**Chapter 71: A Malicious Heart Breeds Malice; The Unwilling Maid Meets Her Mate**
After Jia Zheng returned to the capital and had concluded all his business, he was granted a month's leave to rest at home. Advanced in years and weakened by the burdens of office, having spent several years away from home separated from his family, he now found great happiness and relief in their peaceful reunion in the great hall. He turned over all matters great and small to others and merely read books; when bored, he played chess and drank with his literary guests; or during the day, he enjoyed the pleasures of family life with his mother, wife and children. As the third day of the eighth month was the eightieth birthday celebration of the Dowager, and since many relatives and friends were coming and there might not be enough space for the feasts, he discussed the matter early on with Jia She, Jia Zhen and Jia Lian and they decided to hold joint banquets at both the Rong and Ning mansions from the twenty-eighth of the seventh month through the fifth of the eighth month. The Ning mansion was to entertain only male guests, the Rong mansion only female guests; and in the Garden of Broad View, several large venues such as the Brocade Pavilion and the Hall of Fine Shade were prepared as places for rest. On the twenty-eighth, the imperial princes, dukes, princesses, rulers of vassal states, dowagers and ladies of rank were to be invited; on the twenty-nine, the grand secretaries, governors, commanders and their ladies; on the thirtieth, the various officials and their ladies, relatives, friends and female guests from near and far. The first of the eighth month was to be a family feast given by Jia She; the second by Jia Zheng; the third by Jia Zhen and Jia Lian; the fourth a combined family feast for all members of the Jia clan, old and young alike; and the fifth a feast for the chief stewards Lai Da, Lin Zhixiao and their households. From early in the seventh month, bearers of birthday gifts came in an unbroken stream. By order of the Ministry of Rites, the Emperor bestowed a gold and jade ruyi scepter, four rolls of colored silk, four gold and jade rings, and five hundred taels of imperial silver. Yuanchun also sent a eunuch bearing a gold statue of the Star of Longevity, a walking stick of aloeswood, a string of gharu-wood beads, a box of incense for blessings and long life, a pair of gold ingots, four pairs of silver ingots, twelve rolls of colored silk, and four jade cups. From the imperial princes and consorts down to officials of every rank, all who had dealings with the family sent gifts too numerous to record. A large table was set in the main hall covered with red felt, and all the finer items were displayed upon it for the Dowager to inspect. For the first day or two, she came over in high spirits to look at them; later, when she grew weary, she stopped inspecting them and said, "Let Fengjie put them away. I'll look at them some other day when I'm bored." By the twenty-eighth, both mansions were hung with lanterns and festooned with colored silks; screens were spread with phoenix patterns and embroidered cushions laid out; the sound of pipes and drums filled the streets and lanes far and wide. At the Ning mansion that day came only the Prince of Beijing, the Prince of Nan'an, the Prince Consort of Yongchang, the Prince of Leshan and a few hereditary dukes and marquises who were old family friends. At the Rong mansion were the Dowager Princess of Nan'an, the Princess of Beijing and several ladies of rank from families long connected with the Jias. The Dowager and the others, all formally dressed according to their rank, came out to welcome them. After the greetings, they were first invited to the Hall of Fine Shade in the Garden of Broad View; after tea and a change of clothes, they emerged to the Hall of Felicity and Celebration to offer birthday congratulations and take their seats at the feast. After considerable mutual deferring, they finally took their places. The two top seats were for the Princesses of Nan'an and Beijing; below them in order sat the ladies of rank of the various dukes and marquises. On the left, the lower seats were for the ladies of the Marquis of Jinxiang and the Earl of Linchang, guests of honor; on the right, the lower seats were for the Dowager as hostess. Lady Xing, Lady Wang, Madam You, Xifeng and several ladies of the clan stood in two rows like wild geese's wings behind the Dowager to attend her. The wives of Lin Zhixiao and Lai Da led all the serving women who stood outside the bamboo screen waiting to serve the dishes and wine; Zhou Rui's wife led several maids behind the surrounding screens waiting to answer summons. Those who had accompanied the guests were taken care of elsewhere. Presently, the actors came on to pay their respects, while twelve young servant boys with unshaven heads waited below the stage. Shortly after, one of them brought the playbill to the stairs and handed it to the woman in charge. She took it and passed it to the wife of Lin Zhixiao, who carried it on a small tea tray and entered the screen to hand it to Peifeng, Madam You's concubine. Peifeng took it and presented it to Madam You. Madam You carried it in both hands to the top seats, where the Dowager Princess of Nan'an deferred to her for a moment, then chose a scene of auspicious celebration. After further mutual deferring, the Princess of Beijing also chose a scene. The others then told them to pick any fine piece and perform it without ceremony. Before long, four courses of dishes had been served and the first soup course brought out; the attendants of the various households distributed the rewards. Then everyone changed clothes and re-entered the Garden for fresh tea.
