Banquet with Scholars at the Prefecture Office in the Rain

Armed guards stand in rows with painted halberds,

The chamber is bathed in a faint, fragrant breeze.

From the sea a storm of wind and rain arrives,

Cooling the ponds and pavilions in tranquil ease.

My weariness and ailments now begin to fade,

Once more the hall is filled with honored guests arrayed.

I blush to dwell in such a lofty, spacious place,

When I have not yet seen the people find their peace.

When reason clears the mind, right and wrong depart;

When nature is fulfilled, all worldly traces depart.

Rich meats are forbidden by the season's rule,

But fruits and vegetables we gladly share and fuel.

I bow to sip a single cup of wine,

I raise my head to hear verses fine as jade and gold.

My spirit soars, my body feels as light as air,

My thoughts would ride the wind and brave the sky.

In Wu, the land of letters, culture thrives,

A vast ocean of talents gathers here today.

Now I see how great this noble province stands—

It is not merely a realm of wealth and tribute paid.
