# Chapter 74
## On Errands in the Garden: A Fracas over a Hair Ornament; In the Ning Mansion: A Lady of Principle Refuses All Visitors
In the previous chapter, Ping'er had just listened to Yingchun's account and was smiling to herself when Baoyu arrived. Now, the younger sister of the wife of the head cook, Wife Liu, had also been found guilty of lending money at interest and running gambling dens. Among the garden staff, there were those who had long borne a grudge against the Liu family, and they now informed on Wife Liu, claiming that she and her sister were in cahoots — though her sister's name was on the operation, the profits were in fact split evenly between them. For this reason, Xifeng wanted to punish the Liu family. When Wife Liu received this news, she panicked. Knowing she had always been on the best side of the people at Happy Red Court, she went there quietly to plead with Qingwen, Xingxing-Boli, and the others. Xingxing-Boli told Baoyu. Baoyu reflected that Yingchun's own wet nurse was currently guilty of the same offense, so it would be better to go together with Yingchun and intercede on behalf of the Liu family, rather than going alone to plead solely for the Lius. That was why he had come. Suddenly, he found so many people gathered there, and when they saw him, they all asked: "Is your better? What are you doing here?" Baoyu found it inconvenient to mention the intercession and said only, "I've come to see Second Sister." The others thought nothing of it and fell into idle chatter. Ping'er went out to deal with the matter of the filigree gold phoenix hairpin. Wang Da'er's wife followed close behind her, begging in every way she could: "Please, miss, be generous with your words — I'll redeem it and bring it back, no matter what." Ping'er laughed and said: "Whether you redeem it late or early, if things had to come to this, why didn't you do it sooner? If your conscience could be cleared, then it would be cleared. But since it's come to this, I'd hate to report you — go and redeem it quickly, bring it to me, and I'll say nothing about it." Only then did Wang Da'er's wife set her mind at ease. She bowed in thanks and said: "Please go about your business, miss. I'll fetch it this evening, report to you first, and then deliver it. How would that be?" Ping'er said: "If you don't come by evening, don't blame me." With that, they parted ways and went their separate roads.
When Ping'er returned to the room, Xifeng asked her: "What did Third Young Lady want you for?" Ping'er smiled and said: "Third Young Lady was afraid you were upset, madam, and asked me to comfort you a little and to ask what you've been eating these past few days." Xifeng laughed and said: "She still remembers me. Just now another matter came up — someone reported that Wife Liu the Second and her sister have been running gambling dens together, and that everything the sister did was on her orders. I recall that you've always advised me, 'Better to do less than more' — that I should give my mind a rest now and then and take care of myself. I didn't listen, and sure enough, things turned out badly. First I offended the Lady, and then I made myself sick for nothing. Now I've seen through it all — let them make as much trouble as they like, there are plenty of others around. I've wasted my energy for nothing and earned nothing but curses from everyone. I'll focus on recovering from my illness. Even when I'm well, I'll be a good-natured gentleman — enjoy what's enjoyable, laugh when there's cause for laughter, and leave all right and wrong to others. So I've simply acknowledged the matter and let it go — it's not on my mind at all." Ping'er said: "If you truly feel that way, madam, then we're blessed."
Before she had finished speaking, Jia Lian came in, clapping his hands and sighing: "Just when things were fine, more trouble starts. The other day when I borrowed money from Yuanyang, how did the Lady on that side find out? Just now the Lady summoned me and told me to find two hundred taels of silver from somewhere, no matter where, for use during the Mid-Autumn Festival on the fifteenth of the eighth month. I said there was nowhere to get it. The Lady said: 'If you don't have money, there must be somewhere you can get it. I discussed it with you in good faith, and you fobbed me off — you said there was nowhere. Where did that thousand-tael pawn come from the other day? You have the power to get even the Old Lady's things out. Now, for two hundred taels, you act like this. It's a good thing I didn't tell anyone else.' I thought to myself, the Lady clearly isn't short of money — why does she have to go looking for trouble and making things difficult for people?" Xifeng said: "That day there wasn't a single outsider present — who could have spread this news?" Ping'er thought carefully about who had been there that day. After a while, she laughed and said: "I've got it. When we were speaking that day, there were no outsiders, but in the evening when the things were being delivered, the mother of Big Fool from the Old Lady's side happened to come by to deliver laundry. She sat for a while in the servants' quarters, saw a large trunk of things, and naturally had to ask about it. The young maids probably didn't know better and let it slip — that's quite possible." So she called in several young maids and asked who had told Big Fool's mother. The young maids were terrified — they all knelt down and swore oaths, saying: "We've never dared say a word too much. When anyone asks anything, we always say we don't know. How would we dare say anything about this matter?" Xifeng considered carefully and said: "They wouldn't dare — don't wrong them. For now, let's set this matter aside and deal with the Lady first — that's what's urgent. Better that we go short than invite trouble." She called to Ping'er: "Bring me my gold necklace — pawn it for the time being to get two hundred taels to settle the matter." Jia Lian said: "Why not pawn four hundred? We could use some too." Xifeng said: "No need at all — I have no use for money. Besides, who knows which item we'll have to redeem when the time comes." Ping'er took it and sent someone to fetch Wife Wang'er, who came to collect it. In no time, the silver was brought in. Jia Lian personally delivered it — but no more of that.