The Princess of Nan'an asked about Baoyu. The Lady Dowager laughed and said, "Today several temples are reciting the Sutra for Peace and Longevity. He's gone to kneel through the service." She was then asked about the young ladies. The Lady Dowager laughed and said, "The girls are all either sick or delicate, and they're shy around strangers, so I've told them to stay and look after my rooms. There are some young actresses—I've had a troupe sent over to the hall on the other side to keep his cousins company while they watch the opera too." The Princess of Nan'an laughed and said, "In that case, send for them." The Lady Dowager turned her head and told Phoenix to bring the Xue, Shi, and Lin girls, "and just ask your Third Sister to come along with them." Phoenix assented and went to the Lady Dowager's quarters, where she found the girls eating fruit and watching the opera. Baoyu had just returned from kneeling through the sutra service at the temple. Phoenix delivered her message. Baochai, Daiyu, Tanchun, and Xiangyun went together to the garden, where they greeted everyone—offering salutes, inquiring after one's health, and making room for one another, as was proper. Some of the guests had met them before; one or two families had not. All praised them without cease. Xiangyun was the most familiar with the Princess of Nan'an, who laughed and said, "You were here all along and didn't come out when you heard I'd arrived—you had to be invited. I'll settle accounts with your uncle tomorrow." She took Tanchun by one hand and Baochai by the other, asked how old they were, and praised them repeatedly. Then she released them and took hold of Daiyu and Baoqin, examining them closely and praising them lavishly. She laughed and said, "They're all so fine—I don't know which one to praise!" Someone had already prepared five sets of gifts: five gold and jade rings and five strings of fragrant wrist beads. The Princess of Nan'an laughed and said, "Don't laugh at these, young ladies—keep them to give to your maids." The five curtseied and thanked her. The Princess of Beijing also had five gifts; the others need not be described in detail.
After tea, they strolled briefly through the garden, and the Lady Dowager and the others invited them to take their seats again. The Princess of Nan'an then took her leave, saying she was unwell. "If I hadn't come today, it would have been quite impossible, so forgive me for saying goodbye first." The Lady Dowager and the others, hearing this, did not press her to stay. After further courtesies, they escorted her to the garden gate, where she got into her sedan chair and departed. The Princess of Beijing sat a while and then took her leave as well. Of the other guests, some stayed through the end of the banquet and some did not. The Lady Dowager was exhausted from the day's exertions and did not receive visitors the next day; everything was managed by Lady Xing and Lady Wang. The sons of noble families who had come to offer birthday congratulations merely performed their bows in the main hall, where Jia She, Jia Zheng, and Jia Zhen received them and entertained them, after which they went to the Ning Mansion for the banquet. But enough of these matters.
In recent days, Madam You had not been returning to the other mansion in the evenings. She received guests during the day and slept in Li's rooms in the garden at night. That evening, after she had served the Lady Dowager her supper, the Lady Dowager said, "You're all tired, and I'm tired too. Go and find yourselves something to eat and rest early. We'll have to rise early and make a fuss again tomorrow." Madam You assented and withdrew, going to Phoenix's room to eat. Phoenix was upstairs supervising the delivery of new folding screens received as gifts. Only P'ing-erh was in the room folding clothes with Phoenix. Madam You asked, "Has your mistress eaten yet?" P'ing-erh laughed and said, "Wouldn't she have invited you if she were eating?" Madam You laughed and said, "In that case, I'll look for food elsewhere. I'm starving." With that, she started to leave. P'ing-erh hurriedly laughed and said, "Do come back, madam. We have some refreshments here—have a little something to tide you over, and then eat properly when you return." Madam You laughed and said, "You're all so busy. I'll go and amuse myself with the girls in the garden." Even as she spoke, she was on her way out. P'ing-erh couldn't keep her, and had no choice but to let her go.
