監司出入,皂花藤杖掛宣牌;
家居千里,日不移時;
一望茫茫野水,週迴隱隱青山;
荒田寂寞,應無稚子看牛;

It will be seen that at the time Li Kui, gripping his saber, came forth to do battle with Li Yun. The two of them fought beside the main road for five or seven bouts, with neither gaining the upper hand. Zhu Fu then stepped between them with his saber and called out, "Stop fighting, both of you, and listen to me." The two men stayed their hands. Zhu Fu said, "Master, you should know that your disciple has received much undeserved kindness from you, and your instruction in the spear and staff has not gone unappreciated. But my elder brother Zhu Gui is now a chieftain at Liangshan Marsh, and he has received orders from 'Timely Rain' Song Jiang to come and look after Brother Li. If you had taken him and handed him over to the authorities, how could my brother return and face Song Jiang? That is why I resorted to this scheme. Just now Brother Li took advantage of the situation and wanted to do you harm, but I would not allow him to strike—it was only the soldiers we killed. We had planned to go far away, but then I reckoned that you would not be able to return and would surely come after us. I also thought of your daily kindness to me, and so I waited here for you. Master, you are a man of discernment—how could you not understand? Now you have caused the deaths of many men and let the 'Black Whirlwind' escape. How can you go back and face the county magistrate? If you return, you will certainly face prosecution, and no one will come to rescue you. You had better join us today, go up the mountain with us, and throw in your lot with Song Jiang. What do you say?"
Li Yun pondered for some time and then said, "Good brother, I am only afraid they will not accept me." Zhu Fu laughed and said, "Master, how can you not know of the great fame of 'Timely Rain' in Shandong? He specially seeks out worthy men and recruits heroes from all over the world." When Li Yun heard this, he sighed and said, "I have been cast out so that I have no home to flee to and no country to turn to. I have no wife or children, and I am not afraid of being arrested, so I will simply go with you." Li Kui then laughed and said, "Brother, why didn't you say so sooner?" He and Li Yun then performed the rites of obeisance. This Li Yun had never taken a wife or had a family, and no possessions either. The three of them joined forces and went to catch up with the cart. On the road they met Zhu Gui, who was overjoyed. The four heroes followed the cart and set forth, and there is nothing more to tell of their journey.
As they drew near the road to Liangshan Marsh, they were met by Ma Lin and Zheng Tianshou. After they had greeted each other, the two said, "Chao and Song, the two chieftains, sent us down the mountain again to find out news of you. Now that we have seen you, we will go back first and report." The two men then went up the mountain first to report. The next day, the four heroes, together with Zhu Fu's family, all came to the Great Hall of the Assembly of Righteousness at the main camp of Liangshan Marsh. Zhu Gui stepped forward and first led Li Yun to pay his respects to the two chieftains Chao and Song, and then to meet the other heroes. He said, "This man is a constable of Yishui County. His surname is Li, his given name is Yun, and his nickname is 'Blue-Eyed Tiger.'" After that, Zhu Gui led Zhu Fu to pay his respects to all the others and said, "This is my younger brother Zhu Fu, whose nickname is 'Smiling Tiger.'" They all greeted each other. Li Kui paid his respects to Song Jiang and was returned his two hand axes. He related how he had gone to fetch his mother at Yiling Ridge, where she was eaten by tigers, and how he had therefore killed four tigers. He also told of the incident where the false Li Kui, who had been waylaying travelers, was killed. Everyone laughed. Chao and Song both said with a smile, "You have killed four fierce tigers, and today our mountain stronghold has gained two living tigers. This truly calls for a celebration." All the heroes were greatly pleased and had sheep and horses slaughtered and a feast prepared to celebrate the arrival of the two new chieftains. Chao Gai then had them seated to the right of Bai Sheng.
