Farewell at Xie Tiao Tower in Xuzhou to Secretary Shu Yun
Yesterday that cast me off—I cannot make it stay.
Today that roils my heart—it brings me endless grief.
A thousand miles the autumn wind sends the wild geons flying; facing this, we may drink our fill in the high tower.
Your writing has the bone of the Jian'an age, of the Penglai style; and Xiao Xie, too, is fresh and clear.
Both of us harbor soaring spirits and thoughts that would fly—we long to climb the blue sky and embrace the bright moon.
Draw a knife to cut the water, and the water flows on; raise a cup to drown sorrow, and the sorrow only deepens.
Since life in this world brings us no satisfaction, let us tomorrow let down our hair and drift away in a small boat.
