Chapter 80
Hua Xin and a host of other civil and military officials entered the presence of Emperor Xian to present their memorial. Hua Xin said: "We have observed that since the Prince of Wei ascended his throne, his virtue has spread in all directions and his benevolence has reached all living things. He surpasses all rulers of old, even Yao and Shun could not exceed him. The assembled ministers have discussed the matter and conclude that the destiny of Han has run its course. They beseech Your Majesty to follow the example of Yao and Shun and yield the mountains, rivers, and altars of the state to the Prince of Wei. This will accord with Heaven's will above and the hearts of the people below. Then Your Majesty may enjoy a peaceful and carefree happiness. Our ancestors will be blessed! The people will be blessed! We ministers have reached our decision and have come especially to present this petition."
When the Emperor heard this memorial, he was greatly alarmed. For a long while he could not speak. Then he looked at the assembled officials and wept, saying: "I reflect that my ancestor of old raised a three-foot sword and rose to slay the White Serpent. He swept away Qin and conquered Chu and founded the empire, which has been handed down through the generations for four hundred years. Though I am lacking in ability, I have committed no fault or wrong. How can I bear to lightly cast away the great inheritance of my ancestors? Let you ministers deliberate further on this matter."
Hua Xin led Li Fu and Xu Zhi forward to address the throne. Li Fu said: "If Your Majesty does not believe us, you may question these two." Li Fu then memorialized: "Since the Prince of Wei assumed the throne, the unicorn has descended, the phoenix has come, the yellow dragon has appeared, abundant grain has grown, and sweet dew has fallen. These are auspicious omens from Heaven showing that Wei should replace Han." Xu Zhi added: "We are charged with the oversight of astronomy. At night we observe the heavens and have noted that the vital aura of the House of Han has reached its end, while Your Majesty's imperial star is dim and obscure. On the other hand, the astral signs of the state of Wei extend across the sky and permeate the earth—it is beyond our power to describe them fully. Moreover, there is a further confirmation in the prophetic writings. The prophecy says: 'The demon at the side, the grain stalks conjoined; It replaces Han—words cannot be spoken. Words in the east, noon in the west; Two suns shining, shifted up and down.' From this we argue that Your Majesty should soon yield the throne. 'The demon at the side, the grain stalks conjoined' forms the character *Wei* (魏). 'Words in the east, noon in the west' forms the character *Xu* (許). 'Two suns shining, shifted up and down' forms the character *Chang* (昌). This means that Wei at Xuchang should receive the abdication of Han. We pray Your Majesty will consider this."
The Emperor said: "Auspicious omens and prophetic writings are all empty and baseless things. How can you wish me, on the basis of such empty and baseless things, to abandon the inherited foundations of my ancestors?" Wang Lang memorialized: "Since ancient times, where there is rise there must be fall; where there is prosperity there must be decay. Is there any state that does not perish, any house that does not fail? The House of Han has been transmitted for more than four hundred years, and now, coming down to Your Majesty, its destiny is exhausted. You should withdraw soon and not delay, for delay will breed trouble."
The Emperor wept bitterly and retired to the inner palace. The officials left with scornful smiles.
The next day the officials assembled again in the great hall and sent a eunuch to request the Emperor to come forth. The Emperor was too troubled and afraid to appear. Empress Cao said: "The officials are asking Your Majesty to hold court. Why do you refuse?" The Emperor wept and said: "Your brother wishes to usurp the throne and has set the ministers to coerce me. That is why I will not go." Empress Cao flared with anger, saying: "How could my brother do such a rebellious and disorderly thing!"
Before she finished speaking, Cao Hong and Cao Xiu appeared, swords at their sides, and requested the Emperor to come forth from the palace. Empress Cao cursed them, saying: "You are all disorderly wretches, scheming for wealth and honor, plotting together in rebellion! My father's merit covered the whole world and his fame shook all under Heaven, yet he did not dare to usurp the sacred instrument of rule. Now my brother has not been on the throne long before he thinks to usurp Han. Surely Heaven will not bless him!"
