有時怒起,提井欄便打老公頭;

Wu Xuejiu spoke to Song Jiang: "Today we have an opportunity. It concerns Shi Yong's new recruit—a man who is closest friends with Luan Tingyu, and also a dear acquaintance of Yang Lin and Deng Fei. He knows that you, brother, have had trouble attacking the Zhu Family Manor, and he has come forward with a plan to join our band, offering it as his entrance gift. He will arrive within five days. This plan can be executed within five days. What do you think?" When Song Jiang heard this, he was overjoyed and said: "Splendid!" Only then did his face light up with smiles.
Now, what was this plan? It shall be revealed presently. Dear reader, remember this thread of the story. When Song Jiang first attacked the Zhu Family Manor, this matter arose simultaneously. But it is difficult to narrate one side while also telling the other, so we shall set aside the account of these two attacks on the Zhu Family Manor for now, and first tell of the man who joined our band and took advantage of the opportunity. We shall pick up the main thread presently. In the region by the sea in Shandong, there was a prefecture called Dengzhou. Outside Dengzhou city stood a mountain, and on that mountain there were many wolves, leopards, tigers, and panthers that came down to harm people. For this reason, the prefect of Dengzhou summoned all the hunters and issued them written orders with a deadline, commanding them to capture the great tiger on the mountain of Dengzhou. He also required the heads of the villages before and after the mountain to submit written pledges to capture the tiger. Those who failed to deliver it by the deadline would be severely punished, placed in caning stocks, and shown no mercy. Now, at the foot of the mountain in Dengzhou lived a family of hunters, two brothers. The elder brother was called Jie Zhen, and the younger was called Jie Bao. Both brothers wielded steel-tipped iron forks and possessed remarkable martial skill. Among all the hunters in the prefecture, they were acknowledged as the best. Jie Zhen had the nickname "Two-Headed Snake," and Jie Bao was called "Double-Tailed Scorpion." Both their parents had died, and neither had married. The elder brother stood over seven feet tall, with a dark reddish-purple complexion, a slender waist, and broad shoulders. The younger brother Jie Bao was even more fearsome—he too stood over seven feet tall, with a round face and dark body, and on both his legs were tattooed two flying demons. When his temper rose, he felt as though he could overturn the sky and the earth, uproot trees and shake mountains. There is a poem to the tune of "Xijiangyue" describing the fine qualities of these two brothers:
Native hunters of Dengzhou since birth,
Born fierce and valiant heroes.
Nimble as monkeys through mountains and ridges,
Deer and elk trembled at the sight of them.
In hand they bore iron lotus forks,
At the waist hung sharp knives wrapped in cattail leaves.
Leopard-skin skirts and tiger-sinew sashes—
The two Jie brothers, young and formidable.
The two brothers received the written orders with the deadline from the authorities and returned home. They prepared their spring bows and poisoned arrows, crossbows and forks, put on their leopard-skin trousers and tiger-skin outer garments, and took up their iron forks. The two of them went straight to the mountain in Dengzhou, set their spring bows, and climbed a tree to wait for a full day—but nothing happened. They gathered their spring bows and went down. The next day, they brought dried rations and went up the mountain again to lie in wait. As evening fell, the two brothers set their spring bows once more, climbed the tree, and waited until the fifth watch—still no movement. They moved their spring bows and set them by the western hillside instead. They sat there until dawn, and still caught nothing. The two grew anxious and said: "We must deliver the tiger within three days. If we are late, we will surely be punished. What are we to do?"
On the third night, the two brothers lay in ambush until the fourth watch. Unconsciously, their bodies grew weary. They leaned against each other's backs and dozed, but before their eyes had fully closed, they suddenly heard the twang of a spring bow. The two leaped to their feet, seized their steel forks, and looked around in all directions—there, a great tiger, struck by a poisoned arrow, was rolling on the ground. They leveled their steel forks and moved forward. The tiger, seeing men approach, tried to flee with the arrow still in its body. The two gave chase. Before they had gone half a mountain's length, the poison took effect. The tiger could not withstand it; it let out a roar and tumbled down the mountain in a heap. Jie Bao said: "Good! I know this mountain—it's behind the garden of Squire Mao's manor. Let's go down to his house and demand the tiger."
