While they were still talking, the young maid from his room arrived with a crimson felt cape, saying, "The elder mistress has just sent word that it has snowed and wishes to discuss inviting people to compose poems tomorrow." Before she had finished speaking, Li Wan's maid came to invite Daiyu. Baoyu then asked Daiyu to accompany him to Fragrant Rice Village. Daiyu changed into small red leather boots with gold-thread cloud patterns, put on a great red feathered gauze surcoat with white fox fur lining, tied a blue-gold and emerald double-ringed sash with the "four harmonies as you wish" pattern, and covered her head with a snow cap. The two of them walked together through the snow. They saw all the young ladies gathered there, all wearing crimson felt or feathered satin capes, except that Li Wan wore a blue kersey unlined jacket, and Xue Baochai wore a pale lilac surcoat with lotus-pattern brocade and foreign silk thread embroidery; Xing Fujiu still wore her everyday old clothes with no snow gear at all. Presently Shi Xiangyun arrived, wearing a large overcoat that Grandmother Jia had given her, with a marten-face outer surface and black squirrel fur lining, lined throughout with fur, and on her head she wore a "Lady of the Frontier" hood of yellow-gold cloud-patterned brocade lined with crimson felt, and around her neck a great marten-fur collar. Daiyu laughed first and said, "Look, the Monkey King has come! He too has put on a snow coat, deliberately dressing up like a little Tartar." Xiangyun laughed and said, "Look at what I'm wearing underneath." As she spoke, she took off her overcoat. They saw that underneath she wore a half-new three-trimmed collar short jacket of autumn incense color with gold-thread embroidery and five-color dragon patterns, narrow lapels and cuffs, lined with silver squirrel fur, and inside that a short skirt of water-red figured saten with fox-fur trim, her waist tightly bound with a butterfly-knotted long-tasseled five-color palace sash, and on her feet she wore small doeskin boots, which made her all the more slender-waisted and narrow-shouldered, with a figure like a crane and a form like a mantis. Everyone laughed and said, "She alone loves dressing up like a boy—she's actually more handsome dressed as a boy than as a girl." Xiangyun said, "Quick, let's discuss the poetry! I want to know who's hosting." Li Wan said, "It's my idea. I thought yesterday's proper day has already passed, and waiting for the next proper day is too far off, and since it has snowed so conveniently, why don't we all gather in a poetry club—it will both welcome them and allow us to compose poems. What do you think?" Baoyu said first, "That's a good idea. But today is too late; if we wait until tomorrow, it will be boring if it clears up." Everyone observed, "This snow may not clear; even if it does, what fell overnight is enough to enjoy." Li Wan said, "Although this place of mine is nice, it's not as good as Reed Snow Retreat. I've already sent people to light the floor brazier. Let us all sit around the brazier and compose poems. The Old Lady probably won't be pleased, and besides, we're just having a little fun—we'll just send word to Sister Feng. One or two taels of silver from each of you will be enough—bring it to me." Pointing at Xiangling, Baoqin, Li Wen, Li Qi, and Fujiu, she said, "These five don't count; among us, Second Sister is ill so she doesn't count, and Fourth Sister has asked leave so she doesn't count either. The rest of you four send your shares, and I'll cover five or six taels in total, which will be more than enough." Baochai and the others all agreed. They then discussed setting the theme and rhyme scheme. Li Wan laughed and said, "I've already decided in my own mind—when the time comes tomorrow, we'll know." After this, they chatted a while longer, then went to Grandmother Jia's quarters. Nothing else happened that day.
The next morning, Baoyu, who had been thinking about this matter, had not slept well all night and got up as soon as it was light. He drew back the bed curtains and saw that although the doors and windows were still shut, the window was brilliantly lit. His heart immediately began to waver, and he grumbled that it must have cleared up and the sun was already out. He hurriedly got up and lifted the window panel, looking out through the glass window. It turned out not to be sunlight at all—it had snowed heavily all night, more than a foot deep, and the sky was still flinging down cottony wisps of snow. Baoyu was overjoyed. He quickly called for people to get up. After washing and rinsing, he put on only a purple kersey fox-fur lined jacket, covered it with a small sea-dragon leather vest, tied his waist, wore the jade-needle straw cape, put on the golden rattan hat, and stepped into sandalwood clogs, hurrying off to Reed Snow Retreat. When he left the courtyard gate and looked around, there was no second color—far off were green pines and emerald bamboo, and he himself felt as though he were encased in a glass box. He then walked down the slope, and just as he turned along the foot of the hill, he caught a whiff of cold fragrance brushing his nose. Turning his head, he saw that at Miaoyu's Bamboo Green Nunnery, a dozen or so red plum trees, like rouge against the snow, looked exceptionally spirited and most delightful! Baoyu stopped and admired them carefully for a while before moving on. He saw someone coming across the Narrow-Waist Plank Bridge holding an umbrella—it was the person Li Wan had sent to invite Xifeng.
