Chapter 44
Now, when Sun Quan remained uncertain and could not make up his mind, the Lady of Wu said to him, "My late elder sister left these words: 'Before he died,伯符 (Bo Fu) said: "If you are in doubt about internal affairs, consult Zhang Zhao; if you are in doubt about external affairs, consult Zhou Yu."' Why not summon Gongjin (Zhou Yu) and ask his counsel?" Quan was overjoyed and immediately sent an envoy to Poyang to request Zhou Yu's attendance for deliberations. Now Zhou Yu had been training naval forces at Poyang Lake. When he heard that Cao Cao's great army had reached Hangu, he hastened back by night to Chaisang Commandery to discuss military affairs. The envoy had not yet departed when Zhou Yu had already arrived first. Lu Su and Zhou Yu shared the deepest friendship, so Su came first to meet him and recounted all that had transpired in detail. Zhou Yu said, "Zi Jing (Zi Jing), do not worry. I have my own plan. Now we must quickly summon Zhuge Liang to meet with me."
Lu Su mounted his horse and left. Zhou Yu had just begun to rest when it was reported that Zhang Zhao, Zhang Hong, Bu Zhi, and Gu Yong had come to pay a visit. Zhou Yu received them into the hall, and after they had taken their seats and exchanged courtesies, Zhang Zhao said, "Does the Commander understand the advantages and disadvantages for Jiangdong?" Zhou Yu replied, "I do not." Zhao said, "Cao Cao commands a million troops and is encamped at Hangu. Yesterday a proclamation arrived here, inviting our lord to a hunting expedition at Jiangxia. Although he harbors designs of swallowing us up, he has not yet shown his true intentions. We, your ministers, urge our lord to submit, so as to spare Jiangdong from calamity. But Lu Zi Jing, coming from Jiangxia, brought Liu Bei's strategist Zhuge Liang with him. That man, seeking to vent his own resentment, has deliberately used provocative language to goad our lord. Zi Jing, for his part, remains obstinately blind to reason. We were just awaiting the Commander to render a final decision." Zhou Yu said, "Do all of you share this view?" Gu Yong and the others replied, "We are all of the same opinion." Zhou Yu said, "I too have long wished to surrender. Please return, gentlemen. Tomorrow morning, when I see our lord, a firm decision will be made."
Zhang Zhao and the others took their leave. Shortly afterward, it was reported that Cheng Pu, Gai Han, and Han Deng, along with a group of military officers, had come to see him. Zhou Yu received them and inquired after each in turn. Cheng Pu said, "Does the Commander know that Jiangdong will soon belong to another?" Zhou Yu said, "I do not know." Pu said, "We have followed Sun Jiangjun (Sun Ce) since he laid the foundation of this domain, fighting hundreds of battles, large and small, before we won the six commanderies. Now our lord, heeding the words of his strategists, wishes to surrender to Cao Cao. This is truly a matter of shame and regret. We would rather die than suffer such disgrace. We hope the Commander will persuade our lord to resolve upon war. We are willing to fight to the death." Zhou Yu said, "Do all the generals share this view?" Gai Han rose in anger and struck his forehead with his hand, crying, "My head may be severed, but I will never surrender to Cao!" All the others declared, "We are all unwilling to surrender." Zhou Yu said, "I am resolved to fight Cao Cao to the death—how could I ever surrender? Please return, generals. When I see our lord, I shall render a firm decision."
Cheng Pu and the others departed. Before long, Zhuge Jin, Lü Fan, and a group of civil officials came to wait upon him. Zhou Yu received them, and when courtesies had been exchanged, Zhuge Jin said, "My younger brother Zhuge Liang came from Han, saying that Liu Yuzhou (Liu Bei) wishes to ally with Dongwu to jointly attack Cao Cao. The civil and military officials have not yet reached a decision. Since my younger brother serves as an envoy, I dared not speak at length. I have been waiting specifically for the Commander to settle this matter." Zhou Yu said, "What is your own view?" Zhuge Jin said, "Those who surrender will find peace easily; those who fight will find it hard to preserve themselves." Zhou Yu smiled and said, "I have my own plan. Tomorrow we will all go to the prefectural offices to decide."
