Untoward Happenings—Fengjie Spills Her Vinegar;
An Unexpected Pleasure—Ping'er Fixes Her Toilette
The previous chapter Back to directory The next chapter
The story tells how the company was watching a performance of the *Thorn Hairpin* play, Baoyu sitting with his girl cousins. When Daiyu saw the scene called "The Husband's Sacrifice," she remarked to Baochai, "This Wang Shipeng is a silly fellow. If he wanted to hold a memorial, why couldn't he do it anywhere? Why must he go to the bank of the river? The proverb says, 'Seeing the thing, one thinks of the person.' All the water in the world comes from the same source. He could have scooped up a bowl of water anywhere, looked at it, and wept to his heart's content." Baochai made no reply. Baoyu turned back to fetch hot wine to toast Fengjie.
Now the fact was that the old lady had said that this was not like an ordinary day and had insisted on Fengjie enjoying herself thoroughly. She herself was too lazy to sit at the banquet and had just reclined on a couch in the inner room, watching the opera with Aunt Xue. She had chosen a few of her favorite dishes and put them on a small table, and was chatting and eating as she pleased. She had given the two tables of feast dishes to the various maids who had not been assigned seats and to the women who were on duty or running errands, ordering them to sit beneath the eaves of the corridor outside the windows and eat and drink as they liked, with no need to stand on ceremony. Lady Wang and Lady Xing were seated at the high table in the room, and the outer tables were taken by the young ladies. From time to time the old lady would instruct Madam You, "Make Sister Feng sit at the top seat. You must all take good care of her and play the host for me. She works hard all year round." Madam You assented, then smilingly replied, "She's not used to sitting in the chief seat. When she sits at the top she doesn't know whether to sit this way or that, and she won't drink her wine either." The old lady laughed and said, "You don't know how. I'll go and make her myself." Fengjie hurried in too, laughing, "Don't believe them, Old Ancestress. I've already had quite a few cups." The old lady laughingly ordered Madam You, "Quickly drag her out and seat her in the chair. All of you must toast her in turn. If she still won't drink, I really will go myself." When Madam You heard this, she laughingly dragged Fengjie out again and sat her down, ordering someone to bring a small wine-cup and pour the wine. She smiled and said, "All year long you've been dutiful to the old lady, to my lady, and to me. I have nothing to reward you with today except to pour a cup of wine with my own hands. Be a good girl and take a sip from my hand." Fengjie laughed and said, "If you really want to show me respect, kneel down and I'll drink." Madam You laughed, "Listen to who's talking! I'll tell you something. This good day we're having today is hard to come by. After this, who knows whether we'll have another day like this? Drink your fill while you can!" Fengjie could not refuse, so she had to drink two cups. Then the other young ladies came, and Fengjie had to take a sip from each one's cup. When the old lady was in such high spirits, even Mother Lai could not fail to join in the fun. She led some of the old nannies in toasting Fengjie as well. Fengjie found it hard to refuse and had to take two sips. Then Yuanyang and the others came to toast her. Fengjie really could not manage any more and pleaded, "Dear sisters, spare me! I'll drink tomorrow." Yuanyang laughed, "Is that so? Have we no face then? Even when we go before my lady, she still gives us some face. We used to have a certain dignity, but today in front of all these people you put on the airs of a mistress. I shouldn't have come in the first place. If you won't drink, we'll leave." And she actually started to go. Fengjie hurriedly caught up with her and pulled her back, laughing, "Good sister, I'll drink." She took the wine, filled a cup to the brim, and drained it. Only then did Yuanyang laugh and disperse with the others, after which they all returned to the banquet.