When Baoyu arrived at Reed Snow Retreat, he saw the maids and servants already sweeping the snow and clearing a path. Reed Snow Retreat was built on a riverside bank near the mountain—a few rooms with thatched eaves and earthen walls, a hedge of rose of Sharon and bamboo window frames; one could fish by simply opening the window. It was surrounded all around by reeds, and a winding path led through the reeds and rushes to the bamboo bridge of the Pavilion of Lotus Fragrance. The maids and servants, seeing him come wearing a straw cape and rattan hat, laughed and said, "We were just saying we were missing a fisherman, and now we're all complete. The young ladies haven't come yet after their meal—you're too impatient." Hearing this, Baoyu had no choice but to return. When he reached Seeping Fragrance Pavilion, he saw Tanchun coming from Autumn Studio, wrapped in a crimson felt cape, wearing a Guanyin hood, leaning on a young maid, with a woman behind holding a blue silk oil umbrella. Baoyu knew she was going to Grandmother Jia's quarters, so he stood by the pavilion and waited for her to arrive, and the two of them left the garden together. Baoqin was in the inner room washing and changing her clothes.

Chapter 49
A World of Glittering Snow and Crimson Plum Blossom
The Beauty-loving Girls Feast on Raw Flesh
Xiangling, who had been listening to the others' banter, stepped forward with a smile. "Look at this poem," she said. "If it's good enough, I'll keep studying. If it's still no good, I might as well give up writing poetry altogether." She handed the poem to Daiyu and the others to read. It read:
Its essence too bright to be concealed—
Its shadow graceful, its spirit cold.
Through a thousand acres of white, a pestle strikes;
The half-moon fades as the cock crows at dawn.
In a green straw coat, someone plays the flute on the river in autumn;
In crimson sleeves, a lady leans on the rail at night.
If Chang'e were asked about it,
Why does she not let us be forever whole?
The others laughed. "This poem is not only good but also fresh and clever. As the saying goes, 'Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it.' The poetry club will surely have you now." Xiangling was doubtful at heart, thinking they were just humoring her, so she kept pressing Daiyu and Baochai for their honest opinion.
While they were talking, several young maids and old serving women came bustling up, all smiling. "A whole crowd of young ladies and mistresses have arrived, and we don't recognize any of them! You'd better go and welcome your relatives quickly!" Li Wan laughed. "What are you talking about? Speak clearly—whose relatives are they?" The serving women and maids all smiled. "Two of your aunt's daughters have come. There's also a young lady who says she's Miss Xue's younger sister, and a young gentleman who says he's Master Xue's brother. I'm off to inform the mistress now—you go on ahead first." With that, they left. Baochai smiled. "Could it be Xue Ke and his sister?" Li Wan also smiled. "Could our aunt have come to the capital too? It's strange that they would all happen to arrive at the same time." Puzzled, they went to Lady Wang's main quarters, where they found the place packed with people.
It turned out that Xing's elder brother and his wife had brought their daughter, Xing Yan, to the capital to seek refuge with Xing. As it happened, Sister Feng's elder brother, Wang Ren, was also coming to the capital, and the two families had been traveling together for mutual support. When they stopped their boat midway, they happened to encounter Li Wan's widowed aunt, who was also heading to the capital with her two daughters—the elder named Li Wen and the younger named Li Qi. When they exchanged greetings, they discovered they were related, so the three families traveled together all the way. Later, Xue Pan's younger cousin, Xue Ke, whose father had betrothed his younger sister, Xue Baoqin, to the son of Grand Secretary Mei while still in the capital, was also coming to the capital to arrange the wedding. Hearing that Wang Ren was traveling to the capital, he brought his sister and followed close behind. And so they all arrived on the same day to visit their various relatives. After the formal greetings, the Lady Dowager and Lady Wang were overjoyed. The Lady Dowager said with a laugh, "No wonder the lamp-spirit burst and blossomed again and again last night—it was an omen for today!" They chatted about family matters, examined the gifts that had been brought, and ordered food and wine to be prepared for the guests. Sister Feng was, of course, busier than ever. Li Wan and Baochai naturally spent time with their aunt and cousins, recounting the feelings of their separation. Daiyu was at first delighted, but then it occurred to her that everyone had family relations while she alone had no one, and she could not help shedding tears again. Baoyu understood her feelings perfectly and consoled her at length before she was comforted.