Wu Yong said, "Recently the stronghold has prospered greatly, and heroes from all quarters have come to us drawn by our reputation—such is the virtue of Chao and Song and the fortune of all our brothers. Even so, I would ask Zhu Gui to resume management of the Shandong inn, replacing Shi Yong and Hou Jian. Zhu Fu's family should be given another house to live in. The affairs of the stronghold have now grown great and are no longer what they were in the old days. We should set up three more inns, whose sole purpose will be to gather intelligence on all matters, good and evil, and to receive righteous men who come to join us. If the imperial government sends soldiers to suppress bandits, they can report how the troops are advancing so that we can make preparations. The western hills are broad in extent—let the Tong Wei and Tong Meng brothers take ten or so companions and open an inn there. Let Li Li take ten or so men and open an inn on the southern side of the mountain. Let Shi Yong also take ten or so companions and open an inn on the northern side of the mountain. Each should also establish a waterside signal station with signal arrows and boats for receiving them. If there is any urgent military intelligence, it should be reported swiftly. Three great passes should be set up in front of the mountain, and Du Qian should be placed in overall command. He must not be reassigned to any other duty, and he must not leave his post without permission, morning or night. Let Tao Zongwang take charge of all construction works—dredging inlets and coves, repairing waterways, clearing rivers, maintaining the walls of Wanzicheng, and repairing the main road in front of the mountain. He was originally a farmer and is long accustomed to such work. Let Jiang Jing manage the storehouses and granaries, handling all disbursements and receipts, accumulating thousands and tens of thousands, and keeping the books and accounts. Let Xiao Rang draft all official documents, passes, and correspondence for inside and outside the stronghold, on the mountain and below, at the three passes, as well as the designations and numbers of all chieftains, great and small. Let Jin Danyan handle all engraving and carving—military tallies, seals, tablets, and the like. Let Hou Jian supervise the making of robes, armor, banners of the five directions, and similar items. Let Li Yun supervise the construction of all houses and halls on Liangshan Marsh. Let Ma Lin oversee the building and repair of warships of all sizes. Let Song Wan and Bai Sheng make camp at Golden Sands Shoal. Let Wang Ying and Zheng Tianshou make camp at Duckbill Shoal. Let Mu Chun and Zhu Fu manage the collection of money and grain for the stronghold. Let Lü Fang and Guo Sheng be quartered in the side chambers on either side of the Assembly Hall. Let Song Qing take charge of all feasts and banquets."
After all assignments had been made, a feast was held for three days, and there is nothing more to tell. From this time on, Liangshan Marsh was at peace, and every day they drilled the men and practiced martial arts. The chieftains of the water camp all practiced handling boats, swimming, and fighting on board ship, and there is nothing more to tell of this either.
One day, Song Jiang was chatting idly with Chao Gai, Wu Yong, and the others, saying, "All our brothers have today gathered together in great righteousness, but Gongsun Yiqing has not yet returned. I recall that he went back to Jizhou to visit his mother and pay respects to his master, with an agreement to return in a hundred days. It has been a long time now, and I do not know—"
"Could it be that they received no news at all and are not coming? I would trouble my brother Dai Zong to go with me and find out the truth of their situation—why have they not come?" Dai Zong volunteered to go. Song Jiang was greatly pleased and said, "Only you, brother, can travel quickly—in ten days we shall have news." That day Dai Zong took leave of the others, and the next morning dressed himself as a government clerk and went down the mountain. Truly:
Though but a common runner, he held no rank in the army.
A stranger all his life, he owed a debt of miles to his two legs.
When leaving the yamen, he carried a spotted rattan staff hung with official placards;
When the commander's army marched, a yellow silk banner bore the character for "order."
He could reach a home a thousand li away before the sun had moved;
For urgent military intelligence, not a moment would he delay.
In the morning he ate millet in Shandong; by evening he was eating pears in Weifu.
Now let me tell the story of Dai Zong. Since leaving Liangshan Marsh, he had taken the road to Jizhou. He bound four horseshoes to his legs and employed his magic swift-traveling technique, eating only vegetarian food along the way. After three days of travel, he arrived at the border of Yishui County, where he heard people saying: "The Black Cyclone got away the other day, injuring many people. He implicated the constable Li Yun, who has disappeared, and to this day they haven't found him anywhere." Dai Zong smiled coldly at this.
That very day as he was traveling, he saw a person approaching from far away, carrying an iron-tipped spear in his hand. Seeing Dai Zong walking quickly, that man stopped and called out, "Divine Traveler!" Dai Zong heard this and turned his face to look carefully. He saw a big fellow standing by a small path at the foot of a hillside, with a round head and large ears, a straight nose and square mouth, handsome eyebrows and clear eyes, a narrow waist and broad shoulders. Dai Zong quickly turned back and asked, "We've never met before, sir. How do you know my humble name?" The man hastily replied, "You really are the 'Divine Traveler' Dai Zong!" He set aside his spear and bowed to the ground. Dai Zong quickly raised him up and returned the courtesy, asking, "May I ask your honorable name?" The man said, "My surname is Yang, given name Lin. My ancestral home is Zhangde Prefecture. I have long made my home among the green forests of the outlaw world, and people on the rivers and lakes all call me 'Brocade Leopard' Yang Lin. Several months ago, I met Master Gongsun Sheng in a wine shop on the road. We drank together there, and he told me in detail about how Chao and Song at Liangshan Marsh welcome worthy men and recruit talented people, showing such brotherly loyalty. He wrote a letter instructing me to go to the great stronghold and join them, but I didn't dare to go rashly on my own. Master Gongsun also said: 'At the old Li Family Crossing there is a Zhu Gui who runs a tavern there, recruiting people to join the mountain stronghold. There is also a chieftain in the stronghold who welcomes the worthy and delivers reports, called the "Divine Traveler" Dai Yuanwai, who can travel eight hundred li in a day. Now I see you walk with extraordinary strides, so I called out to test—who would have thought it really is you, brother! What a heaven-sent fortune to meet you by chance.'" Dai Zong said, "I was specially sent to Jizhou to find Master Gongsun Sheng, but there was no news of him. Now I have received orders from Lords Chao and Song to go to Jizhou to gather news and bring Master Gongsun back to the stronghold. I never expected to meet you." Yang Lin said, "Although I am from Zhangde Prefecture, I have traveled all the places under the jurisdiction of Jizhou. If you don't mind, I'll accompany you on this journey." Dai Zong said, "If I could have your company, it would be a great blessing. Once we find Master Gongsun, we can return to Liangshan Marsh together." Yang Lin was overjoyed at this and invited Dai Zong to become his sworn brother. Dai Zong put away his horseshoes, and the two walked slowly together. When evening came, they stopped at a village inn. Yang Lin prepared wine and invited Dai Zong to drink, but Dai Zong said, "Because I use my swift-traveling technique, I cannot eat meat." They only bought some vegetarian dishes to share.
