Chapter 70
Now Zhang He's army of thirty thousand had been divided into three camps, each situated among the mountain strongholds: one called Dangqu Camp, one called Mengtou Camp, and one called Dangshi Camp. On that day, Zhang He had sent half the troops from each camp to take Baxi, leaving half to guard the camps. A scout soon reported to Baxi that Zhang He was leading his troops in. Zhang Fei hastily summoned Lei Tong to discuss the situation. Lei Tong said, "The terrain of Langzhong is rugged and mountainous—ideal for an ambush. If you, General, lead out troops to engage him, I will come forth with a surprise force to assist, and Zhang He can be captured."
Zhang Fei assigned five thousand elite soldiers to Lei Tong and sent him off. Fei himself led ten thousand troops, advancing thirty li from Langzhong, where they encountered Zhang He's forces. The two armies drew up their lines. Zhang Fei rode out alone, challenging Zhang He to single combat. He leveled his spear and rode out to meet him. They fought for over thirty rounds, when suddenly the rear of Zhang He's army began shouting. They had spotted Shu banners behind the mountain and were thrown into disorder. Zhang He dared not continue fighting and wheeled his horse to retreat. Zhang Fei pressed the pursuit from behind. Ahead, Lei Tong also led his troops in a sudden attack. Attacked from both sides, He's forces were utterly routed. Zhang Fei and Lei Tong pursued them through the night, driving them all the way to Dangqu Mountain. Zhang He still held his three camps, having placed many rolling logs and catapult stones in position, and he defended firmly without giving battle. Zhang Fei made camp ten li from Dangqu and the next day led out troops to challenge him. Zhang He sat atop the mountain, feasting and drinking with great fanfare, and would not come down. Zhang Fei ordered his soldiers to hurl insults, but He still would not come out. Fei had no choice but to return to his camp.
The next day, Lei Tong went to the foot of the mountain to challenge. He again would not come out. Lei Tong drove his soldiers up the mountain, but rolling logs and stones were hurled down upon them. Lei Tong hastily retreated. Soldiers from Dangshi and Mengtou camps sallied forth and routed Lei Tong. The next day, Zhang Fei went to challenge again. Zhang He again would not come out. Fei had his men shower him with every manner of vile abuse, and He shouted insults back from the mountain. Zhang Fei pondered but could devise no plan. For over fifty days they faced each other, and Fei established his main camp before the mountain, drinking wine each day; he would drink himself into a great stupor and sit at the foot of the mountain hurling insults.
Liu Bei sent a man to deliver rewards to the army and found that Zhang Fei was drinking wine all day. The messenger returned and reported this to Liu Bei. Liu Bei was greatly alarmed and went in haste to ask Kongming about it. Kongming smiled and said, "So that is how it is. I feared there might be no good wine at the front; Chengdu has an abundance of fine brews. Have fifty jars loaded onto three carts and sent to the front for General Zhang to drink." Liu Bei said, "My brother has always gotten into trouble through drinking. Why, Master, do you send him wine instead?" Kongming smiled and said, "My lord has been brothers with Yide for many years, yet you still do not know his character? Yide has always been fierce and unyielding, yet when he took Sichuan, he magnamiously released Yan Yan—no mere act of a bold warrior. Now he has been facing Zhang He for over fifty days, and when drunk he sits at the foot of the mountain hurling insults as if no one else existed. This is not mere indulgence in drink—it is a scheme to defeat Zhang He." Liu Bei said, "Even so, we should not be overconfident. Send Wei Yan to assist him." Kongming ordered Wei Yan to carry wine to the front, with each cart flying a yellow banner inscribed in large characters: "Fine Wine for Military Use." Wei Yan received the orders and brought the wine to the camp. He saw Zhang Fei, conveyed the lord's gift of wine, and Fei received it with a bow. He instructed Wei Yan and Lei Tong to each lead a detachment as the left and right wings; they were to advance when the red flag was raised in the camp. He had the wine set out in his tent and ordered his soldiers to drink with drums and banners displayed in full view.