Then Baoyu hurried back to Happy Red Court and said to Xiren, Sheyue, and Qingwen with a smile, "Hurry up and go see for yourselves! Who would have thought that Miss Bao's own brother would look the way he does, while his cousin is a completely different sort of person in looks and bearing—he's more like Miss Bao's own brother! And the strangest thing is, you've always said that Miss Bao is a woman of unrivaled beauty, but now look at his sister, and the two daughters of the elder mistress—I'm at a loss for words! O Heaven, O Heaven, how much essence and divine beauty did you pour into creating these supreme beings! I realize now that I'm a frog at the bottom of a well. I've always said that the people around me were the one and the best, but I didn't have to look far—right here in our own garden, each one outdoes the last. I've gained a whole new level of understanding. Besides these few, could there possibly be any others?" As he spoke, he laughed and sighed to himself. Xiren, seeing that he was in another of his trances, refused to go look. Qingwen and the others had already gone and come back, and they said to Xiren with a grin, "You'd really better go and look! The elder mistress's niece, Miss Bao's younger sister, and the two daughters of the elder mistress—they're like a bundle of four slender spring onions!"
Before he had finished speaking, Tanchun came in, also smiling, looking for Baoyu. "Our poetry club is flourishing!" she said. Baoyu laughed. "Exactly. It was you who got the idea of starting the club, and that's how all these people were sent to us, as if by spirits. But there's one thing—I wonder if they've studied how to write poetry." Tanchun replied, "I've just asked them all. Though they were modest about it, from the way they carry themselves, it's clear none of them can't do it. And even if some couldn't, that wouldn't be hard to remedy—just look at Xiangling." Xiren smiled. "They say Miss Xue's younger sister is even better. What do you think, Third Miss?" Tanchun said, "It's true. In my view, even her elder sister and all the others put together can't match her." Xiren, surprised, laughed again. "How strange! Where could anyone better possibly come from? I must go and have a look." Tanchun said, "The old lady took one look at her and was so delighted she couldn't bear to part with her. She's already pressed Lady Wang to adopt her as a foster daughter. The old lady wants to raise her herself, and it's already been settled." Baoyu asked eagerly, "Is this really true?" Tanchun said, "When have I ever told a lie?" and added with a smile, "Now that she has this wonderful granddaughter, she's forgotten about this grandson." Baoyu laughed. "That's only right. Daughters ought to be cherished more. The sixteenth of next month—that's when we should launch the club." Tanchun said, "Sister Lin has only just gotten up from her sickbed, and Second Sister is ill too. Things are all unsettled." Baoyu said, "Second Sister doesn't write much poetry anyway; it won't matter if she's not there." Tanchun said, "Wait a few more days. Once the newcomers have gotten settled and feel at home, wouldn't it be better to invite them too? Right now, Sister-in-law Li and Sister Bao-chai naturally aren't in the mood for poetry. Besides, Xiangyun hasn't come yet, and Pin-erh has only just recovered—everyone's not quite up to it. Better wait until Sister Yun arrives, the newcomers are familiar with everyone, Pin-erh is much better, Sister-in-law Li and Sister Bao-chai have more leisure, and Xiangling's poetry has improved—then invite everyone for a full session. Wouldn't that be better? Let's both go to the old lady's place now and listen. Setting aside Sister Bao-chai's younger sister, she's certain to stay with us for good. If the other three aren't staying here, we can coax the old lady to let them remain in the garden. Then we'd have several more people, and it would be even more fun." Baoyu, listening, was overjoyed, his face beaming. "You're the one with sense. I'm muddle-headed to the end—I get excited for a moment but never think things through like that."
