Xiao Luo, Xiangling, Fangguan, Ruiguan, Ouguan, Douguan and four or five others had been playing around the garden for a while. They had gathered some flowers and grasses, and were sitting among the pile of them, playing the game of "fighting grass." One said, "I'll match my Guanyin willow." Another said, "I've got my Luohan pine." Another said, "I've got my gentleman bamboo." Another said, "I've got my beauty banana." This one said, "I've got my starry green." That one said, "I've got my monthly red." This one said, "I've got the peony from The Peony Pavilion." That one said, "I've got the loquat fruit from The Tale of the Pipa." Douguan said, "I've got the sister flower." The others had nothing to say, so Xiangling said, "I've got the husband-and-wife orchid." Douguan said, "I've never heard of a husband-and-wife orchid." Xiangling said, "A single stalk with one flower is a lan; a single stalk with several flowers is a hui. All hui have two branches. When they have flowers joined above and below, it's called a brother hui. When they have flowers joined side by side at the top, it's called a husband-and-wife orchid. Mine is joined at the top, so why isn't it?" Douguan had nothing to say, so she stood up and laughed, "According to you, if one branch is big and the other small, it would be a father-and-son hui. If the two branches face away from each other, it would be an enemy hui. Your husband's been gone for more than half a year. Do you miss being a wife? You even drag the orchid into having a husband and wife. Aren't you ashamed!" Xiangling blushed and quickly stood up to pinch her, cursing with a laugh, "You little foul-mouthed bitch! All that nonsense pouring out of your mouth. When I get up, I'll beat you to death, you little bitch!" Douguan, seeing her try to get up, wouldn't let her, and quickly threw her whole body on top of her, pinning her down. She turned her head and laughingly begged Ruiguan and the others, "Come here, help me pinch this lying mouth." The two of them rolled on the grassy ground. Everyone clapped their hands and laughed, "This is too much! That's a puddle of water—what a pity to dirty her new skirt." Douguan turned to look and indeed saw a pool of rainwater nearby. Half of Xiangling's skirt was soaked with dirt. Embarrassed, she quickly let go and ran away. Everyone couldn't stop laughing. Afraid Xiangling would take it out on them, they all scattered with laughter. Xiangling stood up and looked down. Greenish water was still dripping from her skirt. She was in the middle of cursing when Baoyu happened to see them playing the grass-fighting game and had also gathered some flowers and grasses to join in. Suddenly he saw everyone run away, leaving only Xiangling standing there fussing over her skirt. He asked, "Why did you all scatter?" Xiangling said, "I had a husband-and-wife orchid. They didn't understand and said I was making it up. So a fight broke out, and my new skirt got dirty." Baoyu laughed, "You have a husband-and-wife orchid, but I here have a twin-seed water caltrop." As he spoke, he was actually holding a twin-seed water caltrop flower in his hand, and he also took the husband-and-wife orchid in his other hand. Xiangling said, "What husband-and-wife, what twin-seed or not—look at this skirt." Baoyu just then looked down and gave an exclamation, "How did it get dragged in the mud? This pomegranate-red silk is the hardest to keep clean." Xiangling said, "Miss Qin sent this the other day. She made one, and I made one. I just put it on today." Baoyu stamped his feet and sighed, "If it were your family, ruining a hundred pieces a day wouldn't matter. But since the first piece was brought by Miss Qin, and you and Miss Bao each only have one—hers is still fine, but yours got dirty first. That would be letting her down. Second, Aunt Xue is a bit nagging. Even so, I often hear her say you don't know how to live properly and only know how to ruin things, not knowing how to treasure your blessings. If Aunt Xue sees this, there'll be no end to it." When Xiangling heard these words, they struck a chord in her heart, and she felt pleased instead. She laughed, "That's exactly right. Although I have several new skirts, none are like this one. If there were another like it, I could quickly change into it, and that would be fine. We'll deal with it later." Baoyu said, "Don't move quickly. You'd better stand still, otherwise even your underpants, knee bands, and shoes will get dragged in the dirt. I have an idea: Xiren made one exactly like this last month. But because she's in mourning, she's not wearing it now. Why don't I have her give it to you to change into? What do you think?" Xiangling smiled and shook her head, "That's not good. If they hear about it, it won't be good." Baoyu said, "What's there to fear? After their mourning period is over, if she likes something, wouldn't she let you give her something else? If you act like this, it's still being your usual self! Besides, it's not something to hide. You can even tell Miss Bao. I'm only afraid Aunt Xue might get angry." Xiangling thought about it and saw the sense in it, so she nodded and smiled, "All right then, let's do it that way. Don't let your good intentions go to waste. I'll be waiting for you. Make sure she brings it herself." Baoyu was overjoyed when he heard this. He agreed and hurried back. As he walked, he was secretly thinking to himself, "What a pity about this person—no parents, has even forgotten her own original surname, was kidnapped and sold to this tyrant." He also thought about how Ping'er the other day was unexpectedly unexpected, and today was even more unexpectedly unexpected. As his thoughts wandered, he came to the room and pulled Xiren aside, telling her the whole story in detail. As for Xiangling's character, there was no one who didn't feel sorry for her. Xiren was naturally generous with her hands, and she had always been on good terms with Xiangling. Upon hearing this, she quickly opened the chest, took it out, folded it properly, and followed Baoyu to find Xiangling, who was still standing there waiting. Xiren laughed, "I say you're too naughty—you've really outdone yourself this time."

Chapter 62: Tipsy Xiangyun Sleeps Among the Peonies; Foolish Xiangling Unties Her Pomegranate-Red Skirt
Ping'er came out and instructed Lin Zhixia's wife, "A great family is one that turns big matters into small ones and small matters into nothing at all. If the slightest trifle is seized upon to create a great uproar with bells and drums, that is not the way of reason. Now take these mother and daughter back and let them resume their duties as before. Send Qin Xian's wife back to where she came from. Let no more be said about this matter. What matters is that you keep a careful watch every day." With that, she rose and left. The mother and daughter of the Liu family kowtowed hastily, and the Lin women took them back to the garden, where they reported to Li Wan and Tanchun. Both said, "We know. It's good that nothing came of it." Siqi and the others had their excitement for nothing. Qin Xian's wife had waited so long for this opening and had only enjoyed her triumph for half a day. In the kitchen, she was in the midst of receiving utensils, rice, coal, and other supplies when many shortfalls were discovered. "Two dan of polished rice are missing," they said. "The regular rice has been drawn a month in advance, and the coal is short of the quota." At the same time, she prepared a gift for Lin Zhixia's wife—secretly setting aside a basket of charcoal, five hundred catties of firewood, and a load of polished rice, which she had her nephews deliver to the Lin household from outside. She also prepared a gift for the accountants' office and readied several dishes to invite a few colleagues. "Now that I'm here, I rely entirely on all of you for support. From now on we are all one family. Where I fall short, please look after things for me." Just as she was busy with all this, someone came and told her, "After you've seen to this morning's meal, you may leave. Sister Liu was never at fault, and the kitchen is being returned to her." When Qin Xian's wife heard this, her soul fled from her body. Crestfallen and dejected, she immediately struck her colors and packed her bags to leave. The gifts she had prepared were all wasted, and she herself had to sell things to make up the shortfall. Even Siqi was furious, but there was nothing to be done, and she had to let it go.
