娛人傀儡,顧不得面是背非;
斑毛老子,猖狂燎盡白髭鬚;
如花仕女,人叢中金墜玉崩;

Wu Song said to Song Jiang, "Today we are most fortunate that our elder brother is safe and unharmed, and that Doctor An is in the stronghold attending to your illness. This is a matter of boundless good fortune for Liangshan Marsh. While you were confined to your bed, I repeatedly sent men to Daming Prefecture to gather intelligence. The prefect, Liang Shizhong, has been in a state of constant dread day and night, fearing our army might descend upon the city. I also had men go directly into the city of Beijing—through every street and marketplace within and beyond the walls—posting anonymous notices everywhere to reassure the people, telling them not to worry. Every grievance has its source, every debt its creditor. When the army arrives in the prefecture, it will have its proper targets. For this reason, Liang Shizhong has grown ever more suspicious and fearful. When Grand Tutor Cai in the Eastern Capital learned that Guan Sheng had surrendered, he dared not mention it before the Son of Heaven. He advocates only for an amnesty and pacification, so that all parties may be left in peace. For this reason, he has repeatedly sent letters to Liang Shizhong, instructing him to spare the lives of Lu Junyi and Shi Xiu, so that they may serve as bargaining chips."
When Song Jiang heard this, he wished to urge the army to descend the mountain and attack Beijing at once. Wu Yong said, "It is now late winter turning to early spring, and the Lantern Festival is approaching. Beijing's custom is to mount a grand display of lanterns and lights. I intend to take advantage of this opportunity. We will first place men in hiding within the city, while our forces advance from outside. With an attack from within and without working in concert, the city can be taken." Song Jiang said, "This plan is excellent! Let the Military Commander make the arrangements." Wu Yong said, "The most critical matter of all is that someone set a fire within the city as a signal. Among all you brothers here, who dares go with me to set the fire in the city first?" At that moment, a man stepped forward from the foot of the steps and said, "This junior brother volunteers to go." When the others looked, it was Shi Qian, the "Flea on a Drum." Shi Qian said, "In my younger years, I once visited Beijing. Inside the city there is a tower called the Jade Cloud Tower. Above and below it, there are over a hundred chambers large and small. It is plain to see that on the night of the Lantern Festival, it will be bustling with crowds. I will steal into the city in secret and, on the night of the fifteenth day of the first month, climb up to the Jade Cloud Tower and set a fire there as the signal. The Military Commander can then deploy men to storm the prison—this is the best plan." Wu Yong said, "This is exactly what I had in mind. Tomorrow at dawn, go down the mountain ahead of the others. On the night of the Lantern Festival, at the first watch, set the fire in the tower, and the credit will be yours." Shi Qian accepted the order and departed.
The following day, Wu Yong dispatched Xie Zhen and Xie Bao, dressed as hunters, to present wild game to the households of officials within Beijing. On the night of the fifteenth day of the first month, they were to watch for the fire as their signal, then go to the front of the Office of the Prefect and intercept any soldiers carrying reports. The two accepted their orders and left. Next, he dispatched Du Qian and Song Wan, dressed as rice merchants, pushing a cart, to lodge within the city. On the night of the Lantern Festival, when they saw the signal fire, they were to seize the East Gate. "This will be your two brothers' achievement." The two accepted their orders and left. Then he dispatched Kong Ming and Kong Liang, dressed as servants, to lodge beneath the eaves in the busy quarters of Beijing. When they saw the fire break out in front of the tower, they were to move about providing support. The two accepted their orders and left. Next, he dispatched Li Ying and Shi Jin, dressed as travelers, to rest outside the East Gate of Beijing. When they saw the signal fire within the city, they were to behead the gate guards and seize the East Gate, to serve as an escape route. The two accepted their orders and left. Then he dispatched Lu Zhishen and Wu Song, dressed as itinerant monks, to take lodging at a convent outside the walls of Beijing. When they saw the signal fire within the city, they were to go to the South Gate and block the army's path of retreat. The two accepted their orders and left. Next, he dispatched Zou Yuan and Zou Run, dressed as lantern merchants, to go directly into Beijing and find an inn to lodge in. When they saw the fire break out in the tower, they were to provide support in front of the Prison Administration Office. The two accepted their orders and left. Then he dispatched Liu Tang and Yang Xiong, dressed as yamen runners, to lodge directly in front of the prefectural offices of Beijing. When they saw the signal fire, they were to intercept all messengers and runners, preventing them from