Here Xifeng and Pingser could only suspect—they could not identify who had leaked the news. Xifeng said again, "Knowing about this matter is a small thing. What I fear is that petty people will take advantage and spread further gossip, giving rise to other troubles. The most pressing thing is that over there, they've already made an enemy of Yuanyang. Now, hearing that she privately lent things to Second Master Lian, those envious, grasping wretches—they'll find flies to lay eggs in a crackless egg—now that they have this excuse, I wouldn't be surprised if they fabricate some more outrageous slanders. As for your Second Master Lian, it doesn't matter much, but Yuanyang is an upright girl. If she is dragged into this and made to suffer wrongly, wouldn't that be our fault?" Pingser smiled and said, "This needn't worry you. Yuanyang lent the things out of regard for you, not for the Second Master's sake. For one thing, although in name it was a private arrangement, in fact she had already spoken to the Old Ancestress about it. The Old Ancestress, fearing that with so many grandchildren, if this one borrowed and that one asked, and they came coaxing before her, how could she refuse anyone, she simply pretended not to know. Even if it came to light, it would cause no harm in the end." Xifeng said, "The principle is indeed so. But you and I know the truth—how can those who don't know help but harbor suspicions?"
Before she had finished speaking, someone announced: "The Madam has come."
Xifeng was startled. She could not imagine what had brought the Mistress here in person. She and P'ing-erh hurried out to meet her.
They saw Lady Wang's countenance was greatly changed. She had come with only one little personal maid and was not speaking a word. She walked into the inner room and sat down.
Xifeng quickly offered tea and asked with a smile, "What brings Your Ladyship here in such good spirits today?"
Lady Wang ordered sharply: "P'ing-erh, get out!"
P'ing-erh, seeing this, was alarmed and did not know what to do. She answered hastily and led all the little maids out together. She stood outside the door, then thought better of it and closed it. She herself sat on the stone steps and allowed no one at all to enter.
Xifeng too was alarmed and did not know what had happened.
She saw Lady Wang, her eyes brimming with tears, pull a sachet from her sleeve and throw it down. "Look at this," she said.
Xifeng quickly picked it up and saw that it was a "ten-brocade spring-fragrance sachet." She was also greatly startled and asked hastily, "Where did Your Ladyship get this?"
When Lady Wang heard the question, her tears fell even more profusely. She said with a trembling voice, "Where did I get it! I sit at the bottom of a well every day. I took you for a careful person, so I stole a little leisure. Who would have thought you are just like me? Such a thing was lying in broad daylight on a rockery in the garden, and was picked up by the old lady's maid. If your mother-in-law hadn't come across it, it would have been sent to the old lady long ago. Let me ask you—how did this thing come to be left there?"
Xifeng, hearing this, also changed color and asked hastily, "How does Your Ladyship know it is mine?"
Lady Wang, weeping and sighing, said, "You ask me! Think—in this whole family, apart from you young husbands and wives, what would the old women want with such a thing? And where would the young girls get it? Naturally it was brought by that good-for-nothing Lian. You two are on such good terms. You treat it as a plaything. Young people have their private thoughts in the bedchamber—that is only natural. And yet you try to deny it to me! Fortunately the people in the garden are still innocent and haven't found it yet. If one of the maids had found it, and your sisters had seen it—that would be terrible enough. Or if one of the little maids had found it and gone out saying it was picked up in the garden, and people outside had found out—would you still have your life and your reputation?"
When Xifeng heard this, she was both distressed and ashamed. Her face immediately flushed purple. She knelt on both knees by the edge of the kang and also said through tears, "What Your Ladyship says is certainly reasonable, and I would not dare to argue that I have no such thing. But there are still some points I beg Your Ladyship to consider carefully. First, this sachet is embroidered by hired workmen in imitation of the palace style. The cord and tassels are all bought in the market. Even if I were young and careless, I would not want such a wretched thing. Naturally I would only have the finest—that is the first point. Second, such a thing is not carried about constantly. Even if I had one, I would keep it at home. How would I carry it on my person everywhere? Moreover, in the garden, all my cousins and I are on such familiar terms—if it had been exposed, not only before my cousins, but even if a servant had seen it, what would I have looked like? Even if I am young and careless, I could not be so foolish. Third, among the young mistresses, I am a young daughter-in-law. But counting the servants, there are many younger than I. Moreover, they also often go into the garden and return to their homes in the evening. How can we know it is not on one of them? Fourth, besides me, who am often in the garden, the other Mistress also brings several young concubins here—people like Yanhong and Cuiyun, all young concubines. They are even more likely to have such a thing. And then there is Madam Zhen on the other side. She is not especially formal either. She often brings people like Peifeng here. How can we know it is not one of theirs? Fifth, there are too many maids in the garden. Can we guarantee that every one of them is proper? There are some who are older and have learned about such matters. Perhaps at some moment when no one is watching, they slip out, or find some excuse to flirt with the young gatekeepers at the second gate and get such a thing from outside—that is also possible. Now not only have I done nothing of the sort, but even P'ing-erh I can vouch for. I beg Your Ladyship to think carefully."