Aunt Zhao had been worried because Caiyun had secretly given Jia Huan many things, which Yuchuan had exposed. She lived in daily fear that an investigation would uncover it. Suddenly Caiyun came to tell her, "Baoyu has taken responsibility for it all. There's no more trouble." Only then did Aunt Zhao set her mind at rest. But when Jia Huan heard this, he grew suspicious. He took out everything Caiyun had secretly given him and threw it in her face, saying, "You two-faced, three-knived creature! I have no use for this. If you weren't intimate with Baoyu, why would he have taken responsibility for you? If you had the nerve to give these things to me, you should have kept it from everyone. Now that you've told him, I'd have no pleasure in keeping them anyway." Seeing him like this, Caiyun was frantic—she swore oaths and wept, explaining in every way she could, but Jia Huan stubbornly refused to believe her. "Were it not for our past relationship, I would go and tell Second Sister-in-law that you stole these things and gave them to me, and that I don't dare keep them. Think carefully about that." With that, he flung his hand and walked out. Aunt Zhao, frantic, cursed him: "Worm of a spawn! Heart of maggots, scourge of a creature!" Caiyun was so angry she wept until her tears ran dry and her heart broke. Aunt Zhao comforted her in every way: "Good child, he has betrayed my heart, and I see it clearly. Let me keep these things for you. In a couple of days he'll naturally come around." As she spoke, she began to gather the things up. Caiyun, in a fit of pique, bundled them all up at once. When no one was looking, she went into the garden and threw them all into the river—some sank, some floated away on the current. That night she wept secretly under her quilt in her anger.
Now it happened that Baoyu's birthday had arrived, and it turned out that Baochai's younger cousin Baoqin also shared the same birthday. Since Lady Wang was not at home, the celebration was not as lively as in previous years. The Taoist priest Zhang had sent four gifts, along with a talisman for his adopted name, and monks and nuns from several temples had sent offerings of food, paper images of the Star of Longevity, memorial scrolls, and locks exchanged for the year's guardian star. The blind female entertainers who regularly visited the house came to offer birthday congratulations. From Prince Teng's household came a set of clothes, a pair of shoes and socks, a hundred longevity peaches, and a hundred bundles of fine silver-thread noodles for imperial use. Aunt Xue's gifts were one grade lower. From the others in the household, Madam You sent a pair of shoes and socks, and Xifeng sent an embroidered palace-style purse with images of the Four Harmonies on its four sides, containing a golden Star of Longevity and a curiosity from Persia. People were sent to various temples to distribute money on behalf of the celebrants. There were also gifts for Baoqin, too many to recount. Among the young ladies, each gave something casually—a painted fan, a piece of calligraphy, a painting, or a poem—just enough to mark the occasion.
That morning, Baoyu rose early, washed and dressed, and came out in his cap and sash. In the front courtyard, Li Gui and four or five others had already set out incense and candles for heaven and earth. Baoyu lit the incense, performed the rites, offered tea, and burned paper offerings. Then he went to the Ning Mansion to pay his respects at the ancestral hall and the hall of the ancestors. After finishing the rites at both places, he went out to the terrace and bowed from afar to Grandmother Jia, Jia Zheng, Lady Wang, and the others. He then went in order to Madam You's quarters, paid his respects, sat for a while, and returned to the Rong Mansion. He first went to Aunt Xue's rooms, where she insisted on holding him back, and then he met Xue Ke, who yielded the way to him, before he entered the garden. Qingwen and Sheyue accompanied him, with a little maid carrying a felt mat. Starting with Li Wan, they went in order to each of the older ladies' rooms. Then they went out through the second gate and paid their respects at the homes of the four wet nurses—Li, Zhao, Zhang, and Wang—before coming back inside. Though everyone wanted to perform formal bows, he did not accept them. When he returned to his own room, Xiren and the others merely came to offer their congratulations. Lady Wang had given instructions that young people should not receive formal birthday bows, lest it diminish their fortune and longevity, so no one kowtowed.