Meanwhile, You-shi had made her way to the Garden and found that the main gate and all the side gates were still unshut, with the coloured lanterns still hanging. She turned her head and ordered a young maid to fetch the women on duty. The maid went into the duty room but found not a single soul there, and came back to report this to You-shi. You-shi then ordered that the women who managed household affairs be summoned. The maid assented and went out, and at the inner gate, in the Deer's Summit—the place where the women managers gathered to discuss matters—she found only two old women dividing up fruits and vegetables. She asked, "Which madam is here? The Rong-guo madam is waiting for one of the madams; she has instructions to give." The two old women, absorbed in dividing the fruits and vegetables, and hearing that it was a madam from the Ning-guo mansion, paid her little heed and answered, "The stewardesses have just dispersed." The young maid said, "If they've dispersed, then go to their homes and summon them." The old women replied, "We are only here to look after the house; we are not responsible for summoning people. If you want someone summoned, send someone whose job it is to summon people." The young maid said, "Ai-ya, ai-ya, this is sheer insubordination! Why won't you summon them? If you're trying to deceive someone new here, you've picked the wrong person! On ordinary days, who else would summon them if not you? But the moment you've heard some private bit of news, or someone has given one of the stewardesses a present, you scramble to deliver it like dogs wagging their tails, not knowing who's who. If Lian Second Mistress were to send for someone, would you answer her like this?" The two old women, partly because they had been drinking and partly because the maid had exposed their misconduct, were stung with shame and anger and retorted, "Shame on you! Whether we summon them or not is none of your business! Don't you expose our faults—think about it, your own father and mother, flattering those gentlemen managers over there, are even better at toadying than we are. When it comes to 'mixed flour in clear water—you eat it and I see it too,' each family has its own door, each household its own gate. If you have the ability, go show off with your own people over there. As for our side, you'd best stay out of it!" The maid, upon hearing this, turned white with anger and said, "Fine, fine, well said!" She turned and went back to report. You-shi had already entered the Garden and, encountering Xiren, Baoqin, and Xiangyun, who were listening to two nuns from the地藏庵 tell stories and laughing together, said she was hungry and went first to Happy Red Court. Xiren brought out several meat and vegetarian pastries for You-shi to eat. The two nuns, Baoqin, and Xiangyun all drank tea and continued listening to the story. The young maid came straight there and angrily recounted everything that had been said. You-shi listened and said with a cold laugh, "Who are these two people?" The two nuns, Baoqin, Xiangyun, and the others, fearing that You-shi might lose her temper, hurriedly said, "There's no such thing; this girl must have misheard." The two nuns laughingly pushed the maid and said, "You are a spirited child, but you shouldn't be repeating the words of those muddled old nannies. Our madam, a person of great worth, has had a tiring few days and hasn't had a bite of food or a sip of wine. We can barely manage to amuse her for a while—what's the point of saying such things?" Xiren also quickly smiled and pulled her out, saying, "Good sister, go out and rest a bit; I'll send someone to call them." You-shi said, "Don't you send anyone. You go and summon those two old women, and then go over there and have them call Feng-er from their household." Xiren smiled and said, "I'll go invite them." You-shi said, "I particularly don't want you to go." The two nuns quickly stood up and smiled, saying, "Madam, you are always generous and magnanimous. Today is the Old Ancestress's birthday celebration—if you were to lose your temper, wouldn't people talk?" Baoqin and Xiangyun both chimed in with their persuasions. You-shi said, "If it weren't for the Old Ancestress's birthday, I would not let this go. For now, let it rest."