Lady Wang, hearing this speech, found it very reasonable. She sighed and said, "Get up. I know you come from a great family and could not be so frivolous. But I was so angry that I used these words to provoke you. But what are we to do now? Your mother-in-law had someone seal this up and send it to me to look at. She said it had been obtained from Big Fool the other day. It nearly killed me with anger."
Xifeng said, "Your Ladyship, please don't be angry. If the others find out, we cannot guarantee that the old lady won't hear of it. Let us be calm and investigate secretly—then we will get the truth. Even if we cannot find out, no one outside will know. This is called 'a broken arm hidden in the sleeve.' Now we can take advantage of the gambling incident, when many people have been dismissed, to place the wives of Zhou Rui, Wang'er, and four or five other trusted people who cannot spread tales in the garden, using the investigation of gambling as a pretext. Moreover, the maids now are too many. We cannot guarantee that as they grow bolder, they won't cause trouble. If something happens, it will be too late for regrets. Now if we dismiss them without cause, not only will the young ladies be distressed and unhappy, but both Your Ladyship and I will be in the wrong. It would be better to take this opportunity and in the future, when any who are older or difficult and troublesome are found at fault, send them out to be married off. First, this guarantees that nothing else will happen. Second, it also saves some expense. What does Your Ladyship think of this idea?"
Lady Lady Wang sighed and said, "What you say is certainly true. But thinking carefully from a broader perspective, your cousins are also very pitiable. Not to speak of distant comparisons—just consider your Cousin Lin's mother. Before she was married, how pampered she was, how honored and precious—"
"That is what befits the dignity of a young lady of rank. As for these sisters of today, they are but slightly better than other people's serving-girls at best. Each of them has only two or three maids who look presentable; the rest, even if they number four or five little maids, are no better than imps from a temple. And now you would have me reduce even these? Not only would that be more than my heart could bear, but I doubt the Old Lady would consent either. Our situation may be straitened, but it has not come to such a pass. Though I have not enjoyed great glory and luxury, I am better off than you. Now I would rather economize elsewhere than have these girls slighted. If there is to be frugality, let it begin with me—that would be the proper way. For now, send someone to summon Madam Zhou Rui and the others. I will instruct them at once to investigate the matter quietly and expeditiously." Xifeng thereupon summoned Ping'er and gave the orders.
Before long, the five duenna-companions—Zhou Rui's wife, Wu Xing's wife, Zheng Hua's wife, Lai Wang's wife, and Lai Xi's wife—presented themselves. The others were all in the South, each attending to her duties. Lady Wang was just lamenting that too few hands were available to conduct the search when Wang Shanbao's wife, Lady Xing's duenna-companion, appeared—it was she who had brought the sachet just now. Lady Wang had always regarded Lady Xing's trusted confidantes without the slightest suspicion, and seeing her come to inquire about the matter with such concern, she said to her, "Go and report to your mistress, but also go into the Garden and keep an eye on things. You would be more effective than the others."
Now this Wang Shanbao's wife had long been aggrieved that the maids in the Garden had not shown her much deference whenever she visited, and she had been nursing a grievance without finding any pretext to settle scores. The incident with the sachet had come as a godsend, giving her a handle against them. Hearing Lady Wang entrust her with this task struck the very chord in her heart. "This is easy," she said. "It is not for a servant to speak out of turn, but in principle this matter should have been dealt with strictly long ago. Your Ladyship does not often go into the Garden, and those girls behave as if they had received imperial patents of nobility. They have turned themselves into young ladies of rank. Even if they stirred up a tempest, who would dare utter a word of protest? What is more, they incite their mistresses' maids, claiming that the young ladies are being wronged—who could bear the responsibility for that?"
Lady Wang replied, "There is some truth in what you say. The maids who attend the young ladies are naturally more pampered than the rest. You should advise them accordingly. Even a master's daughter, if left unguided, may prove unruly—how much more so these girls."
Wang Shanbao's wife said, "The others are passable, but there is one Your Ladyship may not know about—Qingwen, in Baoyu's quarters. That maid relies on her face, which is more fetching than other people's, and she has a clever tongue. Every day she dresses herself up like Xishi, and she is sharp-tongued and forward in company, always wanting to outdo others. If a single word displeases her, she will fix her two brazen eyes on you and curse you, mincing and coquettish—utterly wanting in all propriety."