Zhuge Jin and the others withdrew. Then it was reported that Lü Meng, Gan Ning, and a group of others had come to see him. Zhou Yu invited them in and likewise discussed the matter with him. Some urged war, some urged surrender, and they argued among themselves. Zhou Yu said, "There is no need for more words. Tomorrow all will go to the prefectural offices for a public discussion." The group then departed. Zhou Yu continued to smile coldly.
At dusk, it was reported that Lu Zi Jing (Lu Su) had brought Zhuge Kongming (Zhuge Liang) to pay a visit. Zhou Yu came out through the middle gate to welcome them. After courtesies had been exchanged, host and guest took their seats. Su first asked Zhou Yu, "Now that Cao Cao is driving his forces south to invade, the two policies of peace and war remain undecided by our lord, who defers entirely to you, Commander. What is your view?" Zhou Yu said, "Cao Cao acts in the name of the Son of Heaven—his army cannot be opposed. Moreover, his power is great; he cannot be treated lightly. If we fight, we will certainly be defeated; if we surrender, we will find peace easily. My mind is made up. Tomorrow, when I see our lord, I shall send an envoy to offer our submission."
Lu Su was aghast and said, "You are mistaken, my lord! The foundation of Jiangdong has passed through three generations—how can it be cast away to another in a single day? Bo Fu's dying words entrusted external affairs to you, Commander. Now we look to you to preserve the state, to be our Mount Tai of support. How can you follow the counsel of a coward?" Zhou Yu said, "Jiangdong's six commanderies contain countless living souls. If they suffer the calamity of war, they will surely lay the blame upon me. For this reason, I have resolved to seek surrender." Su said, "Not so. Given the Commander's heroism and Dongwu's natural defenses, Cao Cao may not necessarily achieve his aims."
As the two argued back and forth, Zhuge Liang merely stood to one side with his hands in his sleeves, smiling coldly. Zhou Yu said, "Why does the Master smile?" Zhuge Liang said, "I am not smiling at anyone else—I am smiling at Zi Jing for failing to recognize the trend of the times." Su said, "Why does the Master instead laugh at me for failing to recognize the trend of the times?" Zhuge Liang said, "Gongjin's (Zhou Yu's) intention is to surrender to Cao—this is most reasonable." Zhou Yu said, "Kongming (Zhuge Liang) is a man who recognizes the trend of the times; he and I must share the same view." Su said, "Kongming, how can you say this as well?" Zhuge Liang said, "Cao Cao is supremely skilled in the use of troops—none in the world dares stand against him. In the past, only Lü Bu, Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, and Liu Biao dared oppose him. Now all of these have been destroyed by Cao—there is no one left in the world. Only Liu Yuzhou (Liu Bei), failing to recognize the trend of the times, stubbornly contends against him. Now, isolated at Jiangxia, his survival is not assured. If the Commander resolves to surrender to Cao Cao, he can protect his wife and children and preserve his wealth and honor. The fate of a dynasty is a matter of Heaven's will—why should it be worth lamenting?"
Lu Su burst out in anger, saying, "Would you have my lord bend his knee in humiliation before a traitor to the state?" Kongming replied, "I have a stratagem. It requires no leading of sheep and bearing of wine, no surrender of lands and seals; nor need you cross the river in person. Only a single envoy need be dispatched, in a small boat, to ferry two people to the river. If Cao Cao obtains these two, his million troops will all unbuckle their armor and furl their banners and retreat." Zhou Yu asked, "What two people could cause Cao Cao's troops to withdraw?" Kongming said, "For Jiangdong to lose these two people would be no more than a great tree losing a single leaf, or the Grand Granary losing a single grain of millet. But if Cao Cao obtains them, he will be overjoyed and will certainly withdraw."