Feng-jie felt the wine settling heavily in her, her heart pounding as if it would leap into her throat. She wanted to go home to rest. Just then the variety performers came up, so she said to You-shi, "Have the rewards ready—I'm going to wash my face." You-shi nodded. Feng-jie seized a moment when no one was watching and slipped away from the table, heading toward the back of the doorway. Ping-er, ever attentive, hurried after her at once, and Feng-jie leaned on her for support. They had just reached the covered corridor when a young maid from her quarters was standing there. Seeing the two of them approach, the girl turned and ran. Feng-jie's suspicions were immediately aroused, and she called out sharply. The maid pretended not to hear at first, but when Ping-er also called from behind, she had no choice but to come back. Feng-jie's misgivings only deepened. She and Ping-er quickly entered the passageway, and she ordered the little maid to follow them inside. She had the partition screens closed, then sat down on the steps of the small courtyard and commanded the girl to kneel. She barked at Ping-er, "Fetch two of the young servants from the inner gate—bring ropes and a whip, and beat this little creature who has no respect for her mistress until her flesh is in shreds!" The little maid was already so terrified that her soul seemed to have fled her body. She wept and knocked her head on the ground, begging for mercy. Feng-jie demanded, "I'm no ghost. When you saw me, why didn't you stand still properly? Why did you run ahead instead?" The maid sobbed, "I truly didn't see you, Madam. I was worried there was no one in the rooms, so I ran." Feng-jie said, "If there was no one in the rooms, who told you to come here? Even if you didn't see me, I and Ping-er called out to you more than ten times from behind—the more we called, the faster you ran. It wasn't far at all. Are you deaf? And you still talk back to me!" With that, she raised her hand and slapped the girl across the face, sending her sprawling. She struck her on the other cheek too, and in an instant both the girl's cheeks swelled and turned purple. Ping-er quickly interceded, "Madam, mind your hand—you'll hurt it." Feng-jie said, "Hit her again and ask her why she ran. If she won't say, I'll tear her mouth to pieces!" The maid had been talking back at first, but when she heard Feng-jie threaten to heat a red-hot iron and brand her mouth, she cried out, "The Second Master is at home. He sent me here to keep watch for you, Madam. If he saw you leaving the party, he told me to send him word first. I never expected you to come back so soon." Feng-jie sensed there was something behind these words. "Why did he tell you to watch me? Is he afraid I'll go home? There must be some other reason. Tell me quickly, and from now on I'll treat you kindly. If you don't tell me everything, I'll take a knife and cut your flesh this instant." As she spoke, she reached up and pulled a hairpin from her head, then jabbed it wildly at the girl's mouth. The maid cowered and wept, begging, "I'll tell you, Madam, but don't say it was I who told." Ping-er urged her on from the side and pressed her to hurry and speak. The maid then said, "The Second Master had only just come to the room. He slept for a while, then woke up and sent someone to see how you were. He said you had just sat down to the party and it would be quite some time before you came. Then the Second Master opened the chest and took out two pieces of silver, two hairpins, and two bolts of satin. He told me to take them secretly to Bao-er's wife and bring her in. She took the things and came straight to our rooms. The Second Master told me to keep watch for you—what happened after that, I don't know."
Feng-jie listened, so furious that her whole body went weak. She rose at once and made straight for home. Just as she reached the gate, she saw another little maid peeking out in front. The girl caught sight of Feng-jie and ducked back to run. Feng-jie called her by name and stopped her. The maid was naturally sharp-witted; seeing she couldn't escape, she came right out instead and laughed, "I was just about to come tell you, Madam—what a coincidence that you're here." Feng-jie said, "Tell me what?" The maid then described everything the Second Master had done at home, repeating word for word what she had just told her. Feng-jie spat, "What were you doing earlier? Now that you've been caught, you want to wash your hands of it!" With that, she raised her hand and slapped the girl so hard she stumbled. Then Feng-jie crept on tiptoe to the window and listened. Inside, she could hear laughter and talk. The woman was saying, "If only your tyrant wife would die one of these days!" Jia Lian replied, "Even if she died and I married someone else, it would be just the same. What difference would it make?" the woman said. "If she died, you could make Ping-er your proper wife—that might be a bit better," the woman said. Jia Lian said, "Nowadays she won't even let me touch Ping-er. Ping-er has a bellyful of grievances she dares not speak. What did I do in a former life to deserve being cursed with a 'she-demon'?"
