained for three years and the people suffer greatly. I wish to pray for rain and save them. I summoned the Dragon King there, but he said he had no decree and dared not act on his own. I have come specially to have an audience with the Jade Emperor to request a decree." The Heavenly King says: "Perhaps it is not Heaven's will to rain there. I heard some time ago: that Prefect was disrespectful and offended Heaven and Earth. The Supreme Ruler, in his wrath, set up a mountain of rice, a mountain of flour, and a great golden lock. Rain is not to fall until these three things are destroyed." The Monkey King did not understand what this meant and wished to see the Jade Emperor. The Heavenly King dared not obstruct him and let him pass through. He went straight to the outer court of the Hall of Universal Illumination, where the Four Heavenly Masters came forward to greet him, saying, "What brings the Great Sage here?" The Monkey King said: "While protecting Tang Sanzang, I reached the borders of the Kingdom of Tianzhu. Fengxian Prefecture has no rain, and the Prefect summoned my master to pray for it. I called the Dragon King and intended to order him to send rain, but he said he had not received the Jade Emperor's decree and dared not act without permission. I have come specially to request a decree, to relieve the people's suffering." The Four Heavenly Masters said: "Rain is not meant to fall in that place." The Monkey King said with a smile: "Whether it should or should not, I ask you to present my request—let us see how my influence weighs." Ge Xianweng said: "As the saying goes: 'A fly wrapping itself in a web—what a thick face!'" Xu Jingyang said: "Stop this nonsense. Just take him in."
Qiu Hongji, Zhang Daoling, and the two other true men, Ge and Xu, led him before the Hall of Exalted Clouds and memorialized: "Your Majesty, Sun Wu Kong has reached Fengxian Prefecture in the Kingdom of Tianzhu and wishes to request rain. He has come specially to ask for a decree." The Jade Emperor said: "On the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month, three years ago, I went forth to observe the myriad heavens and roam the three realms. When I arrived at that place, I saw that the officials there were unkind. They overthrew the pure offerings meant for Heaven and fed them to dogs, and they spoke foul words, committing the offense of insolence. I then established three matters in the Hall of Scented Curtains. Take Sun Wu Kong to see them. If these three matters are destroyed, then I shall issue a decree to him. If they are not destroyed, let him mind his own business."
The Four Heavenly Masters led the Monkey King into the Hall of Scented Curtains to look. There he saw a mountain of rice about ten zhang high, and a mountain of flour about twenty zhang high. Beside the rice mountain was a chicken the size of a fist, pecking at the rice—now a quick peck, now a slow one—and eating it. Beside the flour mountain was a golden-haired little dog, licking at the flour—now a long lick, now a short one—and eating it. On the left stood an iron frame, on which hung a golden lock about one chi and three or four cun long, with a lock bolt as thick as a finger. Below it was a bright lamp, its flame licking at the lock bolt. The Monkey King did not understand the meaning of this and turned to ask the Heavenly Masters: "What does this signify?" The Heavenly Masters said: "That one offended Heaven. The Jade Emperor established these three matters. Rain is not to fall until the chicken has pecked all the rice away, the dog has licked all the flour away, and the lamp's flame has burned through the lock bolt."
When Wukong heard these words, he turned deathly pale with shock and dared not make another petition. He walked out of the hall, his face burning with shame. The Four Celestial Masters laughed and said, "Great Sage, do not be troubled. This matter can only be resolved by doing good. If a single thought of goodness and compassion is stirred, it will move Heaven, and the mountain of rice and the mountain of flour will immediately collapse, and the golden chain will instantly snap. Go and persuade him to return to the path of virtue, and blessings will come of themselves."
Wukong followed their advice. He did not go to the Hall of Divine Mists to take leave of the Jade Emperor but went straight down to the mortal world and returned to the common realm. In a short while, he arrived at the Western Heaven Gate and met the Guardian Heavenly King again. The Heavenly King asked, "How did the petition fare?"