A spy reported this up the mountain, and Zhang He came to the mountaintop to observe. He saw Zhang Fei sitting in his tent drinking wine, ordering two young soldiers to wrestle before him for entertainment. He said, "Zhang Fei insults me beyond all bearing!" He gave orders to raid Fei's camp that very night. He commanded Mengtou and Dangshi camps both to sally forth as flanking support. That night, Zhang He took advantage of the faint moonlight and led his troops down the side of the mountain, going straight to the camp. From a distance he saw Zhang Fei's tent brightly lit with lanterns and candles, Fei drinking wine inside. Zhang He charged forward with a great shout, drums pounding from the mountain to aid him, and plunged straight into the central camp. But there sat Zhang Fei, motionless. He spurred his horse forward and thrust his spear—only to find it was a straw man. He hastily reeled his horse around, when from behind the tent a string of cannon shots rang out. A general blocked his way, his eyes round and blazing, his voice like a great thunderclap—it was Zhang Fei. He leveled his spear, mounted his horse, and charged straight at Zhang He. The two generals fought amid the firelight for thirty to fifty rounds. Zhang He waited for his two camps to come to his rescue, but the relief forces from both camps had already been routed by Wei Yan and Lei Tong, who had seized the two camps in the process. Zhang He saw no reinforcements and was at his wits' end when he saw fires springing up on the mountain—Zhang Fei's rear troops had seized the camp palisades as well. Zhang He had lost all three camps and had no choice but to flee to Waguo Pass. Zhang Fei won a great victory and sent a report to Chengdu. Liu Bei was overjoyed and now understood that Yide's drinking had been a ruse, intended only to lure Zhang He down from the mountain.
Now Zhang He had retreated to Waguo Pass. Of his thirty thousand troops, twenty thousand had already been lost, and he sent a man to Cao Hong to beg for reinforcements. Cao Hong was furious and said: "You would not heed my words, insisted on advancing, lost a vital stronghold, and now come begging for help!" He refused to send troops and instead dispatched a man to urge Zhang He to give battle. He was flustered and had no choice but to devise a plan. He divided his forces into two and set an ambush in the remote hills before the pass, instructing them: "I will feign retreat. Zhang Fei will surely pursue—then you cut off his route of escape."
That day Zhang He led his army forward and encountered Lei Tong. They fought a few bouts before Zhang He feigned retreat, and Lei Tong gave chase. Both armies then emerged and cut off Lei Tong's line of retreat. Zhang He turned back and speared Lei Tong under his horse. The defeated soldiers returned to report to Fei. Fei personally rode out to challenge Zhang He, who again feigned defeat, but Fei did not pursue. Zhang He then returned to the engagement, and after only a few bouts, fled once more. Fei recognized the ruse, recalled his troops back to camp, and consulted with Wei Yan, saying, "Zhang He used an ambush to kill Lei Tong and now tries to trick me as well. Why not turn his own stratagem against him?" Yan asked, "How?" Fei said, "Tomorrow I will lead a vanguard forward first, and you will bring elite troops behind. When the ambush troops emerge, you can divide your forces to strike them. Use over ten carts, each loaded with firewood and straw, to block the narrow path and set them ablaze. I will then seize the opportunity to capture Zhang He and avenge Lei Tong." Wei Yan accepted the plan. The next day, Fei led his troops forward. Zhang He's forces arrived again and engaged Fei. After ten bouts, Zhang He once more feigned defeat. Fei led his cavalry and infantry in pursuit, while Zhang He fought as he retreated, drawing Fei through the mountain pass. Zhang He turned his rear guard into the front, camped again, and engaged Fei once more, hoping that two detachments of ambush troops would emerge to surround Fei. But to his dismay, the ambush forces were met by Wei Yan's elite troops, who drove them into the valley entrance. The carts were positioned to block the mountain road and set ablaze. The fire spread through the grass and trees of the valley, and the smoke obscured the paths, so the soldiers could not escape. Fei pressed his attack relentlessly, and Zhang He was utterly routed. Fighting for his life, he cut his way through and fled to Wankou Pass, where he gathered his remaining troops and held fast behind the walls, refusing to come out.