At that time, the two brothers took their steel forks and went straight down the mountain. They went to Squire Mao's manor and knocked on the gate. It was just breaking dawn when the two forced open the manor gate and entered. A servant reported this to the Squire. After some time, Squire Mao came out. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao set down their steel forks, bowed, and said: "Uncle, it has been a long time since we last met. Today we have come especially to pay our respects." Squire Mao said: "My nephews, how is it that you have come so early? What business brings you here?" Jie Zhen said: "We would not dare disturb Uncle's sleep without cause. Now, your nephews have been given written orders with a deadline by the authorities to capture a tiger. We waited three days in a row. This morning at the fifth watch, we shot one, but it rolled down the back mountain and fell into Uncle's garden. We humbly ask you to grant us passage so that we may retrieve the tiger." Squire Mao said: "No trouble at all. Since it has fallen in my garden, you two sit and rest for a while. You must be hungry—have some breakfast before you go to fetch it." He ordered the servants to prepare an early meal for them. He urged the two brothers to eat and drink, and when they had finished, Jie Zhen and Jie Bao rose and said with gratitude: "We are deeply grateful for Uncle's generous hospitality. We humbly ask you to lead us there so that we may retrieve the tiger and return it to your nephews." Squire Mao said: "Since it is behind my manor, what is there to worry about? Sit and have some tea first—there is plenty of time to fetch it." Jie Zhen and Jie Bao did not dare to disobey, so they sat down again. The servants brought tea, and Squire Mao told the two to drink it. Then Squire Mao said: "Now I shall go with my nephews to fetch the tiger." Jie Zhen and Jie Bao said: "We are deeply grateful, Uncle."
Mao Taigong led the two men into the rear of the manor and ordered a servant to bring the key and open the lock. They tried every way but could not get it open. Mao Taigong said, "No one has opened this garden for some time—the lock must have rusted shut from the bolt. Go fetch a hammer and break it open." A servant brought a hammer and knocked the lock apart. Everyone went into the garden to look, searching all along the hillside, but they could find nothing. Mao Taigong said, "Nephew, could the two of you have mistaken the place? You're not looking carefully enough. Perhaps it didn't fall in my garden after all." Jie Zhen said, "How could we be mistaken? We were born and raised here—how could we not know this place?" Mao Taigong said, "Search all you like. If you find it, you can take it away yourself." Jie Bao said, "Brother, come look here—this stretch of grass has been trampled completely flat, and there's a trail of blood on it. How can you say it's not here? It must have been your servants who carried it off." Mao Taigong said, "Don't talk such nonsense. How would my manor servants even know there was a tiger in the garden, let alone carry it away? You saw for yourself—I just broke the lock open in front of you, and the two of you entered the garden together with me to search. How can you speak to me this way!" Jie Zhen said, "Uncle, you must return our tiger so we can present it to the authorities." Mao Taigong said, "You two have no sense of propriety! I kindly invited you to eat and drink, and now you turn around and accuse me of stealing your tiger." Jie Bao said, "What accusation? You serve as the local headman, and the government has issued you official documents with a deadline to catch it—but you had no ability to capture it yourself. Now you come to take what we caught and present it as your own merit, leaving my brother and me to eat the punishment stick." Mao Taigong said, "Whether you eat the punishment stick is no concern of mine." Jie Zhen and Jie Bao glared at him and said, "Would you dare let us search?" Mao Taigong said, "My household is separate from yours, inside and out. Look at these two savage fellows, coming here with such disrespect." Jie Bao rushed forward into the hall but could not find it. Fire rose in his heart, and he began smashing things in the hall. Jie Zhen also went to the hall, tore down the railing, and burst inside. Mao Taigong shouted, "Jie Zhen and Jie Bao are robbing us in broad daylight!" The two smashed the chairs and tables in the hall. Seeing that the manor was fully prepared, the two turned and ran out the gate, pointing back at the manor and cursing: "You stole our tiger—we'll settle this before the magistrate."
The Jie brothers' cunning caught the prey; the Mao family's craft ensnared the men.
What began with a dispute over one tiger would later bring forth two dragons.