With that, brother and sister went together to the old lady's quarters.
As it turned out, Lady Wang had already adopted Bao-qin as her foster daughter, and the old lady was overjoyed. She would not let her live in the garden but had her sleep in her own quarters at night. Xue Ke went to live in Xue Pan's study. The old lady said to Lady Xing, "Your niece need not go home either. Let her stay in the garden for a few days and enjoy herself before she leaves." Xing's brother and his wife had been struggling at home, and when they came to the capital, they had relied on Lady Xing to arrange housing and help with expenses. Hearing this, they were only too pleased. Lady Xing handed over Xiuyan to Phoenix. Phoenix calculated that there were many girls in the garden, each with a different temperament, and it wouldn't be convenient to set up separate quarters for her. She would be better off staying with Yingchun. If anything went wrong for Xing Xiuyan later, even if Lady Xing found out, it wouldn't be Phoenix's responsibility. From then on, if Xing Xiuyan stayed in the garden for a full month, not counting days she went home, Phoenix would give her the same allowance as Yingchun. Phoenix observed Xiuyan closely and found that her character and conduct were nothing like Lady Xing's or her parents'. She was gentle and kind-hearted, someone worth cherishing. Phoenix therefore pitied her for her poverty and hard fate and treated her with more warmth than the other girls, while Lady Xing made no objection.
The old lady and Lady Wang had always admired Li Wan for her virtue and devotion in remaining a widow from a young age, commanding everyone's respect. Now that her widowed aunt had arrived, they would not let her live elsewhere. Though Li Wan's aunt was most unwilling, the old lady was so insistent that she had no choice but to stay in Sweet Rice Village with Li Wen and Li Qi.
Once these arrangements had been made, who should appear but Sh Bin, the Marquis of Baoling, who had been appointed to a high post in another province and would soon be leaving with his family. The old lady, unwilling to part with Xiangyun, kept her and brought her home, intending to have Phoenix set up separate quarters for her. But Xiangyun insisted on living with Bao-chai instead, so the matter was dropped.
By now the Prospect Garden was livelier than ever. Li Wan was the eldest, and the rest were Yingchun, Tanchun, Xichun, Bao-chai, Dai-yu, Xiangyun, Li Wen, Li Qi, Bao-qin, Xing Xiuyan, plus Phoenix and Baoyu—thirteen in all. When they compared ages, except for Li Wan, who was the oldest, the other twelve were all between fifteen and seventeen. Some three of them were the same age, some five shared the same birth year, some two had been born on the same day and month, and some two had been born at the same hour and minute—the differences were mostly only a matter of months, days, or hours. Even they themselves couldn't sort it all out precisely, so they simply called each other "younger brother," "older brother," "elder sister," or "younger sister" at random.
Now Xiangling was utterly consumed with the desire to write poetry, yet she did not dare to pester Baochai too much. As luck would have it, Shi Xiangyun arrived. Xiangyun was an exceedingly talkative girl, and how could she resist when Xiangling came to her for advice on poetry? Elated, she launched into high-flown discussions day and night without cease. Baochai said with a laugh, "I truly cannot stand this racket any longer. A young lady, treating poetry as a serious matter—let a learned person hear of it and they'd laugh at her for not knowing her proper place. Xiangling hasn't finished making a fuss, and now you've to be added—this talking sack! All day long it's nothing but: 'How Du Fu is somber and profound, Wei Yingwu elegant and unadorned, Wen Tingyun ornate and lavish, Li Shangyin obscure and recondite.' Here we have two living poets right before us, and you never mention them—instead you drag up all the dead ones! What for!" Xiangyun, hearing this, quickly asked with a laugh, "Which two? Good sister, tell me!" Baochai said, laughing, "The daft Xiangling, so earnest in heart; the mad Xiangyun, so many words!" Xiangling and Xiangyun both laughed.