Fei and Wei Yan attacked the pass day after day but could not take it. Seeing that his efforts were in vain, Fei withdrew his army twenty li and went with Wei Yan and several dozen riders to scout the surrounding mountain paths. Suddenly they saw several men and women, each carrying small packs, climbing over vines and brambles along a remote mountain trail. Fei pointed at them from horseback with his whip and said to Wei Yan, "The capture of Wankou Pass depends on these few commoners." He ordered his soldiers, "Do not frighten them. Bring those people here gently." The soldiers quickly escorted them before Fei's horse. Fei spoke reassuringly to put them at ease and asked where they had come from. The commoners replied, "We are all residents of Hanzhong, and now wish to return home. We heard that the great armies are fighting and that the main road through Langzhong has been blocked. Now we are passing through Cangxi and entering Hanzhong via the Zitong Mountains and the Huichuan Valley to return home." Fei asked, "How far is Wankou Pass by this road?" The commoners said, "The path through the Zitong Mountains leads to the rear of Wankou Pass." Fei was overjoyed. He brought the commoners into the camp, gave them food and wine, and instructed Wei Yan to attack the front of the pass, saying, "I myself will lead a light cavalry force through the Zitong Mountains to attack the rear of the pass." He had the commoners guide the way and selected five hundred light cavalry to advance along the narrow path.
Now Zhang He, distressed that reinforcements had not arrived, was brooding when a report came: "Wei Yan is attacking below the pass." Zhang He donned his armor and mounted his horse, preparing to descend, when suddenly another report came: "Five or six columns of fire have been raised behind the pass. It is unknown where the troops came from." Zhang He personally led his men to meet them. As the banners parted, he saw Zhang Fei at once. Zhang He was greatly alarmed and hastened to flee along the narrow path, but his horse could not manage the terrain. With Zhang Fei pursuing closely behind, Zhang He abandoned his horse and fled up the mountain, finding a path by which he barely escaped. Only a dozen or so men accompanied him on foot as they made their way to Nanzheng, where they saw Cao Hong. Hong saw that Zhang He had only a handful of men left and flew into a rage, saying, "I told you not to go, but you insisted on going and even submitted a written pledge! Today you have lost the entire army—why not kill yourself? What business do you have coming here?" He ordered his attendants to drag Zhang He out and execute him. The army adjutant, Guo Huai, remonstrated, saying, "'It is easy to obtain an army but hard to find a general.' Though Zhang He is guilty, he is deeply valued by the Prince of Wei and must not be summarily executed. Give him another five thousand men to take Jimeng Pass directly, which will draw the enemy's forces from every quarter and secure Hanzhong. If he does not succeed, punish him for both offenses." Cao Hong agreed and gave Zhang He another five thousand soldiers, ordering him to take Jimeng Pass. Zhang He received the command and set out.
Now the commanders of Jimeng Pass, Meng Da and Huo Jun, learned of Zhang He's approach. Huo Jun wished only to hold the defenses, but Meng Da insisted on going out to meet the enemy. He led his troops down from the pass to engage Zhang He and was badly defeated. Huo Jun hastily sent a dispatch to Chengdu. When Xuande heard of it, he summoned his military advisors to discuss the matter. Kongming gathered the generals in the hall and asked, "Jimeng Pass is in urgent peril. We must recall Yide from Langzhong to repel Zhang He." Fa Zheng said, "Yide's forces are now stationed at Wankou, guarding Langzhong, which is also a vital position and cannot not be withdrawn. Among the generals in this tent, select one to defeat Zhang He." Kongming smiled and said, "Zhang He is a famous general of Wei and no ordinary opponent. Unless it is Yide, no one can match him." Suddenly a voice rang out fiercely from among the assembly: "Why does the military advisor hold us all in such contempt? Though I am no great talent, I wish to cut off Zhang He's head and present it beneath your banner."