Wukong told him all about the mountain of rice, the mountain of flour, and the golden lock, saying, "It was exactly as you said—he refused to issue the edict. Just now the Four Celestial Master escorted me out and instructed me to persuade that fellow to return to goodness, and then the source of blessing would be restored." With that, he parted from the Heavenly King and descended on his cloud to the mortal realm.
The Prefect, along with Tripitaka, Bajie, Sha Wujing, and the officials great and small, came forward, crowding around to ask questions. Wukong gave the Prefect a stern shout and said, "It is because on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month, three years ago, you offended Heaven and Earth, causing hardship to the common people, and now they refuse to send rain." The Prefect was so frightened that he fell to his knees and prostrated himself on the ground. "Master, how could you know about what happened three years ago?"
Wukong said, "You pushed over the vegetarian offerings meant for Heaven and fed them to the dogs. Tell me the truth."
The Prefect dared not conceal anything. "Three years ago, on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month, I was offering sacrifices to Heaven in my yamen. My wife was unworthy, and we quarreled with harsh words. In a moment of ignorant rage, I knocked over the offering table and spilled the vegetarian feast. I did indeed call the dogs to eat it. These past two years I have dwelt on it in my mind, my spirit troubled and distracted, and I had no way to make amends. I did not know that Heaven above had recorded my offense and brought harm upon the common people. Now that you, Master, have descended here, I beg you to make it clear—how does the Upper Realm reckon this matter?"
Wukong said, "That very day was when the Jade Emperor descended to the mortal realm. He saw you feeding the sacrificial offerings to dogs and uttering foul words. The Jade Emperor then established three things to mark your offense."
Bajie asked, "What are these three things?"
Wukong said, "In the Hall of Fragrant Offerings, there is a mountain of rice about ten zhang high, and a mountain of flour about twenty zhang high. Beside the rice mountain is a tiny chicken, no bigger than a fist, pecking at the rice—now slowly, now quickly. Beside the mountain of flour is a golden-haired little licking dog, lapping at the flour—now with a long tongue, now with a short one. To the left there is also an iron frame, on which hangs a great golden lock, the bolt of which is about as thick as a finger. Below it is a bright lamp, and the flame licks at the lock bolt. Only when the chicken has pecked all the rice away, the dog has licked all the flour away, and the flame has burned through the lock bolt will they then be due to send rain here."
Bajie laughed and said, "No matter, no matter! If Brother is willing to take me, I'll transform my body and in one go eat up all his rice and flour and snap the lock bolt. We'll surely get rain."
Wukong said, "Don't talk nonsense, idiot. This is a scheme devised by Heaven above—how could you even see it?"
Tripitaka said, "If it is as you say, what can be done?"
Wukong said, "It is not difficult, not difficult. When I was leaving, the Four Celestial Masters told me that it can be resolved simply by doing good."
The Prefect prostrated himself on the ground and pleaded piteously, "I will follow whatever the Master instructs. I, your subordinate, will submit to it entirely."
Wukong said, "If you turn your heart to goodness, then without delay chant Buddha's name and read the scriptures, and I will act on your behalf. But if you persist as before, I cannot resolve this either, and soon Heaven will punish you, and your life will not be spared."
The Prefect kowtowed and bowed, vowing to submit to the faith. At once he summoned the local monks and Taoist priests and established a ritual ground. Documents were drawn up and submitted to the Three Heavens. The Prefect led the people in holding incense and bowing in reverence, thanking Heaven and Earth and confessing his faults. Tripitaka also recited scriptures for him. At the same time, notices were sent out, instructing everyone in the city and outside it, great households and small, men and women alike, to burn incense and chant Buddha's name. From that moment on, the sound of goodness filled the ear.
Only then was Wukong pleased. He said to Bajie and Sha Wujing, "You two take good care of the Master. Let old Sun go there once more."
Bajie said, "Where are you going again, Brother?"
Wukong said, "This Prefect has heeded old Sun's words and truly accepted instruction. He reveres goodness and compassion and chants Buddha's name with a sincere heart. I am going now to petition the Jade Emperor once more and beg for some rain."
Sha Wujing said, "Since you must go, Brother, do not delay—and do not keep us waiting on our journey. You must secure a full measure of rain, so that we may fulfill our proper merit."