In the meantime, Xiren had already sent another maid to look for someone outside the Garden gate. As it happened, she came upon Zhou Rui's wife. The young maid told her everything she had heard. Zhou Rui's wife, though she had no official duties, had always enjoyed some standing because she had been Lady Wang's dowry attendant, and she was cunning and slippery by nature, always busy currying favour and seeking goodwill everywhere, so that the masters and mistresses of every household liked her. Having heard what had happened, she hurried into Happy Red Court, half-running all the way, saying as she went, "The madam is furious—this is terrible! Things in our household have become intolerable. It's my bad luck not to have been there—if I had been, I would have given them a few slaps across the face, and then settled accounts with them after these few days." When You-shi saw her, she smiled and said, "Sister Zhou, come here and hear me out. The gates are still wide open at this hour, with bright lanterns and candles, and people coming and going in a mixed crowd—if something were to happen unexpectedly, what then? So I told the women on duty to blow out the lamps and shut the gates. Who would have thought there wasn't a single soul there?" Zhou Rui's wife said, "This is outrageous! Just the other day the Second Mistress gave them orders, saying that these days there are many people and much business, and that they should close the gates and blow out the lamps every evening and not let anyone into the Garden who doesn't belong there. And today there's no one there at all. After these few days are over, we must have a few of them beaten." You-shi then told her what the young maid had said. Zhou Rui's wife said, "Don't be angry, madam. After this is over, I'll tell the managers to give them a sound thrashing. I'll ask them, who told them to say such things as 'each family has its own door, each household its own gate'? I've already told them to blow out the lamps and shut the main gate and the side gates." Just then, in the midst of all this confusion, someone sent by Sister Feng came to invite them to dinner. You-shi said, "I'm not hungry anymore; I've just eaten a few pastries. Please let your madam eat on her own."
Presently Zhou Rui's wife, finding an opportunity, went out and reported what had happened to Fengjie. She added, "These two old women are stewardesses who manage household affairs. Whenever we talk to them, they're as fierce as venomous insects. If you don't discipline them, the Eldest Young Madam will lose face." Fengjie said, "In that case, write down their names. In a few days, have them bound and sent over to that manor for the Eldest Sister-in-law to deal with. Whether she gives them a few strokes or mercifully lets them off, that's her affair. What great matter is it?" Zhou Rui's wife was only too delighted to hear this. Having long been on bad terms with these women, she went out and ordered a young servant to go to Lin Zhixiao's house and deliver Fengjie's message, summoning Lin Zhixiao's wife immediately to come and see the Eldest Young Madam. At the same time, she ordered the two old women to be bound at once and sent to the horse stables, where guards were posted to watch them.
Lin Zhixiao's wife did not know what this was about. By now the lamps had been lit, so she hurriedly drove in. She first went to see Fengjie. A message was passed inside the second gate, and the maids came out saying, "Our Mistress has just retired. The Eldest Young Madam is in the Garden. You're told to go see the Eldam Young Madam." Lin Zhixiao's wife had no choice but into the Garden and came to Paddy-Sweet Village. The maids announced her. When Madam You heard this, she felt rather embarrassed and quickly called her in, smiling as she said, "I only asked you because I couldn't find anyone. Since you'd already gone, it wasn't anything important. Who sent for you again? I've made you make this trip for nothing. It's a small matter, and I've already let it go." Lin Zhixiao's wife smiled and said, "Second Mistress sent for me, saying you had instructions for me." Madam You laughed, "What nonsense is that? I only asked as if you hadn't gone. Who went out of their way to tell Sister Feng? It must have been Sister Zhou. Go home and rest. There's nothing important." Li Wan was about to explain the matter, but Madam You stopped her. Seeing how things stood, Lin Zhixiao's wife had no choice but to turn and leave the Garden. As it happened, she ran into Concubine Zhao. The Concubine smiled and said, "Oh my, Sister-in-law! Why haven't you gone home to rest yet? What are you still running around for?" Lin Zhixiao's wife smiled and explained that she hadn't gone home yet and described what had happened. It was one of those tangled stories. Concubine Zhao was always keen on picking up such gossip, and she had long been thick with the stewardesses, keeping in league with them and covering for each other. She had already heard eight or nine tenths of what had happened. After listening to Lin Zhixiao's wife, she told her the whole story from beginning to end. When Lin Zhixiao's wife heard it, she laughed and said, "So that's what it's about! It's not worth a fart! If she's merciful, she won't bother with it. If she's a bit narrow-minded, they'll just get a few strokes and that will be the end of it." Concubine Zhao said, "Sister-in-law, the matter may be small, but it shows how insolent they've become. They specially sent for you just to make a fool of you and toy with you. Hurry off and rest. There'll be things to do tomorrow—I won't even keep you for tea."