While the two were still cursing, three or four horses came riding toward the manor, leading a group of men. Jie Zhen recognized Mao Taigong's son, Mao Zhongyi. He confronted him: "Your manor servants caught our tiger, and your father won't return it—instead he's trying to beat my brother and me." Mao Zhongyi said, "These country folk are unreasonable. My father must have been deceived by them. Don't be angry—come with me back to the house, and I'll get it returned to you." Jie Zhen and Jie Bao thanked Mao Zhongyi, had the manor gate opened, and the two went inside. But once Jie Zhen and Jie Bao had entered, Mao Zhongyi ordered the gate shut and shouted, "Seize them!" From the two corridors rushed out twenty or thirty manor servants, along with the men who had come behind the horses—all of them government runners. The brothers were caught off guard. The crowd swarmed over them and bound them tight. Mao Zhongyi said, "My family shot a tiger last night—how dare they come and falsely claim it as theirs? They took the opportunity to plunder our household goods and smash our property—what crime is this? If we send them to the prefecture, we'll rid the prefecture of a pest." It turned out that before dawn, Mao Zhongyi had already sent the tiger to the prefecture, and had brought a number of government runners to capture Jie Zhen and Jie Bao. He hadn't expected the two to be so blind to the situation—they had fallen right into his trap and could not argue their way out. Mao Taigong ordered that the two steel forks they carried, along with a bundle of supposed stolen goods and the many broken household items, be gathered up. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao were stripped naked, their hands bound behind their backs, and sent to the prefecture. The prefecture had a chief clerk named Wang Zheng, who happened to be Mao Taigong's son-in-law. He had already gone to the prefect and made his report. As soon as Jie Zhen and Jie Bao were brought before the hall, without any hearing they were thrown down and beaten. The prefect demanded they confess to falsely claiming the tiger, each wielding steel forks, and thereby plundering property. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao could not endure the torture and were forced to confess as demanded. The prefect ordered two cangues of twenty-five catties each to be placed on them, and they were thrown into the main jail. Mao Taigong and Mao Zhongyi returned to the manor and discussed: "We cannot let these two live—better to finish them off once and for all to prevent future trouble." Father and son then went to the prefecture themselves and instructed Clerk Wang Zheng to root them out completely so that no sprout could ever grow again. Meanwhile, they would work their own connections with the prefect.
Now, when Jie Zhen and Jie Bao were thrown into the condemned prisoners' cell, they were brought to the guard post to meet the officer in charge. The man's name was Bao Ji. He had already received silver from Mao Taigong and had heeded Clerk Wang's instructions to see to the deaths of the two brothers. He came and sat down at the guard post. The little jailer said to the two men, "Come here quickly and kneel before the post." Officer Bao shouted, "So you two are the 'Two-Headed Snake' and the 'Double-Tailed Scorpion,' are you?" Jie Zhen said, "Though people call us by those nicknames, we have never harmed any good person." Officer Bao shouted, "You two beasts—this time in my hands, I'll make your two-headed snake into a one-headed snake, your double-tailed scorpion into a single-tailed scorpion. Take them into the main jail at once."
The young jailer brought the two men into the prison. Seeing no one about, the petty officer said, "Do you two recognize me? I am your elder brother's wife's brother." Xie Zhen said, "I only have my own brother here—I have no other elder brother." The young jailer said, "You two must be the brothers of Sun the Commandant." Xie Zhen said, "Sun the Commandant is my cousin, but I've never met you before. Could you be Jiuhe, my uncle's son?" The petty officer said, "That's right. My surname is Yue, given name He. My ancestral home is Maozhou. My forebears brought the family here and married my elder sister to Sun the Commandant. I've been working here as a petty jailer. People heard me sing well and call me 'Iron Whistle' Yue He. My brother-in-law saw that I had a talent for martial arts and taught me several spear techniques." How do we know this? A poem bears witness:
*A clever mind, neat dress and bearing,*
*A handsome spirit, clear in speech.*
*"Iron Whistle" they call him—*
*Yue He's wit is heaven-born.*
Now this Yue He was a clever and quick-witted man. He knew all manner of musical instruments—whatever he studied, he mastered. In anything he did, he could see the beginning and the end. When it came to spear and staff martial arts, he loved them as dearly as sugar and honey. Because he recognized that Xie Zhen and Xie Bao were men of honor, he wanted to save them, but a single thread cannot make a lone palm cannot clap—he could only get a message to them. Yue He said, "Let me tell you two something. Now Commandant Bao has taken money from Mao Tai-gong and will certainly try to take your lives. What are you going to do?" Xie Zhen said, "Had you not mentioned Sun the Commandant, I would have held my peace. But since you've brought him up, I beg you to send a message." Yue He said, "Who do you want me to send it to?" Xie Zhen said, "I have an elder sister—my father's side—who is married to Sun the Commandant's brother. She lives outside the East Gate at Ten-li Marker. She is my aunt's daughter, called the 'Sow' Gu Dasao. She runs a wine shop and also slaughters cattle and runs gambling in her house. My sister—thirty or forty men couldn't get near her. My brother-in-law Sun Xin, with all his skill, is no match for her. Only this sister of mine is closest to my brother and me. The mother of Sun Xin and Sun Li is my mother, so they are also my cousins. I implore you to secretly send word to her and tell her of my trouble—my sister will surely come to rescue me."
