Ode to Xi Shi
Her beauty, prized beneath the heavens, how long could Xishi remain obscure?
At dawn she was still a girl by the Yue Stream; by evening she was a palace consort of Wu.
In her lowly days, was she truly different from the crowd? Only when she rose in station did they realize how rare she was.
She summoned others to powder her with fragrant cosmetics; she did not dress herself in silk robes.
The more her lord favored her, the more captivating her grace became; the more he doted, the less room there was for right or wrong.
Those who once washed silk beside her could not ride home beside her in the same carriage.
Take this message to the neighbor's daughter: what hope is there in imitating her frown?