At these words, a memory from the past was suddenly stirred in Lady Wang's mind. She turned to Xifeng and said, "The last time we accompanied the Old Lady on a stroll through the Garden, there was a girl with a slender waist like a water-snake, narrow shoulders, and features that somewhat resembled your Cousin Dai, who was scolding a little maid. I was much offended by her insolent airs, but as I was walking with the Old Lady I said nothing at the time. Afterwards I meant to ask who she was, but I happened to forget. Now that you mention it, that maid must be she."
Xifeng replied, "As for all those maids, taken as a whole, none is as handsome as Qingwen. In her speech and bearing, there is indeed something of a frivolous nature. What Your Ladyship described sounds very much like her. But I have forgotten the incident of that day as well, and would not presume to say for certain."
Wang Shanbao's wife interjected, "There is no need for all this. It would be simple enough to summon her here now for Your Ladyship to have a look."
Lady Wang said, "The only ones from Baoyu's quarters who often come to see me are Xiren and Sheyue—those two are simple and honest, and that is good. If this girl were like that, she would never dare come into my presence. All my life I have detested such people. And now, with this incident having come to light—if our precious Baoyu were to be led astray by this creature, what then?" She summoned her own maid and instructed her to go to the Garden. "Tell them that I have some questions for them. Let Xiren and Sheyue remain to attend to Baoyu and not come. There is one Qingwen, the cleverest of all—summon her here at once. You are not to say anything to her."
The little maid assented and walked into Happy Red Court, where it happened that Skye-Blue was feeling unwell. She had just woken from her afternoon nap and was in low spirits, but on hearing what was said, she had no choice but to follow along.
Ordinarily, all these maids knew that Lady Wang most detested those who dressed in a dainished manner and spoke with a frivolous air; hence Skye-Blue never put herself forward. Now, having been feeling unwell these past days, she had not bothered with much adornment at all, and told herself there would be no harm in it. But when she arrived in Phoenix's chamber, Lady Wang took one look at her — hairpins askew, tresses loose, jacket hanging slack, sash slipping undone — with that lingering air of Yang Guifei cradling her heart in languor, and her face and bearing were exactly those of the person from the previous month. In an instant, the old flame was rekindled within her.
Lady Wang was by nature a straightforward, artless woman whose joys and angers came straight from the heart, unlike those who cloak their thoughts behind careful words. Now that genuine fury had seized her breast and old grievances came rushing back, she said with a cold smile: "What a beauty! You truly look like a sick Xishi. Who is it you put on these wanton airs for every day? What you've been up to — don't think I don't know! I'll let you be for now, but come tomorrow I'll have your skin off! Is Baoyu any better today?"
Skye-Blue, hearing these words, was greatly startled and knew at once that someone had secretly wronged her. Though inwardly furious, she dared not utter a sound. She was by nature a woman of surpassing sharpness. When asked whether Baoyu was any better, she refused to answer truthfully and said only: "I don't often go to Baoyu's rooms, and I'm not with him much. Whether he's well or not, I can't say — you'd have to ask Xiren and Sheyue."
Lady Wang said: "You deserve a slap for that mouth! Are you a corpse, or what use are you?!"
Skye-Blue said: "I was originally one of the Old Lady's people. The Old Lady said the garden was empty and too quiet and that Baoyu was frightened, so she sent me to keep watch in the outer room at night — just to look after the place. I told her honestly that I was clumsy and couldn't wait on anyone. The Old Lady scolded me and said, 'I'm not asking you to manage his affairs — what use is a clever one for that?' Only after hearing that did I go. Every ten days or half a month, when Baoyu is bored, everyone plays together for a while and then disperses. As for Baoyu's meals and daily routine, above him there are old nannies and old mothers, and below him there are Xiren, Sheyue, Autumn-Weave and the others. In my spare time I still have needlework to do for the Old Lady's rooms, so I haven't paid attention to Baoyu's affairs. Since you find fault with me, from now on I shall pay attention."
Lady Wang believed her and said hastily: "Ami-Tofo! That you don't go near Baoyu is a blessing for me — I shan't trouble you to take any pains. But since you were given to Baoyu by the Old Lady, tomorrow I shall report it to the Old Lady and send you away."
Then she turned to Wang Shanbao's wife and said: "Go in and keep a close eye on her these next few days. Don't let her sleep in Baoyu's rooms. When I have reported to the Old Lady, I shall deal with her."
She barked: "Get out! Standing here — I can't bear the sight of your shameless manner! Who gave you leave to dress up in all that garish finery!"
Skye-Blue had no choice but to leave. This indignity was no small matter. The moment she stepped through the door, she pressed her handkerchief to her face and walked on, weeping as she went, all the way to the garden gate.
