Chapter 85: Jia Cunzhou Promoted to the Post of Langzhong; Xue Wenqi Again Incurs Penal Banishment
Now Zhao Ma was in her room grumbling about Huan, when she heard him shout from the outer room, "I only knocked over the medicine pot and spilled a little of the medicine. That girl didn't die from it, yet they all scold me—you and the rest. They blame me for having a bad heart and trample me as if they wanted me to die. Just wait—I'll finish that little wretch off one of these days, and see what you do then! Just tell them to watch out!" Zhao Ma hurriedly came out from the inner room and clapped her hand over his mouth. "You keep on talking recklessly! You'll get me killed first!" Mother and son quarreled for a while. Then Zhao Ma, remembering what Xifeng had said, grew angrier and angrier the more she thought about it, and did not send anyone to offer Xifeng a word of comfort. After a few days, Qiaojie also recovered. From then on, the resentment between the two sides was even deeper than before.
One day Lin Zhixiao came in and reported, "Today is the birthday of the Prince of Beijing. I have come to ask for Your Lordship's instructions." Jia Zheng said, "Simply follow the usual practice of previous years. Inform the Elder Lord and have the gift sent over." Lin Zhixiao assented and went off to make the arrangements. Before long, Jia She came over to consult with Jia Zheng, and they brought Jia Zhen, Jia Lian, and Baoyu along to offer birthday congratulations to the Prince of Beijing. The others thought nothing of it, but Baoyu had long admired the Prince's dignified bearing and had always hoped to see him more often. He quickly changed his clothes and followed the others to the Prince's mansion. Jia She and Jia Zheng presented their cards and waited to be summoned. Soon a eunuch came out, fingering prayer beads. Seeing Jia She and Jia Zheng, he said with a smile, "How are you, my lords?" Jia She and Jia Zheng both hurriedly returned his greeting. The three younger men also came forward to pay their respects. The eunuch said, "His Highness bids you enter." So the five of them followed the eunuch into the mansion. After passing through two sets of gates and turning past a hall, they reached the inner palace gate. As soon as they arrived, they stopped, and the eunuch went in first to announce them to the Prince. Meanwhile, the junior eunuchs at the gate all came forward to greet them. Soon the eunuch came out and said, "Please enter," and the five of them followed respectfully. They saw the Prince of Beijing, dressed in formal robes, already waiting in the corridor outside the hall. Jia She and Jia Zheng came forward first to pay their respects, followed in order by Zhen, Lian, and Baoyu. The Prince of Beijing took hold of Baoyu's hand and said, "I haven't seen you for a long time—I've missed you very much." Then he asked with a smile, "How is your jade?" Baoyu bowed and made half a genuflection before replying, "Thanks to Your Highness's blessing, it is well." The Prince said, "Since you've come today, I have nothing particularly good to offer you to eat, but we can all chat together." As he spoke, several elderly eunuchs raised the portière. The Prince said "Please" and went in first, followed by the others, who entered with bowed heads. First Jia She invited the Prince to receive their formal compliments, and the Prince made a few polite demurrals, but Jia She had already knelt down. Then Jia Zheng and the others performed their obeisances in turn—but there is no need to describe this in detail.
After Jia She and the others had respectfully withdrawn, the Prince instructed the eunuchs to entertain the other relatives and old friends in another place, but he kept Baoyu there to talk with him and offered him a seat. Baoyu kowtowed in thanks and sat sideways on a brocade stool near the door. They discussed his studies and essay writing for a while, and the Prince was most gracious to him. After serving tea, he said, "Yesterday the Governor, Wu, came to pay his respects at court. He spoke of your father's former tenure as Education Commissioner, saying that he had acted with the utmost impartiality and that all the students had the highest regard for him. When he was received in audience, the Emperor himself asked about him, and he spoke very highly of him. This must be a good omen for your father." Baoyu stood up at once, and after hearing this, replied, "This is due to Your Highness's grace and Governor Wu's kindness." Just then a junior eunuch came in and reported, "The other gentlemen and lords outside are all in the front hall, thanking Your Highness for the banquet." He presented the cards of thanks and the midday greetings. The Prince glanced at them, handed them back to the junior eunuch, and said with a smile, "Very well. Thank them for me." The junior eunuch then added, "The meal that His Highness ordered for Jia Baoyu alone has been prepared." The Prince then told the eunuch to take Baoyu to a very small and elegant courtyard, where someone was sent to accompany him while he ate. After the meal, Baoyu came back to express his thanks. The Prince said some more kind words, then suddenly remarked with a smile, "When I saw your jade the other time, I found it very interesting. I went home and described its shape and had one made for myself. It's a good thing you came today—you can take it back with you to amuse yourself." He ordered a junior eunuch to fetch it and handed it personally to Baoyu. Baoyu received it with both hands and thanked him, then withdrew. The Prince also sent two junior eunuchs to accompany him, and then Baoyu returned with Jia She and the others. Jia She went back to his own quarters.
