太平時有閑情逸興,是無能之人;
我想手擎旌麾,遠去江海的吳興;
Before Going to Wuxing – On Leyou Terrace
In times of peace, to taste such pleasures is the lot of the incompetent;
I love the idle lone cloud, and love the stillness of monks.
I would take my banner and depart for the rivers and seas,
Ascending the Leyou Plain to gaze upon the Zhao Mausoleum.
[Notes]:
1. "In times of peace" line: Meaning that in this era of tranquility, the poet himself possesses such leisurely inclinations.
2. Zhao Mausoleum: The tomb of Emperor Taizong of Tang.
[Rhyming translation]:
In peaceful times, to have such leisurely delight is the mark of the incompetent;
I love the idle lone cloud, and love the quiet of monks.
I wish to take my banner and depart for the rivers and seas of Wuxing;
Once more ascend the Leyou Plain, and gaze afar upon the Zhao Mausoleum.
[Critical commentary]:
This poem expresses the author's desire to serve the country as a provincial governor while yet being unable to bear leaving the capital — a sentiment of loyal devotion to the sovereign and love for the nation. It begins with the ascent of the Leyou Plain and ends with the gaze upon the Zhao Mausoleum. His fervent love for the homeland and his longing for a golden age are evident; his willingness to sacrifice for the country and the frustration of unfulfilled ambitions are equally apparent. Concise and profound, it is steeped in restrained melancholy.
