Chapter 41: Jia Baoyu Savors Tea at Green Bower Nunnery; Liu Lao Lao Drunkenly Sleeps in Happy Red Court
Here Granny Liu held up her hands and cried with a chuckle, "When the flowers fall, they bear a big pumpkin." At this the whole company burst into laughter. After she had drunk the customary cup, she added mischievously, "Let me tell you plainly. My hands are clumsy, and I've had some wine. I'm afraid I might drop this porcelain cup and break it. If you have a wooden cup, fetch me one. If I knock that over, it won't matter." At this the company laughed again. Xifeng, hearing this, quickly smiled and said, "If you really want a wooden one, I'll fetch it. But let me say this first: wooden cups don't come singly. You have to drink from the whole set." Granny Liu reflected to herself, "I was only joking just now, but it turns out they really have them. I've often dined at the houses of wealthy country gentry and seen gold and silver cups, but I've never heard of wooden ones. Ah, I suppose they're wooden bowls for children—they just want to trick me into drinking more. Never mind, this wine is sweet as honeyed water; it won't do me any harm to drink more." Having thought this through, she said, "Bring them, then we'll see." Xifeng ordered Feng'er, "Go to the inner room in the front apartment and fetch the ten bamboo-root nested cups from the bookshelf." Feng'er assented and was just about to go when Yuanyang laughed, "I know those ten cups are too small. Besides, you just said wooden ones, and now you're fetching bamboo-root ones—that doesn't look right. Better bring the ten large nested cups of boxwood root, carved in the whole, from our place. Make her drink ten cups." Xifeng smiled, "Even better." Yuanyang then ordered someone to fetch them. Granny Liu was both amazed and delighted when she saw them. She was amazed that there were ten in a row, each smaller than the last—the largest was as big as a small basin, while the tenth was still twice the size of the cup in her hand. She was delighted by the exquisite carving, all landscapes, trees, and figures, with grass-style characters and seals. She quickly said, "Just bring the small one. Why so many?" Xifeng smiled, "There's no question of drinking from just one of these cups. Since we don't have anyone here who can drink that much, no one has dared to use them. Since you want them, and we've gone to the trouble of finding them, you must drink from each in turn." Granny Liu, thoroughly alarmed, quickly said, "I daren't. Dear miss, spare me!" The Lady Dowager, Aunt Xue, and Lady Wang, knowing she was an old woman who couldn't take much, smiled and said, "We're only joking. Don't drink too much—just this first cup." Granny Liu said, "Amida Buddha! I'll drink from the small cup. Keep this big one for me to take home and drink slowly." At this the company laughed again. Yuanyang had no choice but to order a servant to fill one of the large cups to the brim. Granny Liu held it in both hands and drank. The Lady Dowager and Aunt Xue both said, "Slowly, don't choke." Aunt Xue then told Xifeng to serve some dishes. Xifeng smiled, "What would you like to eat, granny? Tell me the name and I'll pick it up and feed you." Granny Liu said, "I don't know any names. Everything is good." The Lady Dowager smiled, "Pick some braised eggplant for her." Xifeng did as bidden and put some braised eggplant into Granny Liu's mouth, saying with a smile, "You eat eggplant every day. Try ours and see whether it's tasty." Granny Liu laughed, "Don't fool me. Eggplant doesn't taste like this. If it did, we wouldn't need to grow grain—we'd only grow eggplant." The others laughed, "It really is eggplant. We're not fooling you." Granny Liu said in surprise, "Really eggplant? I've been eating it all day without knowing. Miss, feed me some more. I want to chew it properly." Xifeng put some more into her mouth. Granny Liu chewed slowly for a while, then smiled, "It does have a little eggplant fragrance, but it still doesn't seem like eggplant. Tell me how it's made so I can make it too." Xifeng smiled, "It's not difficult. You peel fresh eggplant, take only the flesh, and cut it into small pieces the shape of nails. You fry it in chicken fat, then add chicken breast, dried mushrooms, fresh bamboo shoots, mushrooms, spiced dried bean curd, and various dried fruits, all cut into small pieces. You simmer it in chicken stock until dry, add sesame