When Fengjie heard this, her whole body trembled with rage. The fact that both of them praised Ping'er made her suspect that Ping'er too must have been nursing grievances behind her back all along. The wine surged up within her unchecked. Without a moment's thought, she turned and slapped Ping'er twice, kicked the door open, and rushed in. She seized Bao Er's wife and gave her a sound beating, not letting her get a word in. Fearing that Jia Lian might slip away, she planted herself in the doorway and cursed: "You filthy whore! You've stolen your master's husband and now you want to murder his wife! Ping'er, come here! You bitches and your cockerel of a husband are all in league—you resent me, but out there you put on a fine show for my benefit!" With that she struck Ping'er again. Ping'er, wronged with no one to appeal to, could only sob in helpless fury. "You two are the ones with no shame!" she cried. "What business do you have dragging me into this?" She lunged at Bao Er's wife and began clawing at her. Jia Lian, flushed with drink himself, had come in high spirits. He had not taken precautions. When he saw Fengjie, his courage deserted him. Then, seeing Ping'er joining the fray, his anger rose with the wine. When Fengjie set upon Bao Er's wife, he felt both ashamed and furious, but could not say so. When he saw Ping'er striking her too, he kicked at her and cursed: "You damned whore! You dare raise your hand to someone?" Ping'er, cowed by him, stopped and wept: "What did I have to do with your scheming behind my back? Why drag me into it?" Fengjie, seeing that Ping'er was afraid of Jia Lian, grew even angrier. She bore down on Ping'er again, hitting her but telling her to hit Bao Er's wife instead. In desperation, Ping'er ran out and searched for a knife, intending to end her life. The old women and maids outside rushed in to restrain her and reason with her. When Fengjie saw that Ping'er was trying to kill herself, she threw herself at Jia Lian, crying: "You're all in league against me—I overheard everything, and now you all want to frighten me. Strangle me too, why don't you!" In his fury, Jia Lian drew a sword from the wall. "No need to kill yourself," he said. "I'm at my wits' end too. Let's kill each other and pay with our lives—that'll settle things once and for all." Just as they were locked in this furious tangle, Madam You and a group of others arrived. "What is all this?" they asked. "Everything was perfectly fine a moment ago!" Now that there were witnesses, Jia Lian, "emboldened by three parts wine," put on a great show of bravado and made as if he meant to kill Fengjie. Seeing others present, Fengjie dropped her wildness. She abandoned the crowd and ran off weeping toward the Dowager's quarters.
By now the opera performance had ended. Fengjie rushed to the Dowager and threw herself into her lap. "Ancestors, save me!" she cried. "Master Lian is going to kill me!" The Dowager, Lady Xing, and Lady Wang all pressed her for an explanation. Fengjie sobbed: "I had just gone home to change clothes when, to my surprise, Master Lian was at home talking with someone. I thought he had a visitor and was too frightened to go in. I listened outside the window and discovered he was plotting with Bao Er's wife. They said I was too fierce and planned to poison me to death and make Ping'er his proper wife. I was furious, but I dared not quarrel with him. So I slapped Ping'er a couple of times and asked her why she wanted to harm me. He was so ashamed he tried to kill me." The Dowager and the others believed her completely. "This is intolerable!" they cried. "Fetch that scoundrel at once!" Before they had finished speaking, Jia Lian came charging in with his sword, followed by a crowd of people. He knew full well that the Dowager doted on him and that even his mother and aunt could not restrain him, so he blustered in with all the more insolence. Lady Xing and Lady Wang, furious, rushed to stop him and cursed: "You scoundrel! You've gone too far—the Dowager is right here!" Jia Lian squinted at them. "It's the Old Lady who's spoiled him. That's why he's this way—he even dares curse me!" Lady Xing snatched the sword from him and ordered him sharply: "Get out, now!" But Jia Lian carried on whining and babbling nonsense. The Dowager said sternly: "I know you don't have us in your eyes at all. Someone go fetch his father!" Only at this did Jia Lian shuffle out reluctantly. Too angry to go home, he made his way to the outer study.
Here Lady Xing and Lady Wang began to scold Fengjie. The Dowager laughed. "What's so serious about it? Young people are like cats who can't resist the smell of fish—how can you expect them to be otherwise? Everyone goes through this when they're young. It's my fault—he had a few extra cups of wine and then got jealous." Everyone laughed. The Dowager added: "Don't worry. Tomorrow I'll make him come apologize to you. Today don't go near him and embarrass him." Then she cursed: "That creature Ping'er—I always thought so well of her. How could she be so wicked behind my back?" Madam You and the others smiled. "Ping'er has done nothing wrong. It's Sister Feng who's taking it out on her. When husband and wife quarrel and can't fight each other directly, they both take it out on Ping'er. She's the one who's been wronged—and yet the Old Lady scolds her." The Dowager said: "So that's how it is. I always said that girl didn't look like one of those bewitching schemers. In that case, she deserves pity—she's suffered their abuse for nothing." She summoned Hupo. "Go out and tell Ping'er this for me: I know she's been wronged. Tomorrow I'll have Sister Fengjie apologize to her. Today is her master's auspicious day—she mustn't make a scene."