Just then, Baoqin arrived, wearing a cape that glittered magnificently in gold and green—no one could tell what it was made of. Baochai quickly asked, "Where did you get this?" Baoqin replied with a laugh, "Because of the snowflakes, the Old Lady found this and gave it to me." Xiangling stepped forward to look and said, "No wonder it's so beautiful—it's woven from peacock feathers." Xiangyun said, "That's not peacock feather at all—it's made from the head feathers of wild ducks. You can see how the Old Lady dotes on her. Even Baoyu, whom she loves so much, wasn't given one to wear." Baochai said, "As the common saying goes, 'Each person has their own karma.' She never expected him to arrive at this moment, and now that he's here, the Old Lady is so fond of him." Xiangyun said, "You spend all your time either in front of the Old Lady or in the Garden, amusing yourself and eating and drinking in these two places. But when you go to Lady Wang's quarters, if she's there, feel free to chat with her and stay a while longer—no harm done. But if she's not there, don't go in. The people in that house have wicked hearts—they're all out to do us harm." This made Baochai, Baoqin, Xiangling, Yinger, and all the others laugh. Baochai said with a laugh, "People say you have no heart, yet you do have one. Though you have a heart, your tongue is too blunt. Our Qiner here is rather like you. You've been asking me every day to be your real sister—today I'll have you acknowledge her as your real sister instead." Xiangyun studied Baoqin for a long moment, then said with a laugh, "This garment only suits her. If anyone else wore it, they truly wouldn't deserve it." Just then, Hupo came over, laughing. "The Old Lady says: Miss Bao mustn't keep Miss Qin on too tight a rein. She's still young—let her do as she pleases. If she wants anything, she should just ask for it. Don't take offense." Baochai quickly rose to answer, then nudged Baoqin with a laugh. "You don't even know what fortune has brought you! Go on, then—take care that we don't wrong you somehow. I refuse to believe I'm inferior to you in any way." As they spoke, Baoyu and Daiyu both came in, and Baochai was still laughing and teasing. Xiangyun said with a laugh, "Sister Bao, though you're joking, there's actually someone who truly feels that way in earnest." Hupo said, laughing, "The only one who's truly annoyed is him." She pointed at Baoyu as she spoke. Baochai and Xiangyun both laughed and said, "He's not that sort of person." Hupo added, laughing, "If not him, then her." She pointed at Daiyu. Xiangyun fell silent. Baochai quickly said with a laugh, "Still less so. My sister and his sister are the same to him. He likes her even more than he loves me—how could he be annoyed? You're just talking nonsense. His mouth has no proof to back it up."
Baoyu knew well by long experience that Daiyu could be somewhat petty, and he was still unaware of the recent understanding between Daiyu and Baochai. He had been worried that if the Old Lady showed favor to Baoqin, Daiyu would feel slighted. Now hearing Xiangyun say this and Baochai answer thus, and observing Daiyu's expression—which was indeed different from her usual self, just as Baochai's words suggested—he felt a dull confusion in his heart. He thought to himself: "These two were never this close before, yet now they seem ten times closer than anyone else." At that moment, Lin Daiyu went up to Baoqin and called her "sister" without using her surname, treating her exactly like a real sister. Baoqin, being young and warm-hearted, naturally intelligent, having been raised on books since childhood, had now been in the Jia household for two days and had come to know most of the people. She saw that none of the young ladies were frivolous, superficial girls, and moreover that they all got along well with her sister, so she did not treat any of them lightly. Among them, she found Lin Daiyu to be outstanding above all others, and so she became especially close and respectful toward Daiyu. Baoyu watched all this with silent wonder.
After Baochai and her sister went to visit Aunt Xue for a while, Xiangyun came to Grandmother Jia's quarters, and Lin Daiyu returned to her room to rest. Baoyu then went to find Daiyu and said with a smile, "I've read *The Romance of the Western Chamber*, and there were a few lines I understood well enough to tease you with—you were upset at the time. But now there's one line I still don't quite understand. Let me read it to you, and you can explain it to me." Daiyu, sensing something behind his words, said with a smile, "Go ahead, read it to me." Baoyu said, "In the scene 'The Clandestine Meeting,' there's a line that's the best of all: 'When did Meng Guang receive Liang Hong's proposal?' This line is truly wonderful. 'Meng Guang received Liang Hong's proposal'—those five words are just a ready-made allusion. What's remarkable is how those three empty words, 'When did,' make the question so charming. 'When did she receive it?' Tell me—what do you think?" Daiyu couldn't help laughing and said, "It's a well-asked question. She asked it well, and you asked it well too." Baoyu said, "At first you only suspected me. Now you have nothing to say, and I'm the one left out in the cold." Daiyu said with a laugh, "Who would have thought she was truly a good person? I always assumed she was hiding something deceitful." She then told Baoyu in detail about how she had misspoken during the drinking game, and everything they had discussed when Baochai had sent her the bird's nest during her illness. Only then did Baoyu understand the reason for it all, and he said with a smile, "So that's it! I was wondering, 'When did Meng Guang receive Liang Hong's proposal?'—and it turns out the proposal was accepted right back when 'the child's mouth has no gatekeeper.'" Daiyu then spoke of Baoqin, and thinking that she herself had no sister, she couldn't help but cry again. Baoyu quickly consoled her, "You're only bringing trouble upon yourself again. Look at you—you've grown even thinner than last year, and you still don't take care of yourself. Every day, if things are going well, you deliberately go looking for something to fret about and must have a good cry before you consider the day complete." Daiyu wiped her tears and said, "Lately I've only felt a soreness in my heart, though it seems my tears are actually fewer than last year. My heart keeps aching, but the tears don't come as freely." Baoyu said, "That's just because you've cried so often that your heart doubts itself. How could your tears actually run dry!"