Here Jia Zheng returned with the three of them to pay their respects to the Dowager and inquire after her health, and told her briefly of the people they had met at the mansion. Baoyu also reported to Jia Zheng what Lord Wu had said about his audience at court and his recommendation. Jia Zheng said, "Lord Wu is an old friend of ours. He belongs to our sort of people, and he has backbone, too." After a few more remarks of no consequence, the Dowager told them to go and rest. Jia Zheng withdrew, Zhen, Lian, and Baoyu following him to the gate. "Go back all of you and keep my mother company," he said, and went back to his rooms. He had barely sat down when a young maid came to report, "Lin Zhixiao is outside, asking to speak with you, sir." She handed him a red visiting card bearing the name of Lord Wu, the provincial governor. Jia Zheng knew this was a return call and told the girl to show Lin Zhixiao in. He went out to the veranda. Lin Zhixiao came in and reported, "Governor Wu called today. I turned him away, sir. I also heard that a vacancy has occurred among the directors of the Board of Works, and people outside as well as in the Board are saying that you are being considered for the post." "We shall see," said Jia Zheng. After Lin Zhixiao had made a few more reports he withdrew.
Now when Zhen, Lian, and Baoyu went back, only Baoyu went to the Dowager's apartments. There he described the gracious way Prince Bejing had treated her and produced his jade. They all looked at it and laughed. The Dowager told a servant to put it away for him, so that it would not get lost. "Mind you look after your jade carefully," she said. "Don't get them mixed up." Baoyu took it from around his neck. "This isn't my jade. How could I have dropped it? The two pieces are very different, they could never be confused. I was just going to tell you, Grandmother, the other night when I went to bed I took my jade off and hung it inside my bed-curtain. It actually gave off a light, and the whole bed-curtain was red." "You're talking nonsense again," said the Dowager. "The trimming of your bed-curtain is red, and of course the firelight makes it look red." "It wasn't that. By then the lamp had been put out and the room was pitch dark, yet I could still see it." Lady Xing and Lady Wang smiled. "That's a good omen," said Xifeng. "What good omen?" asked Baoyu. "You wouldn't understand," said the Dowager. "We've had a busy day today. Go and rest now. Don't stand here talking nonsense." Baoyu lingered a while longer before going back to the Garden.
At the Dowager's apartments Lady Wang was asked, "By the way, did you discuss this matter with Aunt Xue when you visited her?" "We meant to go before," said Lady Wang, "but Miss Feng had to stay with Qiaojie because of her illness, so we put it off for two days and only went today. We told her everything. Aunt Xue is quite willing, only Pan isn't at home at present. Now that his father has died, we must discuss it with him before anything can be settled." "That's only natural," said the Dowager. "In that case, don't mention it to anyone else for the time being. We'll wait until Her Ladyship has made up her mind." Leaving the discussion of the match at the Dowager's, let us return to Baoyu, who on reaching his own rooms told Xiren, "Grandmother and Sister Feng were talking in riddles just now. I couldn't make out what they meant." Xiren thought for a moment, then smiled. "I can't guess either. Was Miss Lin there when they were talking?" "Miss Lin has just been ill. She hasn't been over to Grandmother's for some time." Even as they spoke, they heard Sheyue and Qiuwen quarrelling in the outer room. "What are you two squabbling about now?" called Xiren. "We were playing cards," said Sheyue. "When she won she took my money, but when she lost she wouldn't pay up. That would have been all right, but she even snatched all my money away." "What does a few cents matter?" said Baoyu with a laugh. "Don't quarrel, silly girl." At this they both pouted and sat down in silence. Then Xiren settled Baoyu for the night. But no more of that.
