Passing by Jia Yi's House in Changsha

Three years an exile, lingering here in grief,

Through ages, only the sorrow of the Chu guest remains.

Among autumn grass I seek where he once walked—now only men are gone;

In cold woods I watch, vainly, the slanting sun.

The Han emperor, though famed for virtue, showed him scant favor;

The Xiang River, unmoved, cares nothing for the elegy cast upon its waves.

Where the silent hills and rivers wither and fall—

Why, sir, were you banished to the edge of the world?