Zhou Yu asked again, "Who exactly are these two people?" Kongming replied, "When I lived in Longzhong, I heard that Cao Cao had newly built a tower on the Zhang River, called the Bronze Sparrow Tower, of surpassing magnificence. He selected beautiful women from all under the realm to fill it. Cao Cao has always been a man of lust, and he long heard that the Qiao family of Jiangdong had two daughters—the elder called Da Qiao and the younger Xiao Qiao—with beauty that would make fish sink and wild geese alight, that would put the moon to shame and make flowers blush. Cao Cao once swore an oath: 'My first vow is to sweep pacify the four seas and accomplish the imperial enterprise; my second vow is to obtain the two Qiaos of Jiangdong and place them in the Bronze Sparrow Tower, to delight my old age—then I would die without regret!' Now though he leads a million troops and casts his tiger gaze south of the river, in truth he comes for these two women. Why does not the General seek out Lord Qiao, purchase the two women for a thousand pieces of gold, and send them to Cao Cao by messenger? Once he obtains them, his heart will be satisfied and he will surely withdraw his army. This is the same stratagem by which Fan Li presented Xi Shi to the king of Wu. Why not act on it at once?"
Zhou Yu said, "What proof is there that Cao Cao desires the two Qiaos?" Kongming replied, "Cao Cao's youngest son, Cao Zhi, whose courtesy name is Zijian, could compose essays the moment his brush touched paper. Cao Cao once ordered him to compose a rhapsody, called the 'Rhapsody of the Bronze Sparrow Tower.' The meaning of the rhapsody speaks plainly of his family's destiny to become the Son of Heaven, and his vow to take the two Qiaos." Zhou Yu asked, "Can you recall this rhapsody?" Kongming said, "I admired its literary beauty and memorized it in secret." Zhou Yu said, "Please recite it for me." Kongming then recited the "Rhapsody of the Bronze Sparrow Tower" at once:
From the bright rear, we roam and delight,
Ascending the layered tower to gladden our hearts.
Behold the vast opening of the Grand Precinct,
And observe what holy virtue has erected.
Lofty gates rise in towering grandeur,
Twin watchtowers float upon the pure azure.
A splendid observatory stands mid-heaven,
Linked to the soaring pavilions of the western wall.
Overlooking the long flow of the Zhang River,
And gazing upon the thriving fruit of the gardens.
Twin terraces are raised on left and right,
With the Jade Dragon and the Golden Phoenix.
We gather the two Qiaos from the southeast,
To share joy with them morning and evening.
Looking down upon the grandeur of the imperial city,
And gazing upon the drifting of the rosy clouds.
Rejoicing that all talents gather here,
Fulfilling the auspicious dream of the Flying Bear.
Rising to the gentle warmth of the spring breeze,
Hearing the mournful cry of a hundred birds.
The heavens stand firm and established,
And the family's wishes are doubly fulfilled.
Spread benevolent transformation through the universe,
And exercise solemn reverence in the capital.
Even the glory of Duke Huan and Duke Wen—
How could they compare to this sagely brilliance?
O wondrous and beautiful! Your grace reaches far and wide.
Aiding and supporting our imperial house,
Bringing peace to all four quarters.
As vast in measure as Heaven and Earth,
Equal in radiance to the sun and moon.
Forever noble and honored without limit,
Your lifespan equal to that of the Eastern Sovereign.
Driving the dragon banners to roam and wander,
Turning the phoenix carriage to circuit the land.
Kindness and transformation reach the four seas,
Good things abound and the people are at peace.
May this tower stand firm forever,
And joy endure without end!