oil, mix in fermented bean paste, and store it in a tightly sealed porcelain jar. When you want to eat it, take some out and mix it with stir-fried chicken cubes." Granny Liu shook her head and stuck out her tongue, "My Buddha! It takes more than ten chickens to go with it. No wonder it tastes like that!" As they chatted and laughed, she slowly finished her wine, still examining the cup carefully. Xifeng smiled, "Still not satisfied? Have another cup." Granny Liu quickly said, "I can't. That would make me dead drunk. I just love how it's made—however did they do it?" Yuanyang smiled, "You've finished your wine. After all, what kind of wood is this cup?" Granny Liu laughed, "No wonder you don't recognize it, miss. You live behind gilded gates and embroidered doorways—how would you know wood! We live next door to the forests every day. When we're tired, we sleep leaning against the trees; when we're weary, we sit resting on them; in famine years, we eat them. We see them every day with our eyes, hear them with our ears, and talk about them with our mouths. So I can tell good from bad, true from false—I know wood. Let me have a look." As she said this, she examined the cup carefully for a while, then said, "A family like yours certainly wouldn't have anything cheap. You wouldn't keep wood that's easy to get. This cup is heavy in my hand—it's definitely not poplar. It must be yellow pine."
At this there was a general roar of laughter.
Presently an old woman came to ask the Lady Dowager, "The young ladies are all at the Fragrance Pavilion. Shall they start the performance at once, or wait a little longer?"
The Lady Dowager smiled, "I'd quite forgotten about them. Tell them to go ahead."
The old servant assent and left. Soon the strains of reed pipes, flutes and other instruments wafted to them through the trees, a refreshing breeze blowing and the air crisp and clear. The music so exhilarated them that Baoyu could not restrain himself. He took the pot and poured himself a cup which he drained at one gulp. He refilled it and was about to drink again when he saw that Lady Wang also wanted some wine and had ordered warm wine. Baoyu hastily took his cup to her and held it to her lips, and she took two sips from it.
When the warm wine arrived, Baoyu returned to his seat. Lady Wang brought the warming-pot to where the others were seated, and as everyone stood up too Aunt Xue got to her feet. The Lady Dowager quickly ordered Li Wan and Xifeng to take the pot from her.
"Let your aunt sit down, so that we can all be comfortable," she said.
Only then did Lady Wang hand the pot to Xifeng and sit down herself.
"Drink a couple of cups, everyone," said the Lady Oldager gaily. "We're really having fun today."
She raised her cup to Aunt Xue, then turned to Xiangyun and Baochai.
"You two girls have a drink too. Your cousin can't drink much, but don't let her off."
She drained her cup, and Xiangyun, Baochai and Daiyu did likewise.
Now Granny Liu, who had been enjoying the music as well as the wine, started dancing and clapping her hands in delight.
Baoyu left his seat and went over to Daiyu.
"Look at the way Granny Liu's carrying on!" he said with a grin.
"When the sage played music, all the hundred beasts danced," replied Daiyu. "Now we have just one ox."
All the girls laughed.
After the music stopped Aunt Xue stepped forward, smiling.
"I think we've all had enough to drink. Let's go out for a stroll before sitting down again."
The Lady Dowager was ready for a stroll too, so they all got up and went with her for a walk. She took Granny Liu along to stretch her legs, and led her to the foot of a hill where they rested for a while under some trees. She told her the names of the trees, rocks and flowers.
Granny Liu took it all in, then remarked, "Who would have thought that even the birds here in the city are so privileged? When they come to a place like this they grow prettier, and they can talk too."
Not understanding her, the others asked which birds she meant.
"The green parrots with red beaks on the golden perch in the veranda, I know," said Granny Liu. "But how did that black old crow in the cage grow a phoenix head and learn to talk too?"
At this they all burst out laughing.
Presently a maid came to ask whether they would like refreshments.
"I'm not hungry after those two cups of wine," said the Lady Dowager. "Well, bring them here. We'll just pick at them casually."