With these words she wept bitterly and returned to her palace. The attendants on every side sobbed and shed tears.
Cao Hong and Cao Xiu pressed the Emperor to come forth. Unable to resist, the Emperor changed his robes and came out to the front hall. Hua Xin memorialized: "Your Majesty should follow the proposal we made yesterday, to avoid great calamity." The Emperor wept and said: "You have all drawn the salary of Han for a long time. Among you are many sons and grandsons of Han's meritorious ministers. How can you bring yourselves to commit such disloyal acts?"
Hua Xin said: "If Your Majesty does not follow the general opinion, I fear that ere long trouble will arise within the palace walls. It is not that we ministers are disloyal to Your Majesty."
The Emperor said: "Who would dare to slay me?"
Hua Xin said sternly: "All the people of the empire know that Your Majesty does not possess the felicity of a sovereign ruler, and this is why the whole land is in great disorder. Were it not for the Prince of Wei remaining at court, how many would slay Your Majesty? Not only does Your Majesty not recognize favors and repay virtue, but you actually wish to cause all under Heaven to attack Your Majesty!"
The Emperor was greatly alarmed and rose, lifting his sleeves to depart. Wang Lang gave Hua Xin a significant look. Hua Xin strode forward, seized the imperial robe, and said with an altered countenance: "Will you consent, or will you not? Speak one word quickly!" The Emperor trembled and could not answer. Cao Hong and Cao Xiu drew their swords and shouted: "Where is the Keeper of the Seals?"
Zu Bi came forth and said: "The Keeper of the Seals is here!"
Cao Hong demanded the imperial seal. Zu Bi cried in rebuke: "The imperial seal is the treasure of the Son of Heaven. How dare you demand it without authority!"
Cao Hong ordered the guards to drag him out and behead him. Zu Bi died cursing without ceasing. A later poet has praised him thus:
*The wicked seized the power and the House of Han perished;*
*They falsely styled their abdication on Yao and Shun.*
*The whole court bowed down to honor Wei—*
*Alone the loyal Keeper of the Seals was seen.*
The Emperor trembled without ceasing. He looked upon the steps below and saw several hundred men in armor and armed with spears—all soldiers of Wei. The Emperor wept and said to the assembled ministers: "I am willing to yield the empire to the Prince of Wei. I only beg that I may be allowed to preserve my remaining breath and live out my natural span."
Jia Xu said: "The Prince of Wei will surely not fail Your Majesty. Your Majesty should quickly issue an edict to reassure the hearts of the people."
The Emperor had no choice but to order Chen Qun to draft the edict yielding the throne, and to send Hua Xin bearing the edict and the seal, leading all the officials straight to the palace of the Prince of Wei to present them. Cao Pi was overjoyed. The edict was opened and read:
"We have occupied the throne for thirty-two years. We have suffered the upheavals of the empire, but through the grace of our ancestors' spirits we have survived peril and continued to exist. Now, looking up we observe the signs of Heaven, and looking down we examine the hearts of the people. The destiny of the fiery essence has reached its end, and the course of events rests with the House of Cao. Therefore, the former king established the traces of divine martial prowess, and the present king has further illumined his bright virtue to respond to the appointed time. The succession is clearly revealed and may be known with certainty. When the Great Way prevails, the world belongs to all. Emperor Yao did not selfishly give the throne to his own son, and his fame is spread to all eternity—We secretly admire him. Now We follow in the footsteps of the Canon of Yao and yield the throne to the Chancellor, the Prince of Wei. Let him not decline!"
Cao Pi had barely finished listening to the decree when he was ready to accept it. Sima Yi remonstrated, saying, "You must not. Although the imperial edict and the seal have already arrived, Your Highness should submit a memorial declining the honor with humble words, so as to silence the slander of the realm." Cao Pi followed his counsel and ordered Wang Lang to draft a memorial, in which he described himself as lacking in virtue and begged that another worthy man be sought to succeed to the Mandate of Heaven.