It turned out that Li Wan had already taken Ping'er into the Grand View Garden. Ping'er was sobbing, scarcely able to lift her head. Baochai reasoned with her: "You are a sensible person. Sister Feng has always treated you well—today she simply had one cup too much. If she didn't take it out on you, who else would she take it out on? And everyone else would only laugh at her for being drunk. If you let yourself feel wronged just now, does that mean all the goodness you've shown over the years was false?" Even as she spoke, Amber came with a message from the Lady Dowager. Ping'er felt her face regain its luster, and gradually she cheered up and did not go back to the front quarters. Baochai and the others rested a while before going to see the Lady Dowager and Xifeng.
Baoyu then invited Ping'er to Happy Red Court. Xiren hurried forward with a smile. "I would have invited you first, but since the young mistress and the other ladies all insisted on having you, I didn't like to press my claim." Ping'er smiled back her thanks, then added, "Everything was perfectly fine—who could have expected this? I've suffered a grievance for no reason at all." Xiren said with a smile, "The Second Mistress has always treated you well—she was just carried away by a moment's anger." Ping'er replied, "I can't blame the Second Mistress. It was that shameless woman who set upon me, and he deliberately made sport of me too—that muddle-headed master of mine actually struck me." At this she felt her grievance afresh and could not hold back her tears. Baoyu quickly consoled her, "Dear sister, don't be sad—I'll make apologies on behalf of both of them." Pingerreplied with a smile, "What has it got to do with you?" Baoyu said with a smile, "We are all brothers and sisters here. When they offend someone, it's only right that I should make amends." He went on, "What a pity your new clothes got stained too. Your flower-sister's clothes are here—why don't you change? We can sprinkle some heated wine on them and iron them. Have your hair re-done too, and wash your face." Even as he spoke, he ordered the little maids to fetch water for washing and to heat the iron. Ping'er had always heard that Baoyu was especially good at befriending girls. As for Baoyu, he had always kept his distance from Ping'er because she was Jia Lian's favorite concubine and Xifeng's trusted confidante, and the fact that he could not show her his full regard had long been a source of regret. Now Ping'er saw how thoughtful he was, and inwardly she reflected: So the rumors are true—he is considerate in every little detail. Then she saw Xiren specially open the trunk and bring out two garments she seldom wear, to let Ping'er change into them. She quickly took off her own clothes and went to wash her face. Baoyu stood by, smiling as he advised, "Sister, you should put on some powder too, or you'll look as if you're sulking at Sister Feng. Besides, this is her lucky day, and the Old Lady has already sent someone to comfort you." Ping'er thought this reasonable and went to look for powder, but could not find any. Baoyu hurried to the dressing table, opened a porcelain box from the Xuande kilns, and took out one of the ten jade hairpin-shaped sticks arranged inside, handing it to Ping'er. He said with a smile, "This isn't lead powder—it's made from morning glory seeds, ground up and mixed with spices." Ping'er poured some into her palm and examined it: indeed it was light, white, red, and fragrant—all four qualities were there. It spread easily and evenly on the face, and it moistened the skin without being heavy, greenish, and clogging like other powders. Then she saw that the rouge was not in flat cakes, but in a small white jade box containing a single portion, like a paste of rose petals. Baoyu said with a smile, "Rouge bought in the market is never clean, and the color is thin too. This is the finest rouge, the juice pressed out and strained free of sediment, then blended with flower dew and steamed repeatedly. You only need to take a little on the tip of a thin hairpin, rub it in your palm, moisten it with a little water, and apply it to your lips—what's left in your palm is enough for your cheeks." Ping'er followed his instructions, and indeed she looked unusually fresh and lovely, her cheeks suffused with a sweet fragrance. Baoyu then took a spray of autumn orchids with twin blooms from the pot and snipped it with a bamboo scissors, pinning it in her hair. Just then a maid sent by Li Wan came to fetch her, and she hurried away.
