Passing the Night at Xuyi County

Moored by the mast, I drift to Huai Town,

My anchored boat now rests by a lone inn's bound.

Vast winds arise and stir the waves on high,

The dimming sun sinks down across the western sky.

The people return—mountain walls grow dark,

The wild geese descend—reed isles gleam white, a stark

And lonely sight. In this long, solitary night,

I think of the passes of Qin, a sleepless guest,

Listening to the bells that break my restless rest.