coordinating relief in any direction. The two accepted their orders and left. Next, he dispatched the Taoist master Gongsun Sheng, dressed as a wandering Taoist priest, and had Ling Zhen dress as a Taoist boy to accompany him, carrying several hundred fire-bursting and sky-shaking bombs. They were to go directly into a quiet place within Beijing and wait. When they saw the signal fire, they were to set off their charges. The two accepted their orders and left. Then he dispatched Zhang Shun to follow Yan Qing, entering the city through the Water Gate and going straight to the residence of Squire Lu, to seize the adulterous couple. Next, he dispatched Wang Ying the Dwarf, Sun Xin, Zhang Qing, Hu San'er, Gu Dasao, and Sun Erniang, dressed as three country couples, to enter the city to view the lanterns and set fire to Lu Junyi's house. Then he dispatched Chai Jin, together with Yue He, dressed as military officers, to go directly to the home of Warden Cai, to ensure the rescue and protection of the two prisoners' lives. The dispositions having been settled, all the chieftains accepted their orders and departed. Each was to obey the military commands without fail.
It was early in the first month. Leaving aside how the Liangshan heroes set out one after another down the mountain, let us speak of Grand Secretary Liang in Daliang, who summoned a group of officials including Li Cheng, Wen Da, and Prefect Wang to discuss the lantern festival. Liang said, "It is our annual custom to illuminate Daliang on a grand scale for the Lantern Festival, celebrating the first full moon in common with the people, in exactly the same fashion as the Eastern Capital. But now that the Liangshan bandits have twice invaded our territory, I fear that holding the festival may invite disaster. I am inclined to suspend the celebrations. What do you officials think?"
Wen Da replied, "These bandits have crept away into the shadows, posting wild notices everywhere. They are at their wits' end and can have no real plan. Why does Your Honor worry so much? If we do not hold the festival this year, their spies will learn of it and they will surely mock us. You should issue an edict informing the citizens: we will install more lanterns than last year, add folk performances, and erect two additional Ao Mountains in the marketplace. Following the Eastern Capital's precedent, we will lift the night curfew and hold the festival for five nights, from the thirteenth to the seventeenth. Have the prefect ensure that all households participate. Your Honor should personally conduct the spring procession and make a point of sharing the people's joy. I will lead a force of soldiers out of the camp and station them at Feihu Valley to guard against any treacherous scheme by the bandits. And have Supervisor Li personally lead cavalry patrols around the city so that the citizens need not be alarmed."
Liang was delighted when he heard this. The officials having reached their decision, they immediately posted notices informing the citizens. Daliang, the seat of the Grand Secretariat, was the foremost strategic city of Hebei, where merchants from every road converged like gathering clouds. Upon hearing that the lanterns would be displayed, they all came to take part. The ward officials of every district and lane were charged with daily inspections and had to organize the folk performances. Wealthy families vied with one another in displaying their lanterns. Some traveled two or three hundred li to buy them, while others went over a hundred li. There were also merchants who brought lanterns to the city to sell year after year. Every household erected lantern racks before its door and competed to hang the finest lanterns and ingenious fireworks. Inside, they set up mountain-shelf displays and arranged five-colored screens and firework lanterns, with famous paintings, rare curios, and strange antiques hung on every side. In every street and alley of the city, every household had to light its lanterns. By the Zhou Bridge of the Grand Secretariat's prefecture, an Ao Mountain was erected, upon which coiled two dragons of red and yellow paper. Each scale bore a single lantern, and the dragons spouted clear water. Lanterns were hung all around the river below the Zhou Bridge beyond counting. Before the Bronze Buddha Temple, another Ao Mountain was set up, bearing a single green dragon, surrounded by a thousand or more lanterns. Before the Jade Cloud Tower, yet another Ao Mountain was raised, coiled about by a white dragon, with fires lit on all sides beyond reckoning. This wine tower was renowned throughout Hebei, ranked the very finest. It had three tiers of eaves with dripping waters, carved beams and painted pillars, magnificently constructed. Above and below, there were over a hundred private rooms, filled with the din of drums and music all day long and the clamor of pipes and songs every day. In every temple and monastery, every Buddhist hall and dharma hall in the city, lanterns were lit to celebrate the bountiful year. The teahouses, wine shops, and other entertainment establishments need not even be mentioned.