After a short while, Jia Huan and Jia Lan arrived. Xiren quickly pulled them over, and they sat for a moment before leaving. Baoyu laughed and said he was tired from walking, then sprawled across the bed. He had barely drunk half a cup of tea when he heard a chattering outside, and a group of maidservants came laughing in. It was Cui Mo, Xiao Luo, Cui Lü, Ru Hua, Xing Xiuyan's maid Zhuan'er, along with the nurse carrying Sister Qiao, Cai Luan, Xiu Luan—eight or nine people in all, all carrying red felt and laughing as they came in, saying, "The birthday callers have broken down the door! Hurry and bring us noodles to eat!" Just as they entered, Tanchun, Xiangyun, Baoqin, Xiuqi, and Xichun also arrived. Baoyu hurried out to greet them, laughing, "I dare not trouble you—quick, prepare good tea." They entered the room, where they exchanged the usual courtesies before settling into their seats. Xiren and the others served the tea, and they had just taken a moment to drink when Ping'er arrived, dressed up splendidly. Baoyu hurried out to greet her, laughing, "I just went to Sister Feng's gate and was told she had gone back inside—I couldn't see her. I even sent someone in again to pay my respects to you." Ping'er smiled, "I was just having your sister's hair dressed and couldn't come out to receive you. Then later I heard you'd asked for me too—how could I possibly deserve that? So I rushed over to kowtow." Baoyu laughed, "I can't possibly deserve it either." Xiren had already set up a seat in the outer room and urged her to sit. Ping'er curtseyed, and Baoyu made bow after bow in return. Ping'er knelt down, and Baoyu quickly knelt as well. Xiren rushed over and helped them both up. Ping'er curtseyed again, and Baoyu returned another bow. Xiren laughingly nudged Baoyu, "Bow again!" Baoyu said, "That's already done—why bow again?" Xiren smiled, "She's here to wish you a happy birthday. Today is her birthday too—you should be wishing her a happy birthday." Baoyu, delighted, immediately bowed deeply and said, "So today is Sister's birthday too!" Ping'er curtseyed again and again. Xiangyun pulled Baoqin and Xiuqi aside, saying, "You four should exchange birthday greetings—you'd be at it all day." Tanchun quickly asked, "So Sister Xing's birthday is today too? I completely forgot!" She ordered a maid, "Go tell Second Sister Feng to hastily prepare a gift, the same as Sister Qin's, and send it to Second Sister's rooms." The maid assented and left. Xiuqi, seeing Xiangyun speak so directly, felt she had to go around to each room to pay her respects. Tanchun laughed, "This is rather amusing. Twelve months in a year, and every month has several birthdays. With so many people, there are bound to be such coincidences—three sharing one day, two sharing another. Even the first day of the New Year isn't wasted—Elder Sister claimed it. No wonder she's so blessed—her birthday takes precedence. It's also the birthday of the Great Ancestor. After the Lantern Festival, it's Grandmother and Sister Bao's turn—the two of them happen to coincide. The first day of the third month is Mother's; the ninth day is Brother Lian's. No one in the second month." Xiren said, "The twelfth of the second month is Miss Lin's. How can you say no one? It's just that she isn't one of our family." Tanchun laughed, "What's happened to my memory?" Baoyu pointed at Xiren and laughed, "She shares a birthday with Cousin Lin, that's why she remembers." Tanchun laughed, "So you two actually share a birthday too. Every year you don't even kowtow to us once. We didn't know about Ping'er's birthday either—we only just found out." Ping'er smiled, "We're not the sort of people whose names are on the register—we have no fortune in receiving birthday greetings, no standing to accept gifts. Why make a fuss? Better to let it pass quietly. Today he just had to make a noise about it. Once the young ladies return to your rooms, I'll come and pay my respects." Tanchun laughed, "I wouldn't presume to disturb you. But today I really must celebrate your birthday—only then will I feel at peace about it." Baoyu, Xiangyun, and the others all agreed, "Quite right." Tanchun ordered a maid, "Go tell your mistress that we've all said we won't let Ping'er leave today—we're all contributing to celebrate her birthday." The maid went off laughing and returned after a while, saying, "Second Sister Feng says, thank you, young ladies, for giving her face. She asks what you'd like to eat for the birthday celebration—just don't forget Second Sister Feng, and she won't pester you." Everyone laughed. Tanchun then said, "As it happens, the inner kitchen isn't preparing meals today—all the noodle-making and cooking is being handled outside. Let's pool our money and ask Mrs. Liu to take it over—we'll just have it prepared in our own quarters." Everyone agreed it was an excellent idea. Tanchun sent someone to ask Li Wan, Baochai, and Daiyu, and also sent for Mrs. Liu, ordering her to quickly prepare two tables of feast in the inner kitchen. Mrs. Liu didn't understand and said the outer kitchen had already made preparations. Tanchun laughed, "You didn't know—today is Sister Ping's birthday. The outer kitchen's preparations are for the senior family members. Now we've privately pooled our money to prepare two tables just for Sister Ping. Just pick the most novel and skillful dishes and prepare them, then present the bill to me for payment." Mrs. Liu smiled, "So today is also Sister Ping's birthday—I had no idea." She knelt down to kowtow to Ping'er, who hastily pulled her up. Mrs. Liu hurried off to prepare the feast.
Here Tanchun invited Baoyu to go to the hall together to eat noodles. Once Li Wan and Baochai had all arrived, she sent for Xue Mama and Daiyu. Because the weather was warm, Daiyu's illness had gradually improved, so she came too. A profusion of flowers and brocade filled the hall with a crowd of people.
It happened that Xue Ke had also sent four kinds of birthday gifts—towels, fans, incense, and silk—to Baoyu, so Baoyu went over to keep him company while he ate noodles. Both households had prepared birthday wine and exchanged presents with each other, each accepting the other's offerings. By midday, Baoyu again kept Xue Ke company for two cups of wine. Baochai brought Baoqin over to pay her respects to Xue Ke; after the formal toast, Baochai instructed Xue Ke: "There's no need to send any wine over to the other household either. You can dispense with such empty formalities. Just invite the clerks to drink. We and Cousin Bao still have people to attend to inside, so we can't keep you company." Xue Ke hastily said, "Sister and brother, please go ahead without ceremony. The clerks will probably be arriving soon anyway." Baoyu quickly took his leave, then returned with his cousins.
As soon as they passed through the corner gate, Baochai ordered the old serving-woman to lock it and took the key herself. Baoyu said hastily, "Why bother closing this gate? Not many people use it anyway. Besides, Aunt, Elder Sister, and Younger Sister are all inside. If anyone needs to go home to fetch something, wouldn't it be troublesome?" Baochai smiled and said: "It's always better to be too careful than not careful enough. Look at your side these days—one thing after another has happened, yet none of our people over here have been involved. That shows the gate has been effective locked. If it were left open, those people might take the shortcut and stroll through here on their way somewhere, and who would stop them? Better to lock it. Even Mother and I will restrain ourselves and not go through. If anything happens, they won't be able to implicate anyone on our side." Baoyu smiled and said: "So Elder Sister knows that things have been lost on our side these days too?" Baochai smiled and said: "You only know about the two incidents involving rose-flavored dew and poria powder, and those were traced back to people before the objects were discovered. If not for the people involved, you wouldn't even have known about those two cases. You have no idea there are several matters even graver than these. If they are never brought to light, it will be everyone's good fortune. But if they come out, who knows how many people will be implicated. Since you're not someone who manages affairs, I'm telling you this. Ping'er is a sensible person—I told her the other day as well, precisely because her mistress is away, so she should be clear on things. If nothing comes of it, everyone can happily wash their hands of it. If it does come out, she already has the full picture in her mind and knows how the threads connect, so innocent people won't be wronged. Just remember what I've said: be careful from now on. Don't mention this to anyone else."
