Chapter 16
Jia Yuanchun Is Selected for the Phoenix Hall of Literary Glory;
Qin Zhong Dies an Untimely Death and Passes to the Yellow Springs
Baoyu, seeing that the outer study had been got ready, had arranged to study by night with Qin Zhong. But Qin Zhong, whose constitution was naturally frail, had caught a chill in the countryside, and his secret assignations with little nun Zhineng had left him lacking in proper care. On his return he had a cough and a cold, no appetite for food, and looked altogether so unwell that he did not dare to leave his house and had to stay at home to recuperate. Baoyu was much disappointed and had no choice but to resign himself to the situation and wait patiently until Qin Zhong had fully recovered before arranging another meeting.
By now Xifeng had received Yun Guang's reply, and the matter had been settled. The old nun went to inform the Zhang family, and sure enough, Commander Shou swallowed his anger and accepted the return of the betrothal gifts. Who would have thought that the Zhang parents, so greedy for wealth and influence, had raised a daughter who was both principled and deeply devoted? On learning that her parents had broken off her previous engagement, she quietly hanged herself with a hempen cord. When Commander Shou's son heard that Jin Ge had taken her own life, being himself a man of deep feeling, he threw himself into the river and died too, faithful to the bond of husband and wife. Both the Zhang and the Li families were left in an awkward position, having lost both their people and their money. Here, however, Xifeng sat back and pocketed three thousand taels of silver, and even Lady Wang and the others had not the slightest inkling of what had happened. From this time on, Xifeng grew ever bolder and more daring, and whenever similar affairs arose thereafter, she acted with complete abandon. But there is no need to dwell on this.
One day happened to be Jia Zheng's birthday, and the entire households of both Ningguo and Rongguo Mansions had gathered to celebrate in great festivity. Suddenly a gate attendant rushed in and, hastening to the banquet table, announced, "Lord Xia, the Eunuch-in-Chief of the Six Palaces, has come with an imperial decree." This so startled Jia She, Jia Zheng, and all the others that they knew not what news this might portend. They stopped the opera at once, cleared the banquet, set out an incense table, and opened the central gate to kneel in reception. Soon the Eunuch-in-Chief, Xia Shouzhong, arrived on horseback, attended by a retinue of eunuchs before and behind. Xia Shouzhong was carrying no edict or decree. He dismounted before the eaves, his face wreathed in smiles, walked into the hall, and stood facing south. "By special decree," he announced, "Jia Zheng is summoned immediately to court to have an audience with His Majesty in the Linjing Palace." With that, he did not even stay for tea but mounted his horse and rode away. Jia She and the rest had no idea what this might mean and had no choice but to change their clothes hastily and proceed to court.
The entire household under the Lady Dowager's care was in a state of anxious agitation, and messengers on horseback kept galloning back and forth with news. After about four hours, Lai Da and three or three or four other stewards came panting through the inner gate to bring congratulations, saying at the same time, "By the Master's orders, the Old Lady is to lead the ladies at once to court to express gratitude for the Emperor's favor." The Lady Dowager, who had been standing in a state of agitation on the veranda of the great hall, was surrounded by Lady Xing, Lady Wang, Lady You, Li Wan, Xifeng, Yingchun and her sisters, and Aunt Xue. When this news arrived, the Lady Dowager summoned Lai Da to ask for particulars. Lai Da reported, "We servants waited outside the Linjing Gate and had no way of learning what was happening inside. Later Eunuch Xia himself came out to offer congratulations, saying that our eldest young lady had been elevated to the rank of Secretary in the Phoenix Hall of Literary Glory and additionally invested as Consort of Virtue and Merit. Then the Master came out and gave us the same message. The Master has now proceeded to the Eastern Palace. He begs the Old Lady to lead the ladies at once to express their gratitude." Only when the Lady Dowager and the others heard this did their minds become settled, and their faces were all wreathed in smiles of joy. They then dressed in full formal regalia according to their rank. The Lady Dowager, accompanied by Lady Xing, Lady Wang, and Lady You, entered the palace in four large sedan chairs. Jia She and Jia Zhen, having also changed into court dress, led Jia Rong and Jia Qiang in attending upon the Lady Dowager's sedan. From that moment, high and low, inside and out, in both the Ningguo and Rongguo Mansions, there was not a soul who was not delighted and elated. Every face bore an expression of pride and satisfaction, and the air was filled with a hubbub of animated conversation.