Baoyu had never before had the chance to show Ping'er his full regard—and Ping'er was an exceptionally clever and beautiful girl of the highest order, not like those vulgar, clumsy, coarse creatures—so he had long felt this as a grievance. Today happened to be Jinchuan's birthday, which had made him unhappy all day. He had not expected that after all the commotion, he would finally have the chance to show Ping'er a little of his heart—a joy he had never anticipated. He lay down on the bed, content and at peace within. Then it occurred to him that Jia Lian only knew how to gratify himself with sensual pleasures and had no idea how to care for and pamper a woman. He thought further that Ping'er had no parents, no brothers or sisters—she was all alone, serving both Jia Lian and his wife. Amidst Jia Lian's vulgarity and Xifeng's overbearing ways, she managed to handle everything with tact and propriety, yet today she had still been subjected to such cruelty. She must be ill-fated—even more so than Daiyu. At this thought he was overcome with grief and found himself shedding tears unawares. Seeing that Xiren and the others were not in the room, he let fall a few bitter tears to his heart's content. Then he got up and, noticing that the wine he had sprayed on the clothes earlier was half dry, ironed them and folded them neatly. Seeing that she had left her handkerchief behind, still stained with tears, he took it to the washbasin, washed it, and hung it out to dry. Mingling joy and sorrow, he sat in melancholy for a while, then went to Sweet Rice Village, where he chatted for a time before they all dispersed after the lamps were lit.
Ping'er slept the night at Li Wan's quarters, while Sister Feng stayed with the Lady Dowager. Jia Lian returned to his room that evening, finding it cold and lonely; he could not very well go and fetch her, so he slept fitfully through the night. When he woke the next day and thought about what had happened the day before, he felt thoroughly ashamed and bitterly regretted it. Lady Xing, concerned that Jia Lian had been drunk the previous day, came early in the morning and summoned Jia Lian to the Lady Dowager's quarters. Jia Lian had no choice but to swallow his shame and go. He knelt before the Lady Dowager.
"What happened?" the Lady Dowager asked.
Jia Lian hastened to reply with a smile, "Yesterday I drank too much and offended you, Grandmother. I've come today to accept my punishment."
The Lady Dowager spat, "You wretched creature! You knock back some liquor and instead of behaving yourself and lying down like a decent man, you go beating your wife! Sister Feng is always boasting about herself—a regular tyrant she was, but yesterday she was frightened nearly out of her wits. If it hadn't been for me, you would have killed her. What would you have done then?"
Jia Lian was full of grievances but dared not defend himself. He could only admit his fault.
The Lady Dowager continued, "Haven't Sister Feng and Ping'er both got the makings of beauties? And still you're not satisfied! Every day you're sneaking around after every foul and filthy creature you can find, dragging them all into your room. Beating your wife and your own people on account of those trollops—for a young master of a great house, you've really disgraced yourself! If you have any regard for me, get up. I'll forgive you. Go and apologize properly to your wife, take her home, and I'll be pleased. Otherwise, you can leave—I dare not accept your kowtow."
When Jia Lian heard this, and saw Sister Feng standing there without her usual finery, her eyes swollen from crying, no powder on her face, her complexion sallow—she looked even more pitiful and endearing than usual. He thought, "I'd better apologize. Then we'll both be reconciled, and it will please the old lady too." Having made up his mind, he smiled and said, "I dare not disobey you, Grandmother, but this will only encourage her to be even more unreasonable."
The Lady Dowager laughed, "Nonsense! I know she's the most proper of all of you and would never offend anyone. If she ever wrongs you in the future, I'll naturally settle the matter and see that you get the upper hand."
When Jia Lian heard this, he got up and bowed to Sister Feng. "It seems the fault was mine. Second Sister, please forgive me."
Everyone in the room laughed.
The Lady Dowager said, "Sister Feng, don't be angry anymore. If you stay angry, I'll be angry."
Then she ordered someone to fetch Ping'er and told Sister Feng and Jia Lian to comfort her. When Jia Lian saw Ping'er, his feelings quite overcame him. As the saying goes, "A wife is not as good as a concubine, and a concubine is not as good as a stolen affair." When the Lady Dowager spoke, he stepped forward at once and said, "You suffered wrong yesterday, miss, and it was entirely my fault. It was on my account that Second Sister offended you. I've already apologized, and besides that, I'll apologize on Second Sister's behalf too."