When Yue He had heard all this, he said, "Dear kinsmen, put your minds at ease for now." First he hid some baked meat and provisions, then went to the prison, opened the door, and gave them to Xie Zhen and Xie Bao to eat. He made an excuse about business, locked the prison door, told another petty officer to watch it, and went straight to the East Gate, heading toward Ten-li Marker. Soon he saw a wine shop ahead, with beef and mutton hanging at the door. Behind the house, a crowd of people were gambling. Yue He entered the shop and saw a woman sitting at the counter. He observed:
*Heavy brows, large eyes, a fat face and thick waist.*
*Strange hairpins in her head, fashionable bracelets on her wrists.*
*When anger seized her, she'd grab a well-pole and strike her husband on the head;*
*When vexed, she'd take a stone hammer and smash a customer's leg.*
*Never learned to hold a needle—*
*She took up the spear and staff as a woman's work.*
Yue He entered the shop, looked at Gu Dasao, and said with a bow, "Does the surname Sun belong here?" Gu Dasao hastily replied, "Indeed. Does this gentleman wish to buy wine or meat? If he wants to gamble, please sit in the back." Yue He said, "This humble one is Yue He, the younger brother of Sun the Commandant's wife." Gu Dasao laughed and said, "So it is Uncle Yue He! I can see you look just as handsome as your sister. Please come inside for tea." Yue He followed her into the guest seat. Gu Dasao asked, "I heard that my uncle works in the prefecture. Your household must be poor and busy—that's why we haven't met. What wind blows you here today?" Yue He replied, "I wouldn't have come to trouble you without reason. Today two criminals happened to be brought into the hall. Though I've never met them, I've often heard their great names. One is 'Two-headed Snake' Xie Zhen, and the other is 'Double-tailed Scorpion' Xie Bao." Gu Dasao said, "These two are my younger brothers! What crime have they committed to be thrown in prison?" Yue He said, "The two of them shot a tiger, but the local wealthy man Mao Tai-gong claimed the credit. They also framed the two as bandits who robbed their household and sent them to the prefecture. He has spent money everywhere, high and low, and soon Commandant Bao will have them killed in prison. This humble one saw injustice but could not save them alone. I thought only of our kinship and the importance of righteousness, so I came specially to bring word. They said, 'Only my sister can save them.' If you don't act quickly and decisively, it will be hard to rescue them."
When Gu Dasao heard this, she cried out bitterly. She called to the servants, "Quickly go find my Second Brother and tell him to come speak with me." Several servants went and soon returned with Sun Xin. He met Yue He. How do we know Sun Xin's fine qualities? A poem bears witness:
*A fine son of the military class,*
*His brows and eyes radiate divine might.*
*His spirit dwells in Penglai's abode,*
*His family came from the southern sea.*
*He hides ambitions of a wild swan,*
*Well-matched to his tigress wife.*
*When his whip rises, twin dragons appear;*
*When his spear strikes, a lone python flies.*
*Young as Sun Lang was in his day,*
*Men call him "Little Yuchi."*
It happened that Sun Xin's ancestors were from Qiongzhou, descendants of military officers, and had been transferred to Dengzhou to garrison there, where the brothers had made their home. Sun Xin was tall and powerful, having fully learned all his elder brother's skills, wielding spear and whip with such mastery that many people compared the two brothers to Yuchi Gong, calling him "Little Yuchi." When Gu Dasao told Sun Xin the whole story, he said, "In that case, tell your uncle to go back first. The two of them are already in prison, and it all depends on your uncle to look after them. My wife and I will work out a proper plan, and then we'll come to join you." Yue He said, "If there's any use for me, I'll do my utmost." Gu Dasao set out wine and food for him, and then brought out a packet of loose silver, which she gave to Yue He, saying, "I hope you'll take this trouble, uncle, to distribute it in the prison to the guards and the jailers, and take good care of my two brothers." Yue He thanked her, took the silver, and returned to the prison to use it on their behalf. That is another matter.