The Great Sage once more mounted his cloud and went straight to the Heaven's Gate. There he met the Guardian Heavenly King again. The Heavenly King said, "Why have you come again?"
Wukong said, "That Prefect has already returned to goodness."
The Heavenly King was also pleased. Just as they were speaking, the Messenger of Direct Orders was seen approaching, holding Taoist documents and Buddhist petitions, arriving at the Heaven's Gate to deliver them. When the Messenger saw Wukong, he bowed and said, "This is the fruit of the Great Sage's persuasion toward goodness."
Wukong said, "Where are you taking these documents?"
The Messenger said, "Straight to the Hall of Penetrating Light, to be passed by the Celestial Masters to the Great Jade Emperor himself."
Wukong said, "In that case, go ahead, and I will follow shortly after."
The Messenger entered the Heaven's Gate. The Guardian Heavenly King said, "Great Sage, there is no need to see the Jade Emperor. Just go down to the Mansion of the Nine Heavens' Response to the Origin and borrow some Thunder Gods, and directly send forth thunder and lightning—then they will have their rain."
True to his word, Wukong entered the Heavenly Gate. He did not ascend to the Hall of the Divine Mind to seek an imperial decree, but instead turned his cloud steps and went straight to the Palace of the Nine Heavens Responding to Primordiality. There, the Thunder Gate Messengers, the Recording Officers, and the Investigating Officers all came forward to greet him, bowing and saying, "What brings the Great Sage here?" Wukong said, "I have business to see the Celestial Worthy." The three messengers immediately conveyed the request. The Celestial Worthy then descended from his nine-phoenix vermilion canopy, straightened his robes, and came out to welcome him. After the formal greetings were exchanged, Wukong said, "I have come to make a special request." The Celestial Worthy said, "What is it?" Wukong said, "I have been escorting Tripitaka to Fengxian Prefecture, where I have seen the terrible drought. I promised them I would pray for rain, and I have come to ask you to lend me your officers and generals from the Thunder Department to produce thunder there." The Celestial Worthy said, "I know that the Prefect of that prefecture offended Heaven. Three conditions were set up. I do not know whether it is yet time for rain to fall." Wukong smiled and said, "Yesterday I went to see the Jade Emperor to request a decree. The Jade Emperor had the Celestial Master take me to the Hall of Incense to observe the three conditions—they were a mountain of rice, a mountain of flour, and a golden lock. Only when all three are overturned will rain be due. I was worried it would be difficult to overturn them, so the Celestial Master advised me to persuade the Prefect and his people to do good, saying that when people have good thoughts, Heaven will surely heed them. In this way, perhaps the heart of Heaven could be moved and the disaster resolved. Now good thoughts have suddenly arisen, and the sound of goodness fills the ears. Just now the Messenger of Direct Talismans has already submitted to the Jade Emperor the document reporting their reform and turn to goodness. I have come to your honorable residence to ask for the assistance of officers from the Thunder Department." The Celestial Worthy said, "In that case, I will send Deng, Xin, Zhang, and Tao, along with the Lightning Maiden, to follow the Great Sage down to Fengxian Prefecture to produce thunder."
The four generals, together with the Great Sage, arrived at the realm of Fengxian in no time. There they began to perform their magic in midair. One could hear the roaring rumble of thunder and see the flashing of lightning. Truly:
Lightning lashed like golden-purple vipers,
Thunder crashed, startling the hibernating multitudes.
Dazzling flames of light flew,
Thunderbolts split the mountain caves.
Heaven was bright with the flash of bolts,
The earth trembled from the rolling shocks.
A single flash of red sparked new growth,
And ten thousand miles of rivers and mountains were shaken.
Inside and outside the city of Fengxian Prefecture, all the officials great and small, soldiers and commoners alike, had not heard thunder or lightning for three full years. Today, when they heard the sound of thunder and saw the flash of lightning, they all knelt down together, holding incense burners above their heads, some clutching willow branches, all chanting: "Homage to Amitabha Buddha! Homage to Amitabha Buddha!" This single thought of goodness truly startled Heaven above. As the ancient poem says:
When a human heart gives rise to a single thought,
Heaven and Earth both know of it.