When the Liangshan scouts learned of this news, they reported it back up the mountain. Wu Yong was overjoyed and went to tell Song Jiang all the details. Song Jiang wanted to lead the attack on Daliang himself, but An Daoquan remonstrated: "Your wounds have not yet healed. You absolutely must not move lightly. If anger and vital force should clash within you, recovery will be truly difficult." Wu Yong said, "I will go in Brother's place." He then joined "Iron-Faced Magistrate" Pei Xuan in deploying eight columns of troops:
The first column: Huyan Zhuo leading Han Tao and Peng Qi as the vanguard, with "Suppressing Three Mountains" Huang Xin bringing up the rear—all cavalry. (The Huyan Zhuo who had been defeated in battle before was a decoy, meant to lure Guan Sheng; this was the plan they had devised.)
The second column: "Leopard-Head" Lin Chong leading Ma Lin and Deng Fei as the vanguard, with "Little Li Guang" Rong bringing up the rear—all cavalry.
The third column: "Great Blade" Guan Sheng leading Xuan Zan and Hao Siwen as the vanguard, with "Sick Yuchi" Sun Li bringing up the rear—all cavalry.
The fourth column: "Firebolt" Qin Ming leading Ou Peng and Yan Shun as the vanguard, with "Blue-Faced Beast" Yang Zhi bringing up the rear—all cavalry.
The fifth column: the infantry chief "Unstoppable" Mu Hong leading Du Xing and Zheng Tianshou.
The sixth column: the infantry chief "Black Whirlwind" Li Kui leading Li Li and Cao Zheng.
The seventh column: the infantry chief "Winged Tiger" Lei Heng leading Shi En and Mu Chun.
The eighth column: the infantry chief "Demon King of Chaos" Fan Rui leading Xiang Chong and Li Gun.
These eight columns of horse and foot soldiers were each to take their own roads and were to set out immediately, without missing the appointed time. On the fifteenth day of the first month, at the second watch, they were to converge beneath the walls of Daliang. Cavalry and infantry would advance together. These eight columns set out down the mountain as ordered, while the remaining chieftains all remained with Song Jiang to guard the stronghold.
Let me tell of Shi Qian, a man who could scale walls and walk along rooftops. He did not enter the city by the main road but slipped over the wall by night. The inns within the city refused to take in single travelers, so he wandered the streets by day and slept beneath the altar at the Temple of the Eastern Peak at night. On the thirteenth day of the first month, he roamed the city, watching the townsfolk erect lantern sheds and hang lanterns. As he looked on, he spotted Xie Zhen and Xie Bao carrying game through the streets, also taking in the sights; then he ran into Du Qian and Song Wan coming out of a pleasure quarter. That same day Shi Qian first made a reconnaissance of the Tower of Azure Clouds, where he saw Kong Ming with disheveled hair, wearing a tattered sheepskin robe, a staff in his right hand and a bowl in his left—dirty and unkempt, begging. Catching sight of Shi Qian, he signaled him to come speak behind the building. Shi Qian said, "Brother, a man like you with such a ruddy, fair complexion doesn't look like a beggar. There are many constables in the capital. If they see through you, it will ruin our great enterprise. You should hide and keep out of the way." Before he could finish, another beggar came from beside the wall—it was Kong Liang. Shi Qian said, "Brother, you've shown a face as white as snow—you don't look like someone who goes hungry either. This sort of appearance is bound to give you away." No sooner had he spoken than two men seized them from behind, crying, "You've been up to something!" He turned to see Yang Xiong and Liu Tang. Shi Qian gasped, "You nearly frightened me to death!" Yang Xiong said, "Come with me, all of you." He led them to a secluded spot and scolded them, "You three have no sense at all—how could you talk out in the open like that! If it hadn't been for the two of us spotting you, and some sharp-eyed constable had seen through you, wouldn't that have ruined our chief's great plan? We've already found you. The rest of you must not go out on the streets again." Kong Ming said, "Zou Yuan and Zou Run are selling lanterns in the city, and Lu Zhishen and Wu Song are already at a temple outside the walls. No more needs to be said—each of us will simply carry out his task when the time comes." The five men spoke their piece and departed, coming to a temple where they ran into a Daoist priest emerging from within. They looked up and recognized "Cloud-Dragon in the Sky" Gongsun Sheng, with Ling Zhen disguised as a Daoist boy behind him. The seven men exchanged meaningful glances and went their separate ways.
