Ascending the Tower (Du Fu)
**Ascending the Tower**
*Du Fu*
Flowers draw near the high tower and grieve the traveler's heart—
When the realm is beset with troubles, I climb here.
The spring hues of the Jin River come flowing across heaven and earth;
The drifting clouds over Jade Fortress shift through ancient and modern times.
The Polar Throne of the court shall never be moved;
The bandit raiders of the western mountains—let them not encroach.
How pitiable that the later lord still has his shrine;
At dusk I chant, for now, the *Liangfu Song*.