After this, Lin Zhixiao's wife came out. When she reached the side gate, the daughters of the two old women came up weeping and pleading for mercy. Lin Zhixiao's wife laughed and said, "You foolish child! Who told your mother to drink and talk nonsense, bringing trouble on herself? I didn't even know about it. The Second Mistress had her bound, and even I was blamed. Who would I plead for?" These two young maids were only seven or eight years old and didn't understand anything; they just wept and begged. They pestered Lin Zhixiao's wife so much that she had no recourse and said, "You muddle-headed things! You have a way out but won't take it, instead pestering me. Your older sister is married to the son of Sister Fei, the dowager's companion over in that household. Go tell your sister, and let your sister's mother-in-law speak to the Mistress—then everything will be settled!" This reminder struck one of them, but the other kept begging. Lin Zhixiao's wife spat and said, "You stupid fool! Once she goes and speaks, it will all be settled. There's no reason to let only her mother off and only beat your mother." With that, she got into her carriage and left.
This little maid indeed went to tell her sister and Fei Pazi about it. Now, this Fei Pazi had originally been Lady Xing's personal attendant. She had once had her moment of glory, but because the Dowager had recently shown less favor to Lady Xing, even people on this side had lost their prestige. Anyone with some standing on Jia Zheng's side was eyed with hostility by those on the other side. This Fei Pazi often took advantage of her age, relying on Lady Xing, and would frequently drink, cursing and complaining to vent her anger. Now, at the Dowager's grand birthday celebration, she could only watch others show off their talents and abilities, directing the work with loud commands and bustling about, which made her feel ill at ease. She cursed at one thing while meaning another, making trouble with idle gossip. People on this side did not bother to argue with her. Now, hearing that Zhou Rui's wife had bound her relative, she was like pouring oil on a fire. Relying on the effects of alcohol, she shouted a string of curses at the dividing wall, then came forward to beg Lady Xing, saying that her relative had done nothing wrong: "It was just a few words of quarrel with the younger maid of the Elder Young Mistress of that mansion, and Zhou Rui's wife instigated our Second Young Mistress to have her bound and put in the stable. After these two days, they still mean to beat her. I beg Your Ladyship—my relative's mother is an old woman of seventy or eighty—to speak to the Second Young Mistress and spare her this time."
Lady Xing had already felt embarrassed after the matter of Yuanyang, and later seeing the Dowager grow even colder toward her, while Xifeng's prestige surpassed her own, and when the Princess of Nan'an had come the other day wanting to see the young ladies, the Dowager had only sent Tanchun out, while Yingchun was treated as if she barely existed—all this had long filled her with resentment and frustration, though she could no longer express it. Moreover, there were these petty people around her, who dared not openly show their jealousy and grievances, so they slandered and stirred up trouble behind her back and set their mistress against others. At first, they only informed on the servants on the other side, but gradually they began to speak against Xifeng: "She only fools the Dowager into liking her so she can act like a tyrant and lord it over Master Lian, and she sets Second Lady against you, not putting the proper Lady of this house in her heart at all." Later, they even went to Lady Wang, saying: "The Dowager dislikes you, Lady, all because of the Second Lady and Second Young Mistress Lian's instigations." Though Lady Xing might have a heart of iron and a chest of bronze, as a woman she could not help but develop some feelings of estrangement. Recently, she had come to thoroughly detest Xifeng because of all this. Now, hearing such a speech, she said nothing for or against it.
The next morning, after paying her respects to the Dowager, all the clansmen arrived, and the banquet and opera began. The Dowager was in high spirits. Seeing that there were no distant relatives today, only her own clansmen and nephews, she came out in informal dress to receive their greetings in the main hall. A single couch was set up in the middle, complete with bolster, backrest, and footrest, and she herself reclined on it. In front, behind, and on both sides of the couch were small low stools, all of the same kind, surrounded by Baochai, Baoqin, Daiyu, Xiangyun, Yingchun, Tanchun, Xichun, and the other sisters. Since Jia Bin's mother had brought her daughter Xiluan, and Jia Qiong's mother had brought her daughter Sijie, along with granddaughters from several other branches, there were altogether some twenty of them. The Dowager noticed that Xiluan and Sijie were both handsome and behaved differently from the others, and being pleased, she ordered them to come and sit by her couch. Baoyu was at the foot of the couch, massaging the Dowager's legs. The chief seat was occupied by Aunt Xue, and the two rows below were arranged according to seniority and branch of the family. Outside the curtain, in the two corridors, the male guests were also seated in order. First, the female guests came in groups to pay their respects, and then the male guests. The Dowager reclined on her couch and merely said "You're excused," and they had all finished their bows. Then Lai Da and others led the people from the ceremonial gate all the way to the great hall, kneeling and kowtowing, after which came the household wives of the various branches, then the maids of each household—it was quite a commotion for two or three meal times. Then many bird cages were brought out and released in the courtyard. After Jia She and the others had burned the paper offerings to Heaven, Earth, and the Star of Longevity, the opera began and the drinking commenced. Not until the midday performance ended did the Dowager come in to rest, telling the others to make themselves comfortable, and she ordered Xifeng to keep Xiluan and Sijie for two more days of amusement. Xifeng came out and spoke to their mothers, who had always received Xifeng's favor and were only too glad to agree. The two girls themselves were also happy to play in the garden, and they did not return home until evening.