As the Lantern Festival drew near, Liang Shizhong first ordered the great-sword general Wen Da to lead troops out of the city and encamp at Flying Tiger Valley to guard against bandits. On the fourteenth, he ordered "Heavenly King" Li Cheng to personally lead five hundred armored cavalry, fully equipped, to patrol around the city walls. The next day was the fifteenth of the first month—the Lantern Festival. The weather was splendidly clear. As dusk fell and the moon rose, the six great thoroughfares and three great markets, every ward and alleyway, lit their lanterns. The streets and lanes were alive with folk performances. A poem bears witness:
The splendor of the capital on the fifteenth,
After sweet rain, spring's warmth comes early.
A city that knows not night, with flowery lamps like trees,
The land itself gives birth to the Isle of the Blest.
The Candle Dragon bears the torch, cold light of night,
The people sing and dance, rejoicing in peaceful times.
Five phoenixes support twin jade gates,
Six giant turtles bear three sacred mountains on their backs.
Fair ladies stand beneath crimson screens,
Pale-faced youths ride dusky rosy steeds.
Flutes and lutes rise shruling into the blue clouds,
Clear moonlight shines upon the mandarin-tile eaves.
The Tower of Azure Clouds rises high into the azure sky,
Thronged with revelers, many a lovely maid.
Lantern spheres glow brilliant as brocade and embroidery,
Noble sons and lords are truly immortals.
The visitors, mingling thick, have not yet dispersed,
When in an instant the high tower is wreathed in smoke and flame.
That night the jailer Cai Fu instructed his younger brother Cai Qing, "Watch the prison—I'm going home for a look and will return shortly." He had barely stepped through his door when two men slipped in—the one in front dressed as an officer, the one behind in the manner of a servant. By lamplight Cai Fu recognized the front man as "Little Whirlwind" Chai Jin, and the one behind as "Iron Whistle" Le He. Cai Fu knew Chai Jin and invited them inside. With food and drink already prepared, he promptly served them. Chai Jin said, "No need for wine. I've come on urgent business to ask a favor: Lu the员外 and Shi Xiu have received your kind care—words cannot express our thanks. Tonight I wish to go into the prison to see them during the Lantern Festival festivities. I ask you to arrange for me to be admitted. Please don't refuse." Cai Fu was a man of the law and had already guessed eight parts of the truth. Yet if he refused, he feared the city would be destroyed and all would be lost—and his whole family's lives would be forfeit. He could only shoulder the risk of a bloodbath, took out some old clothes, had the two men change into them, dressed as officials with new headcloths, and led Chai Jin and Le He straight into the prison.
