Seeing Off a Monk Returning to Japan
On foreign shores I drift as fate decrees—
My eastward road seems but a dream.
The floating sky spreads vast across the sea,
Beyond the world, my dharma boat rides light.
Through moonlit waters I attain the still of Chan;
Fish and dragons listen to my Sanskrit chants.
Only that lone lamplight—
Its image bright across ten thousand miles before my eyes.