When the Emperor read the memorial, he was deeply alarmed and perplexed. He said to his assembled ministers, "The King of Wei is so humble and self-effacing—what is to be done?" Hua Xin said, "In former days, when the Martial King of Wei received the title of king, he thrice declined, and only accepted when the edict would not permit further refusal. Your Majesty may now issue a second decree, and the King of Wei will naturally consent."
The Emperor had no choice. He ordered Huan Jie to draft the edict and sent the Messenger of the Ancestral Temple, Zhang Yin, bearing the imperial staff and the seal, to the palace of the King of Wei. Cao Pi opened and read the edict, which said:
"Attend, O King of Wei: Your memorial of humble refusal has been received. We privately observe that the Way of Han has long been in decline and the days of its waning have been many. It was fortunate that the Martial King Cao, by virtue answering to the auspicious signs, roused his divine might, cut away the violent and cruel, and brought peace and order to the lands within the realm. Now you, O King Pi, have inherited this legacy; your supreme virtue shines brilliantly, your teachings and influence have spread across the four seas, and your benevolent sway reaches the eight quarters. The succession of Heaven's mandate rests truly upon your person. Of old, Shun of Yu rendered twenty great services, and Fang Xun yielded the empire to him; the Great Yu achieved the work of channeling the waters, and Chong Hua yielded the imperial throne to him. The House of Han, inheriting the mandate of Yao, holds the principle of transmitting the sage. Add to this the compliance with the spirits of Heaven and the continuation of Heaven's bright decree. We therefore send the Imperial Censor Zhang Yin, bearing the staff, to present the seal and sash of the Emperor. O King, receive it!"
Cao Pi received the edict with delight, but said to Jia Xu, "Though this is the second edict, I still fear that the world and future generations will not fail to brand us with the name of usurpers." Jia Xu said, "This matter is most simple. You may order Zhang Yin to return the seal and sash, and direct Hua Xin to have the Han Emperor build a terrace, to be called the 'Terrace of the Abdication.' Let him choose an auspicious day and hour, assemble all the great and small officials, and have them come to the foot of the terrace. Then let the Son of Heaven personally present the seal and sash and yield the empire to Your Majesty. This will dispel all doubts and silence all criticism." Cao Pi was overjoyed. He at once ordered Zhang Yin to return the seal and sash and drafted another memorial of humble refusal. Zhang Yin returned and reported to Emperor Xian.
The Emperor asked his ministers, "The King of Wei declines once more—what does he intend?" Hua Xin submitted, "Your Majesty may build a terrace, to be called the 'Terrace of the Abdication,' and assemble the officials and the common people to make the abdication clear and manifest. Then Your Majesty's sons and grandsons will surely receive the favor of Wei through all generations." The Emperor consented and ordered the officials of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices to select a site at Fanyang and erect a terrace of three levels. They chose the day of the gengwu in the tenth month, at the hour of yin, for the abdication.
When the day arrived, Emperor Xian invited the King of Wei, Cao Pi, to ascend the terrace and receive the abdication. Below the terrace were assembled more than four hundred officials, great and small, and over three hundred thousand of the Imperial Tiger Guard. The Emperor personally bore the jade seal and presented it to Cao Pi. Cao Pi received it. The assembled ministers knelt below the terrace and heard the investiture document read:
"Attend, O King of Wei: In former days, Yao of Tang yielded the throne to Shun of Yu, and Shun in turn passed the mandate to Yu. Heaven's mandate does not rest forever with one house—it returns only to the virtuous. The Way of Han has declined, and the generations have lost their proper order. It has come down to Our own person, and great disorder and darkness have multiplied. The violent and rebellious have run wild, and the realm has been overturned. We relied on the divine might of the Martial King to deliver us from peril in all quarters, to bring pure order to the lands within the realm, and to preserve and secure our ancestral temples. Was it not that We alone received peace, but that all within the nine domains truly benefited from his grace? Now you, O King, reverently inherit the legacy of your predecessor and bring luster to your virtue; you restore the great enterprise of civil and martial achievement and make manifest the grand glory of your late father. Auspicious signs have descended from the August Spirit, and both men and gods have given their testimony. You alone are fitted to shine in this office, and the people have entrusted Us with this mandate. All say: 'Your virtue is equal to that of Shun of Yu; employ the ancient canons of Tang; with reverence, yield your place.' Alas! The succession of Heaven's mandate rests upon your person. O King, reverently conform to the great rite, and receive the ten thousand states in solemn acceptance of Heaven's decree!"
