New Year's Work (Liu Changqing)

My heart acutely longs for home as the new year draws near,

Standing alone by heaven's edge, I shed a silent tear.

Old age finds me still ranked beneath another's name,

While spring returns to nature long before it reaches me.

With apes of the mountain ridges I share the dawn and dusk,

With willows by the river I endure the mist and wind.

Already I resemble the Grand Historian of Changsha in his exile—

From this day on, how many more years must I thus remain?