Just as they were talking, a maid from his room arrived with a scarlet felt cloak and said, "The Elder Mistress-in-law has just sent word—it's snowing, and she wants to discuss inviting people to compose poems tomorrow." Before she had finished speaking, a maid from Li Wan came to invite Daiyu. Baoyu then asked Daiyu to accompany him to Rice-Scented Village. Daiyu changed into a pair of small red-leather boots embroidered with gold clouds, put on a great red chenille cloak lined with white fox fur, bound her waist with a bright-blue-and-embroidered-green ribbon with interlocking rings and the "Four Harmonies as You Wish" pattern, and covered her head with a snow cap. The two set off together through the snow. When they arrived, they found all the young ladies already there, all wearing scarlet felt or feather-woven cloaks of the same red hue, with only Li Wan wearing a blue serge buttoned jacket and Xue Baochai wearing a pale mauve crêpe cloak with an added-flower weave of foreign silk and Western felt; Xing Xiuyon was still in her ordinary everyday clothes, with no garment to keep off the snow. Presently Shi Xiangyun arrived, wearing a great coat of marten-faced leather lined with black squirrel fur, given to her by the Dowager, with a "Lady Zhaojun" hood of yellow-gold-threaded brocade lined with scarlet felt, and a large marten-fur neckpiece wound about her. Daiyu was the first to laugh and say, "Look at them—Sun Wukong has arrived! He's got a snow coat just like the others, but he's deliberately playing the little Tartar to show off." Xiangyun laughed and say, "See how I'm dressed underneath!" As she spoke, she slipped off her great coat. They saw that she was wearing a half-new three-trimmed collar short jacket of a cinnamon-brown shade with gold-threaded five-color embroidered dragons, narrow lapels and tucked-in sleeves, lined with silver rat-fur, and beneath it a short petticoat of water-red figured satin lined with fox belly-fur, her waist tightly bound with a butterfly-knotted long-tasseled five-color palace ribbon, and on her feet a pair of doeskin boots—making her all the more strikingly narrow-waisted, broad-shouldered, and lithe in figure. Everyone laughed and said, "She always loves to dress up as a boy—she's actually prettier dressed as a lad than she ever was as a girl." Xiangyun said, "Quick, let's discuss the poetry session! Whose turn is it to host?" Li Wan said, "It's my idea. The proper day for the last session was yesterday, and waiting for the next proper day would be too far off. Since it happens to be snowing, why don't we all get together for a club meeting—that will serve as a welcome for the newcomers and we can compose poems too. What do you all think?" Baoyu said at once, "That's a good idea. But it's too late today—if we wait until tomorrow, it might clear up and that would be no fun." The others looked out and said, "This snow isn't likely to clear. Even if it does, what fell overnight will be enough to enjoy." Li Wan said, "Though this place is nice, it's not as good as the Reed Snow Hermitage. I've already sent people to light the floor-warming stove. We can all sit around the brazier and compose poetry. The Dowager probably won't feel up to it, and besides, we're just having a bit of fun—we need only send word to Sister Feng. One tael of silver from each of you will be enough—send it to me here." She pointed to Xiangling, Baoqin, Li Wen, Li Qi, and Xiuyon. "Five of you don't count as regular members. Among our own people, Second Sister is sick, so she doesn't count, and Fourth Sister has asked for leave, so she doesn't count either. The four of you send your shares, and I'll manage with five or six taels of silver altogether." Baochai and the others all agreed. Then they discussed setting the theme and rhyme scheme. Li Wan laughed and said, "I've already decided in my own mind—we'll know for certain when we get there tomorrow." After this they chatted for a while, then went to pay their respects to the Dowager. Nothing else happened that day. The next morning, Baoyu, having been so preoccupied with the thought of the poetry session, had slept poorly all night and rose as soon as it was light. Throwing back the bed-curtains, he saw that though the doors and windows were still shut, a dazzling brilliance shone through them, and his heart at once began to waver—he grumbled that it must have cleared and the sun was already out. Hastily