All eyes turned to see that it was the veteran general Huang Zhong. Kongming said, "Though Hangsheng is brave, I fear his age may make him no match for Zhang He." Upon hearing this, Hangsheng's white whiskers bristled as he declared, "Though I am old, my arms can still draw a three-hundred-catty bow, and my body still possesses the strength of a thousand catties. How could I be insufficient to face the likes of Zhang He?" Kongming said, "The general is nearly seventy years old. How is that not old?" Hangsheng strode down from the hall, took a great blade from the rack, and brandished it as swiftly as the wind. He then seized a powerful bow from the wall and snapped two of them in succession. Kongming said, "If the general wishes to go, who shall be his lieutenant?" Hangsheng said, "The veteran general Yan Yan can accompany me. But should anything go wrong, I offer up this white head first." Xuande was greatly pleased and immediately ordered Yan Yan and Huang Zhong to engage Zhang He. Zhao Yun remonstrated, saying, "Zhang He is personally attacking Jimeng Pass. The military advisor must not treat this as a game. If Jimeng Pass is lost, Yizhou is in peril. Why entrust such a great enemy to two old generals?" Kongming said, "You believe that because the two are elderly, they cannot accomplish the matter. I predict that Hanzhong will be won by these two men's hands." Zhao Yun and the others withdrew, each scoffing among themselves.
Now Huang Zhong and Yan Yan arrived at the pass. Meng Da and Huo Jun were inwardly amused, thinking Kongming had misjudged the deployment: "For such a critical position, he sends only two old men!" Huang Zhong said to Yan Yan, "Did you notice how the others reacted? They laugh at us for our age. Let us now perform a remarkable feat to win their respect." Yan Yan replied, "I am ready to follow your orders." The two laid their plans. Huang Zhong then led his troops down from the pass and arrayed them against Zhang He. Zhang He rode forth and, seeing Huang Zhong, laughed and said, "At such an advanced age, have you no shame? You still wish to fight?" Huang Zhong was enraged. "You insolent boy, you mock my age! But the precious blade in my hand is not old!" He spurred his horse forward and engaged Zhang He in combat. The two horses crossed, and after some twenty exchanges, suddenly shouts rose from behind. It was Yan Yan, who had taken a side road and struck the rear of Zhang He's army. Attacked from both sides, Zhang He was utterly defeated. He retreated through the night, his forces falling back some eighty or ninety *li*. Huang Zhong and Yan Yan withdrew into their camp and both held their troops in check.
When Cao Hong learned that Zhang He had lost a battle, he wished to punish him. Guo Huai said, "Zhang He has been hard-pressed and may well defect to Western Shu. We should send generals to aid him and keep a close watch, so that he entertains no disloyal thoughts." Cao Hong agreed and at once dispatched Xiahou Shang, the nephew of Xiahou Dun, and Han Hao, the brother of the surrendered general Han Xuan, with five thousand troops to reinforce the battle. The two generals set out immediately and came to Zhang He's camp, where they inquired about the situation. Zhang He said, "The veteran Huang Zhong is a truly formidable warrior, and with Yan Yan assisting him, he must not be taken lightly." Han Hao said, "I know well how dangerous this old villain is from my time in Changsha. He and Yan Yan surrendered the city and slew my elder brother. Now that we meet, I must avenge him." He and Xiahou Shang then led their fresh troops forward from the camp.
Now Huang Zhong had been scouting the area for days and knew the terrain well. Yan Yan said, "Ahead lies a mountain called Tian-dang Mountain. It is where Cao Cao stores his grain and fodder. If we can seize that place and cut off his supplies, Hanzhong will be ours." Huang Zhong said, "Your words match my own thoughts. Let us do thus and so." Yan Yan followed the plan and took a detachment of troops and departed.
Meanwhile, Huang Zhong learned that Xiahou Shang and Han Hao were approaching, so he led his army out of camp. Han Hao rode to the front of the battle line and cursed Huang Zhong: "Treacherous old villain!" He spurred his horse and leveled his spear, charging at Huang Zhong. Xiahou Shang came out to attack from the flank. Huang Zhong fought both generals, engaging each for over ten exchanges, then feigned retreat. The two pursued him more than twenty *li* and seized Huang Zhong's camp. Huang Zhong hastily established a new camp. The next day, Xiahou Shang and Han Hao came in pursuit; Huang Zhong again rode out to meet them, fought a few exchanges, then retreated once more. The two pursued him another twenty *li* and took his camp, summoning Zhang He to guard the rear camp. Zhang He came to the front camp and remonstrated: "Huang Zhong has retreated for two days in succession—there must be some stratagem behind this." Xiahou Shang rebuked Zhang He: "You are so timid—no wonder you have been defeated again and again! Say no more. Watch the two of us win glory!" Zhang He withdrew, ashamed.