Meanwhile, Xiren, having heard what Baoyu just said, well knew that the matter of proposing marriage for Baoyu had been broached. Fearing that Baoyu, prone to foolish fancies, might say any number of silly things if the subject were raised, she pretended ignorance; yet in her own heart, this was the thing that concerned her most. That night, lying in bed, she thought up a plan: she would go and see Zijuan, observe what was going on, and naturally find out. The next morning, she rose early, sent Baoyu off to school, dressed and groomed herself, and then made her way slowly to Bamboo Lodge. She found Zijuan there snipping flowers. Seeing Xiren come in, Zijuan said with a grin, "Sister, come sit in the room." "We're sitting. Picking flowers, are you? And where's Miss Lin?" "Miss Lin has just finished washing and dressing and is waiting for her medicine to warm." As she spoke, Zijuan came in with Xiren. They found Daiyu sitting there reading a book. Xiren said with a smile, "No wonder Miss Lin wears herself out—the moment she gets up, she reads. If our Master Bao could study the way Miss Lin does, wouldn't that be fine?" Daiyu smiled and put the book down. Xueyan had already brought in a small tea tray bearing a cup of medicine and a cup of water, while a little maid followed behind, holding a spittoon and a rinsing basin. Xiren had originally come to sound things out, but after sitting a while, she found no opening. She reflected that Daiyu was the most suspicious of people; if she failed to get any news and instead offended her, that would be bad. After sitting a bit longer, she made some idle remarks and took her leave. When she reached the gate to Happy Red Court, she saw two men standing there. Xiren did not want to go further, but one of them had already spotted her and came hurrying over. Xiren saw it was Chumaoyao and asked, "What are you doing?" "Master Yun the Second just came with a note for Master Bao. I'm waiting here for a reply." "Master Bao goes to school every day. Don't you know that? What reply are you waiting for?" Chumaoyao laughed. "I told him that. He said to tell the young lady, and wait for her reply." Xiren was about to speak when the other man slowly edged closer. Looking more carefully, she saw it was Jia Yun, slinking over in that furtive way of his. Recognizing him, Xiren quickly said to Chumaoyao, "Tell him we've received it. We'll show it to Master Bao when he gets back." Jia Yun had wanted to come over and speak to Xiren—merely out of a desire to get close to her—but not daring to be presumptuous, he could only pace slowly over. He was not far away when Xiren said these words, and since he could not very well advance further, he had to stop. By then Xiren had already turned her back and was heading inside. Jia Yun had no choice but to turn back, crestfallened, and left with Chumaoyao.
That evening, when Baoyu returned to his room, Xiren reported, "Young Master Yun the Second came to the corridor today." "What for?" "He also brought a note." "Where is it? Bring it here for me to look at." Sheyue went into the inner room and fetched it from the top of the bookcase. Baoyu took it and saw that the outer cover read, "Respectfully submitted to my esteemed uncle." "This child—why won't he acknowledge me as his father anymore?" "What do you mean?" "When he sent me those white begonias a couple of years ago, he called me 'Esteemed Father.' Now the cover of this note says 'Uncle'—isn't that refusing to acknowledge me again?" "He ought to be ashamed, and so should you. He's so grown up, and he acknowledges someone your size as his father—isn't he the one who ought to be ashamed? You, in all seriousness, aren't even—" She flushed red and gave a slight smile. Baoyu noticed and said, "That's hard to say. As the proverb goes: 'A monk has no sons, but filial sons are plentiful.' It's just that I found him clever and likable, so I let him do it. If he's not willing, I'm not that eager for it." As he spoke, he began opening the note. Xiren also laughed. "That Young Master Yun is a bit sly too. Sometimes he wants to look at people, and other times he hides and skulks about. Clearly he's a shifty character." Baoyu, absorbed in reading the note, paid no attention to Xiren's remarks. Xiren watched him reading—frowning once, smiling once, shaking his head—and eventually looking thoroughly exasperated. When he had finished, Xiren asked, "What's it about?" Baoyu said nothing in reply and had already torn the note into several pieces. Seeing this, Xiren did not press him further and instead asked whether he would read after supper. "That Yun child is really a scamp," Baoyu said. Since he hadn't answered her question, Xiren smiled slightly and asked again, "What exactly is it about?" "What's the point of asking? Let's eat. After we eat, let's rest. I'm feeling terribly vexed." He called a little maid to bring a light and burned the torn-up note.