Lady Xing waited until the dispersal in the evening, and in front of many people, she smiled and pleaded with Xifeng: "I heard that last night the Second Young Mistress was angry and sent Master Zhou's wife to bind two old women, though I don't know what crime they had committed. In principle, I shouldn't intercede, but I thought that on the Old Lady's good day, she is generous in giving money and rice to help the poor and the old, yet our own house has started tormenting people first. If not for my face, then at least for the Old Lady's sake, let them go." With that, she got into her carriage and left. Xifeng, hearing these words in front of so many people, was both ashamed and furious. For a moment, she was at a loss, her face turning purple with rage. She turned around and smiled at Lai Da's wife and the others: "Where did that come from? Yesterday, because someone here offended the Elder Young Mistress of that mansion, I was afraid the Elder Young Mistress would take offense, so I let her handle the matter entirely—it had nothing to do with offending me. Who is this ear-and-eye messenger who works so fast?" Lady Wang asked what the matter was, and Xifeng laughingly recounted what had happened the day before. Lady You also smiled and said: "Even I didn't know about it. You really are too meddlesome." Xifeng said: "I did it to save your face, so I waited for you to handle it—it was merely a matter of courtesy. Just as if someone offended me at your place, you would naturally send them over to let me deal with them. No matter how favored a servant is, they cannot go beyond this courtesy. And then someone went over and eagerly offered this information, treating it as a matter worth reporting." Lady Wang said: "You are too—"
"What you say is right. Sister-in-law Zhen is no outsider either—there's no need for such formalities. The Old Ancestral Lady's birthday celebration is what matters. Let them go, and that's the right thing to do." With that, she turned and ordered the servants to release the two old women. Wang Xifeng, unable to contain herself, grew more and more indignant and ashamed. Her spirits sank, grief welled up, and tears began to roll down her cheeks. In a fit of pique, she returned to her rooms to cry, taking care that no one should notice. Just then, the Old Ancestal Lady sent Amber to summon her at once for a word. Amber was surprised when she saw her. "What's the matter? Everything was fine a moment ago. She's waiting for you right now." Xifeng heard this, quickly wiped her tears, washed her face, and applied fresh powder and rouge. Then she went over with Amber. The Old Ancestal Lady asked her, "How many households sent us screens among the gifts the other day?" Xifeng replied, "Sixteen households sent screens in all. Twelve are large ones, and four are smaller kang screens. The best is a large twelve-panel screen from the Zhen family in Jiangnan—red satin kesi embroidery depicting 'Full Court of Tablets,' with a 'Hundred Longevity Characters' design in gold on lacquer on the other side. The next best is a glass screen from the family of General Wu of Yuehai." The Old Ancestal Lady said, "In that case, keep those two screens and store them carefully. I want to give them to someone." Xifeng assented. Yuanyang suddenly came over and stared fixedly at Xifeng's face, which made the Old Ancestal Lady ask, "Don't you know her? What are you staring at?" Yuanyang smiled. "Why are her eyes all swollen? That's why I'm so surprised—I couldn't help looking." The Old Ancestal Lady, upon hearing this, called her closer and peered at her face. Xifeng smiled. "My eyes were itching just now. I rubbed them and they got a little swollen." Yuanyang smiled. "Could it be that someone's been giving you a hard time?" Xifeng said, "Who would dare to upset me? And even if they did, on the Old Ancestal Lady's auspicious day, I wouldn't dare cry." The Old Ancestal Lady said, "Exactly so. I'm just about to have my evening dinner. Stay here and help me eat. What's left you can share with Sister-in-law Zhen. You two can help the two nuns here pick out Buddhist beans for me. It will accumulate merit for you as well. The other day your sisters and Baoyu all picked some. Now I want you two to pick some too—so no one can say I'm partial." As she spoke, a vegetarian table was laid out first. The two nuns ate, and then the meat dishes were brought out. After the Old Ancestal Lady had finished eating, the tables were removed to the outer room. Madam You and Xifeng were just eating when the Old Ancestal Lady called for Xiluan and Sijie to come and eat with them. After the two of them had finished, they washed their hands, lit incense, and a measure of beans was brought in. The two nuns first recited Buddhist