Here Lady Wang said to Xifeng and the others, reproaching herself: "These past years my energy has been increasingly short, and I haven't been able to attend to everything. I never even noticed such a demonic creature. I'm afraid there may be more like this—tomorrow I must have a thorough investigation." Xifeng, seeing Lady Wang in the grip of anger, and knowing that Wang Shanbao's wife was Lady Xing's spy who constantly incited Lady Xing to make trouble, dared not say a word in response, no matter how many arguments she might have had, and merely kept her head lowered and assented. Wang Shanbao's wife said: "Your Ladyship should take care of your health—that's what matters. Leave these small matters to your servant. Now, investigating this sort of person is extremely easy. Wait until the evening when the garden gates are locked and no one can pass in or out, then we'll take them by surprise and lead people to search the rooms of all the maids. If someone has this sort of thing, they certainly won't have only this—there will naturally be other things as well. When we turn up other items, then this one will naturally be proven to belong to them too." Lady Wang said: "That's true. If we don't do this, we'll never be able to distinguish the guilty from the innocent." She then asked Xifeng what she thought. Xifeng had no choice but to reply: "What Your Ladyship says is right—let's do it then." Lady Wang said: "This is a good plan. Otherwise, we couldn't find out even in a year." And so they reached their decision together. After dinner, when the Dowager had retired for the night and Baochai and the others had entered the garden, Wang Shanbao's wife asked Xifeng to go into the garden with her. She ordered that all the side gates be locked, and they began the search with the women who kept night watch, though all they found was some surplus candles, lamp oil, and the like that had been hoarded. Wang Shanbao's wife said: "This is also stolen goods—don't touch it. Wait until tomorrow to report to Your Ladyship before moving it." Then they went first to Happy Red Court and ordered the gate shut. At that moment, Baoyu was already feeling uneasy about Qingwen, when suddenly he saw this group of people arrive and, not knowing why, head straight for the maids' rooms. He came out to meet Xifeng and asked what was the matter. Xifeng said: "Something important has been lost. Since everyone denies it, we're afraid one of the maids may have stolen it, so we're searching everyone to clear the suspicion." As she spoke, she sat down to drink tea. Wang Shanbao's wife and the others searched for a while, then carefully asked whose trunks these were, and had each person come to open them personally. Xiren, seeing how Qingwen was and knowing something unusual must have happened, and seeing this search taking place, had no choice but to come out first and open her trunk and boxes herself, letting them search everything—but there was nothing but ordinary personal belongings. They moved on to search the others, going through them one by one in order. When they came to Qingwen's trunk, they asked: "Whose is this? Why hasn't it been opened for searching?" Xiren and the others were just about to open it for Qingwen when they saw Qingwen come bursting in with her hair hanging loose, flip open the trunk with a crash, grab it by the bottom, and turn it upside down, dumping everything out onto the floor. Wang Shanbao's wife felt rather embarrassed; she looked over the contents and found nothing improper. She reported to Xifeng and wanted to go elsewhere. Xifeng said: "Search carefully. If you can't find anything this time, it will be hard to answer for it." Everyone said: "We've gone through everything thoroughly—there's nothing out of order. Though there are a few men's things, they're all small items belonging to a child, probably Baoyu's old possessions—nothing to worry about." Xifeng laughed and said: "In that case, let's go and look elsewhere."
As they came out, she said to Wang Shanbao's wife: "I have a thought, though I don't know if it's right. If we're searching, we should only search our own people. In Miss Xue's room, we absolutely cannot conduct a search." Wang Shanbao's wife smiled and said: "Of course. How could we search a relative's quarters?" Xifeng nodded and said: "That's what I thought too." As she spoke, they arrived at Bamboo Lodge. Daiyu had already gone to bed when she was suddenly told these people had arrived, not knowing what it was about. She was just about to get up when Xifeng came in, quickly pressed her down not to rise, and said: "Go back to sleep—we'll be leaving shortly." For the moment they chatted casually. Meanwhile, Wang Shanbao's wife led the others to the maids' rooms and searched through trunks and boxes one by one. From Zijuan's room they found two of Baoyu's talismans that he had worn at birth and later taken off, a sash from a belt, two pouches, and fan cases with fans inside. When they opened them, they turned out to be things Baoyu had carried in previous years. Wang Shanbao's wife thought she had scored a success and hurriedly asked Xifeng to come and examine them, saying: "Where did these things come from?" Xifeng smiled and said: "Baoyu and they have been together since they were small children—these are naturally Baoyu's old things. This isn't anything unusual. Put them aside and move on to other places—that's the proper thing to do." Zijuan smiled and said: "Even now, we can't sort out whose things belong to whom between the two households. If you ask about any one of these, even I've forgotten which year or month it appeared." Wang Shanbao's wife, hearing Xifeng speak this way, had no choice but to let the matter drop.
When they arrived at Tanchun's courtyard, someone had already informed Tanchun. Tanchun had surmised there must be some reason for this, which had led to such an ugly display, so she ordered all her maids to light candles and open the door to await them. When the company arrived, Tanchun purposely asked what the matter was. Xifeng laughed and said, "Because something has been lost, and for days we have been unable to find who took it, I feared others would accuse these girls, so I thought it best to search everyone, to clear their names—it would be a good way to wash them clean."