Presently the maids laid out the meal. Baoyu simply sat there in a daze. Xiren coaxed and cajoled him until he managed a mouthful of food, then he set it aside and lay listlessly on the bed. After a while, tears suddenly began to fall. At this, neither Xiren nor Sheyue could make heads or tails of his behaviour.
Sheyue said, "What on earth is the matter now, when everything was perfectly fine? It's all on account of some fellow called Yun'er or Yu'er—who knows what business it was—sending such a ridiculous note, making him act like a fool, crying one moment and laughing the next. If he's going to carry on like this mysterious gourd day in and day out, how is anyone supposed to bear it?" As she spoke, she herself grew distressed. Xiren, standing to the side, could not help wanting to laugh. She tried to soothe her: "Good sister, don't vex him any more. He's got enough to deal with on his own, and now you're carrying on too. What's written on that note—does it have anything to do with you?"
Sheyue said, "You're talking nonsense. Who knows what sort of rubbish was written on that note, and you go dragging other people into it. If we're going that way, I dare say the note probably has more to do with *you*."
Before Xiren could reply, they heard Baoyu on the bed give a sudden snort of laughter. He sat up, shook out his clothes, and said, "Let's go to sleep, and stop all this fuss. I've got to get up early to study tomorrow." So saying, he lay down and slept. Nothing further happened that night.
The next day, Baoyu rose, washed, and dressed, then set off for the family school. He had just walked out of the courtyard gate when a thought struck him. He told Beiming to wait a moment, hurried back inside, and called out: "Sister Sheyue!" Sheyue came out and answered, "Why have you come back again?"
Baoyu said, "Yun'er's coming today. Tell him not to make any trouble here. If he does, I'll go straight to the Old Lady and the Master."
Sheyue acknowledged the instruction, and Baoyu turned to go. He had barely walked outside when he saw Jia Yun hurrying in in a flurry. Catching sight of Baoyu, Jia Yun quickly paid his respects. "Many congratulations, Uncle!" he said.
Baoyu guessed this had to do with the previous day's affair. "You really are reckless," he said. "Never mind whether someone has worries or not—you just come barging in to stir things up."
Jia Yun said with an ingratiating smile, "If Uncle doesn't believe me, just go and look for yourself. They've all arrived—they're at our main gate."
Baoyu grew even more agitated. "What are you talking about?"
Even as he spoke, a great clamour arose from outside.
Jia Yun said, "Don't you hear that, Uncle?"
Baoyu was more suspicious than ever. Then he heard someone shouting: "You people have no manners at all! What sort of place do you think this is, making such a racket here?"
Another voice answered: "His Lordship has been promoted—why shouldn't we come to celebrate? Other families would be desperate for such a celebration and can't have it."
Only then did Baoyu realise that Jia Zheng had been promoted to the rank of Director, and these people had come to bring the good news. He was naturally overjoyed. He was about to hurry off when Jia Yun pressed forward and said, "Isn't this wonderful, Uncle? If your marriage goes ahead as well, that'll be a double celebration!"
Baoyu flushed and spat. "Pah! Insufferable creature! Hurry up and be off!"
Jia Yun blushed and said, "What's so terrible about that? I can see that you, sir, just don't—"
Baoyu said with a stern face: "Don't what?"
Before Jia Yun could finish, he dared say no more.
Baoyu hurried along to the family school and found old Dai Ru smiling. "I just heard about your father's promotion. So you've still come today?"
Baoyu said with a polite smile, "I came to pay my respects to you, sir, so that I might then go over to my father."
Dai Ru said, "No need to come today. I'll give you the day off. But you're not to go back to the Garden to play. You're not a child any more. Though you can't handle affairs yet, you ought to follow your elder brother and learn from him."