Around the first watch, Wang the Dwarf and "Sturdy Qing," Sun New and Gu Sao, Zhang Qing and Sun Erniang—three pairs of country folk—painted up and disguised as villagers, mingled into the crowd and entered through the East Gate. Gongsun Sheng, with Ling Zhen, carried a basket of thorns and sat down in the corridor of the City God's Temple. (This temple stood right beside the prefectural yamen.) Zou Yuan and Zou Run carried lanterns and strolled through the city. Du Qian and Song Wan each pushed a cart straight to the front of Liang Shizhong's yamen, hiding among the bustling crowd. (The yamen was on the great street inside the East Gate.) Liu Tang and Yang Xiong each carried a water-and-fire cudgel, with concealed weapons on their persons, and took their seats on either side of the prefectural bridge. Yan Qing led Zhang Shun into the city through the water gate and lay in ambush in a quiet spot. No more need be said of these.
Not long after, the drum on the tower struck the second watch. Now it must be told that Shi Qian was carrying a basket filled with sulfur, saltpeter, and other fire-starting materials, with several sprays of noisy willow flowers stuck on top. He slipped in behind the Emerald Cloud Tower and went upstairs. Inside the private chambers he could hear the playing of flutes and reed pipes, the beating of drums and clappers, and the uproarious revelry of young gentlemen making merry and raising a racket, all gathered on the tower to enjoy the lanterns. Shi Qian went up and pretended to be selling the noisy willow flowers, looking into each private chamber. He ran into Zhen Bao and Bao Zhen, dragging steel tridents from which hung rabbits, circling before the chambers. Shi Qian said, "The watch has arrived—why don't we see any movement outside?" Zhen Bao said, "We were just out front and saw scouts pass by. The troops have most likely arrived. You go ahead and carry out your task." He had barely finished speaking when shouting broke out before the tower: "The Liangshan Marsh troops have arrived outside the West Gate!" Zhen Bao told Shi Qian, "Go quickly on your own—I'll go to the Vice-Governor's yamen to meet them." He rushed to the Vice-Governor's yamen, where defeated soldiers were pouring into the city, saying, "The Grand Marshal has had his camp overrun! The Liangshan bandits have led their troops all the way to the city walls." Li Cheng was patrolling on the city wall when he heard this. He galloped to the Vice-Governor's yamen, ordered the troops to assemble, commanded that the city gates be shut, and set about defending the prefecture.
Now it must be told that Prefect Wang was personally leading over a hundred attendants, wearing heavy cangues and iron chains, patrolling the streets to maintain order. When he heard the report, he hurried in alarm to the Vice-Governor's yamen.
Now it must be told that Liang Shizhong was sitting idly in his yamen, still half drunk. When he first heard the report, he was not yet terribly alarmed. But before half a watch had passed, swift scouts came in one after another with fresh reports. Terrified out of his wits, he hastily called for his horse to be saddled.
He had not finished speaking when flames suddenly shot skyward from the Emerald Cloud Tower, the fire so brilliant it outshone the moon—a truly magnificent blaze. Liang Shizhong saw it and quickly mounted his horse. Just as he was about to go and investigate, two large men pushed two carts into the roadway, took down lanterns from their hooks, and lit the carts on fire. When Liang Shizhong tried to go out the East Gate, the two men shouted, "Li Ying and Jie Jin are here!" They grasped their broad sabers and advanced with great strides. The gate guards fled in terror, and over ten of those nearby were wounded. Du Qian and Song Wan emerged at just that moment. The four joined forces and held the East Gate. Liang Shizhong, seeing the situation was hopeless, led his attendants and fled toward the South Gate. At the South Gate it was reported: "A fat great monk swinging an iron staff, and a tiger-faced itinerant monk drawing twin sabers, shouting and fighting their way into the city." Liang Shizhong turned his horse and went back to the Vice-Governor's yamen, only to find Zhen Bao and Bao Zhen there with their steel tridents, charging about in all directions. He wanted to return to the prefectural yamen but dared not go near it. Just then Prefect Wang came along. Liu Tang and Yang Xiong brought their water-and-fire clubs down together, smashing his brains out and bursting his eyes from their sockets—he died in the street. The guards and escorts all fled for their lives. Liang Shizhong hastily turned his horse and galloped to the West Gate, where he heard cannons thundering from the City God Temple, shaking heaven and earth. Zou Yuan and Zou Run, carrying bamboo poles, set fires beneath the eaves of every house. Before the South Tile Kiln, Wang Ying and "Tall Qing" came charging to the attack. Sun Xin and Gu Dasao drew hidden weapons from their persons and lent their aid there. Before the Bronze Buddha Temple, Zhang Qing and Sun Erniang went in and climbed the ceremonial mound, setting fires there. By this time, the common people of Dijing—every one of them scurrying like rats and running like wolves—every household wailing like ghosts and howling like demons—fires blazing skyward in a dozen places, and one could not tell east from west in any direction.