Tanchun said with a cold laugh, "So our maids are all thieves, and I am the chief receiver. In that case, search my trunks and cabinets first—everything they have stolen has been handed over to me for safekeeping." As she spoke, she ordered her maids to open all her trunks and cabinets, and to open the mirror stand, dressing cases, bedding bundles, and clothing parcels, large and small, inviting Xifeng to inspect them.
Xifeng said with a placating smile, "I am merely carrying out the Mistress's orders. Sister, do not misjudge me. Why be so angry?" She ordered her maids to quickly close everything. Ping'er and Feng'er hurriedly helped Shushu close and put things away.
Tanchun said, "I would permit you to search my things, but you shall not search my maids. I am more malicious than anyone else—I know everything my maids possess, and I keep it all here, every needle and thread they have, they cannot hide anything. If you want to search, search only me. If you are not satisfied, go back to the Mistress and tell her I defied her orders and ask how she wishes to punish me—I will submit to whatever she decides. Do not be in such a hurry—a day will come when you yourselves will be searched! You did not discuss the Zhen family this morning, yet you were already ransacking your own home, and today it has truly happened. We too are gradually approaching that end. You must know that for a great family like ours, if attacked from outside, it cannot be destroyed all at once—as the ancients said, 'A centipede, though dead, does not stiffen.' It must first begin to destroy itself from within before it can be utterly ruined!" As she spoke, tears fell involuntarily.
Xifeng merely looked at the other women. Zhou Ruida's wife then said, "Since all the girls' things are here, madam, please go elsewhere and let the young lady rest in peace." Xifeng rose to take her leave.
Tanchun said, "Have you searched thoroughly? If you come again tomorrow, I will not permit it."
Xifeng laughed and said, "Since everything belonging to the maids is here, there is no need to search further."
Tanchun said with a cold laugh, "You are indeed clever. You have already opened my bundles and yet claim you have not searched. Tomorrow you dare say I protected my maids and would not let you search them. You had best make it clear now—if you wish to search again, by all means do so once more."
Xifeng knew that Tanchun had always been different from the rest, so she could only say with a placating smile, "I have already searched everything belonging to you."
Tanchun then asked the others, "Have you all searched thoroughly as well?" Zhou Ruida's wife and the others all said with placating smiles, "We have all searched thoroughly."
Now Wang Shanbao's wife was a person of no judgment. She had heard of Tanchun before, but only because the others lacked perception and courage—how could a young lady act this way, and moreover one who was born of a concubine? What could she dare to do? She prided herself on being Lady Xing's dowry woman, and even Lady Wang treated her with special regard, let alone others. Now seeing Tanchun behave thus, she assumed Tanchun was truly angry only at Xifeng and had nothing to do with them. She wished to seize the moment to show off and curry favor, so she stepped forward, pulled at Tanchun's skirt, deliberately flipped it, and said with a smirk, "Even the young lady's person I have searched—indeed there is nothing."
Xifeng, seeing this, quickly said, "Mother, let's go. Don't be so wild and foolish."
Before she had finished speaking, there was a loud slap, and Wang's wife received a resounding blow across the face from Tanchun. Tanchun flew into a rage and, pointing at Wang's wife, demanded, "What sort of creature are you, to dare pull at my clothes! It is only because of the Mistress's regard, and because you are old, that I call you 'Mother,' and you take advantage of your master's power to make trouble every day and stir up strife. Now you have gone even further. You imagine that I am like your young lady, good-natured enough to let you bully her—you have miscalculated! I am not angry that you searched my things, but you should not have made a mockery of me." As she spoke, she personally loosened her clothing and skirts and pulled Xifeng over to search her carefully. She added, "Better than letting a slave search my person."
Xifeng and Ping'er hurriedly helped Tanchun rearrange her skirts and sleeves, while scolding Wang Shanbao's wife, "Mother, after a couple of cups of wine you become wild and foolish. The other day you even offended the Mistress. Go out quickly—do not mention this again." They also urged Tanchun not to be angry.
Tanchun said with a cold laugh, "If I had any spirit, I would have dashed my head against a wall and died long ago! Otherwise how could I allow a slave to search me as if I were hiding stolen goods? Tomorrow morning, I will first report to the Old Lady and the Mistress, then go to apologize to my aunt. Whatever the punishment, I will accept it myself."
Wang Shanbao's wife had gained nothing but humiliation. Outside the window she muttered, "It's over, it's over—this is the first time I have ever been struck. Tomorrow I will report to the Mistress and go back to my old home. What use is this old life of mine!"
Tanchun ordered her maids, "Do you hear what she says? Must I go and argue with myself?" When Shushu and the others heard this, they went out and said, "If you truly go back to your old home, that would be our good fortune. I am afraid you would be unwilling to go."
Xifeng laughed, "Good maids—truly, like mistress, like servant."
Tanchun said with a cold laugh, "We thieves have a ready tongue. This one is still a fool—behind our backs she would only know how to incite her mistress."
"Zi." P'ing-er hurriedly smiled and tried to smooth things over, while at the same time pulling Dai-shu inside. Mrs. Chou and the others also tried to reason with her. Feng-chieh waited until she had seen T'an-chun settled for the night before taking her people across to Warm Fragrance Bank.