The maids carried over two tables and two small boxes. On opening them, they found two kinds of delicacies in each box. In one box were lotus-powder cakes with osmanthus sugar and pine-nut and goose-fat rolls; in the other box were tiny dumplings about an inch long...
"What are those stuffed with?" asked the Lady Dowager.
"Crab," the old women answered.
She frowned. "Too greasy. Who wants to eat them?"
The other delicacy was small, deep-fried pastries made with cream, but she did not care for those either. She offered them to Aunt Xue, who chose one of the cakes. The Lady Dowager took a roll, tasted it, and gave what was left to a maid.
Granny Liu, seeing how exquisite the little pastries were, picked one shaped like a peony.
"Our cleverest girls back home couldn't cut out paper ones as pretty as this," she said. "I want to eat it, but I hate to. I'd like to take some home to make flower patterns from."
Everyone laughed.
"I'll give you a whole jar to take home," said the Lady Dowager. "Eat this while it's hot."
The others just picked a couple of pieces each that they fancied. But Granny Liu, who had never tasted such things before and found them all so dainty and neatly arranged, tried one of each with Ban'er, and that cleared half the plate. Xifeng had the rest put onto two plates and a tray for Wen-guan and the other actresses to share.
Then a nurse came in carrying the little girl Xichun. They amused her for a while. She was playing with a big pomelo when she caught sight of Ban'er holding a Buddha's hand citron and wanted it too. The maids tried to coax her to give it up, but she started crying. So they quickly gave the pomelo to Ban'er and coaxed him into parting with the citron, which they handed to her. After playing with the citron all this time, Ban'er was now clutching some fruit to eat. Then he noticed how fragrant and round the pomelo was and thought it would make an even better toy to kick around like a ball, so he no longer wanted the citron.
After the tea, the Lady Dowager took Granny Liu to visit Green Bamboo Convent. Miao-yu hurried out to meet them. In the courtyard they found the flowers and trees in full bloom. "Of course, people who cultivate themselves here are always tending their gardens," the old lady said with a smile. "That's why it's even more attractive than other places." As she spoke she went towards the meditation hall in the east. Miao-yu smilingly invited them in.
"We've just been eating meat and drinking wine," said the Lady Dowager. "If we go into the shrine we may offend the Bodhisattva. Let's just sit here. If you have any good tea, bring us a cup and then we'll go."
Miao-yu hurried to brew some tea. Pao-yu watched carefully to see what she would do. She brought in on a small lacquer tray, carved in the shape of begonia flowers and inlaid with gold dragons, a small five-color covered cup from the Cheng kiln and presented it to the Lady Dowager.
"I don't drink Lu-an tea," said the old lady.
"I know," Miao-yu replied with a smile. "This is Patriarch's Eyebrows."
The Lady Dowager took it and asked what water had been used.
"Rain water saved from last year," Miao-yu answered with a smile.
The Lady Dowager drank half the cup, then handed it to Granny Liu with a smile. "You try this tea."
Granny Liu drank it all in one gulp. "Good, but a bit too light," she said, laughing. "It would be better if it were stronger."
The Lady Dowager and the rest all laughed. The others were all served in white porcelain covered cups from the official kilns.
Then Miao-yu pulled Pao-chai and Tai-yu by the sleeve and they went out with him. Pao-yu followed quietly. He found that Miao-yu had taken them to a side room where Pao-chai sat on the couch and Tai-yu squatted on Miao-yu's meditation cushion. Miao-yu fanned the stove to boil fresh water and brewed another pot of tea.
Pao-yu came in with a grin. "So you're having a private tea party."
"We didn't invite you," the two girls laughed. "You've come here again to cadge tea. There's no cup for you here."
As Miao-yu was about to get a cup, a Taoist nun came in to collect the cups from the main room. Miao-yu quickly told her, "Don't bother to wash that Cheng kiln cup, just put it away outside."
Pao-yu understood that because Granny Liu had used it, Miao-yu considered it dirty and did not want it anymore.