When Zhou Yu had heard the recitation, he flew into a furious rage, rose from his seat, and pointing northward, cursed, "The old villain insults me beyond all bearing!" Kongming quickly rose and restrained him, saying, "In former times, the Xiongnu repeatedly invaded the borders, and the Son of Han gave a princess in marriage to make peace. Why then should you grudge two common women?" Zhou Yu said, "You do not know. Da Qiao is the wife of General Sun Bofu, and Xiao Qiao is my wife." Kongming feigned alarm and said, "I truly did not know. I spoke rashly—a death sentence! A death sentence!" Zhou Yu said, "I and the old villain cannot stand together under the same sky!" Kongming said, "You must think thrice before acting, lest you regret it." Zhou Yu said, "I received Bofu's entrustment—how could I ever yield my body to submit to Cao Cao? What I said just now was merely a test. Ever since I left Poyang Lake, I have harbored the ambition to march north. Though swords and axes be laid upon my head, I will not alter my resolve. I hope you, Kongming, will lend me your strength and together we will destroy Cao Cao." Kongming said, "If you do not reject me, I am willing to toil like a dog or horse, awaiting your commands morning and evening." Zhou Yu said, "Tomorrow, when I go before my lord, we will discuss raising troops." Kongming and Lu Su took their leave and departed.
The next morning, Sun Quan ascended the hall. On the left stood the civil officials—Zhang Zhao, Gu Yong, and more than thirty others; on the right stood the military officials—Cheng Pu, Huang Gai, and more than thirty others. Robes and caps were arrayed in splendid profusion; sword ornaments rang in gleaming harmony, as they stood in their respective ranks.
Shortly after, Zhou Yu entered to pay his respects. When the formal greetings had concluded, Sun Quan asked after him. Zhou Yu said, "I have lately heard that Cao Cao has led his troops to garrison the upper reaches of the Han, and has sent a dispatch here. What is your honored intention?" Quan at once handed the dispatch to Zhou Yu to read. When Zhou Yu had finished reading it, he laughed and said, "The old villain thinks Jiangdong has no men, and dares to insult us thus!" Quan said, "What is your opinion?" Zhou Yu said, "Has my lord discussed this with his civil and military officials?" Quan said, "We have deliberated on this matter for several days. Some urge me to surrender; some urge me to fight. My mind is undecided, and so I have asked you, Gongjin, to settle the matter." Zhou Yu said, "Who urges my lord to surrender?" Quan said, "Zhang Zibu and the others all hold that view." Zhou Yu then asked Zhang Zhao, "I would hear the reasons for your advocacy of surrender." Zhang Zhao said, "Cao Cao holds the Son of Heaven and campaigns in all quarters, ever acting in the name of the court; and having recently obtained Jingzhou, his power grows ever greater. The only thing by which Jiangdong can resist Cao Cao is the Yangtze River. But now Cao Cao has no less than a thousand war vessels, advancing by both water and land—how can we withstand them? It would be better to surrender for the present and make further plans later." Zhou Yu said, "This is the opinion of a pedantic scholar! Jiangdong has been established as a state and has now endured for three generations—how can we bear to abandon it in a single day!" Quan said, "Then what plan should we adopt?"
Yu said, "Though Cao Cao claims to be a minister of Han, he is in truth a traitor to the Han. You, General, with your divine martial prowess and heroic talents, building upon the legacy of your father and elder brother, hold the lands of Jiangdong. Your troops are elite and your provisions ample. This is the time to sweep across the realm and rid the nation of this tyrant and scourge—how then can you consider surrendering to this rebel? Moreover, Cao Cao has committed many fundamental errors in this campaign: First, the northern lands remain unsecured, with Ma Teng and Sui posing threats to his rear, yet he persists in a southern expedition—this is the first error. Second, the northern soldiers are unskilled in naval warfare; Cao Cao has abandoned his cavalry and relies on boats and oars to contend with Eastern Wu—this is the second error. Third, it is the depths of winter, and his horses have no forage—this is the third error. Fourth, he has driven the soldiers of the central plains far across the rivers and lakes; unaccustomed to the terrain and climate, many will fall ill—this is the fourth error. With so many errors committed, however numerous his forces, defeat is certain. The time to capture Cao Cao is now. I request several thousand elite troops to advance and garrison Xiakou, where I shall destroy him for you!"