At that time Li Wan was still confined to her bed with illness. As she lived next door to Xichun and was also close to Tanchun, it was convenient to visit these two places first. Since Li Wan had just taken her medicine and fallen asleep, they did not wish to disturb her; they searched only the maids' rooms one by one but found nothing, and so proceeded to Xichun's quarters. As Xichun was young and still naive, she was frightened and did not know what was happening, so ifeng-jie could not help but comfort her. Who would have expected that a large packet of gold and silver ingots—some thirty or forty in all—would be found in Rushua's trunk, along with a set of jade belt plaques and a bundle of men's boots and socks? Rushua's face turned pale. When asked where these had come from, Rushua had no choice but to kneel down and confess tearfully: "These were bestowed by Master Zhen upon my elder brother. Since my parents are in the south and we live with my uncle, and as my uncle and aunt are always drinking and gambling, my brother was afraid that if he handed the gifts over they would be squandered. So whenever he received anything, he would secretly ask an old nanny to bring it in for me to keep." Xichun, being timid, was also frightened by this and said: "I had no idea. This is terrible! Second Sister-in-law, if you must punish him, take him outside to do it—I cannot bear to listen." Feng-jie said with a smile: "If this is true, it might be forgiven, but he should not have had things smuggled in privately. If this can be passed in, what cannot? The fault lies with the person who did the smuggling. But if this is untrue and the things were stolen, then he need not expect to live." Rushua knelt weeping and said: "I dare not lie. You can ask our lady and master tomorrow. If they say these were not bestowed, then beat me and my brother to death—we will have no complaint." Feng-jie said: "Of course we shall ask. But even if they were truly bestowed, there is still fault. Who gave you permission to have things smuggled in? Now tell me who acted as your go-between and I will spare you. But never do this again." Xichun said: "Sister-in-law, you must not forgive him this time. There are many people here. If you do not make an example of someone, the older ones will hear of it and who knows what will happen. If you forgive him, I will not consent." Feng-jie said: "I have always thought him a good person. No one is without fault—this once can be overlooked. But if he offends again, both offences will be punished together. I only wonder who the go-between was." Xichun said: "As for the go-between, there is no one else—it must be Old Mother Zhang at the back gate. She is always sneaking about with these maids, and these maids all look after her." Upon hearing this, Feng-jie ordered the name to be recorded and told Zhou Rui's wife to hold onto the items temporarily until the matter could be clarified the next day. Then she took leave of Xichun and went to Yingchun's quarters.
Yingchun was already asleep, and the maids were just about to retire. It was only after knocking for some time that the door was opened. Feng-jie instructed: "Do not disturb the young lady." She then went to the maids' rooms. As Siquan was Wang Shanbao's granddaughter, Feng-jie wanted to see whether the Wang family might be hiding something, so she paid special attention when they searched her. They began with the other maids' trunks and found nothing unusual. When they came to Siquan's trunk and had searched it, Wang Shanbao's wife said: "There is nothing here." But just as she was about to close the trunk, Zhou Rui's wife said: "Wait—what is this?" She reached in and pulled out a pair of men's brocade-woven socks and a pair of satin shoes. There was also a small bundle; when opened, it contained a "mutual heart" ruyi ornament and a letter, all of which she handed to Feng-jie. As Feng-jie managed the household affairs and often read letters and account books, she could recognize a few characters. She saw that the letter was written on double-happiness red stationery, and it read: "Since your visit home last month, your parents have become aware of our feelings for each other. But as you have not yet left the household, we cannot yet fulfill our wishes. If we can meet in the garden, you may ask Old Mother Zhang to pass me a message. If we could meet once in the garden, we would be able to talk more freely than at home. A thousand times, a thousand times. In addition to the two sachets you bestowed, which I have received, I now send a string of fragrant beads to express my heart. Please keep them safe. Your cousin, Pan You'an, with respects." After reading it, Feng-jie did not grow angry but instead laughed. The others could not read. Wang Shanbao's wife had never known that her niece and this cousin had such a romantic entanglement; seeing the shoes and socks, she had already felt something was amiss, and now seeing the red letter and Feng-jie laughing, she said: "These must be some scribbled accounts that don't even form proper characters, which is why you are laughing, madam." Feng-jie said with a smile: "Indeed, these accounts simply do not add up. You are Siquan's grandmother—her cousin should also bear the surname Wang. So why does he bear the surname Pan?" Wang Shanbao's wife, finding the question odd, reluctantly explained: "Siquan's aunt was married into the Pan family, so her cousin on that side bears the surname Pan. Pan You'an, who ran off last time, is her cousin." Feng-jie said: "So that is it." She then said: "Let me read it to you." She read it aloud from beginning to end, and everyone was shocked. This Wang woman had been bent on catching others in wrongdoing, but had instead caught her own granddaughter, and she was both furious and mortified. Zhou Rui's wife and the others all said to her: "Have you heard, madam? It is perfectly clear—there is nothing more to be said. Now, in your opinion, what should be done?" This Wang woman wished the ground would open and swallow her. Feng-jie only stared at her with a smirk and said to Zhou Rui's wife with a laugh: "This is rather good. You don't have to lift a finger, and he has quietly found you a fine son-in-law—everyone can rest easy." Zhou Rui's wife also laughed along. The Wang woman, having no outlet for her anger, slapped her own face and cursed herself: "Old
"Whores die and still go on committing sins! Talk of the devil and there he appears — retribution before your very eyes." Seeing her like this, the others all laughed without stopping, half teasing and half mocking.