Then Miao-yu produced two other cups. One had a small handle on the side and was engraved with three characters in the official script "Jia Jia," followed in small regular script by the line "Treasured plaything of Wang Kai of the Jin Dynasty," and another line in small characters: "Su Shi of Meishan saw this in the imperial treasury in the fifth month of the fifth year of the Yuan-feng period." Miao-yu filled this cup and gave it to Pao-chai.
The other, shaped like a small alms bowl, was engraved with three characters in seal script: "Dian Xi Qiao." Miao-yu filled this and gave it to Tai-yu.
Then she poured Pao-yu a cup using the green jade goblet out of which she herself normally drank.
"It is said that all things should be treated equally," Pao-yu laughed. "Why do they get those rare antiques while I get a vulgar piece?"
"A vulgar piece?" said Miao-yu. "I'm not bragging, but I doubt whether you could find such a 'vulgar piece' even in your home."
"As the saying goes, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do,'" Pao-yu replied with a smile. "Having come here, naturally all gold, jade, and precious stones must be dismissed as vulgar."
Miao-yu was delighted at this. She then produced a huge cup carved from a single piece of bamboo root, twisting in nine curves and ten coils with a hundred and twenty joints, on the top of which was carved a coiling dragon. "This is the only one left," she said, laughing. "Can you drink a whole cup this size?"
"I can," said Pao-yu eagerly.
"Even if you can," said Miao-yu, "all this tea would go to waste. Have you never heard that 'one cup for savoring, two cups for quenching thirst like a fool, and three cups for drinking like an ox or a mule'? What would you look like drinking a whole big cup like this?" At this, Pao-chai, Tai-yu, and Pao-yu all burst out laughing.
Miao-yu poured from the pot until the cup was about one cupful. Pao-yu sipped it slowly and found it exceptionally delicate and refreshing, and he praised it again and again.
"If you hadn't come with them," Miao-yu said sternly, "I wouldn't have given you any tea today."
"I know," Pao-yu answered with a smile. "I won't accept your thanks. Just thank the two of them."
When Miao-yu heard this, she said, "That makes sense."
"Is this rain water from last year too?" Tai-yu asked.
Miao-yu gave a cold laugh. "For someone like you, you really are too vulgar to tell the difference. This is snow I collected from plum blossoms five years ago when I lived at the Hsuan-mu Pao-hsiang Temple. I got just one whole jar of it in a green-faced jar, and I've treasured it, buried it underground, and didn't open it until this summer. This is only the second time I've used it. How can you not tell the difference? How could last year's strained rain water be so light and delicate? It wouldn't be fit to drink."
Tai-yu knew that by nature she was eccentric and did not like to say too much, nor did she want to stay too long. After finishing her tea, she asked Pao-chai to leave with her.
Baoyu and Miaoyu said with a smile, "Even though that teacup is soiled, wouldn't it be a pity just to throw it away? In my opinion, why not give it to the poor old woman? She could sell it to get by. Do you think that would do?" Miaoyu listened, thought for a moment, and nodded. "Very well, then. It's just as well that cup was one I never used. If I had used it, I would have smashed it to pieces rather than give it to him. If you want to give it to him, I won't stop you—I'll just hand it to you. Take it and be quick about it." Baoyu smiled. "Of course. You certainly can't go talk to him and hand it over yourself—that would make you even dirtier by association. Just give it to me." Miaoyu then ordered someone to bring it and hand it to Baoyu. Baoyu took it and said, "Once we're outside, shall I have a few servant boys come down to the river and fetch several buckets of water to wash the floor?" Miaoyu smiled. "That would be even better. Just tell them to leave the water by the foot of the wall outside the mountain gate—they're not to come inside." Baoyu said, "Naturally." With that, he slipped the cup into his sleeve and handed it to a young maidservant in Grandmother Jia's quarters. "When Granny Liu leaves tomorrow, take this to her." Having made everything clear, Baoyu saw that Grandmother Jia had already come out and was preparing to leave. Miaoyu did not press them to stay. She saw them to the mountain gate, turned around, and closed the door. So much for that.