Now it must be told that Liang Shizhong galloped to the West Gate, joined up with Li Cheng's troops, and hastened to the South Gate tower. He reined in his horse and watched from the drum tower. Below, the city was filled with troops, and on their banners was written: "General Huyan Zhuo." In the fiery light, he brimmed with martial spirit and displayed his valor. On his left was Han Tao, on his right Peng Qi, with Huang Xin behind them, driving their troops forward in a wedge formation to attack, arriving at the gate. Liang Shizhong could not get out of the city. He and Li Cheng hid beneath the North Gate wall. In the bright firelight they saw troops beyond counting—it was "Leopard Head" Lin Chong, galloping with spear leveled, Ma Lin on his left, Deng Fei on his right, Hua Rong behind, spurring his men forward in a flying charge. They turned again to the East Gate, where amid a mass of torches they saw "No Obstacle" Mu Hong, Du Xing on his left, Zheng Tianshou on his right—three valiant infantry heroes leading the way, grasping broad sabers, leading over a thousand men into the city. Liang Shizhong made straight for the South Gate, fighting desperately to break through. At the drawbridge, torches blazed on all sides—it was "Black Whirlwind" Li Kui, with Li Li on his left and Cao Zheng on his right. Li Kui was stripped bare to the waist, his teeth clenched, twin axes in hand, charging flying from the moat. Li Li and Cao Zheng arrived together. Li Cheng led the way, hacking out a bloody path and breaking out of the city, protecting Liang Shizhong as they fled. Then from the left came a deafening roar and amid the torches appeared countless troops—it was Guan Sheng the Great Blade, spurring his Red Hare horse and brandishing his Green Dragon saber, making straight for Liang Shizhong. Li Cheng raised his two blades to meet him. But by now Li Cheng had no will to fight—he wheeled his horse and fled. On his left came Xuan Zan, on his right Hao Siwen, crashing in from both flanks. Sun Li was behind, driving his troops forward in a combined assault. In the midst of the fighting, "Little Li Guang" Hua Rong came up from behind, drew his bow, nocked an arrow, and shot Li Cheng's lieutenant, who toppled from his horse. Li Cheng saw this and fled at full gallop. Before he had gone half an arrow's flight, from the right came the wild beating of gongs and drums and a blinding glare of fire—it was "Fire Bolt" Qin Ming, leaping on horseback and swinging his staff, leading Shun Yan and Ou Peng; behind them Yang Zhi came charging as well. Li Cheng fought as he fled, losing more than half his troops, shielding Liang Shizhong as they broke free and escaped.
The narrative now branches to relate events within the city. Du Qian and Song Wan set out to slaughter the entire household—both the decent folk and the servants—of Liang Zhongshu. Liu Tang and Yang Xiong went to kill the whole family of Prefect Wang. Kong Ming and Kong Liang had already climbed over the back wall of the prison warden's office. Zou Yuan and Zou Run stood guard at the front, intercepting anyone who came or went. Inside the great jail, Chai Jin and Le He saw the signal fire rise and said to Cai Fu and Cai Qing, "Have you two brothers seen it or not? How much longer will you wait?" Cai Qing was peering by the door when Zou Yuan and Zou Run already burst through the prison gate and shouted, "The heroes of Liangshan Marsh are all here! Send out Master Lu and Brother Shi Xiu, and be quick about it!" In a panic, Cai Qing ran to inform Cai Fu, but Kong Ming and Kong Liang had already dropped down from above into the jailhouse. Whether the two brothers were willing or not, Chai Jin produced tools from his side, broke open the cangues, and freed Lu Junyi and Shi Xiu. Chai Jin said to Cai Fu, "Come with me quickly and protect your household." They all emerged from the prison gate together. Zou Yuan and Zou Run met up with them, and the whole party joined forces. Cai Fu and Cai Qing followed Chai Jin to his home to safeguard his family.