He bowed again, which made the Lady Dowager and Sister Feng both laugh.
The Lady Dowager then told Sister Feng to go and comfort Ping'er. Ping'er hurried forward and kowtowed to Sister Feng. "On your birthday, I made you angry, Second Sister. I deserved to die for it."
Sister Feng was already filled with remorse, thinking that yesterday she had drunk too much wine and, forgetting their years of friendship, had flown into a rage on account of what others had said and humiliated Ping'er for no reason. Now seeing her behave like this, she felt both ashamed and heartbroken. She quickly pulled Ping'er to her feet, and tears rolled down her cheeks.
Ping'er said, "I've served you for several years, Second Sister, and you've never so much as scratched me. Even when you beat me yesterday, I didn't blame you. It was all that trollops's doing. You had every right to be angry."
As she spoke, she too began to weep.
The Lady Dowager then ordered the three of them to be escorted back to their quarters. "If anyone brings up this matter again, let me know at once. I don't care who it is—I'll give them a good beating with my cane."
The three of them kowtowed again to the Lady Dowager and to Lady Xing and Lady Wang. The old nurses acknowledged the order and escorted them back. When they reached the room and Sister Feng saw that they were alone, she said, "Do I look like the King of Hell or a she-devil? That trollops curses me to death, and you help her curse me too! Even in a thousand bad days there should be one good one. I've slaved away until I'm not even fit to be compared to a trollops—what face do I have left to go on living?"
As she spoke, she burst into tears again.
Jia Lian said, "Aren't you satisfied yet? Think carefully—whose fault was greater yesterday? Today, in front of everyone, I knelt and apologized. You've already gained enough face. If you keep on nagging, are you expecting me to kneel for you too? Pushing things too far is never good."
Sister Feng had nothing to say in reply. Ping'er gave a little snort and laughed. Jia Lian also laughed. "She's all over it again! Really, there's nothing I can do about her."
Just then, a maid came in to report that "Bao Er's wife has hanged herself." Jia Lian and Fengjie were both taken aback. Fengjie quickly composed herself and snapped, "She's dead, that's all. What's there to make such a fuss about?" Soon Lin Zhixiao's wife came in and whispered to Fengjie, "Bao Er's wife has hanged herself, and her mother's family wants to bring a lawsuit." Fengjie laughed, "Well, that's just fine. I was hoping for a lawsuit!" Lin Zhixiao's wife said, "I've been reasoning with them along with the others, and after some threats and a promise of some money, they agreed." Fengjie said, "I haven't a penny! Even if I had money, I wouldn't give it to them. Just let them sue. Don't try to talk them out of it, and don't threaten them either. Let them go right ahead and sue. If they lose, I'll charge them with 'extortion using a corpse'!" Lin Zhixiao's wife was at a loss when she saw Jia Lian give her a meaningful look. Understanding at once, she went out and waited. Jia Lian said, "I'll go out and see what's happening." Fengjie said, "Don't give them any money." Jia Lian went straight out and conferred with Lin Zhixiao, sending people to use both persuasion and pressure. In the end, he promised two hundred taels for the funeral expenses, and the matter was settled. Fearing there might be further trouble, Jia Lian also sent someone to inform Wang Ziteng and called in several coroners and constables to help with the funeral arrangements. When they saw how things stood, even though they might have wanted to dispute the matter, they dared not say a word and had no choice but to swallow their grievance. Jia Lian then instructed Lin Zhixiao to enter the two hundred taels in the annual accounts, distributing the expenses among various items to cover it up. He also gave Bao Er some money from his own pocket and consoled him, saying, "Another day I'll find you a better wife." Bao Er, having both face and money, had no reason to refuse, and he continued to serve Jia Lian faithfully. But that is another story.
Inside, though Fengjie was uneasy in her heart, she put on an air of unconcern. Finding no one in the room, she pulled Ping'er aside and laughed, "I drank too much yesterday. Don't be angry—let me see where I hit you." Ping'er said, "It wasn't that bad." Just then they heard that the young mistresses had all come in. To know what happened next, read the following chapter.