Sun Quan rose with sudden vigor and said, "This old traitor has long sought to overthrow the Han and set himself upon the throne. The only ones he feared were the two Yuan brothers, Lü Bu, Liu Biao, and myself. Now those heroes are all destroyed, and only I remain. I and this old traitor cannot stand together under the same heavens! Your counsel to strike him accords perfectly with my own wishes. Heaven has sent you to me."
Yu said, "I pledge to fight to the death for your cause without hesitation. I only fear that you may waver in your resolve."
Sun Quan drew his sword and struck a corner off the document table before him. "Any officer or commander who speaks again of surrendering to Cao Cao shall share this table's fate!" With that, he bestowed the sword upon Zhou Yu, appointing Yu as Grand Commander, Cheng Pu as Vice Commander, and Lu Su as Army Counselor. Any civil or military officer who disobeyed orders was to be executed with this sword.
Having received the sword, Yu addressed the assembly: "By the command of our lord, I shall lead the army to destroy Cao Cao. All officers and officials are to assemble at the riverside camp tomorrow to receive their orders. Any who arrive late shall be dealt with according to the seven prohibitions and fifty-four articles of military law." With that, he took his leave of Sun Quan and departed the headquarters. The assembled officers dispersed in silence.
Zhou Yu returned to his quarters and at once invited Kongming for counsel. When Kongming arrived, Yu said, "The council today has reached its decision. I seek your strategy for destroying Cao Cao."
Kongming said, "The General's heart is not yet settled—no decision can be made."
Yu asked, "What do you mean, his heart is not settled?"
Kongming replied, "He fears the size of Cao Cao's army and harbors the thought that the few cannot prevail against the many. If you clarify the numbers for him and remove all doubt, then great matters may be accomplished."
Yu said, "Your counsel is excellent."
He then went again to see Sun Quan. Quan said, "Gongjin, coming at this hour, you must have urgent matters."
Yu said, "Tomorrow the troops will be deployed. Does my lord harbor any doubts?"
Quan said, "My only concern is that Cao Cao's army is too large—we are too few to match them. I have no other doubts."
Yu smiled and said, "It is precisely this that I have come to address. My lord, having read Cao Cao's declaration claiming a million troops by land and water, you are filled with suspicion and fear without considering the reality. Now let us examine the facts: The soldiers from the central plains number no more than a hundred and fifty or sixty thousand, and they are long exhausted. The forces gained from the Yuan clan amount to only seventy or eighty thousand, and many remain doubtful and unruled. To lead exhausted troops and command a wavering multitude—however great their numbers, they are not to be feared. With fifty thousand troops, I can destroy them. I beg my lord not to worry."
Sun Quan placed his hand on Yu's back and said, "Your words have fully dispelled my doubts. Zibu's lack of strategy has deeply disappointed me. Only you and Zijing share my heart. You may set out with Zijing and Cheng Pu at once. I shall follow with additional forces and ample provisions to support you. If your vanguard meets with difficulty, fall back to me, and I shall personally fight Cao Cao to the decision—I have no other doubts."
Zhou Yu thanked him and withdrew, thinking to himself, "Kongming has already divined the Lord of Wu's thoughts. His schemes surpass my own. In time he will become a threat to Jiangdong—better to have him killed." He sent for Lu Su by night and told him of his wish to kill Kongming.
Su said, "You cannot. With the tyrant Cao Cao not yet destroyed, to kill a worthy man would be to strip away our own support."
Yu said, "This man aids Liu Bei and will certainly become a threat to Jiangdong."
Su said, "Zhuge Jin is his elder brother. We could have him persuade Kongming to serve Eastern Wu as well—would that not be a splendid solution?"
Yu approved his counsel.