The next day, the two generals fought again, and Huang Zhong retreated another twenty *li*; they pursued him steadily. The following day, when the two advanced their troops, Huang Zhong fled at the mere sight of them, losing several battles in succession, retreating all the way back to the pass. The two generals encamped below the pass and laid siege, but Huang Zhong defended stubbornly and would not come out. Meng Da secretly sent a letter to report to Xuande: "Huang Zhong has lost several battles and has now retreated to the pass." Xuande was alarmed and questioned Kongming. Kongming replied, "This is the old general's stratagem of lulling the enemy into overconfidence." Zhao Yun and the others were skeptical. Xuande dispatched Liu Feng to the pass to reinforce Huang Zhong. When Huang Zhong met Liu Feng, he asked, "What is the young general's purpose in coming to aid the battle?" Liu Feng said, "My father learned that the general had suffered several defeats, so he sent me." Huang Zhong smiled and said, "This is this old man's stratagem of lulling the enemy. Watch tonight's battle—I shall recover all our camps and seize their grain and horses. I merely lent them the camps to store their supplies for us tonight. Leave Huo Jun to guard the pass tonight. General Meng, you and I will carry off the grain and seize the horses. Young general, watch me break the enemy."
That night, at the second watch, Huang Zhong led five thousand troops straight down through the pass. Now Xiahou Shang and Han Hao, seeing that no one had come out of the pass for days, had grown completely slack. Huang Zhong broke into their camp and charged straight through—the soldiers had no time to don armor, the horses no time to be saddled. The two generals each fled for their lives, and the soldiers and horses trampled one another, countless dead. By dawn, Huang Zhong had seized three camps in succession. The camps were strewn with abandoned weapons and saddled horses, all of which he ordered Meng Da to haul back into the pass. Huang Zhong pressed his army forward in pursuit. Liu Feng said, "The troops are exhausted—we should rest a while." Huang Zhong replied, "If you do not enter the tiger's den, how can you seize the tiger's cub?" He spurred his horse ahead, and the soldiers strove onward with all their might. Zhang He's troops were thrown into disarray by their own routed soldiers, could not hold their positions, and fell back, abandoning many stockades and breastworks, all the way to the banks of the Han River.
Zhang He found Xiahou Shang and Han Hao. They took counsel together and said, "This Tian-dang Mountain is where the grain and fodder are stored. Beyond it lies Mi-cang Mountain, also a store of grain—it is the lifeline of the Hanzhong army. If we lose it, we lose Hanzhong. We must devise a way to protect it." Xiahou Shang said, "Mi-cang Mountain is defended by a detachment under my uncle Xiahou Yuan, and it connects directly with Ding-jun Mountain, so there is no cause for worry. Tian-dang Mountain is guarded by my elder brother Xiahou De. We should go join him and defend this mountain together."
Then Zhang He and the two generals marched through the night to Tiandang Mountain, where they met Xiahou De and recounted all that had happened. Xiahou De said, "I have a hundred thousand troops stationed here. You may lead them and recapture your former camp." Zhang He replied, "We should hold fast and not act rashly."
Suddenly the sound of gongs and drums thundered from before the mountain. A messenger reported, "Huang Zhong's forces have arrived." Xiahou De laughed and said, "This old fool understands nothing of military strategy—he relies on courage alone!" Zhang He said, "Huang Zhong is a man of strategy, not mere courage." Xiahou De replied, "The Shu soldiers have marched far and are exhausted after days of travel. Moreover, they have advanced deep into enemy territory—this shows a lack of strategy." Zhang He said, "Still, we must not underestimate the enemy. We should hold fast." Han Hao said, "Give me three thousand elite troops and I will strike them—we cannot fail."