Now let us tell of Gu Dasao and Sun Xin as they discussed the matter. She said, "What plan do you have to rescue my two brothers?" Sun Xin said, "That scoundrel Mao Tai-gong has wealth and power. He'll guard against your two brothers ever getting out, and he'll never let it rest—he'll certainly finish them off. If that's the case, they'll surely die at his hands. Unless we raid the prison, there's no other way to save them." Gu Dasao said, "Then let's go tonight." Sun Xin laughed and said, "You are too rough and rash. Even you and I need to work out a proper plan. Once we've raided the prison, we'll need somewhere to go. Without my elder brother and these two men, we can't pull this off." Gu Dasao said, "Who are these two?" Sun Xin said, "They are the uncle and nephew, Zou Yuan and Zou Run, the two most devoted gamblers. Right now they are at Mount Dengyun in Taigu, gathering men to rob travelers on the road. They are my closest friends. If we can get these two to help us, this affair will succeed." Gu Dasao said, "Mount Dengyun isn't far from here. Go tonight and invite the uncle and nephew to come and discuss the plan." Sun Xin said, "I'll go now. Prepare wine and food—I'm certain I can bring them here." Gu Dasao ordered the servants to slaughter a pig, lay out several plates of fruit and dishes for drinking, and set the tables. When dusk fell, Sun Xin returned, leading two fine heroes. The leader of the two was named Zou Yuan, a native of Laizhou. From youth he had been the most devoted gambler, a man of leisure by trade, loyal and generous by nature. Moreover, he was a master of martial arts, high-spirited and unyielding, brooking no insult. On the rivers and lakes he was known by the nickname "Dragon Emerging from the Forest." The second hero was Zou Run, his nephew, about the same age as his uncle, the two so evenly matched one could hardly tell them apart. He was tall and large, born with a strange mark on his body—a fleshy tumor on the back of his head—for which people called him "One-Horned Dragon." Whenever Zou Run quarreled with someone and his temper flared, he would charge forward headfirst and butt them. One day he rammed a pine tree by the stream and snapped it clean off. All who witnessed it were dumbfounded. There is a poem to the tune of "West River Moon" that praises the merits of this uncle and nephew:
*First among fighters in the brawl,*
*Champion of dice and gambling hall.*
*Loyal and upright, spirit like a rainbow's light,*
*Martial skills that tower above the rest in might.*
*They've built their lair atop Mount Dengyun's height,*
*Their fame resounds throughout Shandong's breadth and length.*
*Like twin dragons churning rivers and overturning the sea,*
*How could they be mere playthings in a pond's small reach?*
When Gu Dasao saw them, she invited them into the back room to sit down. She told them the whole story, and then they discussed the plan to raid the prison. Zou Yuan said, "At my place we have eighty or ninety men, but only twenty or so are true confidants. Once we've done this business tomorrow, we won't be able to stay here any longer. But I have a place in mind—I've wanted to go there for some time. I just don't know whether you two, husband and wife, would be willing to come." Gu Dasao said, "Wherever it is, we'll follow you, as long as you help me rescue my two brothers." Zou Yuan said, "Now the stronghold at Liangshan Marsh is flourishing greatly, and Song Jiang is most eager to welcome men of talent. I have three acquaintances already in his service: 'Brocade Leopard' Yang Lin, 'Fiery-Eyed Lynx' Deng Fei, and 'Stone General' Shi Yong—all of them have been with the band for some time. After we rescue your two brothers, we'll all go together to join the outlaw band at Liangshan Marsh. What do you think?" Gu Dasao said, "That's the best plan. If even one person refuses to go, I'll stab him to death with my spear."
Zou Run said, "There's one more thing. Suppose we succeed in freeing the men—I'm afraid Dengzhou might send soldiers after us. What then?" Sun Xin said, "My own elder brother is now the military commander of this garrison. He's the only truly capable man in all of Dengzhou. Several times when bandits have threatened the city, it was he who routed them, and his fame is known everywhere. Tomorrow I'll go invite him myself and get his agreement." Zou Yuan said, "I'm afraid he won't be willing to become an outlaw." Sun Xin said, "I have my own good method."
That night they drank until the middle of the night, then rested until dawn. They left two good好汉 at home, and sent a steward leading one or two others to push a cart quickly into the city barracks to invite my elder brother Sun the Commandant and his wife Elder Sister Yue, saying, "The elder sister-in-law at home is gravely ill and begs you to come and see her." Gu Dasao instructed the steward, "Just say I am at death's door and have a few urgent words—she must come at once. I only have a few things to entrust her with." The steward pushed the cart away. Sun Xin waited at the gate, watching for his elder brother. After mealtime, from afar they saw the cart coming, carrying Elder Sister Yue, with Commandant Sun riding a horse behind, a dozen soldiers following, heading toward Ten-Mile Marker. Sun Xin went in to report to Gu Dasao, saying, "Our brother and sister-in-law have arrived." Gu Dasao instructed, "Do exactly as I say." Sun Xin came out to receive his brother and sister-in-law, and invited the sister-in-law to descend from the cart. Together they went inside to see how the sister-in-law's illness was faring.
