The Eastern Suburbs
Confined to my office for the whole year,
I emerge to the suburbs at the clear dawn.
Willows scatter a gentle breeze,
Green mountains calm my troubled thoughts.
By the thickets I rest as I please,
Along the stream I wander and then return again.
A fine mist veils the fragrant meadow,
Where does the spring turtle-dove sing?
Delighting in seclusion, my heart often pauses,
Yet following my duties, I must hasten once more.
When at last I resign, I will build a cottage here—
In emulating Tao Yuanming, I may truly find what I seek.