verses, then picked up the beans one by one, placing each in a winnowing basket and reciting a prayer with each one. The next day they would be cooked and distributed at the crossroads to create karmic connections for longevity. The Old Ancestal Lady reclined and listened as the two nuns spoke of Buddhist teachings on karma and good deeds. Yuanyang had already heard from Amber about Xifeng's crying, and had gone to Ping'er earlier to find out the reason. When the guests had dispersed in the evening, she reported: "The Second Mistress was still crying. The First Lady gave the Second Mistress a public humiliation over there in front of everyone." The Old Ancestal Lady asked what the reason was, and Yuanyang told her the whole story. The Old Ancestal Lady said, "This shows that our Feng girl knows her manners. Should I let the servants offend all the masters of the whole clan on my birthday and not say anything about it? It's because the Lady has been nursing ill feelings all along and dared not vent them before. Today she seized on this as an excuse—it was clearly meant to humiliate Feng'er in front of everyone." Just then, Baoqin and the others came in, and the conversation stopped. The Old Ancestal Lady asked, "Where have you come from?" Baoqin replied, "We were all talking in Miss Lin's room in the Garden." The Old Ancestal Lady suddenly remembered something and quickly called an old woman servant, instructing her: "Go to all the women in the Garden and give them my instructions. Though Xijie and Sijie, who are staying with us, are poor, they are to be treated the same as our own young ladies, and everyone must look after them with care. I know that all the men and women of our family have 'one heart set on wealth and two eyes on face'—they're likely to look down on those two girls. If anyone treats them lightly, I won't stand for it when I hear of it." The old woman assented and was about to leave when Yuanyang said, "Let me go. They won't listen to her over there." With that, she went straight to the Garden.
First, they went to Paddy-Sweet Village, but Li Wan and You-shi were not there. When the maids were asked, they said, "They're all at Third Miss's place." Yuanyang turned back and went again to the Hall of Morning Emeralds, where she found all the people in the garden chatting and laughing. When they saw her coming, they all laughed and said, "What are you running over here for now?" They also offered her a seat. Yuanyang smiled and said, "Won't you let me stroll around too?" Then she repeated what had just been said. Li Wan hastily stood up to listen, and then ordered someone to summon the head of each department. She instructed them to pass the word on to everyone. Without further ado, You-shi here laughed and said, "The Old Lady really thinks of everything. Even ten of us young, strong people tied together couldn't keep up with her." Li Wan said, "That Feng girl, relying on her sly cleverness, still doesn't fall too far behind. But we can't manage it." Yuanyang said, "Oh, come on, stop talking about Feng girl and Tiger girl. She's really pitiable too. Although these past years she hasn't put a foot wrong in front of the Old Lady and the Mistress, who knows how many people she's offended behind their backs. In any case, it's hard to be a person: if you're too honest and lack resourcefulness, your in-laws complain you're too honest, and your own family doesn't fear you either. If you have some resourcefulness, you inevitably cure one ailment only to cause another. Now our household is even better off—these newly emerged maids with 'slave' in their titles, every single one of them is so self-satisfied they don't know what to do with themselves. If they're the least bit displeased, they either gossip behind people's backs or stir things up here and there. I'm afraid of making the Old Lady angry, so I haven't said a word. Otherwise, I'd tell you all, and none of us would live in peace anymore. I'm not saying this just in front of Third Miss—the Old Lady dotes on Baoyu, and if some people grumble behind his backs, well, that's favoritism. But now the Old Lady dotes on you, and I think that's not good either. Isn't that laughable?" Tanchun laughed and said, "There are plenty of muddle-headed people—how can you compare so many things? I say it's better to be from a poor family with few people. Although they're humble and plain, they're happy and joyful, and everyone is cheerful. Our kind of family has many people. Outsiders look at us and think we're young ladies worth a thousand or ten thousand pieces of gold, having such a good time. They don't know the unspeakable difficulties we have here—they're even worse." Baoyu said, "Everyone is like Third Sister, worrying about so many