After one night, they rose early the next morning, made fire, ate breakfast, and prepared to set out. Yang Lin asked, "Brother, you travel using your swift-traveling technique—how can I keep up? I'm afraid I can't travel with you!" Dai Zong laughed and said, "My swift-traveling technique can carry another person too. I'll bind two horseshoes to your legs and apply the method, and you'll walk just as fast as I do. We can go when we want to go and stop when we want to stop. Otherwise, how could you keep up with me?" Yang Lin said, "I'm afraid this humble brother is merely mortal flesh and bone, not comparable to your divine body." Dai Zong said, "It's no problem. My method works on anyone. When it's applied, they travel just as I do. I only keep to a vegetarian diet myself—there's no hindrance otherwise." He then took two horseshoes and bound them to Yang Lin's legs. Dai Zong also bound only two to his own legs, applied his swift-traveling technique, and blew a breath over them. The two of them walked lightly, going fast or slow as Dai Zong directed. Along the way they chatted about matters of the rivers and lakes. Though they appeared to walk slowly, they actually didn't know how much ground they were covering.
Around mid-morning, they arrived at a place surrounded by high mountains with a post road running through the middle. Yang Lin recognized it and said to Dai Zong, "Brother, this place is called Yinma River. The big mountain ahead usually harbors a large band of men. I don't know what's happened recently. Because the mountains are beautiful and the waters wind around the peaks, it's called Yinma River." Just as they reached the foot of the mountain, they suddenly heard the sound of gongs and the wild beating of war drums. A couple of hundred outlaws came out to block the road. At their head stood two heroes, each holding a broad saber, who shouted loudly: "Travelers, stop! What kind of birds are you two? Where are you going? If you know what's good for you, quickly hand over the road tax, and we'll spare your lives!" Yang Lin laughed and said, "Brother, watch me deal with these blockheads." He gripped his iron-tipped spear and charged forward. The two heroes saw him coming fiercely and stepped forward to get a better look. The one on top called out: "Don't attack—isn't that Brother Yang Lin?" Yang Lin looked and then recognized them. The big fellow on top set aside his weapon and came forward with clasped hands to pay his respects, and called the tall fellow below to come forward and bow as well. Yang Lin brought Dai Zong over and said, "Brother, come meet these two warriors." Dai Zong asked, "Who are these two brave men? How do you know them?" Yang Lin said, "This hero who recognizes me is originally from Xiangyang Prefecture in Gaitian Army. His surname is Deng, given name Fei. Because his eyes are red, people on the rivers and lakes all call him 'Fire-Eyed Lion.' He can wield an iron chain, and no one can get near him. We were partners many years ago, but we parted five years ago and haven't seen each other since. Who would have thought we'd meet here today!" Deng Fei then asked, "Brother Yang Lin, who is this gentleman? He certainly can't be an ordinary person." Yang Lin said, "This
"This gentleman is none other than the Liangshan hero known as 'Divine Traveler' Dai Zong." Upon hearing this, Deng Fei said, "Could you be the Warden Dai of Jiangzhou, who can travel eight hundred li in a single journey?" Dai Zong replied, "This humble one is he." The two chieftains hastily bowed and said, "In the past we have only heard of your great name; we never expected to meet your esteemed countenance in person today!" When Dai Zong looked at Deng Fei, what did he look like? A poem bears witness:
He was originally an idle fighter of Xiangyang,
Drifting through the rivers and lakes with no thought of returning.
Having eaten much human flesh, his eyes were red—
Deng Fei was the fire-eyed lion.
After the two brave men had exchanged courtesies, Dai Zong again asked, "What is the honorable surname and given name of this hero?" Deng Fei said, "This brother of mine is surnamed Meng, given name Kang. His ancestral home was in Zhenzhou. He was skilled at building ships of all sizes. Because he was assigned to transport rare rocks and stones for the Imperial Park and was ordered to build large vessels, he grew angry at the supervising official who pressed and punished him, and on the spot he killed that official. He then abandoned his home and fled, finding refuge in the rivers and lakes among the outlaws for many years. Because he was tall, fair-skinned, and handsome, people saw that he had a splendid physique and gave him the nickname 'Jade Banner Pole' Meng Kang." When Dai Zong heard this, he was greatly pleased. What did Meng Kang look like? A poem bears witness:
He could draw a strong crossbow and charge at the head of the battle,
And build warships to cross the great river.