Commandant Sun dismounted and came through the door—truly a fine man: a pale yellow face, a full beard, over eight feet tall. His surname was Sun, his given name Li, his nickname "The Ailing Yuchi." He could draw a hard bow, ride a fierce horse, wield a long spear, and on his wrist hung a steel tiger-eye bamboo-joint whip. When coastal people saw him, they surrendered before the wind. A poem attests:
His dark beard billowed like black mist, his temper shot like a falling star.
Whip and spear were his constant practice, bow and arrow his daily drill.
His broad face seemed coated with gold, his twin eyes were like drops of lacquer.
His name resounded in the army—"The Ailing Yuchi" Sun Li.
At this time "The Ailing Yuchi" Sun Li dismounted and, entering the door, asked, "Brother, what illness does your wife have?" Sun Xin answered, "She has contracted a strange ailment, most peculiar. Please, brother, come inside and I will tell you." Sun Li went in. Sun Xin ordered the steward to take those soldiers who had followed with the horses to the shop across the road for wine. He then had the steward lead the horse away and invited Sun Li inside to sit. After a while, Sun Xin said, "Please, brother and sister-in-law, come to the inner room to see the patient." Sun Li and Elder Sister Yue entered the inner room, but there was no patient there. Sun Li asked, "In which room is your wife ill?" Just then Gu Dasao came in from outside, with Zou Yuan and Zou Run following behind. Sun Li said, "Sister-in-law, what exactly ails you?" Gu Dasao said, "Greetings, brother-in-law. I suffer from the illness of saving brothers." Sun Li said, "This is strange indeed—saving which brothers?" Gu Dasao said, "Brother-in-law, don't play deaf and dumb. You are in the city—how could you not know that those two are my brothers, even if they are not your brothers?" Sun Li said, "I know nothing of the matter. Which two brothers?" Gu Dasao said, "Brother-in-law, I am before you. Today the matter is urgent and I must speak plainly: Xie Zhen and Xie Bao have been framed by Mao Taiyong of Dengyun Mountain and Magistrate Wang, and they will soon be put to death. Now I and these two good好汉 have already decided to go into the city to storm the prison and rescue my two brothers, then all go to join the Liangshan Marsh. I feared that tomorrow the affair would break and implicate you beforehand. That is why I pretended to be ill and asked you and sister-in-law to come here to discuss the best course. If you are unwilling to go, we will go to Liangshan Marsh ourselves. These days the court has no sense of justice—those who escape are safe, while those who remain face legal trouble. As the saying says, 'The one nearest the fire is the first to be scorched.' You would be the one to suffer legal punishment and sit in prison for us, and then no one would bring food to save you. What is your honored opinion?" Sun Li said, "I am a military commandant in Dengzhou—how would I dare to do such a thing!" Gu Dasao said, "Since you refuse, then today we shall fight you to the death." Gu Dasao drew two knives from her side, and Zou Yuan and Zou Run each drew short blades. Sun Li cried, "Sister-in-law, stop! Do not be hasty! Let me consider at length and deliberate slowly." Elder Sister Yue was so frightened she could not speak for a long while. Gu Dasao then said, "Since you refuse, then we will first send sister-in-law ahead, and we will set about the task ourselves." Sun Li said, "Even if we must do this, let me first go home to pack my bags and assess the situation before we act." Gu Dasao said, "Brother-in-law, your brother-in-law Yue has tipped us off. We will storm the prison and collect your luggage at the same time—there is no need to delay." Sun Li sighed and said, "Since you have all decided on this course, how can I refuse? Will I not end up suffering legal punishment for you later? Very well, very well, very well—let us all deliberate together and then act." He first sent Zou Yuan to Dengyun Mountain stronghold to gather the goods and men, and bring those twenty trusted men to the shop to assemble. Zou Yuan left. He then sent Sun Xin into the city to ask Yue He for news, to arrange a meeting, and to secretly inform Xie Zhen and Xie Bao. The next day, Zou Yuan had finished gathering the gold and silver at Dengyun Mountain stronghold and came with his men to help. At Sun Xin's house there were also seven or eight trusted stewards, together with the dozen soldiers Sun Li had brought—over forty people in all. Sun Xin slaughtered two pigs and one sheep, and everyone ate their fill. Gu Dasao concealed sharp knives against her body and disguised herself as a woman delivering food, going ahead first. Sun Xin followed Sun Li, while Zou Yuan led Zou Run, each taking their stewards, splitting into two groups to enter. Indeed:
Seeking to catch the tiger becomes instead the calamity of releasing the tiger;
Tiger officials and tiger clerks scheme in vain.
