Seeking Lu Hongjian and Not Finding Him
Though his new home lies just beyond the town wall,
Wild paths lead through mulberry and hemp beyond the wall.
By the fence, chrysanthemums he planted late this year—
Autumn has come, but no blooms have yet appeared.
I knock at his gate—no dog barks in reply;
About to leave, I ask the neighbor near the western sky.
"He's gone into the mountains," they tell me when I ask,
"He won't be back until the setting sun's last task."