Now, Grandmother Jia felt weary and told Lady Wang and Yingchun and her other granddaughters to keep Aunt Xue company at the drinking, while she herself went to Paddy-Sweet Cottage to rest. Xifeng quickly ordered a small bamboo chair to be brought. Grandmother Jia sat in it, two old women carried it, and Xifeng, Li Wan, and all the maids and old women escorted them. So much for that.
Aunt Xue then took her leave. Lady Wang dismissed Wenguan and the others, distributed the food boxes to the maids to share, and took the opportunity to rest herself. She casually reclined on the couch where Grandmother Jia had been sitting, told a young maid to let down the blinds and massage her legs, and instructed her, "If you hear anything from the old lady's quarters, come and tell me at once." With that, she too drifted off to sleep.
Baoyu, Xiangyun, and the others watched as the maids set the food boxes down on the rocks. Some sat on the rocks, some on the grass beneath, some leaned against trees, and some lingered by the water—altogether a lively scene. Presently, Yuanyang came and wanted to take Granny Liu around to see the sights, and everyone hurried along to make fun of her. In due course they arrived at the memorial archway of the "Villa for Imperial Visits," and Granny Liu exclaimed, "Oh my! There's a big temple here!" And she dropped to her knees and kowtowed. The others doubled over with laughter. Granny Liu said, "What are you laughing at? I can read all the characters on that archway. We have more temples like that than anywhere, and they all have archways like this—the characters are the name of the temple." Everyone laughed and said, "So you know what temple this is?" Granny Liu looked up and pointed at the characters. "Aren't these the four characters 'Jade Emperor's Precious Hall'?" The others clapped their hands and stomped their feet, laughing, and were about to tease her further when Granny Liu felt a rumbling in her belly. She hastily pulled a young maid over, asked for two pieces of paper, and began to loosen her clothes. The others laughed but also quickly shouted, "You can't do that here!" They hurriedly ordered an old woman to take her to the latrine in the northeast corner. The old woman pointed out the spot and then gladly went off to rest herself.
Now Granny Liu, having drunk some wine, found her constitution unsuited to yellow wine, and having also eaten a great deal of rich, greasy food, she grew thirsty and drank several bowls of tea, which inevitably set her bowels moving. She squatted there for quite some time before she had finished.
When she came out from the privy, the wine had been checked by the wind, and being an elderly woman who had squatted for a long while, when she suddenly stood up, she felt her eyes swim and her head spin, and she could no longer make out the path. She looked around in every direction—there were nothing but trees, rocks, terraces, and buildings everywhere—but she could not tell which way led where. She could only pick out a pebble path and slowly make her way along it. When she reached the buildings, she could not find the door. After searching for some time, she suddenly noticed a bamboo fence, and Granny Liu thought to herself: "So there's a trellis of runner beans here too." Thinking this, she followed along the flower screen and came to a moon-gate, through which she entered. Before her she suddenly saw a stretch of pool, only seven or eight feet wide, with stone-lined banks, through which clear jade-green water flowed off to the other side, and a white stone slab laid across it horizontally. Granny Liu crossed over the stone and walked along the pebbled path, turning two bends, when she saw a door. She went through the doorway, and before her a young girl came out, her face full of smiles, to greet her. Granny Liu said with a laugh, "You girls left me behind, so I've gone bumping around until I ended up here." When she spoke, however, she noticed that the girl made no reply. Granny Liu went forward to take her hand, and with a thud she ran into a wooden partition, bumping her head so sorely it hurt. Looking closely, she saw that it was nothing but a painting. Granny Liu thought to herself: "So paintings can be made to stand out so lifelike." Thinking this, she looked, and at the same time reached out to touch it—but it was perfectly smooth all over. She nodded and sighed twice. Turning around, she found a small door, on which hung a soft curtain of greenish-blue sprinkled flowers. Granny Liu lifted the curtain and entered, and looking up, she saw that the walls on all four sides were exquisitely carved and translucent, with swords, zithers, vases, and incense burners all mounted upon them, embroidered cages and gauze covers, golden colors and gleaming pearls, and even the bricks underfoot were all of green jade with floral engravings. Her