The master shipbuilder of Zhenzhou,
The Jade Banner Pole was Meng Kang.
At that moment, Dai Zong was very pleased to have met the two of them. As the four heroes were conversed, Yang Lin asked, "How long have the two of you been gathered here in brotherhood?" Deng Fei said, "I will not deceive you, elder brother—it has been over little a year. Just half a year ago, in the region due west from here, we met a man surnamed Pei, given name Xuan. His ancestral home was in Jingzhao Prefecture. He had originally served as a clerk in the prefectural court, and he was exceptionally skilled in legal documentation. He was loyal, upright, and intelligent, and would not tolerate the slightest impropriety. The locals called him 'Iron-faced Magistrate.' He was also adept at wielding spears and staves, and could brandish swords and swing blades—wise and brave in equal measure. Because the court had appointed a corrupt and greedy prefect to the region, who found an excuse to have him exiled to Sandmen Island, and as he passed through our territory, we killed the guards escorting him and rescued him here. He has since gathered two to three hundred men around him. This Pei Xuan is supremately skilled with a pair of swords, and because he is older, he now leads our mountain stronghold. May I invite the two of you to come to our humble encampment and meet him for a while?" He then ordered his men to bring horses, helped Dai Zong and Yang Lin mount, and the four of them rode toward the stronghold. Before long, they arrived at the foot of the stronghold. They dismounted, and Pei Xuan, having already been informed, hurried out to welcome them, descending the steps to receive them. When Dai Zong and Yang Lin looked at Pei Xuan, he was indeed a man of distinguished bearing—fair-skinned, portly, and composed—and they were secretly pleased. A poem bears witness:
When questioning matters, his wisdom and spirit were divine;
When putting brush to paper, gods and ghosts wept.
His heart was equitable and forgiving, without the slightest selfishness—
They called Pei Xuan the Iron-faced Magistrate.
At that moment, Pei Xuan invited the two heroes to the Hall of Assembly, where they all exchanged courtesies. With deference, they gave Dai Zong the seat of honor, followed by Pei Xuan, Yang Lin, Deng Fei, and Meng Kang. The five heroes, host and guests, were seated in proper order, and a banquet was laid out. That day they drank amid great music and revelry. Let it be known to the reader that these were all among the number of the Earthly Fiend Stars—when the appointed season arrived, Heaven graciously brought them together in righteous fellowship. A poem bears witness:
Heroes meet for a reason,
Linked in chains, seeking one another.
The generals and ministers of the Han court rose from butchers and fishermen—
Do not blame Liangshan for its misplaced ambitions.
As the company drank, Dai Zong spoke at the banquet of how the two chieftains Chao and Song welcomed the worthy and gathered talent, making friends with brave men from all corners of the land. They treated others with warmth and generosity, upheld righteousness, and gave freely of their wealth—so many fine qualities. The chieftains worked together with one heart, and the eight hundred li of Liangshan Marsh was so magnificent—with Wanzi City and Liao'erwa at its center, surrounded on all sides by vast misty waters, and with so many troops and horses—what need they fear the arrival of government soldiers? He kept on speaking to persuade the three of them. Pei Xuan replied, "My humble encampment also has some three hundred men and horses, and goods amounting to more than ten cartloads, not to mention grain and fodder. If, brother, you do not scorn us as lowly, and would recommend us to join the great stronghold, we would gladly follow your orders and serve. What is your esteemed view?" Dai Zong was overjoyed and said, "Lord Chao and Lord Song treat others without the slightest duplicity. With the added help of all of you, it would be like adding flowers to brocade. If you truly have this intention, you may pack your belongings. When this humble one and Yang Lin return from visiting Master Gongsun Sheng in Jizhou, we shall then disguise ourselves as government soldiers and hasten there by day and night." All were greatly pleased. When the wine was half finished, they moved to the Broken Gold Pavilion at the back of the mountain to enjoy the scenery of the Horse-Drinking Stream while drinking. Truly, it was a fine Horse-Drinking Stream. Behold:
As far as the eye could see, vast wild waters,
And all around, dim blue mountains.
Many old trees reflected the fading sunset glow,
A few patches of colored clouds drifted past distant peaks.
The desolate fields were silent—no children herding cattle;
The ancient crossing was forlorn—no nomads watering horses.
It was fit only for outlaws to build their stockades,
And just right for heroes to unfurl their banners.
When Dai Zong saw the mountain scenery of the Horse-Drinking Stream, he exclaimed, "What fine mountains and fine waters—truly beautiful! How did the two of you ever find your way here?" Deng Fei said, "Originally a few worthless fellows were camped here. Later, the two of us came and seized this place." Everyone laughed heartily. The five heroes drank until they were thoroughly drunk. Pei Xuan rose and performed a sword dance to enliven the drinking, and Dai Zong praised him without end. When evening came, they each returned to their quarters in the stronghold to rest. The next day, Dai Zong insisted on going down the mountain with Yang Lin. The three heroes tried hard to detain them but could not. They escorted them to the foot of the mountain, where they parted, and returned to their stronghold to pack their belongings and prepare for the journey—but of this, no more need be said.