It is entirely thanks to Iron Bellows opening the way
That the iron prison of the jail city is broken open.
Now let us return to the prison in Dengzhou, where Warden Bao, having received Mao Tai-gong's bribes and gifts, was bent on doing away with the lives of Jie Zhen and Jie Bao. That very day, Yue He stood with his staff of office just inside the prison gate by the lions' mouth, when he heard the bell-pull rattle.
"Who's there?" Yue He called out.
"A woman bringing food," answered Gu Dasao.
Yue He understood at once. He opened the gate and let Gu Dasao in, then closed it again. She made her way down the corridor. Warden Bao was sitting in the guard room and shouted at the sight of her, "Who is this woman, that she dares enter the prison to bring food? Since ancient times, no wind has blown through a jail."
Yue He replied, "This is the elder sister of Jie Zhen and Jie Bao. She has come to bring food."
Warden Bao shouted, "Don't let her go in! You take it in to them yourself."
Yue He took the meal, opened the cage-bed, and gave it to the two brothers.
Jie Zhen and Jie Bao asked, "Uncle, how did it go with what you said last night?"
Yue He replied, "Your elder sister has come inside. We only need to coordinate from within and without." Yue He then unlocked the cage-bed for the two of them.
They heard a junior jailer come in and report: "Prefect Sun is knocking at the gate and wants to come in."
Warden Bao said, "He is a garrison officer—what business does he have in my prison? Don't open the gate!"
Gu Dasao slipped around to the side of the guard room.
Outside, a voice called again: "Prefect Sun is getting impatient—he's breaking down the gate!"
Warden Bao, furious, came down from the guard room. Gu Dasao cried out in a loud voice, "Where are my brothers?" In a flash, she drew two gleaming sharp knives from her sides.
Warden Bao saw things looked bad and made to flee outside the guard room. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao raised their cangues and squeezed out through the prison bars. They met Warden Bao head-on. Caught off guard, Bao was struck hard across the head by Jie Bao's cangue and his skull was smashed to pieces.
Gu Dasao struck at once, stabbing three or five junior jailers. They all raised a shout and fought their way out of the prison. Sun Li and Sun Xin held the two guards at bay. Seeing the four men emerge from the jail, they all made straight for the front of the prefectural yamen.邹渊 and 邹润 had already dragged Magistrate Wang's head out from the yamen. The townspeople raised a great shout and fled toward the city gate first.
Prefect Sun, mounted on his horse with his bow bent and an arrow nocked, brought up the rear. The people along the street all closed their doors and dared not come out. The constables of the prefecture recognized Prefect Sun—who among them dared to bar the way?
The crowd surrounded Sun Li as they rushed out of the city gate and made straight for the Ten-Mile Board. They helped Lady Yue into the carriage. Gu Dasao mounted a horse and rode alongside to assist. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao said to the others, "How can we endure it—that old devil Mao Tai-gong, our sworn enemy? How can we not have our revenge?"
Sun Li said, "Well spoken." He ordered his brother Sun Xin and their uncle Yue He to go ahead and escort the carriage, while they would follow behind. Sun Xin and Yue He escorted the carriage on ahead.
Sun Li then led Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, 邹渊, 邹润, and their followers straight to Mao Tai-gong's manor. It happened that Mao Zhong-yi and the old lord Mao were in the manor celebrating a birthday with wine, quite off guard. The band of heroes raised a battle cry and charged in, killing Mao Tai-gong, Mao Zhong-yi, and every member of the household, old and young, leaving not one alive. They searched the bedchambers and found over ten packets of gold, silver, and valuables; from the rear courtyard they led out seven or eight fine horses, and loaded four of them with the loot. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao picked out several good garments to wear, then set a single blaze to the whole manor and burned it down. Each man mounted a horse, and leading their party, they rode less than thirty li before they overtook the carriage and the others, and all traveled together on the road.
As they went, they seized three or more fine horses from the farmsteads along the way and pressed on through the night toward Mount Liang. There is a "West River Moon" that bears witness:
Loyalty and righteousness are the root of a man's life;
Treachery and evil are the ruin of a state.