When the reading of the document was finished, the King of Wei, Cao Pi, received the eight great rites and ascended the imperial throne. Jia Xu led the assembled officials, great and small, to pay homage below the terrace. The reign title of Yan Kang was changed to Huang Chu. The name of the state was declared to be Great Wei. Cao Pi at once issued an edict of general amnesty throughout the empire. He posthumously honored his father Cao Cao as Emperor Wu, Grand Progenitor.
Hua Xin submitted, "'Heaven has not two suns, and the people have not two kings.' Since the Han Emperor has yielded the empire, it is fitting that he retire to the status of a vassal. We beg that a clear edict be issued settling the Liu clan in what place." Having spoken, he took Emperor Xian by the arm and made him kneel below the terrace to hear the decree. Cao Pi issued an edict creating the former Emperor the Duke of Shanyang, to depart that very day. Hua Xin, hand on his sword, pointed at the Emperor and said sternly, "To establish one emperor and depose another is the constant way of antiquity! The present sovereign is merciful and unwilling to do you harm, and has created you Duke of Shanyang. You will depart today. You are not to appear at court unless summoned!" Emperor Xian, tears in his eyes, bowed in thanks and departed on horseback. The soldiers and people below the terrace who witnessed it were deeply moved.
Cao Pi said to his ministers, "Now I understand the affairs of Shun and Yu!" All the ministers cried, "Ten thousand years!" Later generations who visited this Terrace of Abdication composed a poem lamenting:
"The labors of the two Han dynasties were no small matter,
Yet in a single morning the old mountains and rivers were lost.
In Huang Chu they sought to imitate the deeds of Tang and Yu,
But the Sima clan would later come and use it as a model."
The ministers requested that Cao Pi render thanks to Heaven and Earth. Cao Pi had barely begun to bow when a strange wind suddenly swept up before the terrace, whirling sand and stones as swiftly as a driving rain, so that one could not see the person opposite. The torches on the terrace were all blown out. Cao Pi fell in a swoon upon the terrace. The ministers rushed to his aid and bore him down from the terrace. It was some time before he regained consciousness. His attendants supported him into the palace, and for several days he was unable to hold court. When his condition had somewhat improved, he at last emerged from the hall to receive the congratulations of his ministers. He appointed Hua Xin as Minister over the Masses and Wang Lang as Minister of Works. The officials, great and small, were all promoted and rewarded in turn.
Cao Pi's illness had not yet fully healed, and he suspected that the palace at Xuchang was haunted by many evil omens. He therefore departed from Xuchang and traveled to Luoyang, where he undertook the grand construction of palaces.
Word soon reached Chengdu that Cao Pi had set himself up as Emperor of the Great Wei and was constructing palace buildings in Luoyang. It was further rumored that the Emperor of Han had been put to death. When the Prince of Hanzhong heard of this, he wept the entire day and ordered all officials to don mourning garments and to hold sacrificial rites facing north, posthumously honoring the fallen sovereign with the title "Emperor Xiaomin of Han." Xuande was so aggrieved that he fell ill from worry and could no longer manage affairs of state, entrusting all matters to Kongming.
Kongming discussed the situation with Grand Tutor Xu Jing and Gentleman of the Yellow Gate Qiao Zhou, saying that the realm could not be without a lord for a single day, and that they should urge the Prince of Hanzhong to ascend the throne. Qiao Zhou said: "Recently there have been auspicious signs—gentle winds and celebratory clouds. A yellow vapor several dozen zhang high has risen from the northwest corner of Chengdu, soaring into the heavens. The Imperial Star has appeared in the constellations Bi, Wei, and Mao, shining bright as the moon. These signs respond precisely to the moment when the Prince of Hanzhong should assume the throne and continue the Han line. What further doubt can there be?"