getting up, he lifted the window sash and looked out through the glass. It was not sunlight at all—overnight, a great snow had fallen, more than a foot thick, and the sky was still plucking and pulling at the downy flakes. Baoyu was overjoyed. He quickly roused the servants, washed and dressed, and putting on only a purple serge fox-lined jacket, a small otter-skin vest over海龙 fur, binding his waist, donning the jade-needle cape and golden-rattan hat, and stepping into sandalwood clogs, he hurried off to the Reed Snow Hermitage. When he left the courtyard gate and looked around, there was no second color anywhere—far off were green pines and emerald bamboos, while he himself felt as though he were encased in a glass box. He walked down the slope and had just turned the foot of the hill when a cold fragrance brushed his nose. Turning his head, he saw that in the Green Bower Hermitage before Miaoyu's door, a dozen or so red plum trees, like rouge against the snow, looked especially spirited and wonderfully charming! Baoyu stood still and admired them for a while before moving on. He saw someone crossing the Bee-Waist Bridge under an umbrella—it was the person Li Wan had sent to invite Xifeng. Baoyu arrived at the Reed Snow Hermitage to find the maids and old servants clearing a path through the snow. The Reed Snow Hermitage was built on a riverside bank beside the mountain—a row of several rooms with thatched roofs and earthen walls, a hedge of rose-of-Sharon and bamboo-framed windows; one could fish right from the window. It was surrounded on all sides by reeds, and a winding path led through the reeds and rushes to the bamboo bridge of the Pavilion of Fragrant Lotuses. The maids and old servants, seeing him arrive wearing a cape and hat, laughed and said, "We were just saying we needed one more fisherman—now we're complete. The young ladies haven't come yet, they'll come after breakfast. You're too impatient." Hearing this, Baoyu had to turn back. He had just reached the Seeping Fragrance Pavilion when he saw Tanchun coming from the Studio of Autumn Freshness, wrapped in a great scarlet felt cloak, wearing a Guanyin hood, leaning on a little maid, with a woman behind holding a blue-silk oil umbrella. Baoyu knew she was going to the Dowager's quarters, so he stood by the pavilion to wait for her, and the two of them left the garden together. Baoqin was inside, washing and changing her clothes.
Presently all the girls arrived, and Baoyu kept clamoring for food, repeatedly urging them to hurry up the meal. After what seemed an age, the dishes were finally served, the first being steamed lamb in milk. The Lady Dowager said, "This is a tonic for us old folks — a creature that has never seen the light of day. I'm sorry you young children can't eat it. We have fresh venison today, which you can look forward to." Everyone agreed. But Baoyu could not wait; he simply poured tea over a bowl of rice and hastily gulped it down with a pickle of wild chicken and melon. The Lady Dowager said, "I know you all have something on your minds today, you can't even be bothered to eat your meal properly." She then told them to "save the venison for him to eat in the evening," but Sister Feng quickly said "there is plenty more," and that settled the matter. Shi Xiangyun whispered to Baoyu, "Since we have fresh venison, why don't we ask for a piece and cook it ourselves in the Garden? We can have fun and eat at the same time." Baoyu was only too delighted and immediately asked Sister Feng for a piece, ordering the old servant woman to carry it into the Garden.
After a while, when the company dispersed, they all went into the Garden and assembled at the Reed Snow Retreat, where Li Wan was to set the subject and assign the rhyme. But Xiangyun and Baoyu were nowhere to be found. Daiyu said, "Those two never manage to be together without something happening. They must be plotting about that venison." Even as she spoke, Li Wan's sister-in-law came along to watch the fun and asked Li Wan, "Why is that jade-wearing young master and that gold-phoenix-wearing young lady — both so clean and pretty and with plenty to eat — huddled somewhere discussing eating raw meat, talking away so earnestly? I simply cannot believe that meat can be eaten raw." Everyone laughed when they heard this. "How dreadful! Quick, fetch them!" Daiyu said with a smile, "This is all Miss Xiangyun's doing. My divination never fails."