As they spoke, they arrived at the banks of the Seeping Fragrance Pavilion, where they found a dozen or so people—Xiren, Xiangling, Daishu, Suyun, Qingwen, Sheyue, Fangguan, Ruiguan, and Ouguan—all amusing themselves watching the fish. Seeing them arrive, they all said: "Everything is ready in the Peony Arbor—hurry along to your seats." Baochai and the others gathered them up and went together to the three small open-fronted halls of the Red Fragrance Garden in the Peony Arbor. Even Madam You had already been invited and had arrived; everyone was there except Ping'er.
The reason was that when Ping'er had gone out, the Lai and Lin families and others had sent gifts, and one after another, not a few servants of the upper, middle, and lower ranks had come to pay their respects and present birthday offerings. Ping'er was busy distributing tips and expressing thanks, at the same time reporting every item in detail to Xifeng—keeping some items, declining others, and giving away on the spot some of those she did accept. After a flurry of activity, she waited until Xifeng had finished her noodles before changing her clothes and heading to the garden.
No sooner had she entered the garden than several maids came looking for her, and together they all went to Red Fragrance Garden. There the tables were spread with tortoiseshell mats and the cushions with hibiscus flowers. Everyone laughed and said, "All the birthday people are here now!" The four seats of honor at the top were reserved for the four of them, but none of them would sit down. Aunt Xue said, "I'm old and decrepit—I don't fit in with your young crowd. I'd feel constrained. I'd rather go to the main hall and lie down wherever I please. I can't eat much, and I don't drink much wine either. You'd all be better off without me there." But Madam You and the others insisted on her staying. Baochai said, "Since that's how it is, let Mother recline in the main hall where she'll be more comfortable. If there's anything she likes to eat, we can send it over. Besides, there's no one in the front hall, and she can keep an eye on things there." Tanchun and the others laughed and said, "In that case, obedience is better than politeness." So they escorted Aunt Xue to the council hall, where they personally directed the maids to spread a brocade cushion along with a backrest and bolster, and gave strict orders: "Massage the old lady's legs properly, and don't make excuses when she asks for tea or water. When we send things over and she eats her share, she'll let you have the rest. Just don't wander off from here." The little maids all promised, and only then did Tanchun and the others return. In the end, they let Baoqin and Xiangyan take the two seats above, with Ping'er facing west and Baoyu facing east. Tanchun also brought over Yuanyang, and the two of them sat side by side facing each other. At the west table sat Baochai, Daiyu, Xiangyun, Yingchun, and Xichun, with Xiangling and Yuchuan pulled in to sit across. At the third tables, Madam You and Li Wan had pulled in Xiren and Caiyun to sit with them. At the fourth table sat Zijuan, Ying'er, Qingwen, Xiaoluo, Siqi, and the others gathered around. Just as Tanchun and the others were about to propose toasts, Baoqin and the other four protested, "If we carry on like this, we won't be able to sit down all day!" So they stopped. Two female storytellers came forward to sing a birthday song, but everyone said, "We don't want to hear such nonsense. Go to the hall and entertain Old Lady Xue instead." At the same time, they selected various delicacies and had them sent over to Aunt Xue. Then Baoyu said, "Sitting politely is boring. We ought to play drinking games." Some suggested this game, others that one. Daiyu said, "In my opinion, let's take brush and ink, write all the different games on slips, fold them up, and draw lots. Whatever we pick, that's the one we play." Everyone agreed this was an excellent idea. So they brought out a set of brushes, ink, and decorated paper. Xiangling had recently been studying poetry and practiced writing every day, so when she saw the brush and ink she couldn't resist. She quickly rose from her seat and said, "I'll write." The others thought for a moment, came up with about ten games, and as they called them out, Xiangling wrote each one down. She then folded them into lots and tossed them into a vase. Tanchun told Ping'er to draw one. Ping'er stirred them around inside with her chopsticks, picked one out, and opened it. On it were written two characters: Shefu. Baochai laughed. "You've drawn the ancestor of all drinking games! Shefu has existed since ancient times but has been lost. This version was compiled by later people, and it's harder than any other game. Half the people here probably won't know how to play. Let's tear it up and draw another one that everyone can enjoy." Tanchun said with a laugh, "Now that it's been drawn, how can we destroy it? Let's draw another—if it's one everyone can enjoy, we'll have them play that one, and we'll play this one." She then had Xiren draw another slip. It read Huoquan—"Finger Guessing." Shi Xiangyun laughed and said, "That's straightforward and suits my temperament. I can't play Shefu—it would only make me hang my head and feel miserable. I'm going to go finger-guess." Tanchun said, "She's the only one who makes a racket with the rules. Sister Bao, quick—punish her with a cup." Without waiting for explanations, Baochai poured a cup of wine down Xiangyun's throat. Tanchun said, "I'll drink a cup too. I'm the game master, so there's no need for formal announcements. Just listen to my instructions." She ordered dice and a dice bowl to be brought out. "Starting with Sister Qin, everyone will take turns rolling. The two whose numbers match will play Shefu." Baoqin rolled first and got a three. Xiangyan, Baoyu, and the others all rolled the wrong number, until Xiangling rolled a three. Baoqin laughed. "We'll have to find our topic indoors—if we went outside, there'd be no end to the possibilities." Tanchun said, "Of course. Anyone who fails three times gets a penalty cup. You give the clue, she guesses." Baoqin thought for a moment and said the character lao—"old." Xiangling, who had been born into this game—that is, who was new to it—couldn't think of anything, and the whole room and table were searched for a compound word connected to lao. Xiangyun, who had heard first, began looking around wildly. Suddenly she noticed the three characters Hong Xiang Pu—"Red Fragrance Garden"—posted above the doorframe. She realized Baoqin was alluding to the pu—"garden"—from the phrase "I am not as good as an old gardener." Seeing that Xiangling couldn't guess, and with everyone drumming and urging her on, Xiangyun quietly pulled Xiangling aside and told her to say the character yao—"medicine." But Daiyu happened to see this. "Quick, punish her!" she said. "She's passing secret signals again!" The whole room burst into laughter and knew at once. They quickly imposed another penalty cup. Xiangyun was so annoyed she rapped Daiyu's hand with her chopstick. So Xiangling was made to drink a penalty cup. Next, Baochai and Tanchun's numbers matched. Tanchun gave the clue: the character ren—"person." Baochai laughed. "That character ren is too broad." Tanchun smiled. "Add one character—two clues, one guess, and it won't be too broad." She then added another character: chuang—"window." Baochai thought for a moment, and seeing a chicken on the table, she guessed that Tanchun was alluding to the two allusions "chicken window" and "chicken keeper," so she guessed the character shi—"roost." Tanchun knew she had guessed correctly, using the allusion "the chicken roosts on its perch," and the two smiled at each other and each drank a cup of the opening toast. Xiangyun couldn't wait any longer and had already started shouting "three!" and "five!" with Baoyu, finger-guessing away. Over on the other side, Madam You and Yuanyang were also shouting "seven!" and "eight!" across the table, finger-guessing. Ping'er and Xiren had paired off to finger-guesser too, clinking and clanking—
They could only hear the jangling of bracelets on wrists. Presently Xiangyun won against Baoyu, Xiren against Ping'er, You-shi against Yuanyang. The three were required to compose a drinking song with a wine line and a wine base. Xiangyun then said: "The wine line must contain one sentence of classical prose, one line of old poetry, one domino name, one tune name from opera, and one phrase from the almanac — all pieced together to form one sentence. The wine base must be the name of a fruit or vegetable connected with human affairs." When everyone heard this, they laughed and said, "Only her rules are so fussy, but they are rather amusing." They urged Baoyu to speak quickly. Baoyu smiled and said: "Whoever has done this before? Let me think for a moment." Daiyu then said: "Drink one more cup, and I'll say it for you." Baoyu actually drank the cup, and heard Daiyu say:
The evening clouds and a lone wild duck fly together, the wind is urgent over the river sky and the passing geese cry mournfully — it is but a wild duck with a broken leg, one that makes men's hearts twist with grief nine times over — this is the Wild Goose as a Guest.