Kongming and Xu Jing then led officials both high and low in presenting a memorial requesting that the Prince of Hanzhong take the imperial throne. The Prince read the memorial and was greatly alarmed, saying: "Would you gentlemen make me a man of neither loyalty nor righteousness?" Kongming replied: "Not so. Cao Pi has usurped the Han and set himself up as emperor. Your Majesty is a scion of the House of Han and by right should continue the line to preserve the Han sacrifices."
The Prince changed color in anger and said: "Should I imitate the deeds of a rebel and traitor?" He rose with a sweep of his sleeve and withdrew to the inner palace. All the officials dispersed.
Three days later, Kongming again led the officials into the court and requested the Prince to come forth. They all prostrated themselves before him. Xu Jing presented a memorial saying: "The Han Emperor has now been slain by Cao Pi. If Your Majesty does not ascend the throne and lead an army to punish this rebel, you cannot be called loyal or righteous. All under heaven today wish Your Majesty to become their sovereign and to avenge Emperor Xiaomin. If you do not follow our counsel, you will forfeit the people's hopes."
The Prince said: "Although I am a grandson of Emperor Jing, I have shown no virtue or bounty to the people. If I set myself up as emperor now, how would that differ from usurpation?"
Kongming earnestly urged him several times, but the Prince firmly refused. Kongming then devised a plan and said to the officials: "Let it be thus and thus." Thereupon Kongming feigned illness and would not leave his residence.
When the Prince heard that Kongming was gravely ill, he went in person to the residence and went straight to the bedside, asking: "What illness afflicts you, Master Strategist?" Kongming replied: "My heart burns with worry—my days are numbered." The Prince asked: "What troubles you, Master Strategist?" He asked several times, but Kongming only pleaded the severity of his illness and closed his eyes without answering. The Prince pressed him again and again. At last Kongming sighed deeply and said: "Since I left my thatched cottage and met Your Majesty, I have followed you to this day, and my words have been heeded. Now, by good fortune, Your Majesty possesses the two provinces of Sichuan, and I have not failed my long-held promises. But now Cao Pi has usurped the throne, and the Han sacrifices are about to be extinguished. All the civil and military officials wish to support Your Majesty as emperor, to destroy the Wei and restore the Han, that they might together achieve merit and fame. I never expected Your Majesty to refuse so stubbornly. The officials are all growing resentful, and before long they will surely scatter. If the officials disperse, and Wu and Wei attack, the two provinces will be impossible to defend. How can I not be anxious?"
The Prince said: "I am not refusing out of mere ceremony—I fear the criticism of the world." Kongming said: "The sage teaches: 'If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things.' Now Your Majesty's cause is both correct and proper—what is there to criticize? Have you not heard: 'What Heaven bestows and you do not take, you will suffer the consequences'?"
The Prince said: "When the Master Strategist has recovered from his illness, we may act without delay."
Upon hearing this, Kongming leaped from his couch, struck the screen with his hand, and all the civil and military officials outside entered and prostrated themselves, saying: "Since Your Majesty has consented, please choose a day to perform the great ceremony."
The Prince looked and saw Grand Tutor Xu Jing, General Who Pacifies Han Mi Zhu, Marquis of Qingyi Shang Ju, Marquis of Yangquan Liu Bao, Assistant Magistrate Zhao Zuo, Secretariat Director Yang Hong, Consultant Du Qiong, Attendant Clerk Zhang Shuang, Minister of Ceremonies Lai Gong, Gentleman of the Yellow Gate Huang Quan, Libationer He Zong, Scholar Yin Mo, Assistant Director Qiao Zhou, Grand Marshal Yin Chun, General of the Partial Army Zhang Yi, Palace Assistant Minister Wang Mou, Erudite of the Imperial Library Yi Ji, Attendant Clerk Qin Mi, and others.