If good and evil go unrewarded,
then Heaven and Earth must be unjust.
Putting aside the tale of Great Sage Sun directing the thunder generals to flash and rumble over Fengxian Prefecture, where everyone turned to goodness—let us tell instead of how the Messenger of Direct Talismans from above delivered the documents from both the monks and the Daoists to the Hall of Universal Light, where the four Celestial Masters transmitted them to the Hall of the Divine Mind. When the Jade Emperor saw them, he said, "Since those creatures have given rise to good thoughts, let us see how the three conditions fare." Even as he spoke, an officer who guarded the Hall of Incense reported, "The mountains of rice and flour have both collapsed—in an instant the rice and flour are gone, and the golden lock is broken." Before he had finished reporting, another Heavenly Official in attendance led the local deity, the City God, and the Soil Gods of Fengxian Prefecture forward to pay homage and report: "The Prefect of this prefecture and all the common people, great and small, in the entire city—there is not a single household or person who has not embraced good karma, reverenced the Buddha, and honored Heaven. We now entreat you to extend your compassion and send down sweet rain to save the people." The Jade Emperor was greatly pleased upon hearing this and immediately issued a decree: "Let the Wind Department, the Cloud Department, and the Rain Department each obey their orders and go down to the mortal world. Let them, within the boundaries of Fengxian Prefecture, at this very hour today, thunder, spread clouds, and send down rain measuring three feet and forty-two drops." The four Celestial Masters received the decree and transmitted it to each department, who descended to the mortal world in due time, each displaying their divine might and acting in concert.
Wukong was in midair with Deng, Xin, Zhang, and Tao, directing the Lightning Maiden, when all the gods arrived and assembled together. There the wind and clouds met, and the sweet rain poured down in torrents. A fine rain:
Dense, heavy clouds; thick, dark mist.
Thunder chariots roared; lightning blazed.
Howling winds rushed; torrential rain streamed down.
It was said that a single thought could move Heaven,
and the hopes of ten thousand people were fulfilled.
All was owed to the Great Sage's exercise of his powers—
ten thousand miles of rivers and mountains were everywhere shrouded in shadow.
A fine rain that poured like rivers overturned the seas,
obscuring the wilderness and blotting out the sky.
Waterfalls hung before the eaves;
a tinkling sounded outside the windows.
In ten thousand households and a thousand gates, people chanted the Buddha's name;
on six streets and in three markets, waters flowed in floods.
The eastern and western rivers were all full;
the southern and northern streams were everywhere connected.
Withered shoots received moisture; dead trees came back to life.
In the fields, hemp and flourishing wheat grew;
in the villages, beans and grain rose high.
Traveling merchants rejoiced that trade could flow again;
farmers delighted in returning to their plowing.
From now on, millet and grain would grow in abundance,
and naturally the harvests would be bountiful.
With favorable winds and timely rain, the people lived in peace;
with calm seas and clear rivers, they enjoyed great tranquility.
In a single day, the full measure of three feet and forty-two drops of rain fell, and the gods gradually withdrew. Great Sage Sun cried out in a loud, stern voice: "All you gods of the four departments, pause your cloud-borne procession and wait while I go summon the Prefect to come and thank you all. Please part the clouds and mists and reveal your true forms, so that these mortal men may see you with their own eyes—only then will they have faith and make offerings." Upon hearing this, the gods had no choice but to halt in midair.