Everyone laughed when they heard it and said: "This string of phrases is rather interesting." Daiyu then picked up a hazelnut and said the wine base:
The hazelnut has nothing to do with the pounding block from the next courtyard — whence comes the sound of ten thousand households beating out their clothes?
After the round, Yuanyang, Xiren, and the others all said a common saying containing the word "longevity" — no need to elaborate further.
Everyone took turns haphazardly playing the finger-guessing game for a while. On this round, Xiangyun again matched hands with Baoqin, and Li Wan matched points with Xiuyan. Li Wan then covered the character "gourd," and Xiuyan guessed the character "green." The two understood each other's meaning and each took a sip. Xiangyun, however, lost at finger-guessing and was asked for a wine line and wine base. Baoqin said with a smile: "Please enter the jar yourself." Everyone laughed and said, "This allusion is aptly used." Xiangyun then said:
Surging and crashing, the waves of the river join with the sky — one needs an iron chain to moor the lone boat — having encountered a wind on the river, it is not suitable to go out.
Everyone laughed when they heard it and said: "What a string that breaks one's guts with nonsense. No wonder she made up this rule — she deliberately wanted to make people laugh." Then they listened to her wine base. Xiangyun drank her cup, picked up a piece of duck meat and took a bite. Suddenly she noticed half a duck's head in her bowl, picked it out, and ate its brain. The others urged her: "Don't just keep eating — hurry up and say it!" Xiangyun then held it up with her chopsticks and said:
This duck head is not that girl's head — where would one find osmanthus oil on her head?
The people laughed even more, which drew over Qingwen, Xiao Luo, Ying'er, and a whole group of others, who came and said: "Miss Xiangyun knows how to have fun — she's making fun of us! Quick, she must be fined a cup. Why should we be the ones who use osmanthus oil? We ought to each get a bottle of osmanthus oil to rub on ourselves." Daiyu said with a smile: "She might have the heart to give you a bottle of oil, but she'd be afraid it would implicate her in a lawsuit for theft." The others didn't catch the meaning, but Baoyu understood and quickly lowered his head. Caiyun had a secret burden on her mind and could not help blushing. Baochai quickly gave Daiyu a sidelong glance. Daiyu regretted her slip — she had originally meant to tease Baoyu, but had forgotten that she was also teasing Caiyun. She reproached herself and quickly diverted the game by proceeding with the drinking rounds and finger-guessing.
Down the line, Baoyu happened to match points with Baochai. Baochai covered the character "bao" (precious/jewel). Baoyu thought for a moment and realized that Baochai was playfully referring to his own Precious Jade of Spiritual Understanding that he wore. He smiled and said: "Sister is making a refined jest of me, but I've guessed it. Don't be angry, Sister — it's your own name, 'chai' (hairpin)." The others said: "How is this explained?" Baoyu said: "She says 'bao,' so naturally the character underneath would be 'yu' (jade). I guessed 'chai' — there is an old line of poetry that says, 'Knocking off the jade hairpin, the red candle grows cold' — doesn't that hit the mark?" Xiangyun said: "This uses a contemporary reference and shouldn't be allowed — both should be fined." Xiangling hastily said: "Not only a contemporary reference — this also has a classical source." Xiangyun said: "The two characters 'Baoyu' have no classical source — they might appear on spring couplets, but there is no record in poetry or books, so it doesn't count." Xiangling said: "The other day I was reading Cen Jiazhou's five-character regulated verse, and there was a line that said, 'This land is rich with precious jade' — how could you have forgotten? Later I read Li Yishan's seven-character quatrain, and there was another line, 'The precious hairpin knows not a day without dust' — I even laughed and said that both their names originally come from Tang poetry." Everyone laughed and said: "That's got her cornered — quick, fine her a cup!" Xiangyun had no reply and had to drink. The others then matched points and played finger-guessing as before. Since Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang were not at home, these people had no one to restrain them, so they amused themselves as they pleased, shouting three and four, calling seven and eight. The whole hall was a whirl of crimson and emerald, of swaying jade and jingling pearls — truly a scene of great liveliness. After playing for a while, everyone rose from their seats and dispersed a bit. Suddenly Xiangyun was nowhere to be seen. They assumed she had gone outside to relieve herself and would be back at any moment, but the longer they waited, the less sign of her there was. They sent people to search everywhere, but she could not be found.