Xiahou De then divided his forces and sent Han Hao down the mountain. Huang Zhong arrayed his troops to meet them. Liu Feng remonstrated, "The sun has already set. The army has marched far and is weary—we should rest for now." Huang Zhong smiled and said, "No—Heaven has bestowed upon us a chance for a brilliant victory. To refuse it would be to defy Heaven." With that, he ordered a great advance amid shouting and drumming. Han Hao led his troops into battle. Huang Zhong raised his blade and charged straight at Han Hao; in a single encounter, he cut Han Hao down from his horse. The Shu soldiers roared and charged up the mountain. Zhang He and Xiahou Shang hurriedly led their forces to meet them. Suddenly a great shout arose from behind the mountain, and flames shot into the sky, turning everything red above and below. Xiahou De was leading troops to fight the fire when he encountered the veteran general Yan Yan, who raised his blade and cut Xiahou De down from his horse. It turned out that Huang Zhong had previously sent Yan Yan with troops to lie in ambush in a secluded part of the mountain. When Huang Zhong's army arrived, Yan Yan set fire to the piles of firewood, and the flames soared, illuminating the entire valley.
Having slain Xiahou De, Yan Yan charged from behind the mountain. Zhang He and Xiahou Shang, unable to aid each other from front and rear, were forced to abandon Tiandang Mountain and flee to Dingjun Mountain to seek refuge with Xiahou Yuan. Huang Zhong and Yan Yan held Tiandang Mountain, and news of the victory was swiftly sent to Chengdu. When Liu Bei heard of it, his generals all rejoiced. Fa Zheng said, "When Cao Cao formerly defeated Zhang Lu and secured Hanzhong, he did not use that momentum to seize Ba and Shu. Instead he left Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He with two generals to garrison the region and led his own army back north—this was a miscalculation. Now Zhang He has just been defeated and Tiandang has fallen. If Your Lordship takes advantage of this moment and leads a great army in person to campaign, Hanzhong can be secured. Once Hanzhong is secured, we can then train troops and accumulate grain, watch for weaknesses and wait for opportunities—advancing we can punish the traitors, retreating we can defend ourselves. This is an opportunity Heaven bestows; it must not be lost." Liu Bei and Kongming both deeply agreed. They issued orders for Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei to serve as vanguard. Liu Bei and Kongming personally led a hundred thousand troops, choosing an auspicious day to advance on Hanzhong. Orders were sent everywhere to strengthen defenses.
It was the twenty-third year of the Jian'an era, an auspicious day in the seventh month of autumn. Liu Bei's army marched out of Jiameng Pass and made camp. He summoned Huang Zhong and Yan Yan to his tent and rewarded them generously. Liu Bei said, "Everyone says you are old, but only the Military Adviser recognized your ability. Now you have indeed achieved a brilliant feat. But Dingjun Mountain in Hanzhong is the bulwark of Nanzheng and the place where grain is stored. If we take Dingjun Mountain, the road to Yangping will cause us no concern. Do you dare to take Dingjun Mountain?" Huang Zhong answered with fervor and was about to lead his troops. Kongming urgently stopped him, saying, "Though you are valiant, General, Xiahou Yuan is not to be compared with Zhang He. Yuan is deeply versed in military strategy and understands the mechanics of warfare. Cao Cao relies on him as a shield for the Xiliang region—he once garrisoned Chang'an to resist Ma Chao, and now he garrisons Hanzhong. Cao Cao entrusts no one else with this but Yuan alone, because Yuan possesses the talent of a general. Although you have defeated Zhang He, it is uncertain whether you can defeat Xiahou Yuan. I wish to send someone to Jingzhou to replace General Guan so that he may come and face him."
Huang Zhong answered with indignation, "In former times, Lian Po at the age of eighty still ate a bushel of rice and ten pounds of meat. The feudal lords feared his courage and dared not violate Zhao's borders. How much more so for Huang Zhong, who is not yet seventy! The Military Adviser says I am old, but I will use no subordinate general—I will take only my three thousand troops and present Xiahou Yuan's head beneath your command." Kongming again and again refused to allow it. Huang Zhong insisted on going. Kongming said, "Since you insist on going, shall I send a supervisor to accompany you?"
Indeed:
One must employ the rousing method to send the old to war—
Youth cannot match the aged warrior.
Who this person was will be revealed in the next chapter.