The Prince of Hanzhong said in alarm: "You gentlemen would plunge me into unrighteousness!" Kongming said: "Since Your Majesty has granted our request, let us build an altar and choose an auspicious day to perform the great ceremony with all due solemnity."
The Prince was escorted back to the palace at once. On one side, Kongming ordered the Scholar Xu Ci and the Remonstrance Counselor Meng Guang to oversee the rituals, and an altar was constructed south of Mount Wudan in Chengdu. When all preparations were complete, numerous officials arranged the imperial carriage and escorted the Prince of Hanzhong to the altar to perform the sacrifice. Qiao Zhou stood upon the altar and read the sacrificial text aloud:
"On the first day of the fourth month, the year of the twenty-sixth of the Jian'an reign, counting to the twelfth day, the Emperor Bei dares to make this announcement to August Heaven and Earth beneath it: The House of Han has held the realm, and its allotted span knows no limit. In former times, Wang Mang usurped and stole the throne; Emperor Guangwu, in his wrath, struck him down, and the altars of soil and grain were preserved. Now Cao Cao, with his cruel and ruthless armies, murdered the empress—his crimes fill the heavens. Cao Cao's son Pi has continued in his vicious wickedness and has seized the sacred vessels of imperial power. The officers and men of all ranks believe that the Han sacrifices have been abandoned and that Bei should continue them, following in the footsteps of the two founding emperors and carrying out the punishment of Heaven. Bei fears that he lacks the virtue to be worthy of the imperial position. He has consulted the common people and, beyond them, the rulers of distant lands, and all say: 'The Mandate of Heaven cannot be refused, the legacy of the ancestors cannot be allowed to lapse for long, and the world cannot be without a lord.' All within the Four Seas look to Bei alone. Bei, in awe of Heaven's bright Mandate, and fearing that the legacy of Emperor Gao and Emperor Guangwu will fall to the ground, has carefully chosen an auspicious day, ascended this altar, and made this sacrifice. He receives the imperial seal and sash and assumes governance over the four directions. May the spirits bestow blessings upon the House of Han and forever secure its allotted span!"
Having finished reading the memorial text, Zhuge Liang led the assembled officials in respectfully presenting the jade imperial seal. The Prince of Hanzhong received it, held it upon the altar, and repeatedly declined, saying, "I lack both talent and virtue. I beg you to select one who possesses both to receive it instead."
Zhuge Liang memorialized, "Your Majesty has pacified the four seas, and your merits shine resplendently throughout the world. Moreover, you are of the royal House of Han. It is fitting that you ascend to the throne. You have already made sacrifice and announced your mandate to the Heavenly Spirits—what further reason is there to decline?"
The civil and military officials all cried, "Long live the Emperor!" When the ceremonies of obeisance and prostration were complete, the reign title was changed to Zhangwu, Year One. Imperial Consort Wu was established as Empress, and the eldest son, Liu Shan, as Crown Prince. The second son, Liu Yong, was enfeoffed as Prince of Lu, and Liu Li as Prince of Liang. Zhuge Liang was appointed Chancellor, and Xu Jing as Minister over the Masses. High and low officials were each promoted and rewarded in turn. A general amnesty was proclaimed throughout the realm. The soldiers and common folk of the two provinces of the Riverlands rejoiced without exception.
The following day, court was held. The civil and military officials paid their obeisance and ranged themselves in two rows. The First Sovereign issued an edict, saying: "Since I swore brotherhood with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei in the Peach Garden, we pledged to live and die together. Alas, my second brother, Yun Chang, was slain by Sun Quan of Eastern Wu. If I do not avenge him, I betray our oath. I wish to raise the armies of the entire realm to attack Eastern Wu, capture the rebel alive, and thereby wash away this hatred!"
Before he had finished speaking, a man within the ranks prostrated himself upon the steps and remonstrated, saying, "This must not be done."
The First Sovereign looked and saw it was Zhao Yun, the General of Martial Fierceness.
Thus it was:
The sovereign had scarcely set in motion Heaven's punishment,
When a minister below was heard offering forthright counsel.
What Zilong said in his remonstrance, you shall learn in the chapter that follows.