Then Lin Zhixiaojia arrived with several of the older serving women. They were anxious in case there might be some important business that required their presence, and they were also worried that the young maids, with Lady Wang away from home and no one to restrain them under Tanchun's supervision, might indulge themselves freely in drinking and lose all sense of propriety. So they came to inquire whether there was any business or not. Tanchun saw at once what was in their minds when they arrived and said with a smile, "You still don't trust us, so you've come to check up on us. We haven't been drinking too much—we've only been having fun and using wine as a pretext. Don't worry, mothers." Li Wan and Lady You both chimed in with a smile, "Go and rest. We wouldn't let them drink too much either." The women laughed and replied, "We know. Even when the Old Lady invites the young ladies to drink, they're reluctant. How much more so now, with the ladies away from home—of course they're just having fun. We came to see if there was any business, that was one reason. And then, the days are growing longer now—after the young ladies have had their fun, they ought to have something light to eat. They don't usually eat many different things, and now that they've had a couple of cups of wine, if they don't eat something more, it might do them harm." Tanchun smiled and said, "What you say is right. We were just about to eat something." She turned her head and ordered some refreshments to be brought. The maids on either side assented and went quickly to fetch them. Tanchun again said with a smile, "Go and rest, or go chat with your mistress. We'll send someone along shortly to bring you some wine." The women laughed and replied, "We daren't accept." They stood a while longer, then withdrew. Ping'er touched her face and laughed, "My face is burning. I'd be too ashamed to face them. In my opinion, we ought to stop right now. If we don't, they'll come back again, and that won't be at all pleasant." Tanchun smiled, "It doesn't matter. In any case, we're not really drinking seriously."
Just then they saw a little maid come in with a smile. "Come quickly, young ladies, and look at Miss Yun—she's drunk and fell asleep on a bluish stone bench behind the rockery, trying to cool herself." When they heard this, everyone laughed and said, "Don't make a noise." They all went to look, and sure enough, Xiangyun was lying on a stone bench in a secluded spot by the rocks, sunk in the sweet fragrance of deep slough. Peony petals had flown in from all four sides and covered her entire body—her hair, her face, and her clothes were all a riot of crimson and scattered fragrance. Her fan had fallen to the ground, half-buried by fallen petals, and a swarm of bees and butterflies were buzzing noisily around her. She had also wrapped a kerchief full of peony petals to use as a pillow. When they saw her, they were at once charmed and amused. They hurried forward to rouse and help her up. Xiangyun was still muttering drunkenly in her sleep, reciting a drinking rhyme in a murmuring voice:
"The spring is fragrant and the wine is clear,
In jade bowls it gleams like amber light,
Drink on till the plum-blossom moon climbs high,
Stagger home in a tipsy plight—
How fitting for gathering with friends so dear!"
They laughed and pushed her, saying, "Wake up quickly and go eat. You'll catch an illness sleeping on that damp bench." Xiangyun slowly opened her eyes. Seeing the others and looking down at herself, she realized she was drunk. She had originally come to cool herself and find some peace, but without meaning to, she had been penalized into drinking two extra cups. Her delicate constitution couldn't take it, and she had fallen asleep. She felt rather ashamed of herself. She immediately struggled to her feet and went with the others to the Red Fragrance Garden. After washing, she drank two cups of strong tea. Tanchun quickly ordered the sobering stone to be brought and placed in her mouth, and then made her drink some sour broth. Only then did she begin to feel somewhat better.
At that moment, several more dishes of fruit and vegetables were chosen and sent to Sister Feng, and Sister Feng sent some back. After the others had eaten their refreshments, some sat, some stood, some strolled outside to look at the flowers, and some leaned on the railings to watch the fish, each amusing themselves as they pleased. Then Tanchun and Baoqin sat down to a game of chess, with Baochai and Xingyan watching the play. Daiyu and Baoyu stood together in a cluster of flowers, whispering to each other, though no one could hear what they were saying. Presently Lin Zhixiaojia came in with a group of women and a young wife. The young wife, with a sad and troubled face, dared not enter the hall. She went no further than the steps, where she knelt down and knocked her head on the floor with a thud. Tanchun, having suffered a loss in her game, was calculating and recounting, finding she had only two "eyes" left. She laid down her official piece, her eyes fixed on the chessboard, while one hand reached into the box, fiddling with the pieces as she thought. Lin Zhixiaojia stood there for a long time, and only noticed her when she turned around to ask for tea. "What is it?" she asked. Lin Zhixiaojia pointed to the young wife and said, "This is the mother of Caiyun, the young maid in Miss Si's room, and she works in the garden. She has a very sharp tongue. I heard about it and questioned her, but what she said I dare not report to the young ladies. I think she should be driven out." Tanchun said, "Why didn't you report it to the Elder Young Madam?" Lin Zhixiaojia said, "The Elder Young Madam just went to the hall to visit the concubine. I ran into her on the way and explained it to her. She told me to come back and report it to the young lady." Tanchun said, "Why didn't you report it to the Second Young Madam?" Píng'ér said, "There's no need to go back. I'll just mention it when I return." Tanchun nodded and said, "Since that's the case, drive her out. When the Mistress arrives, we'll report it to her for a final decision." Then she went back to her chess game. Lin Zhixiaojia led the woman away, and we need not dwell on that. Daiyu and Bayu, standing among the flowers, understood each other from a distance. Daiyu then said, "Your Third Sister is indeed a clever one. Even though she's been put in charge of affairs, she doesn't take a single step beyond her authority. Someone less scrupulous would have already started throwing their weight around." Baoyu said, "You don't know. While you were ill, she handled quite a few matters. The garden has been divided up for different people to manage, and now you can't pick so much as a blade of grass. She's also dealt with several incidents, using me and Sister Feng as examples to restrain others. She's the most calculating person you'll ever meet—she's far more than just clever." Daiyu said, "That's as it should be. Our household spends far too much. Though I'm not in charge, whenever I have a moment to spare, I do the accounts for you: we spend more than we earn. If we don't economize now, we'll be in trouble before long." Baoyu laughed and said, "No matter how bad things get, we two will never be short of anything." Hearing this, Daiyu turned and went to the hall to chat with Baochai. Baoyu was about to leave when Xiren approached, carrying a small tiered lacquer tray in her hands, with two cups of fresh tea arranged on it. She asked, "Where has he gone? I saw that you two hadn't had any tea for half a day, so I specially brought two cups, and now he's left." Baoyu said, "That wasn't him. Take it to him." He took one cup for himself. Xiren went to deliver the other cup, but found that he happened to be with Baochai, and since there was only one cup of tea, she said, "Whoever is thirsty can drink first, and I'll go and pour another." Baochai smiled and said, "I'm not thirsty. Just a mouthful to rinse my mouth will be enough." She picked up the cup and took a sip, then handed the remaining half to Daiyu. Xiren said, "I'll go and pour another cup." Daiyu said, "You know my illness—the doctor won't let me drink too much tea. This half cup is more than enough for me. It's thoughtful of you to think of it." She finished it and set the cup down. Xiren then came to take Baoyu's cup. Baoyu asked, "I haven't seen Fangguan all morning. Where is she?" Xiren looked around and said, "She was here a moment ago, competing at a grass game with the others, but she's disappeared now." Hearing this, Baoyu hurried back to his room and found Fangguan lying face down on the bed. Baoyu nudged her and said, "Don't sleep. Come out and play with us—we'll be having dinner soon." Fangguan said, "You all had wine and ignored me. I've been bored half the day. Of course I came here to sleep." Baoyu pulled her up, laughing. "We'll have another meal at home tonight. When we come back, I'll ask Sister Xiren to let you eat at our table. How about that?" Fangguan said, "Ou-guan and Rui-guan aren't going up either, and it wouldn't be right for me to go up alone. Besides, I'm not used to eating that noodles—I didn't eat properly in the morning either. I was just hungry, so I told Sister Liu the cook to make me a bowl of soup and half a bowl of rice and send it here. I'll eat that and be done. If we're drinking wine tonight, don't let anyone restrain me—I want to drink my fill. At home, I used to drink two or three catties of good Huiquan wine. Now I've learned this wretched business—they say it's bad for the voice, so I haven't had a whiff of it in years. Today I'm going to break my fast!" Baoyu said, "That's easy."