Wolves and jackals in their greed usurp official posts,
Making brave men wring their hands in despair.
The plot to seize the tiger was vile beyond words,
The jailbreak scheme worthy of admiration.
The walls of Dengzhou city wept bitter grief—
In an instant, corpses lay strewn everywhere.
Within a day or two they arrived at Shi Yong's inn, and Zou Yuan met with him, asking after Yang Lin and Deng Fei. Shi Yong replied that Song Jiang had gone to attack the Zhu Family Manor, and both men had gone along. They had suffered two defeats, and it was reported that Yang Lin and Deng Fei had both been trapped there, with no knowing their fate. He also related that the three sons of the Zhu Family Manor were formidable men, and that with their martial arts instructor, "Iron Club" Luan Tingyu, aiding them, the manor could not be breached on the second attempt either.
When Sun Li heard this, he laughed loudly. "All of us have come to join the great stronghold, and we have not yet contributed a single measure of merit. What if I offer this one scheme to smash the Zhu Family Manor, as a gift to mark our entry?"
Shi Yong was delighted. "I would gladly hear your plan," he said.
Sun Li said, "Luan Tingyu and I were trained in martial arts by the same master. I know his spear and saber techniques, and he knows mine. Today we shall pretend that we have been transferred from Dengzhou to garrison Yunzhou, and that we are passing through here to pay him a visit. He will certainly come out to welcome us. Once we get inside, we coordinate from within and without, and the great affair will be accomplished. How does this plan sound?"
He had just finished laying out the scheme with Shi Young when a soldier reported: "Military Adviser Wu the Scholar has come down from the mountain, heading to the Zhu Family Manor to provide reinforcements."
Shi Yong, hearing this, told the soldier to quickly inform the military adviser and ask him to come to the inn for a meeting. Before he had finished speaking, troops had already arrived in front of the inn—it was Lü Fang and Guo Sheng, along with the three Ruan brothers, followed by Military Adviser Wu Yong leading five hundred men. Shi Yong welcomed them into the inn, introduced them to the group, and explained everything about their coming to join the stronghold and offering their plan.
Wu Yong was overjoyed. "Since all these heroes are willing to help accomplish the stronghold's mission, do not go up the mountain yet. Instead, please go to the Zhu Family Manor and carry out this plan. How would that be—to complete this act of merit?"
Sun Li and the others were all pleased and agreed unanimously.
Wu Yong said, "I will be leaving now. When the battle array is formed, my men will go ahead. All you heroes will follow shortly after."
Having finished his deliberations, Wu the Scholar first went to Song Jiang's camp. He found Song Jiang with furrowed brow and a face full of worry. Wu Yong set out wine to cheer him up, and told him all about how Shi Yong, Yang Lin, and Deng Fei had come to know Sun Li, the Dengzhou garrison commander nicknamed "the Sick Yuchi," and that Sun Li and the Zhu Family Manor's martial arts instructor Luan Tingyu had been trained by the same master. Now there were eight men in all who had come to join the great stronghold, and they had specially offered this plan as their gift to mark their entry. The scheme had already been settled—they would coordinate from within and without, act accordingly, and then come to pay their respects to the elder brother.
When Song Jiang heard this, he was overjoyed and cast all his worries to the far ends of the sky. He ordered wine to be set out in the camp and a banquet arranged to receive them.
Meanwhile, Sun Li instructed his attendants and followers to follow the carts and troops and rest at one location. He himself, together with Zhen Xiu, Zhen Bao, Zou Yuan, Zou Run, Sun Xin, Gu Dasao, and Yue He—eight men in all—came to pay respects to Song Jiang. When the formal greetings were complete, Song Jiang set out wine and prepared a feast for their reception, but of this no more need be said.
Wu the Scholar secretly conveyed orders to the group, instructing them what to do on the third day, and what to do on the fifth day. When he had finished giving his commands, Sun Li and the others received the plan, and the party set out on their own to join the carts and troops and enter the Zhu Family Manor to carry out their scheme.
Wu the Scholar then said, "Send Superintendent Dai on a trip to the stronghold, and quickly bring these four chieftains here. I have a use for them."
If Wu Yong had not sent Dai Zong through the night to fetch these four men, what would have come of it? But hear the outcome: the Water Margin would gain new wings, and the mountain manor would never again wear its old guise.
Exactly which four men did Wu Yong send for? Listen to the explanation in the next chapter.