eyes grew more and more bewildered, and she looked for a door to go out—but where was a door? On the left was a bookcase, on the right a screen. She had just found a door behind the screen and turned through it, when she saw her old relative also coming in from outside. Granny Liu was astonished and quickly asked, "I suppose you came looking for me because I haven't been home these past few days. Which young lady brought you in?" But her old relative only smiled and would not answer. Granny Liu said with a laugh, "What a country bumpkin you are! Seeing the flowers in this garden so fine, you've stuffed your head full of them, never caring whether you live or die." Her old relative still made no reply. Then it suddenly occurred to her: "I've often heard that wealthy noble families have a kind of dressing mirror—could it be that I'm inside a mirror?" Having said this, she reached out and touched it, and looking closely, it was indeed so—carved hollow sandalwood panels on all four sides with a mirror set into the middle. She said, "This is blocking the way—how am I to get out?" As she spoke, she kept on feeling about with her hands. This mirror was fitted with a Western mechanism that could be opened and closed. Quite by accident, while Granny Liu was fumbling about, by a lucky coincidence the force of her touch struck the spring, and the mirror swung aside, revealing the door. Granny Liu was both startled and delighted. She stepped forward and suddenly saw an exquisite bed with the finest curtains. By now she was more than half drunk, and she was also weary from walking, so she plopped herself down onto the bed, meaning only to rest a moment—little expecting that her body would not obey her, swaying back and forth, her eyes growing dim, and with a tilt of her body she fell fast asleep on the bed.
Meanwhile, the others waited for her but she did not appear. Ban'er, seeing that his grandmother was gone, burst into tears in distress. Everyone laughed and said, "Could she have fallen into the privy? Quick, send someone to have a look!" They accordingly ordered two old women servants to go and search, and they reported back that she was not there. Everyone searched in all directions but could not find her. Xiren reckoned the likely route: "She's drunk and lost her way, and she's gone along this path toward our back courtyard. If she's gone through the flower screen and entered the back door, even though she'll bump into things, there will be young maids there who'll know. But if she hasn't gone through the flower screen and has gone further to the southwest, if she gets around it she'll be all right, but if she can't get around it, she'll have a fine time going round and round. I'll go and have a look." Thinking this, she went back and entered Yihong Courtyard and called out, but it turned out that the young maids in those rooms had slipped off to play.
Once Xiren had entered the room and passed through the ornamental partition, she heard snoring as loud as thunder. Hurrying in, she was met with the stench of wine and flatulence. Glancing around, she saw Granny Liu lying on her back on the bed, arms and legs flung out. Xiren was terribly frightened and rushed forward to shake her awake—dead or alive, it hardly mattered. Granny Liu started awake, and opening her eyes to see Xiren, scrambled up at once. "Miss!" she cried. "I've done wrong! But I haven't soiled the bed-curtains." Even as she spoke, she began brushing at them with her hands. Xiren, afraid of attracting attention and letting Baoyu find out, put a finger to her lips to silence her. She quickly placed three or four handfuls of lily incense in the censer and replaced the lid. After tidying up a little—thankfully, there had been no vomiting—she whispered with a smile, "It doesn't matter. Leave it to me. Come with me." Granny Liu followed Xiren out to the young maids' room, where Xiren told her to sit down and said, "Just say you were drunk and fell asleep on the rockery." Granny Liu nodded that she understood. Xiren gave her two bowls of tea, and only then did the wine begin to wear off. "Whose exquisite boudoir is this?" Granna Liu asked. "It's so finely appointed—it's like something from heaven itself." Xiren smiled faintly. "This is Master Bao's bedroom." Granny Liu was frightened into silence. Xiren led her out by the front way, and when she saw the others, she simply said Granny Liu had fallen asleep among the weeds and she had fetched her. No one paid the matter any mind, and that was the end of it.
Presently the Dowager awoke, and supper was laid in Rice Fragrance Village. The Dowager felt too listless to eat and took a small bamboo sedan chair back to her quarters to rest, telling Xifeng and the others to go ahead and dine. Only then did the young ladies return to the Garden. What happened next, you will hear in the following chapter.