The next morning at dawn, Zhou Yu proceeded to the camp and took his seat in the high command tent. Executioners with blades and axes stood on either side as civil and military officers assembled to receive orders. Now Cheng Pu was older than Zhou Yu, yet Yu held the superior rank, and Cheng Pu was displeased. That day he feigned illness and sent his eldest son, Cheng Zi, in his place.
Yu addressed the assembled officers: "The law knows no favorites—let each of you attend to your duties. Today Cao Cao usurps authority, his crimes exceeding even those of Dong Zhuo. He holds the Emperor captive at Xuchang and stations brutal forces upon our borders. I have received the command to punish him. Let all of you strive forward with vigor. Wherever the army goes, the people must not be disturbed. Rewards and punishments shall be administered without favor or leniency."
Orders having been given, he dispatched Han Dang and Huang Gai as vanguard commanders, commanding their own warships to set out immediately and encamp at the三江口, there to await further orders. He assigned Jiang Qin and Zhou Tai as the second division; Ling Tong and Pan Zhang as the third; Taishi Ci and Lü Meng as the fourth; Lu Xun and Dong Xi as the fifth; Lü Fan and Zhu Zhi as inspectors of the four directions. He directed these six divisions to advance by both land and water, to converge at the appointed time.
The deployment complete, the officers set about preparing their ships and weapons and departed. Cheng Zi returned to his father Cheng Pu and described how Zhou Yu had organized the troops with precision and method. Cheng Pu was greatly astonished. "I always thought the Zhou Yu a weakling, unfit for command. That he can do this shows he is a true general! How can I not be convinced?" He went in person to the camp to offer his apologies, and Zhou Yu received him with gracious humility.
The next day, Zhou Yu invited Zhuge Jin and said to him, "Your younger brother Kongmin possesses the talent to assist a king, yet he humbles himself in service to Liu Bei. Fortunately, he has now come to Jiangdong. I would ask you, sir, not to spare your eloquence in persuading your brother to abandon Liu Bei and serve Eastern Wu instead. Thus our lord would gain an excellent minister, and you and your brother could be reunited. Would that not be wonderful? I trust you will go at once."
Zhuge Jin said, "Since my arrival in Jiangdong, I have been ashamed to have rendered no service whatsoever. Now that the Commander has given me a command, how dare I not do my utmost?" He mounted his horse at once and went straight to the post station to see Kongmin. Kongmin welcomed him in, and they wept and bowed to each other, each recounting the feelings of long separation.
Zhuge Jin said tearfully, "Brother, do you know the story of Bo Yi and Shu Qi?" Kongmin thought to himself, "This must be Zhou Yu's plan to send him and persuade me." He replied, "Bo Yi and Shu Qi were sages of antiquity." Zhuge Jin said, "Though Bo Yi and Shu Qi starved to death together at the foot of Mount Shouyang, at least the two brothers remained together in life and in death. You and I share the same womb, yet each of us serves a different master and cannot be together from morning to evening. When we consider how Bo Yi and Shu Qi lived, can we feel no shame?"
Kongmin said, "What you speak of, elder brother, is affection; what I hold to is righteousness. Both you and I are men of Han. Now Imperial Uncle Liu is of the imperial house of Han. If you were to leave Eastern Wu and join me in serving Imperial Uncle Liu, then you would be a loyal servant of Han without disgrace, and our flesh and blood could be reunited as well. This is a plan that fulfills both affection and righteousness. What do you think, brother?"
Zhuge Jin thought to himself, "I came to persuade him, but instead he has persuaded me." He had no reply and rose to take his leave. He returned to Zhou Yu and related in full everything Kongmin had said. Zhou Yu asked, "And what is your own wish?" Zhuge Jin said, "I have received the generous favor of General Sun—how could I ever turn my back on him?" Zhou Yu said, "Since you are wholeheartedly loyal to your lord, no more need be said. I have my own scheme to subdue Kongmin." Truly:
When wisdom meets with wisdom, they should unite,
When talent clashes with talent, they can ill abide.
But what was Zhou Yu's scheme to subdue Kongmin? Read on in the next chapter.