things. I always advise you about everything—don't listen to those vulgar sayings or think about those worldly matters. Just enjoy your wealth and honor. Unlike us, who don't have this pure blessing and ought to wallow in the muck." You-shi said, "Everyone is like you—truly carefree and unburdened, only knowing how to joke and play with your sisters, eating when hungry and sleeping when tired. In a few more years, you'll still be just like this, giving no thought to the future at all." Baoyu smiled and said, "If I can spend one more day with my sisters, that's one more day. When I'm dead, it's over. What future or no future?" Li Wan and the others all laughed and said, "That's nonsense again. Even if you're good for nothing and spend your whole life here, do you think your sisters will never leave home?" You-shi laughed and said, "No wonder people say he was wrongly born with that body—he's really simple-minded and foolish." Baoyu smiled and said, "Human affairs are uncertain—who knows who will die and who will live. If I die today or tomorrow, this year or next year, that would still be a life lived to my heart's content." Before he could finish, everyone said, "He's gone crazy again. Best not to talk to him. If you talk to him, it's either foolish talk or crazy talk." Xichun therefore smiled and said, "Second Brother, don't talk like that. When the sisters here have all married and left, at any rate the Old Lady and the Mistress will be lonely. I'll come keep you company." Li Wan, You-shi, and the others all laughed and said, "Don't talk foolishly either, young lady. Do you mean you won't leave home? Who are you trying to fool with that?" This made Xichun lower her head. By now it was the first watch of the night, and everyone returned to their rooms to rest. Nothing more need be said about the others.

Yuanyang had just come back along the path and was approaching the garden gate when she noticed the side gate half-closed and not yet bolted. At this hour no one was passing through the garden; only the duty room showed a faint glow of lamplight, and a sliver of moon hung in the sky. Yuanyang had no companion, carried no lantern, and walked so lightly that the people on duty took no notice of her. She happened to need to relieve herself, so she left the main path and looked for a grassy spot. She made her way to a clump of great laurels behind some lake rocks. Just as she rounded the rocks, she heard the rustling of clothes and started in alarm. Looking closely, she saw two people there. When they noticed her coming, they tried to hide themselves behind the rocks and among the bushes. Yuanyang had sharp eyes and, by the moonlight, recognized a tall, robust girl in a red skirt with a puffed-out coiffure—Siqi from Yingchun's quarters. Yuanyang assumed she had simply come to relieve herself like the other girls, and that seeing her they were hiding on purpose to frighten her for a joke. So she called out with a laugh, "Siqi, don't hide—you've scared me. I'll shout for the guards and have you arrested as a thief! A big girl like you—can't you ever stop fooling around, day and night?" This was meant as a joke to coax her out. But a thief has a guilty conscience: Siqi thought Yuanyang had seen everything. Fearing that if she called out the whole household would know, and knowing that Yuanyang was closer to her than to anyone else, she ran out from behind the tree, seized Yuanyang, and dropped to her knees. "Dear sister, please don't cry out!" Yuanyang had no idea what this was about and quickly pulled her up, asking with a smile, "What's the meaning of this?" Siqi's face was flushed, and tears streamed down her cheeks. Yuanyang thought again and realized the other figure had looked like a page boy. Now she had a pretty good guess, and her own face turned scarlet with embarrassment and alarm. After a moment she asked in a low voice, "Who is he?" Siqi knelt down again. "He's my cousin." Yuanyang spat. "You'll be the death of me!" Siqi turned and called softly, "Don't hide anymore—she's seen you. Quick, come out and kowtow." The page had no choice but to crawl out from behind the rocks and kowtow as if pounding garlic. Yuanyang tried to leave, but Siqi held her back and begged piteously through her tears, "Our lives depend on you, dear sister. We're counting on your mercy!" Yuanyang said, "Don't worry. I won't tell a single soul, that's for sure." Before she had finished, someone at the side gate called out, "Miss Jin has gone out. Lock the gate." Yuanyang, who was still being held by Siqi, could not get away, but hearing this she called back, "I'm busy here. Wait a moment—I'm coming." Hearing this, Siqi had no choice but to let her go.

What happened next will be told in the following chapter.