As she spoke, Liu's wife's kitchen sent someone over with a box. Little Swallow took it and lifted the lid: inside were a bowl of shrimp-ball soup with chicken skin, another bowl of steamed duck in fermented rice wine, a plate of salt-cured goose breast the color of rouge, four cream-filled pine-nut pastry rolls, and a large bowl of steaming, glistening green-paddy fragrant rice. Little Swallow set it all on the table, went to fetch small dishes and chopsticks and bowls, and ladled out a bowl of rice. Fangguan said, "Greasy, greasy—who wants to eat this stuff?" She only took the soup and soaked a bowl of rice in it, picked out two pieces of salt-cured goose, and stopped eating. Baoyu smelled it and found it somehow more appetizing than usual; he ate one of the pastry rolls, then told Little Swallow to ladle half a bowl of rice as well, soaked it in the soup, and ate it—it was wonderfully sweet and delicious. Little Swallow and Fangguan both laughed. When they had finished, Little Swallow was about to take the leftovers back. Baoyu said, "You eat them yourself. If it's not enough, ask for more." Little Swallow said, "No need for more, this is enough already. Earlier, Sister Sheyue brought two plates of pastries for us to eat. After eating this, I don't need anything more." So saying, she stood by the table and finished it all in one go, leaving behind two pastry rolls. "These I'll save for my mother to eat. If there's wine tonight, just give me two bowls to drink." Baoyu laughed and said, "You like wine too? Wait until tonight—we'll have a good drink together. Your Sister Xiren and Sister Qingwen can hold their liquor too, but they're too shy every day. Today we'll all feast. There's one more thing—I meant to tell you, but I forgot until just now. From now on, you must look after Fangguan. If there's anything he fails to do, remind him—Xiren can't take care of all these people." Little Swallow said, "I know, no need to worry. But what about this Wu'er?" Baoyu said, "Go talk to Liu's wife and have him come in directly tomorrow. I'll just let the others know and that will be that." Fangguan, hearing this, laughed and said, "That's the right thing to do." Little Swallow then called in two little maids to wash hands and pour tea. She gathered up the dishes, handed them to the old woman, washed her own hands, and went to find Liu's wife—no need to recount this further. Baoyu then went out to look for his sisters at the Red Fragrance Garden, with Fangguan following behind carrying his towel and fan. He had barely stepped out the courtyard gate when he saw Xiren and Qingwen coming back arm in arm. Baoyu asked, "What were you doing?" Xiren said, "The meal's laid out—we've been waiting for you to eat." Baoyu told them, laughing, about the meal he had just eaten. Xiren said with a smile, "I told you—you're like a cat, you just need to catch a whiff of something good. Rice from the next pot always smells better. Even so, you should go up and join them for appearances' sake." Qingwen poked Fangguan on the forehead with her finger and said, "You little seductress—you ran off to eat whenever you found an opening. How did the two of you arrange it, and you didn't even tell me?" Xiren said with a smile, "It was just a chance encounter—there was no arrangement." Qingwen said, "If that's the case, we're useless. Tomorrow we'll all leave—Fangguan alone will be enough." Xiren said with a smile, "We can all leave, but you can't." Qingwen said, "I'm the first one who should go—lazy, clumsy, bad-tempered, and useless." Xiren said with a smile, "If that peacock-feathered jacket gets another burn hole, who would mend it if you left? Don't try that sly business with me. Whatever I ask you to do, you're too lazy to pick up a needle in any direction. It's not that I'm asking you to do my personal work—either way, it's all his, and you refuse to do any of it. Then how is it that when I was away for a few days, you were half-dead with illness, yet you stayed up all night without caring for your own life to finish it for him? What's the reason for that? Say something real—don't just play dumb and smile at me, it doesn't get you anywhere." As they talked, they arrived in the hall. Aunt Xue had already come. Everyone sat down in order to eat. Baoyu only soaked half a bowl of rice in tea, just for appearances. When they had finished, they drank tea and chatted idly, joking freely.
Outside, Xiao Luo and Xiangling, Fangguan, Ruiguan, Ouguan, Duguan, and four or five others had been amusing themselves all over the garden. Having gathered some flowers and plants, they sat down among their piles of greenery to play the "contest of herbs" game.
One declared, "I have the Guanyin willow."
Another said, "I have the Arhat pine."
A third said, "I have the gentleman bamboo."
The next said, "I have the beauty banana plant."
Another said, "I have the starry green."
Someone else said, "I have the monthly red."
One said, "I have the peony flower from *The Peony Pavilion*."
Another said, "I have the loquat fruit from *The Tale of the Pipa*."
Then Duguan said, "I have the sister flower."
The others had nothing left, so Xiangling said, "I have the husband-and-wife orchid."
Duguan said, "I've never heard of a husband-and-wife orchid."
Xiangling explained: "A single stem with one flower is a lan; a stem with several flowers is a hui. A hui with two branches bearing flowers one above the other is a brother hui. One with two flowers joined side by side at the top is a husband-and-wife hui. This branch of mine has flowers joined side by side—how can it not be one?"