Lu Junyi led Shi Xiu, Kong Ming, Kong Liang, Zou Yuan, and Zou Run straight to his house, intending to seize Li Gu and Lady Jia. Now Li Gu had heard that the heroes of Liangshan Marsh had led troops into the city, and seeing fires breaking out on every side, he felt a twitching in his eye. He discussed the matter with Lady Jia, packed a bundle of gold, pearls, and valuables, and set out through the front door. All along the street, doors were being knocked down—he had no idea how many people were pouring in. Li Gu and Lady Jia hurriedly turned back, opened the rear gate inside, slipped past the wall, and made their way to the riverbank to reach their hiding place. On the shore, Zhang Shun shouted loudly, "Where is that woman off to?" Li Gu, terrified, jumped into a boat to hide. As he was trying to squeeze into the cabin, a hand reached out and seized him by the whisker-like hair, shouting, "Li Gu, do you know who I am?" Li Gu recognized it was Yan Qing's voice and cried out in panic, "Xiao Yi, I have no quarrel with you—don't drag me ashore!" On the bank, Zhang Shun had already tucked the woman under his arm and hauled her to the boat. Yan Qing seized Li Gu, and they all headed toward the East Gate.
Meanwhile, Lu Junyi rushed home only to find that Li Gu and the woman had vanished. He ordered the others to gather all his household's gold, silver, and treasures, load them onto carts, and distribute them at Liangshan Marsh. Chai Jin and Cai Fu, having gathered his family and belongings, set out together for the stronghold. Cai Fu said, "Great sir, you can save the people of this city from slaughter." Hearing this, Chai Jin went in search of the Military Advisor Wu Yong. By the time Chai Jin found Wu Yong and hastily issued the order not to harm the common folk, the city had already suffered nearly half its damage. For behold:
Smoke engulfed the city, flames devoured the towers.
Amid the red light, shattered glass; among the dark fires, burning jade.
The puppets that delighted the crowds cared nothing for which face was turned forward;
The lantern-lit festival sheds took no heed of what was bright before and dark behind.
Bearded old men, their white whiskers singed away in the fierce blaze;
Young lads with dark hair, scattering without gathering their ornate parasols.
Those riding bamboo horses in the dark—swords and spears found them;
Those dancing the Elder Bao—halberds and lances could not be avoided.
Fair ladies among the crowd, their gold and jade pins crumbling;
Pleasure-seeking beauties, in a moment scattered like stars and clouds.
Alas—a thousand-year playground of song and dance became in an instant a battlefield.
When daylight fully broke, Wu Yong and Chai Jin sounded the gong to recall the troops within the city. The other chiefs met up with Lu Junyi and Shi Xiu and all went to the vice-governor's office to confer. They reported that in the jail, they owed their lives to the care of the brothers Cai Fu and Cai Qing, and that they had barely escaped with their lives. Yan Qing and Zhang Shun had already brought Li Gu and Lady Jia as prisoners. When Lu Junyi saw them, he ordered Yan Qing to hold them in custody under guard, to await judgment. But no more of this.
Now, Li Cheng escorted Liang Zhongshu out of the city to flee, and they encountered Wen Da leading the remnants of his defeated troops. Joining forces, they fled southward. As they marched, the vanguard raised a shout—it was樊瑞 the Demon King of Chaos, with Xiang Chong on his left and Li Gun on his right. These three infantry heroes brandished their flying knives and flying spears, charging straight at them. Behind them came插翅虎 Lei Heng, leading Shi En and Mu Chun, each with a thousand foot soldiers, cutting off their retreat. Truly it was as when a prisoner meets a pardon and returns to the cells, or a sick man finds a physician and climbs once more to the bed. How did Liang Zhongshu and his party resolve their predicament? Listen to the next chapter.