It happened that recently Zhineng of the Water Moon Nunnery had secretly fled into the city and gone to the Qin family's house to see Qin Zhong. Unexpectedly, Qin Ye discovered her, drove Zhineng out, and gave Qin Zhong a beating. The old man himself, overwhelmed with rage, brought on a recurrence of his chronic illness and died within three or five days. Qin Zhong, already of a weak constitution and still unwell from his previous illness, had now been caned as well. When he saw that his old father had died of anger, his remorse and grief were beyond expression, and he developed many new symptoms on top of his existing illness. Baoyu therefore felt a deep, unaccountable sense of loss. Even the news of Yuanchun's elevation did not dispel his melancholy. How the Lady Dowager and the others expressed their gratitude at court, how they returned home, how friends and relatives came to offer congratulations, how lively the Ningguo and Rongguo Mansions had been in recent days, how proud and pleased everyone was—all this Baoyu regarded as though it were nothing to him and paid not the slightest heed. For this reason, the others teased him for being more eccentric than ever.
It was fortunate that Jia Lian and Daiyu were returning home and had sent ahead a messenger to announce their arrival the following day. When Baoyu heard this, he felt somewhat cheered. On asking for details, he learned that Jia Yucun had also come to the capital for an audience and that, through repeated memorials of recommendation by Wang Ziteng, he had been appointed to fill a metropolitan vacancy. Being of the same clan as Jia Lian and having once been Daiyu's teacher, he had traveled with her as a companion. Lin Ru Hai had already been buried in the family ancestral graves, and all matters having been settled, Jia Lian had then proceeded to the capital. They should have arrived within the month, but having heard the glad tidings of Yuanchun's elevation, they had traveled day and night and had arrived safely all along the way. Baoyu cared only to learn that Daiyu was "safe" and paid no attention to the rest.
Only after an interminable wait did the next day at last arrive, and when the hour had slipped past noon, the report came: "Master Lian and Miss Lin have entered the house." When they met, grief and joy were mingled together, and inevitably they wept bitterly for a while before turning to words of rejoicing. Baoyu studied Daiyu closely and found her more ethereal and refined than ever. Daiyu had brought with her a great many books, and she busied herself sweeping her bedroom, arranging the furnishings, and distributing paper, brushes, and other such things to Baochai, Yingchun, Baoyu, and the others. Baoyu then carefully took out the precious wagtail-scented sachet that the Northern Prince had given him and offered it to Daiyu. Daiyu said, "Some smelly man had his hands on it! I don't want it." She flung it down and would not accept it. Baoyu had no choice but to take it back, and for the moment nothing more was said.
Meanwhile, after Jia Lian had returned home and paid his respects to the family, he went back to his own quarters. It happened that Xifeng had been busy of late with many matters and had not a moment's leisure. Seeing that Jia Lian had returned from his long journey, she could not but make time to receive him. There were no outsiders in the room, so she smiled and said: "Great joy to His Excellency the Imperial Son-in-law! Your Excellency must have suffered much dust and toil on the road. Your humble servant heard yesterday from the first courier that Your Excellency's carriage would arrive today, so I prepared a small cup of wine to wash the dust from your journey. I wonder if Your Excellency would deign to accept it?" Jia Lian said with a smile: "How dare I, how dare I. Many thanks, many thanks." Then Ping'er and the maids came in to pay their respects, and tea was served. Jia Lian asked about all that had happened in the household during his absence and thanked Xifeng for her labor in managing affairs. Xifeng said: "How could I manage such matters! My knowledge is shallow, my tongue is clumsy, my heart is too straightforward—if someone gives me a stick, I take it for a 'needle.' My face is too soft; if anyone speaks me a few kind words, my heart melts with pity. What is more, I have never experienced any great affair, and my courage is small. If Her Ladyship is ever the least bit displeased, I am so frightened I cannot sleep at all. I begged to be excused several times, but Her Ladyship would not allow it. On the contrary, she said that I was seeking an easy life and refused to learn. Little does she know that I am wringing sweat with anxiety! I dare not say one word too many, nor take one step too far. You know, as well as I, that among all the stewardesses in this household, which one is easy to deal with? If you are off by a little, they laugh and make sport of you; if you lean to one side, they curse the mulberry tree while pointing at the cick-pea. 