Here is the translation:
Now let it be told. Dai Zong and Yang Lin left the Yinma River stronghold and traveled by day and rested by night along the road. Before long they arrived outside the walls of Jizhou and put up at an inn. Yang Lin said, "Elder brother, I think that Master Gongsun Sheng is a man of religion. He must live in a village in the mountains or among the trees, not inside a city." Dai Zong said, "That is true." That day the two of them went first to the area outside the city and inquired everywhere about Master Gongsun Sheng's whereabouts, but not a single person knew of him. They stayed one day. Early the next morning they again went to distant villages and market towns to ask, but there too not one person recognized him. The two returned to the inn to rest. On the third day Dai Zong said, "Perhaps there are people in the city who know him." That day he and Yang Lin went into Jizhou city to search for him. The two asked older residents, but they all said, "We do not know him. He probably is not a city person. He may live in a famous monastery in a mountain county outside the city."
Yang Lin was walking along a main street when in the distance he heard a burst of drums and music and saw a man being escorted along. Dai Zong and Yang Lin stood in the street to watch. Ahead of him were two petty jailers, one carrying many gifts and celebratory presents, the other holding bolts of silk and colored fabric. Behind them, under a canopy of green gauze, came a prison executioner. The man was of handsome appearance, showing all over his body blue-indigo tattoos, his brows reaching his temples, his phoenix eyes tilted upward, a sallow complexion, and a sparse growth of whiskers. This man's family was originally from Henan. His name was Yang Xiong. He had followed an elder cousin to Jizhou to serve as prefect, and had remained there ever since. Later a new prefect arrived who recognized him and appointed him prison warden of both courts and also executioner at the marketplace. Because of his great martial skill and his slightly sallow complexion, people called him the "Sick Guan Suo" Yang Xiong. There is a lyric to the tune "Lin Jiang Xian" describing Yang Xiong's fine qualities:
His two arms carved in blue, engraved with tender jade,
His eyes set in a ring, exquisite and bright.
Beside his temples he loved to wear the kingfisher hibiscus.
On his back the word "executioner" was written,
His coat was stained the color of scarlet blood.
In the interrogation hall he displayed his skill,
His execution blade swift as the wind.
A sallow face and thick brows so fine,
People call him Sick Guan Suo—
This hero is Yang Xiong.
At that moment Yang Xiong was walking in the middle of the procession, and behind him a petty jailer carried the ghost-headed execution blade. They had just returned from carrying out an execution in the marketplace. His acquaintances had come to congratulate him with red silk and presents and were escorting him home. Coming directly toward Dai Zong and Yang Lin, a crowd of people blocked the crossroads to offer him wine. Then from a side path burst out seven or eight soldiers. The leader was called Zhang Bao the Sheep-Kicker. This man was a garrison soldier of Jizhou. With him were several men who were riffraff that regularly extorted idle money both inside and outside the city. The authorities had repeatedly tried to discipline them but failed to reform them. They saw that Yang Xiong was originally an outsider who had come to Jizhou and that there were people who feared him, and so they were not intimidated. That day they saw that he had received many bolts of silk as rewards, and these several reckless fellows, half drunk, had come along looking to provoke him. They also saw the crowd blocking the crossroads to offer him wine. Zhang Bao pushed through the crowd, squeezed to the front, and called out, "Greetings, Warden!" Yang Xiong said, "Elder brother, come have a drink." Zhang Bao said, "I don't want a drink. I've come specially to borrow a hundred or so strings of cash from you." Yang Xiong said, "Though I know you, elder brother, we have never had dealings in money. Why should I lend you money?" Zhang Bao said, "You've swindled a great deal of property from the common people today. Why not lend me some?" Yang Xiong replied, "All this was given to me by others as a gesture of respect. How can you say I swindled it from the people? You come here to make trouble. I belong to the military and civil authorities—we have no jurisdiction over each other." Zhang Bao made no reply. He called the others forward in a rush, and they first seized all the celebratory gifts and bolts of silk. Yang Xiong shouted, "These scoundrels have no manners!" He was about to go forward and strike the men who were seizing his things, but Zhang Bao seized him by the chest and held him fast. Two others came from behind and grabbed his hands. The rest all began to fight, and the petty jailers each scattered and fled. Yang Xiong was hemmed in by Zhang Bao and the two soldiers and could not free himself. He could only swallow his rage and could not break loose.