Li Wan and the others hurried out and found the two. "If you want to eat it raw," Li Wan said, "I'll take you to the Old Lady to eat all you like. If you eat a whole raw deer and make yourselves ill, don't blame me. It's bitterly cold and snowing hard — you're making trouble for me." Baoyu said with a laugh, "Nothing of the sort. We're going to roast it." Li Wan said, "Oh, that's all right then." Presently the servants brought an iron stove, iron forks, and iron-wire mesh. Li Wan said, "Mind you don't cut your hands, and don't you dare cry!" With that, she and Tanchun went back inside.
Sister Feng sent Ping'er to say that she could not come, as she was busy distributing the year-end allowances. Xiangyun spotted Ping'er and was not about to let her go. Ping'er was a fun-loving girl herself; she had always followed Sister Feng everywhere and done everything with her. Finding this great sport, she was delighted to join in, so she slipped off the bracelets from her wrists, and the three of them gathered around the fire, ready to roast three pieces and start eating first. Baochai and Daiyu, who were used to such things, thought nothing of it, but Baoqin, Li Wan's sister-in-law, and the others found it quite remarkable. Tanchun and Li Wan had already decided on the subject and rhymes. Tanchun said with a smile, "Can you smell it? The fragrance reaches even here. I'm going to have some too." She went to join them. Li Wan came along too, saying, "All the guests are here. Haven't you eaten enough?" As she ate, Xiangyun said, "When I eat this, I love to drink wine, and only after drinking wine can I write poetry. If it weren't for this venison, I certainly couldn't write a poem today." At that moment, they saw Baoqin standing there laughing, wearing her duck-down cape. Xiangyun said with a laugh, "You silly thing, come and taste this." Baoqin said playfully, "It's too dirty." Baochai said, "Try it — it's delicious. Your Sister Lin is too weak; she can't digest it, otherwise she'd love it too." Baoqin tried a piece and, finding it truly delicious, went on eating. Presently Sister Feng sent a young maid to fetch Ping'er. Ping'er said, "Miss Shi won't let me go. You go ahead." The maid left. Soon Sister Feng herself came, wearing a cloak, and said with a laugh, "You're eating such good things and didn't even tell me!" She squeezed in and joined them. Daihu said with a laugh, "Where did you find this whole troop of beggars? Enough, enough! The Reed Snow Retreat has suffered a calamity today — utterly ruined by Miss Xiangyun. I weep for the Reed Snow Retreat!" Xiangyun said with a sneer, "What do you know? 'A true scholar is naturally refined.' You're all fake puritans — the most tiresome people. Here we are, feasting on meat and carousing, and when we come back we'll produce poetry of exquisite beauty." Baochai said with a laugh, "If you turn out a bad poem later, we'll dig out that meat and stuff these snow-laden reeds with it, to complete the retribution."
After this, they finished eating and washed up. When Ping'er put on her bracelets, she found one missing. They searched everywhere but could find no trace of it. Everyone was puzzled. Sister Feng said with a laugh, "I know where that bracelet has gone. You all just go and write your poems; we won't look for it. Just go ahead, and within three days it will surely turn up." She then asked, "What poem are you writing today? The Old Lady said the New Year is almost here — we should make up some lantern riddles for everyone to enjoy in the first month." Everyone laughed and said, "How could we have forgotten? Let's hurry and write some good ones now, to have ready for the New Year." They all went together into the heated-brick room, where cups, plates, fruit, and dishes were already laid out, and on the wall were posted the poem's subject, rhyme scheme, and format. Baoyu and Xiangyun hurried to look. The subject was: "A Linked Verse on the Scene: A Five-Character Regulated Poem of Eight Couplets, Rhyme 'Er Xiao.'" The order of contributors had not yet been listed. Li Wan said, "I'm not much good at poetry. I'll just write the opening three lines, and then whoever finishes first can link the next." Baochai said, "We must at least decide on an order." What happened next will be told in the following chapter.