'Watching a fight from the mountaintop,' 'killing with a borrowed sword,' 'fanning the flames,' 'standing on the dry shore,' and 'knocking over an oil bottle without righting it'—they are fully equipped with all the martial arts. Besides, I am young and, first of all, cannot command the respect of the crowd, so I cannot blame them for not taking me seriously. What is even more ridiculous is that in that other house the younger Rong's wife suddenly died, and Elder Brother Zhen again and again knelt before Her Ladyship to plead with her, asking only that I help him for a few days. I declined repeatedly, but Her Ladyship absolutely would not allow it, so I had to obey. In the end I threw everything into such utter chaos that there was no order left at all, and to this day Elder Brother Zhen still regrets it and complains. Now that you have come, when you see him tomorrow, do patch things up for me and say that I am young and have never seen the world—who told the Elder Master to make such a wrong appointment?" Just as she was speaking, they heard someone talking outside, and Xifeng asked: "Who is it?" Ping'er came in and replied: "Your Ladyship's sister sent Xiangling to ask me a question. I have already answered her and sent her back." Jia Lian said with a smile: "Ah yes, just now when I was visiting your aunt, I unexpectedly came face to face with a young woman—she was remarkably pretty and elegant. I did not think we had anyone like her in our household, and when I asked your aunt about it, who should it be but the little maid bought to come up to the capital, Xiangling? She has become the chamberwoman of that great fool Xue, and since she has been formally installed she has grown even more beautiful. That great fool Xue has truly disgraced her." Xifeng said: "Hmph! After a trip to Suzhou and Hangzhou, one would think he would have seen something of the world, but he is still as greedy as ever, his eyes bigger than his belly. If you want her, it's nothing to me—shall I go and trade Ping'er for her? That old rascal Xue is the sort who 'has his eye on the pot while eating from the bowl.' This past year, because he could not get Xiangling, he gave your aunt no end of trouble. But your aunt saw that Xiangling was not only beautiful in appearance but, in her conduct and behavior, different from other girls—gentle and quiet, quite the equal of a young mistress. So she went to the trouble of setting out wine and inviting guests and formally made her a concubine. But before half a month had passed, he was treating her like the wind in a horse stable. I, for one, am sorry about it." Before she had finished speaking, a page from the inner gate came to report: "The Master is waiting for the Second Master in the great study." Jia Lian heard this and hurriedly straightened his clothes and went out.
Here Xifeng asked Ping'er, "What did your aunt want just now that she went to the trouble of sending Xiangling over here?" Ping'er laughed. "Xiangling didn't come at all. I borrowed her to make up an excuse for a moment. You see, Sister Wang's wife is getting more and more careless—she doesn't even have a proper plan anymore." Then she walked over to Xifeng's side and whispered, "Your interest money—it didn't come when it was late, nor when it was early, but just now that the Second Master is home, she had to bring this along. Luckily I ran into her in the main hall. If I hadn't, she would have left after reporting to you, and if the Second Master happened to ask what kind of interest money it was, of course you wouldn't hide it from him—you'd have to tell him the truth. Our Second Master's temper—he'd dig money out of an oil vat to spend it. If he heard you had this private fund of your own, he wouldn't rest easy until he'd spent it. So I hurried and took it from her and gave her a scolding. Who'd have thought you'd overhear and ask, so I made up that story about Xiangling coming." Xifeng laughed when she heard this. "So that's it—your aunt, knowing your Second Master was here, suddenly sent one of her maids over for no reason? So you little minx were playing tricks."
While they were talking, Jia Lian had come in, and Xifeng ordered the food and wine set out, and husband and wife sat facing each other. Though Xifeng was a good drinker, she didn't dare indulge herself and merely kept Jia Lian company. Presently, Jia Lian's old wet nurse, Nurse Zhao, came in, and Jia Lian and Xifeng urged her to have some wine and invited her to sit on the kang. Nurse Zhao firmly refused. Ping'er and the others had already placed a low stool below the kang's edge, with a small footrest beside it, and Nurse Zhao sat on the footrest. Jia Lian picked two dishes of food from the table and put them on the stool for her to eat by herself. Xifeng said, "Mother can't chew that hard stuff—you'll only hurt your teeth grinding on it." Then she said to Ping'er, "I said earlier that that bowl of ham-stewed pork knuckle was very tender and just right for Mother to eat. Why didn't you go have them heat it up for her?" She added, "Mother, taste this Huiquan wine your son brought." Nurse Zhao said, "I'll drink, and you have a cup too, madam—what's the harm? Just don't overdo it. I came running over now not really for the wine, but because I have a serious matter on my mind. I hope you'll keep it in mind, madam, and look out for me a bit. Our master here, he only talks a fine game, but when it comes down to it he forgets about me. It's a good thing I nursed him from a baby to this size. I'm old now, and I have two sons after all—if you could give them a little special consideration, no one else would dare show their teeth at me. I've begged you over and over again, and you always agree so readily, but up to now it's been nothing but dry promises. And now this great piece of good fortune has dropped from the sky—where won't they need people? So I came to speak to you about this seriously. If I had to depend on our master, I'd probably starve to death."