In the midst of this commotion, a big man appeared carrying a load of firewood on a pole. He saw the crowd surrounding Yang Xiong, unable to move. This man saw it and, regarding the injustice, set down his load of firewood, parted the crowd, and came forward to intervene. "Why are you beating this warden?" he demanded. Zhang Bao glared and shouted, "You miserable beggar who can't starve or freeze to death—how dare you meddle!" The big man was furious. In a rage he seized Zhang Bao by the head with one hand and threw him to the ground. The hangers-on who had been helping saw this and were about to come forward to fight, but the big man punched each of them with a single blow, and they all sprawled in every direction. Only then was Yang Xiong able to free himself. He put his skill to use and threw his fists about like a whirlwind, and all the riffraff were knocked to the ground. Zhang Bao, seeing things were not going well, scrambled to his feet and ran off. Yang Xiong, burning with anger, strode after him in pursuit. Zhang Bao fled along with those who had seized the bundles, and Yang Xiong chased after them through the streets until they turned into a side alley. The big man did not stop but continued to look for people to fight with at the crossroads.
Dai Zong and Yang Lin watched and secretly applauded. "Truly a hero!" they said. "This is a case of 'seeing injustice on the road and drawing one's sword to help'—a genuine brave man!" Indeed:
The dragon-spring sword in its scabbard struggles to emerge,
Because in this world there are those who are wronged.
A bystander can distinguish wrong from right,
And one who comes to help knows nothing of whether they are kin or stranger.
At that moment, Dai Zong and Yang Lin stepped forward to stop him, saying, "Good hero, for the sake of our humble faces, let this matter rest." The two men helped him into a side alley. Yang Lin carried his load of firewood for him. Dai Zong clasped the man's hand and invited him into a wine shop. Yang Lin set down the firewood and they all went into a private room. The big man pressed his hands together in salute and said, "I am deeply indebted to you two elder brothers for rescuing me from this calamity." Dai Zong said, "We two brothers are also men from out of town. When we saw you standing up for justice, we feared that your fists might strike too hard and accidentally take a life. We stepped in especially to defuse the situation. Please join us for three cups of wine, so that we might meet here and form a bond of brotherhood." The big man said, "You two benevolent brothers have already resolved this conflict for me, and now you honor me with wine as well. I truly do not deserve such kindness." Yang Lin said, "'Within the four seas, all men are brothers'—what harm is there in that? Please, sit." Dai Zong insisted on giving him the seat of honor, but the man would not presume to take it. Dai Zong and Yang Lin took the upper seats, and the man sat opposite them. They called the waiter over, and Yang Lin took a tael of silver from his person and gave it to the waiter, saying, "Don't trouble yourself asking what we want—just bring whatever dishes you have, and we'll settle the bill at the end." The waiter took the silver and laid out vegetables, fruits, appetizers, and other accompaniments. After several cups had been drunk, Dai Zong asked, "What is your honored name, brave one? And where is your hometown?" The man replied, "My name is Shi Xiu, by family origin a man of Jiankang Prefecture in Jinling. From childhood I have trained in spear and staff, and all my life I have been determined to right wrongs—whenever I see injustice on the road, I must go to help. People call me 'The Desperate Third Brother.' I came to an outlying province with my uncle to trade in sheep and horses, but my uncle died on the journey and I lost my capital. Unable to return home, I drifted here to Ji Prefecture and have been selling firewood to get by. Since you have deigned to make my acquaintance, I should tell you the truth." Dai Zong said, "We two came here on business and happened to meet you, such a hero, yet you are reduced to selling firewood here—how can you ever make your mark? Better to throw yourself into the rivers and lakes and spend the rest of your days in happiness." Shi Xiu said, "I know only some spear and staff techniques—I have no other skills. How could I ever prosper and find happiness?" Dai Zong said, "These are times when true talent goes unrecognized—first, because the court is benighted, and second, because treacherous ministers block the way. By a stroke of fortune, I went to join Song Jiangong of Liangshan Marsh. Now we divide our gold and silver by weight and change our clothes in rotation—we only wait for the court's offer of amnesty, and sooner or later we shall all become officials." Shi Xiu sighed and said, "Even if I wished to go, I have no way in." Dai Zong said, "If you are willing to go, I will recommend you." Shi Xiu said, "May I presume to ask your two honorables' names?" Dai Zong said, "My name is Dai Zong, and my brother's name is Yang Lin." Shi Xiu said, "I have heard spoken of on the rivers and lakes the 'Magic Traveller' of Jiangzhou—could that be you, sir?" Dai Zong said, "That is this humble one." He told Yang Lin to take a ten-tael silver ingot from his bundle and present it to Shi Xiu as capital. Shi Xiu dared not accept it, but after repeated modest refusals he finally took it, and only then did he know that this was the "Magic Traveller" of Liangshan Marsh. Just as he was about to speak his heartfelt thoughts and entrust himself to joining their band, they heard someone outside come in asking for them. The three looked and saw Yang Xiong leading some twenty men, all of them constables, rushing into the wine shop. Dai Zong and Yang Lin, seeing so many men, were greatly alarmed, and in the commotion they hurriedly slipped away.