Wang Xifeng noticed that Siqi kept her head down and said nothing, showing neither fear nor shame, which struck her strange. Considering it was already late at night and there was no need to interrogate her just yet, she feared the girl might feel so ashamed that she would seek some foolish end during the night, so she ordered two old women to keep watch over her. Then she took the others, gathered the evidence of the stolen goods, and returned to rest, intending to deal with everything the next day.
But that night she had several more bouts of bleeding, and below the blood flowed without stopping. By the next day, she felt extremely weak in her body and dizzy when she rose, unable to carry on. She called for a physician, who took her pulse and then wrote out a prescription: "It is observed that the young lady's heart qi is insufficient, with deficiency fire invading the spleen. This is all due to damage from worry and overwork, leading to a tendency to lie down and sleep soundly, weakness of the stomach and earth element, and loss of appetite. For now, I will use a formula to raise the yang and nourish the constructive qi." Having written this, he listed several medicinal ingredients — nothing but ginseng, angelica, astragalus, and the like.
The physician withdrew, and some old nursemaids took the prescription to report to Lady Wang, who could not help adding another layer of worry and sorrow, and so the matter of Siqi and the others was set aside for the time being.
As it happened, You-shi had come to visit Feng-jie that day. After sitting for a while, she went to the garden and paid a call on Li Wan. She was just about to go and greet the young ladies when word came that Xi-chun wished to see her, so she went to Xi-chun's quarters instead. Xi-chun told her in detail what had happened the previous night and ordered that all of Ru-hua's things be brought out for You-shi to inspect.
You-shi said, "The truth is your brother gave them to her brother. The only wrong is that she sent them back privately. Now official salt has become private salt." She scolded Ru-hua: "Muddle-headed fool, your heart smeared with grease!"
Xi-chun said, "You people don't discipline your own properly, yet you blame the girl. Among all my sisters, only my maid has brought such shame upon herself—how can I show my face? Yesterday I pressed Sister Feng to take her away, but she refused. I thought: she originally belongs to that side, and Sister Feng has her reasons for not taking her. I was just about to send her over today, and it's perfect timing that you've come, sister-in-law. Take her away quickly. Whether you beat her, kill her, or sell her, I won't concern myself in the least."
When Ru-hua heard this, she knelt down and wept, begging, "I won't dare do it again. I only beg you, miss, to remember our years of companionship from childhood and let us live or die together."
You-shi and the wet nurse and the others also pleaded earnestly on her behalf, saying, "She was just confused for a moment and won't dare do it again. After all, she's served you since childhood—it would be best to keep her."
But Xi-chun, though young, was born with an unyielding, upright, solitary, and eccentric nature. No matter what anyone said, she felt only that her dignity had been compromised, and she clenched her teeth and absolutely refused. What she said was even more pointed: "Not only do I not want Ru-hua—now that I've grown up, it's not even proper for me to visit your side anymore. Besides, I've recently heard rumors that people are gossiping behind our backs about all sorts of unspeakable things. If I go over there, they'll start slandering me too."
You-shi said, "Who's gossiping? And what is there to gossip about? Who are you, and who are you? If you've heard people gossiping about us, you ought to question them."
Xi-chun said coldly, "You ask me that as if it were so easy. I'm an unmarried girl—my business is to avoid trouble, not to go looking for it. What kind of person would I be then? Let me say one more thing: I'm not afraid of offending you, but in the end there's a fair judgment—why bother asking anyone? The ancients said well, 'Good or evil, life or death—even a father and son cannot help each other.' How much less can you and I. I only know how to protect myself—that's enough. I won't concern myself with you. From now on, don't drag me into your affairs."
You-shi had a guilty conscience to begin with and was afraid of such talk. Hearing that people had been gossiping, she was already burning with shame and anger, but she had held herself in check for Xi-chun's sake. Now when Xi-chun said this, she could no longer contain herself and demanded, "How have I dragged you into anything? Your maid did wrong, yet for no reason she blames me—I've put up with it all morning, and you become even more insistent, saying all these things. You're a lady worth a thousand pieces of gold. From now on we won't be close—we wouldn't want to tarnish the lady's good name." She immediately ordered someone to take Ru-hua away, then rose in a huff and left.
Xi-chun said, "If you really don't come anymore, it will save us all the gossip and trouble, and everyone will be better off."
You-shi made no reply and went straight to the front. What happened next—