Duguan, having no retort, stood up and laughed. "By your reasoning, if the two branches were one large and one small, it would be a father-and-son hui. And if the two flowers faced away from each other, they'd be an enemy hui. Your husband's been gone half a year—do you miss him so much that you have to call even an orchid a husband-and-wife one? How shameless!"
Xiangling blushed and was about to rise and twist his ear, laughing and scolding, "You wretched little foul-mouthed thing! All that nonsense spilling out of your mouth. Wait till I get up—I'll beat you to death, you little rascal!"
Seeing that she was about to lunge at him, Duguan didn't give her a chance to get up. He threw himself forward and pressed her down flat, then turned his head and called to Ruiguan and the others, laughing, "Come and help me twist his lying mouth!"
The two of them rolled about on the grass. The others clapped their hands and laughed. "Oh dear! There's a whole puddle of water there—what a pity to spoil her new skirt!"
Duguan glanced back and sure enough there was a pool of rainwater nearby. Half of Xiangling's skirt was soaked and stained. Embarrassed, he scrambled up and ran off.
The others couldn't stop laughing. Afraid that Xiangling would take it out on them, they scattered with peals of laughter.
Xiangling sat up and looked down. Greenish water was dripping in spots from her skirt. She was still cursing angrily when, as chance would it, Baoyu, who had seen them playing the herb contest, came looking for some plants to join in the fun. When he saw that the others had all run off and only Xiangling remained, standing alone fussing with her skirt, he asked, "Why did everyone scatter?"
Xiangling said, "I had a husband-and-wife orchid, but they didn't know what it was and said I was making it up. So we quarrelled, and my new skirt got dirty."
Baoyu laughed. "You have a husband-and-wife orchid—but here I have a twin-stemmed water caltrop." Even as he spoke, he was actually holding a twin-stemmed caltrop flower in one hand and had taken the husband-and-wife orchid in the other.
Xiangling said, "Never mind husband-and-wife or twin-stemmed—just look at this skirt."
Baoyu looked down and gave an exclamation of dismay. "How did it get dragged in the mud? This pomegranate-red silk doesn't take stains well—what a pity!"
Xiangling said, "Miss Qin sent this over the other day. She made one for herself and one for me, and I only put it on today."
Baoyu stamped his foot and sighed. "If you were in your own family, ruining a hundred such things a day wouldn't matter. But this is the first one Miss Qin gave you, and you and Miss Bao each have only one. Hers is still in good condition, but yours is already soiled—wouldn't that be letting her down? And then there's your mother—she's so fussy. Even without this, I often hear her scolding you all for not knowing how to live and only wasting things, not knowing how to cherish your blessings. If she sees this, she'll have even more to say."
Xiangling, upon hearing these words, felt they struck exactly the right note, and she was actually pleased. She smiled and said, "That's exactly right. I have several new skirts, but none like this one. If I had another like it, I could change right away, and that would be that. We'll talk about it later."
Baoyu said, "Don't move—you'd better just stand still. Otherwise you'll dirty your undershirt, knee bands, and shoes too. I have an idea: Xiren made one exactly like this last month, but she's in mourning now and hasn't been wearing it. Why don't I have her give it to you in exchange for this one?"
Xiangling shook her head with a smile. "No, that won't do. If the others heard about it, it wouldn't be good."
Baoyu said, "What's there to fear? Once their mourning period is over, she can wear whatever she likes—surely she wouldn't forbid you from giving her other things. If you refuse, that wouldn't be like your usual self! Besides, this isn't something to hide. You can even tell Miss Bao about it. The only thing is I'm afraid your mother might get angry."
Xiangling thought it over and saw the logic. She nodded and smiled. "Then let's do it that way. But don't let your kindness go to waste. I'll be waiting for you—be sure to have her bring it herself."
Baoyu was overjoyed. He promised and hurried back, all the while thinking to himself with a heavy heart: "What a pity about this girl—she has no parents, doesn't even remember her own original surname, was kidnapped and sold, and then ended up sold to this tyrant of a master." Then he thought of what had happened with Ping'er the day before, which he hadn't expected either—and today's events were even more unexpected than that.
Lost in these thoughts, he returned to his room, pulled Xiren aside, and told her the whole story in detail.
Everyone had always felt sorry for Xiangling. Xiren was naturally generous with her hands, and besides, she and Xiangling had always been good friends. As soon as she heard this, she hurriedly opened her trunk, took out the skirt, folded it carefully, and followed Baoyu to find Xiangling, who was still standing there waiting.
Xiren laughed and said, "I told you you were too mischievous—you've really gone and made a mess of
"Only after the story is finished," Xiangling said, blushing. "Thank you, sister. Who knew those mischievous devils would play such a dirty trick?" So saying, she took the skirt, unfolded it, and looked—it was indeed exactly the same as her own. She then told Baoyu to turn his back, undid the skirt with her hands held close to her body, and tied on the new one. Xiren said, "Give me the soiled one to take back. I'll clean it and send it to you later. If you take it back yourself, someone will be sure to ask questions." Xiangling said, "Dear sister, take it and give it to whichever girl you like. I have this one now and don't need the other." Xiren said, "You're certainly generous." Xiangling hastily made another curtsey of thanks, and Xiren took the soiled skirt and left.
Xiangling saw Baoyu crouching on the ground. Using a twig, he had dug a small hole for the "husband-and-wife" orchid and the "twin-lover" caltrop he had just gathered. He first spread fallen petals as a cushion, placed the caltrop and orchid inside, covered them with more fallen petals, and then scooped up earth to bury and smooth it over. Xiangling took his hand and laughed. "What do you call this? No wonder everyone says you're always up to sneaky little things that make people's flesh creep. Look at your hands—all smeared with mud and slime. Go wash them quickly." Baoyu laughed, got up, and went off to wash his hands, while Xiangling also walked away. They had gone several paces when Xiangling turned back and called to Baoyu. Baoyu, not knowing what she wanted, stood there with his two muddy hands, smiling cheerfully as he turned back. "What is it?" Xiangling only smiled. Just then her little maid Zhen'er came over and said, "The Second Miss is waiting for you to come and talk." Xiangling then said to Baoyu, "Don't tell your brother about the skirt, all right?" With that, she turned and left. Baoyu laughed. "Am I mad? Sticking my head into a tiger's mouth?" So saying, he too went back to wash his hands. To know what happened next, please listen to the following chapter.