Wukong pressed down his cloud head and went straight into the prefecture, where he found Tripitaka, Eight Rules, and Friar Sand all coming to meet him. The Prefect advanced one step at a time, bowing in thanks. Wukong said, "Don't thank me yet. I have detained the gods of the four departments. You should summon many people to come and thank them together, so that in the future they will be willing to send rain." The Prefect immediately sent out a summons, calling everyone to come and offer thanks together. They all came, holding incense and bowing in worship. Then the gods of the four departments parted the clouds and mists and revealed their true forms. The four departments were the Rain Department, the Thunder Department, the Cloud Department, and the Wind Department. They appeared as follows:
The Dragon King manifested his form, the Thunder Generals stretched their bodies; the Cloud Boy appeared, the Wind Duke revealed his true visage. The Dragon King manifested his form—silver beard and aged countenance unmatched in the world; the Thunder Generals stretched their bodies—hooked beak and fearsome visage truly beyond compare. The Cloud Boy appeared—who could match that jade face and golden crown? The Wind Duke revealed his true visage—once like bristling brows and round gleaming eyes. Together they revealed themselves in the blue firmament above, each one arrayed in sacred dignity. The people of Fengxian Prefecture believed at last, bowed in worship, burned incense, and their wicked hearts turned away. Today they looked up and paid homage to the generals of heaven; they cleansed their hearts, turned toward goodness, and gave themselves wholly to the faith.
The divine host waited there for an hour, and the people bowed and worshipped without cease. Sun Xingzhe then rose once more in the clouds and bowed to the assembly, saying: "Thank you, thank you. I ask you all to return to your respective posts. Old Sun will instruct the households of this prefecture to make offerings to the High True Ones and to perform sacrifices at the proper seasons. From now on, let there be wind every five days and rain every ten days—and do come to save and succor them again." The gods assented and each returned to their respective departments, and there our story leaves them.
Now the Great Sage descended from the cloud's edge and said to Sanzang: "The matter is settled and the people are at peace. We may pack up and be on our way." The Prefect, upon hearing this, hastily bowed and said: "Master Sun, what are you saying? What you have done today is a kindness beyond measure. I shall have a modest banquet prepared in answer to this great favor. I shall also purchase land from the people and erect a temple in your honor, establish a living shrine to you, and carve a stone tablet with your name, to be worshipped in all four seasons. Though I were to engrave it upon my bones and carve it upon my heart, I could not repay even a ten-thousandth part—how can you speak of leaving?" Sanzang said: "Though what Your Honor says is reasonable, we are but itinerant monks traveling westward. We dare not stay long. In a day or two, we must certainly be gone." The Prefect would not hear of letting them go. That very night he dispatched many hands to prepare the feast and begin construction of the shrine.
The next day, a grand feast was laid out. The Tang Monk was invited to sit in the highest seat, while the Great Sage Sun, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Monk sat in their places. The Prefect, together with the various officials and subordinates of the prefecture, raised their cups and presented the dishes, with soft music and gentle playing, feasting for a full day. This gathering was one of true joy. A poem bears witness:
The farmlands, long parched, at last met sweet rain;
By river and by trade, all roads were open again.
Deeply we feel the grace of the holy monk who came to our prefecture;
Much have we owed to the Great Sage who ascended to the Heavenly Palace.
He lifted the three old sins and set them aside;
A single thought of faith, and the fruits of goodness spread far and wide.
Hereafter may this age be like that of Yao and Shun,
With five winds and ten rains, and abundance for ten thousand years.
One day a feast, the next day a banquet; today a repayment, tomorrow thanks. They urged them to stay for nearly half a month, only waiting for the temple and living shrine to be completed. One day, the Prefect invited the four monks to come and see it. The Tang Monk was astonished and said: "Such a massive undertaking—how could it be finished so quickly?" The Prefect said: "I urged the workmen on without rest, day and night, hastening them to complete it quickly, so that I might specially invite Your Honors to inspect it." Xingzhe laughed and said: "Truly a worthy and capable official, this worthy Prefect!" They went at once to the new temple and saw its towering pavilions and magnificent gateways, and all praised them without end. Xingzhe asked his master to leave a name for the temple. Sanzang said: "Yes—let it be called the 'Temple of Sweet Rain and Universal Salvation.'" The Prefect praised it: "Excellent, excellent!" He posted notices in gold to widely invite monks to tend the incense and offerings. To the left of the main hall, a living shrine for the four monks was erected, to be worshipped in all four seasons; temples were also built for the Thunder God, the Dragon God, and the others, in gratitude for their divine merit. When the inspection was finished, they were urged to set out at once.
The people of the entire prefecture, knowing they could not be detained much longer each prepared parting gifts, but not a single coin was accepted.