Baoyu assented and came back. He had just reached the inner gate when Li Gui came to meet him, standing to the side with a smile. "So the Second Young Master is here! I was just about to go to the school to fetch you."
Baoyu smiled. "Who said to?"
Li Gui said, "The Old Lady just sent someone to the courtyard looking for you. The young ladies there said you'd gone to the school. Then the Old Lady sent someone out to tell me to ask you for a few days' leave. I hear they're going to put on an opera to celebrate as well. And here you are."
As he spoke, Baoyu went in himself. Passing through the inner gate, he saw that all the maids and old women in the courtyard were beaming. Seeing him come, they smiled and said: "You're here at last, Second Young Master! Hurry in and congratulate the Old Lady!"
Baoyu entered the room with a smile. He saw Daiyu sitting beside the Lady Dowager on her left, and Xiangyun on her right. Below them stood the two Ladies Xing and Wang. Tanchun, Xichun, Li Wan, Fengjie, Li Wen, Li Qi, Xing Xiuyan, and the other sisters were all in the room, but Baochai, Baoqin, and Yingchun were nowhere to be seen. Baoyu was so overjoyed he could scarcely speak. He hurried to offer his congratulations to the Lady Dowager, then to the two Ladies Xing and Wang, greeted each of his cousins in turn, and then turned to Daiyu with a smile. "How is your health now, sister — much better?"
Daiyu smiled in return. "Much better. I heard that Second Brother was also unwell. Are you recovered?"
Baoyu said, "Indeed. That night my heart suddenly began to ache. I've only just gotten well enough to go back to school these past few days, so I couldn't come to see you."
Before he could finish, Daiyu had already turned her head away and begun speaking to Tanchun.
Fengjie, standing below, laughed. "The two of you act as though you aren't together every day — you're like guests with all this polite talk. It's what people call 'treating each other as honored guests.'"
Everyone burst into laughter. Lin Daiyu flushed crimson all over her face, not knowing whether to speak or hold her tongue. After a moment she finally managed, "What do you know about such things?"
The others laughed even harder. Fengjie, a beat too late, realized she had spoken rashly and was just trying to change the subject when suddenly Baoyu said to Daiyu, "Sister Lin, have you seen that rash fellow, Little Yun?" He had already spoken before he thought better of it, and fell silent again.
This set everyone laughing once more. "Where on earth did that come from?" they said.
Daiyu, completely bewildered, could only manage an awkward smile.
Baoyu, having nothing else to say, tried again: "But just now I heard someone mention sending a theatrical troupe — on what day?"
Everyone looked at him and laughed.
Fengjie said, "You heard it outside — come and tell us. Who are you asking now?"
Baoyu seized the opportunity. "I'll go back outside and ask."
The Lady Dowager said, "Don't go running outside. First of all, you might be mocked by the well-wishers. Second, your father is greatly pleased today — if he comes back and finds you, he'll only get angry again."
Baoyu answered "Yes" and went out.
Here the Lady Dowager asked Fengjie who had spoken of sending the theatrical troupe.
Fengjie replied, "It was from your brother-in-law's side. They said the day after tomorrow is auspicious, so they're sending a company of new young actors to congratulate Your Ladyship, the Master, and the Madam." She added with a smile, "Not only is it an auspicious day — it's a very fine day indeed."
As she said this, she glanced at Daiyu and smiled. Daiyu smiled back.
Lady Wang said, "Indeed — the day after tomorrow is also our niece's special day."
The Lady Dowager thought for a moment, then laughed. "I see I'm getting old and muddled about everything. It's a good thing I have my little Feng girl — she's my 'remonstrance official.' Since that's the case, very well then — her uncle's family will congratulate them, and your uncle's family will celebrate your birthday. Isn't that splendid?"
Everyone laughed and said, "When the Ancestress speaks, every word carries weight — no wonder she enjoys such great fortune!"
Just then Baoyu came back in and, hearing all this, was so delighted he practically danced with joy.
For the time being, everyone took their meal at the Lady Dowager's side, and it was a most lively affair — no need to describe it further.
After the meal, Jia Zheng returned from expressing his thanks to the Emperor, paid his respects at the ancestral hall, then came to kowtow to the Lady Dowager. After standing and exchanging a few words, he went out to call on his guests.