Shi Xiu stood up to greet him and said, "Commandant, where have you come from?" Yang Xiong said, "Brother, where haven't I searched for you—and here you are drinking wine! For a time I had my hands pinned by that scoundrel and couldn't fight back. It was thanks to your strength that I was saved from that humiliation. In the heat of the moment I only thought to chase that scoundrel down and recover his satchel, but I left you behind. When these brothers heard me fighting, they all came to help. We managed to recover the stolen bolts of colored silk and brocade, but we couldn't find you anywhere. Just now someone said, 'Two out-of-town guests persuaded him to go drink wine at a shop,' and that's how we knew. We've come looking for you especially." Shi Xiu said, "Just now two out-of-town guests invited me here for three cups of wine. We were chatting casually—I didn't know you were calling for me." Yang Xiong was greatly pleased and asked, "What is your honored name, sir? Where is your hometown? And why are you here?" Shi Xiu replied, "My name is Shi Xiu, by family origin a man of Jiankang Prefecture in Jinling. I have been straightforward all my life—whenever I see injustice on the road, I must risk my life to set it right. For this reason everyone calls me 'The Desperate Third Brother.' I came to this place with my uncle to trade sheep and horses, but unexpectedly my uncle died on the journey. I lost my capital and have been stranded here in Ji Prefecture, selling firewood to get by." When Yang Xiong looked at Shi Xiu, what a fine hero he was—well-proportioned from head to toe. There is a poem in the *Xijiang Yue* mode that sings of Shi Xiu's fine qualities:
His body like a tiger of the mountains,
His nature like oil poured on fire.
Bold of heart, daring, and full of stratagem,
He rescues people wherever he goes.
He relies on a single staff,
He trusts only two fists.
His fame that shakes the heavens fills the imperial capital—
"The Desperate Third Brother," Shi Xiu.
Presently Yang Xiong asked Shi Xiu, "Where has the guest who was drinking with you just now gone?" Shi Xiu replied, "Those two saw the warder come in with men and thought there would be trouble, so they left." Yang Xiong said, "In that case, first call the tavern keeper and bring two jars of wine. Give everyone three large bowls each, drink up, and come again tomorrow to meet." The crowd drank their wine and dispersed on their own.
Yang Xiu then said, "Shi Xiu, Third Brother, don't take this as a slight. I suppose you have no relatives here. How about I become sworn brothers with you today?" Shi Xiu was overjoyed at this and said, "May I presume to ask the warder's age?" Yang Xiong said, "I am twenty-nine this year." Shi Xiu said, "Your younger brother is twenty-eight. Please, sir, take the seat of honor and allow me to bow to you as elder brother." Shi Xiu bowed four times. Yang Xiong was delighted and called the tavern keeper to arrange food and wine. "My brother and I will drink ourselves senseless today."
While they were drinking, Yang Xiong's father-in-law, Old Man Pan, arrived leading five or seven men, coming straight to the tavern. Yang Xiong rose and said, "Father-in-law, what brings you here?" Old Man Pan said, "I heard you were fighting with someone and came looking for you." Yang Xiong said, "This brother rescued me. He beat that fellow Zhang Bao so badly he's scared out of his wits. I've just sworn brotherhood with Brother Shi here and made him my brother." Old Man Pan called out, "Good, good! Let these brothers have a bowl of wine before they go." Yang Xiong told the tavern keeper to bring wine, and each man drank three bowls before leaving.
He then asked Old Man Pan to sit in the middle, Yang Xiong took the seat of honor, and Shi Xiu sat below. The three sat down, and the tavern keeper came to pour the wine. Old Man Pan saw that Shi Xiu was such a heroic, tall fellow and was very pleased. He said, "My son-in-law having you as a brother to help him—it's not wasted that he moves in official circles. Who would dare bully him?" He also asked, "Uncle, what trade were you in before?" Shi Xiu said, "My late father was a butcher." Old Man Pan said, "Do you know the business of slaughtering livestock?" Shi Xiu laughed and said, "I've eaten butcher's food since childhood—how could I not know how to slaughter livestock?" Old Man Pan said, "This old man was originally a butcher by trade. I'm too old to do it now, and I only have this son-in-law. He's been taken into government service himself, so I gave up this line of work."
When the three had drunk halfway through, they calculated the bill. Shi Xiu offset it with the load of firewood he had brought. The three headed back together. When Yang Xiong entered his house, he called out, "Wife, come quickly and meet this uncle." From behind the cloth curtain came a voice: "Husband, what uncle are you talking about?" Yang Xiong said, "Don't ask now—just come out and greet him." The curtain parted and out came the woman. What did she look like? Observe:
Black, glossy hair; fine, curved brows; bright, glistening eyes; fragrant, full lips; a straight, noble nose; rosy, plump cheeks; fair, luminous skin; a light, graceful body; jade-white, delicate fingers; a tiny, willow waist; soft, rounded belly; pointed, dainty feet; flowery, embroidered shoes; creamy, full bosom; white, smooth legs. And there was one more thing—narrow and tight, squeezed and compressed, red and fresh, purple and thick—one could not tell what it might be. There is a poem to prove it:
A maiden of sixteen, soft as floss,
Carries a moon-shaped spade to kill fools.
