Dreaming of Li Bai (Wandering Clouds Travel All Day)

**Dreaming of Li Bai**

Clouds drift all day long; the wanderer has not come for a long time.

For three nights I have dreamed of you often, so dear to me, revealing your intent.

You told me of your return, always pressed and hurried, bitterly lamenting how hard the journey was.

On the rivers and lakes there are many storms and waves—

the boat and oars fear capsizing.

You go out the door, scratching your white head,

as if burdened by the ambitions of a lifetime.

Caps and carriages fill the capital,

yet this man alone stands haggard and worn.

Who says the net of heaven is vast and wide?

Growing old, your talent only brings you hardship.

A name that lasts a thousand autumns and ten thousand years—

a lonely affair, all that remains behind.