Here relatives and members of the clan came and went in an unbroken stream — a great bustling throng, carriages and horses filling the gate, officials in embroidered robes filling every seat. Truly:
When flowers are in full bloom, bees and butterflies swarm;
When the moon is perfectly round, the sea and sky are vast and wide.
Two days passed in this fashion, and the day of celebration arrived. Early that morning, Wang Ziteng and the relatives had already sent over a theatrical troupe, and a temporary stage was set up in the Lady Dowager's main reception hall. The gentlemen outside all wore their official robes to attend the guests, and the relatives who came to offer congratulations filled some ten tables of wine. Inside, because it was a new troupe and because the Lady Dowager was in high spirits, a screen of colored glass was set up in the rear hall, where tables of wine were also laid. At the upper table sat Aunt Xue, attended by Lady Wang and Baoqin. Opposite, at the Lady Dowager's table, sat Lady Xing and Xing Xiuyan. Two tables below were still empty. The Lady Dowager told them to hurry over. Presently, Fengjie appeared leading a bevy of maids, all surrounding and escorting Lin Daiyu forward. Daiyu had changed into several fresh garments and was dressed like Chang'e descending from the moon, coming out to meet everyone with a shy, smiling face.
Xiangyun, Li Wen, and Li Wan all urged her to take the seat of honor, but Daiyu would not.
The Lady Dowager laughed. "Today you shall sit there."
Aunt Xue stood up and asked, "Does Miss Lin also have a celebration today?"
The Lady Dowager smiled. "It's her birthday."
Aunt Xue said, "Oh — I'd quite forgotten!" She came over and said, "Forgive my poor memory — I'll have Baoqin come over later to wish her sister a long life."
Daiyu said with a smile, "You do me too much honor."
Everyone took their seats. Daiyu looked about carefully and noticed that Baochai alone was absent. She asked, "How is Cousin Bao? Why hasn't she come?"
Aunt Xue said, "She should have come, but there's no one to watch the house, so she couldn't."
Daiyu said, blushing and smiling, "Hasn't Auntie gained a new daughter-in-law? Why does Cousin Bao have to watch the house? I suppose she dislikes crowds and can't be bothered to come. I've been quite missing her."
Aunt Xue smiled. "It's kind of you to think of her. She often misses all of you sisters as well. In a day or two I'll have her come, and you can all have a good visit together."
The maids poured wine and served dishes, and the opera began outside. The first two pieces were naturally auspicious plays. In the third, a young boy and girl led in a young female role dressed in rainbow feathers and feathered garments, with a black cloth draped over her head. She sang a while and then exited. No one recognized it, but those outside said, "This is the new *Rui Zhu Ji*—'Ascension to the Moon Palace.' The young female role plays Chang'e, who once fell to the mortal world and was almost forced into marriage, but fortunately Guanyin enlightened her. She died unmarried and is now being summoned to the moon palace. Listen to the lyrics: 'People only know the pleasures of the mortal world, not knowing that autumn moons and spring flowers are easily cast aside—she nearly forgot the Guanghan Palace!'" The fourth piece was *Eating Chaff*, and the fifth was Bodhidharma crossing the river back with his disciples, staging illusions of mirages and seaside towers—quite a lively scene.
Everyone was enjoying themselves when suddenly the Xue family's servants burst in, sweating profusely, and said to Xue Ke, "Second Master, go back quickly, and please inform the mistress inside to return at once—there is urgent business at home." Xue Ke asked, "What happened?" The servant said, "I'll tell you at home." Without even taking his leave, Xue Ke left. When the maids inside relayed the message to Aunt Xue, she turned ashen and immediately rose, taking Baoqin with her. After a brief farewell, she got into her carriage and left at once. Everyone inside and outside was stunned. Grandmother Jia said, "Let us send someone from here to follow and find out what happened—everyone is concerned." The others agreed.
Leaving the Jia household to continue their opera, let us return with Aunt Xue. When she arrived, she found two yamen runners standing at the inner gate, accompanied by several pawnbroker's clerks, who said, "When the mistress returns, we will discuss matters." Even as they spoke, Aunt Xue entered. The yamen runners saw many men and women escorting an elderly lady and realized she was Xue Pan's mother. Seeing her imposing manner, they dared not act rashly and merely stood at attention with their hands at their sides, letting Aunt Xue pass through.