Though you never see heads fall,
Secretly she drains the marrow from your bones.
It turned out this woman was born on the seventh day of the seventh month, so her pet name was Qiao-yun. She had first married an official clerk from Ji Prefecture named Magistrate Wang, who died two years ago. Only then did she marry Yang Xiong as a second husband, and they had not yet been married a full year.
When Shi Xiu saw the woman come out, he hurried forward and bowed. "Sister-in-law, please sit." Shi Xiu began to bow. The woman said, "I am young—how dare I accept such courtesy?" Yang Xiong said, "This is my newly sworn brother today. You are his sister-in-law—you may accept half a bow." At once Shi Xiu bowed four times with full ceremony. The woman returned two bows. She invited them inside to sit, tidied an empty room, and told the uncle to rest there. No more of this.
The next day, Yang Xiong went out to attend to official duties and instructed his household, "Prepare clothes and a headband for Shi Xiu." He had the luggage and bundles from the inn fetched and stored in his house.
Now it must be told that Dai Zong and Yang Lin, having seen the officers come looking for Shi Xiu at the tavern, had slipped away in the confusion and returned to their inn outside the city to rest. The next day they searched for Gongsun Sheng for two days, but no one recognized him, and they did not know where he was staying. The two discussed the matter and decided to return. That day they packed their luggage, left Ji Prefecture, and headed for Yinma River. There they joined Pei Xuan, Deng Fei, Meng Kang, and their men, disguising themselves as government troops and traveling day and night toward Liangshan Marsh. Dai Zong wanted to present this accomplishment and had also gathered many men to bring to the mountain. The mountain held a celebratory feast on their account. No more of this.
Let me now tell about Yang Xiong's father-in-law, Pan Gong, who had discussed with Shi Xiu about opening a butcher's shop. Pan Gong said, "Behind our house there's a dead-end alley, and there's an empty room in the back. The well water there is convenient—it can serve as a workshop. We'll have you, Uncle, build quarters inside there, so you can also keep an eye on things." When Shi Xiu saw it, he too was pleased that it was so convenient. Pan Gong then found an old acquaintance to serve as an assistant, and asked only that Uncle Shi Xiu keep the accounts. Shi Xiu agreed, called in the assistant, and had the meat counters, water basins, and chopping blocks painted in bright greens and blues. He sharpened many knives and cleavers, arranged the meat counters, prepared the workshop and pigpens, and started raising a dozen or more fattened pigs. He chose an auspicious day and opened the shop. All the neighbors, relatives, and friends came to hang red banners and congratulate him, and they feasted for a day or two. Yang Xiong's whole family was pleased that Shi Xiu had opened the shop. From then on, there were no problems. Pan Gong and Shi Xiu conducted the business themselves. Before they knew it, time passed swiftly, and more than two months had gone by. It was late autumn turning to winter. Shi Xiu had new clothes from inside to outside, top to bottom. One day Shi Xiu rose early before dawn and went to the county to buy pigs. He returned home only after three days, and found the shop closed. When he went inside the house, the meat counter's chopping block had been put away, and the knives and household implements had been stored. Shi Xiu was a shrewd man—he saw through it at once and understood in his heart. He thought to himself, "As the saying goes, 'A man cannot prosper a thousand days, and a flower cannot stay red a hundred days.' My brother has been away on official business and has neglected family affairs. Surely my sister-in-law, seeing me wearing these new clothes, must have said something behind my back. And seeing me gone for two days, someone must have stirred up talk. She probably suspects me and has stopped the business. I won't wait for her to say anything—I'll resign first and go back to my hometown. As the old saying goes, 'Who has a heart that lasts forever?'"
Shi Xiu had already driven the pigs into the pen, then went to his room to change his footwear, packed his bundle and luggage, and carefully wrote out a clear account book. He came in from the back. Pan Gong had already prepared some vegetarian dishes and wine, and invited Shi Xiu to sit down and drink. Pan Gong said, "Uncle, you've been away and troubled yourself—it must have been exhausting, driving the pigs back." Shi Xiu said, "Father-in-law, it's only my duty. Please first review this clear account book. If there is even the slightest trace of selfishness in it, may heaven and earth strike me dead." Pan Gong said, "Why does Uncle say such a thing? Nothing has happened at all." Shi Xiu said, "I've been away from home for five or seven years, and now I want to go back for a visit. I've come especially to hand over the accounts. Tonight I'll take my leave of my brother, and tomorrow morning I'll set out." When Pan Gong heard this, he laughed loudly and said, "Uncle, you're mistaken. Stay a while and let this old man speak." The old fellow had countless things to say, and more than could be told in one sitting. It would come to this: a brave man repaid a kindness with his three-foot blade, and a monk broke his vows and lost his life. What exactly Pan Gong said, you will hear in the next chapter.