When Aunt Xue reached the back of the main hall, she heard someone wailing loudly—it was Jin Gui. Aunt Xue hurried in and saw Bao-chai come out to meet her, her face streaked with tears. Bao-chai said, "Mother, don't be alarmed yet—we must attend to the matter first." Aunt Xue entered the room with Bao-chai. She had already heard the servants' report when she came in and was trembling with fear. Through her tears, she asked, "Who did he fight with?" The servants replied, "Madam, don't ask about the details now. Whoever it was, killing someone means paying with one's life. We must discuss what to do." Aunt Xue wept, "What is there to discuss?" The servants said, "In our humble opinion, tonight we should prepare some silver and go with Second Master to see the Great Master. We should find a skilled legal scribe there, offer him some silver, and get the death penalty commuted first. Then we can return and ask the Jia household to intercede with the higher authorities. As for the yamen runners outside, Madam should give them a few taels of silver to send them away so we can get on with things." Aunt Xue said, "Find the family of the victim, offer them funeral expenses and some support money. If the plaintiff doesn't pursue the matter, things will ease." Bao-chai, from behind the curtain, said, "Mother, you mustn't. The more money you give in these matters, the worse it gets. What the young servant said just now is right." Aunt Xue wept again, "I don't care about my life anymore. Let me rush there to see him once, and die with him." Bao-chai urgently tried to comfort her while calling from behind the curtain, "Go quickly with Second Master and attend to this." The maids helped Aunt Xue inside. As Xue Ke was about to leave, Bao-chai said, "Send word as soon as you have news—just take care of things outside." Xue Ke agreed and left. Only then did Bao-chai turn to comfort Aunt Xue. Meanwhile, Jin Gui seized the opportunity to grab Xiangling and berated her, "You always boast that when someone in their family kills a person, nothing happens—they just come to the capital. Now you've egged him on until he really has killed someone. You always talk about having money, power, and good connections, but now I see you're all panicking and at your wits' end. If the Great Master doesn't come back safely tomorrow, you'll all go your own ways and leave me to suffer alone!" She burst into tears again. When Aunt Xue heard this, she grew even more distraught. Bao-chai was at her wit's end. In the midst of the commotion, Lady Wang of the Jia household had already sent a senior maid to inquire. Though Bao-chai knew she was already considered a member of the Jia family, the matter had not yet been formally announced, and in this emergency, she said to the senior maid, "We don't yet know the full story. We only heard that my elder brother killed someone outside and was arrested by the county—we don't know what sentence he'll receive. Second Master has just gone to find out. In a day or so, when we have definite news, we will send word to the mistress there. Please go back and thank the mistress for her concern—we will need the gentlemen there to help us in many things." The maid agreed and left. Aunt Xue and Bao-chai were left at home, helpless and uncertain.
Two days later, a young servant returned with a letter, which he gave to a junior maid to bring inside. When Bao-chai opened and read it, the letter said:
Elder Brother's case is one of accidental injury, not premeditated murder. This morning we used Ke's name to submit an appeal through proper channels, but the judgment has not yet been issued. Elder Brother's previous confession was very unfavorable. Once this appeal is approved, we'll hold another hearing, and if he can retract his statement to better effect, there may yet be hope for his life. Hurry and fetch another five hundred taels from the pawnshop for expenses. Whatever you do, do not delay. And please reassure Mother. For the rest, ask the servant boy.
Baochai read through it all and recited it word for word to Aunt Xue. Aunt Xue wiped her tears and said, "From what you tell me, it sounds as though his life hangs in the balance." Baochai said, "Mother, don't grieve just yet. Wait until we've called the servant boy in and gotten a clear account." She at once sent a young maid to fetch the boy inside. Aunt Xue questioned the servant boy: "Tell me everything you know about the Elder Young Master's affair." The servant boy said, "That night I overheard the Elder Young Master and Second Young Master talking, and it left me utterly bewildered."
What the servant boy said next will be told in the following chapter.