Xifered laughed. "Mother, rest easy—I'll take care of both your milk-sons. You nursed this son from a baby—don't you know his temperament? He gives his own flesh and blood to outsiders who have nothing to do with him. But right here are your milk-sons—isn't each one better than anyone else? If you look out for them, who would dare say the word 'no'? It would be a waste to let outsiders have the benefit instead.—I've said it wrong, too—what we look on as 'outsiders,' you look on as 'insiders.'" Everyone in the room burst out laughing. Nurse Zhao laughed without stopping too and said a prayer. "Why, a blue sky has come out of this room! When it comes to those messy notions of 'insiders' and 'outsiders,' our master doesn't have them—he's just soft-faced and soft-hearted, and he can't hold out when someone pleads with him a couple of times." Xifered laughed. "That's right—he's soft and kind to his 'insiders.' It's only with us womenfolk that he's hard and tough!" Nurse Zhao laughed. "Madam, you've said it all too thoroughly. I'm delighted—let me have another good cup of wine. From now on that madam is in charge, and I'll have nothing to worry about."
At this point Jia Lian felt somewhat embarrassed, merely forcing a smile as he drank his wine, muttering the words "nonsense" — "Quick, bring the rice. I still need to go over to Uncle Zhen's place to discuss some matters after I've eaten."
Xifeng said, "Well, don't let it delay your important business. What did your father want you for just now?"
Jia Lian replied, "It's about the Imperial visit home."
Xifeng hastily asked, "Has the matter of the Imperial visit actually been approved?"
Jia Lian said with a smile, "It's not entirely certain yet, but there's an eight-out-of-ten chance."
Xifeng laughed, "One can see the great favor of the present Emperor. In all the stories and plays I've heard and seen since ancient times, there's never been anything like this."
Aunt Zhao chimed in, "Indeed! I'm getting old and muddled. I've heard everyone above and below clamoring about it all these days — this Imperial visit business — but I didn't pay it any mind. Now they're talking about it again. What exactly is the story behind it all?"
Jia Lian said, "The present Emperor, in his devotion to the hearts of all people, recognizes that nothing in this world is greater than 'filial piety.' He reasons that the nature between parents and children is one and the same — it should not be divided by rank or station. The Emperor himself attends upon the Retired Emperor and the Empress Dowager day and night, yet even he feels he cannot fully express his filial devotion. Observing that the imperial consorts and ladies-in-waiting have all been in the palace for many years, separated from the sight and voice of their parents, how could they not long for them? For children to yearn for their parents is only natural and proper. If parents at home, consumed with longing for their daughters, cannot see them, and should they fall ill or even die from it — all because of Our confinement of them, preventing them from fulfilling the natural bonds of family — this would be a great violation of Heaven's harmony. Therefore the Emperor petitioned the Retired Emperor and the Empress Dowager, requesting that on the second and sixth days of each month, the families of the imperial consorts be permitted to enter the palace to pay their respects and visit. The Retired Emperor and the Empress Dowager were greatly pleased, praising the present Emperor's supreme filial piety and pure benevolence, his embodiment of Heaven's principle and understanding of all things. Thereupon the two Venerable Sages issued an edict, saying that since the families entering the palace must still observe state protocol and court etiquette, mother and daughter would not be able to fully express their feelings. They therefore opened a gate of great convenience and grace, specially issuing an imperial decree to all families of imperial consorts and noble relations: in addition to the privilege of entering the palace on the second and sixth days, any family with a separate compound and courtyard, where precautions and security could be maintained, might request that the imperial consort's palanquin enter their private residence, so that the private affections of flesh and blood and the deepest sentiments of natural family bonds might be somewhat fulfilled. When this decree was issued, who did not leap with joy and gratitude? Now the father of Honorable Lady Zhou has already begun work at his residence, building a separate compound for the Imperial visit. And the father of Imperial Consort Wu, Wu Tianyou, has gone outside the city to survey a site. Isn't this as good as nine-tenths certain?"
Aunt Zhao said, "Amida Buddha! So that's how it is! In that case, our family must also make preparations to receive our eldest young lady?"
Jia Lian said, "What else needs to be said? If not, what would we be so busy with right now?"
Xifeng laughed, "If that's really so, then I'll get to see a grand spectacle too! What a pity I'm a few years too young. If I had been born twenty or thirty years earlier, these old folks wouldn't look down on me for having seen nothing of the world. When it comes to the story of the Great Founding Emperor imitating Shun's royal tour — that was more exciting than an entire book — and I just missed the fortune of being there!"
Aunt Zhao said, "Oh my! That was a once-in-a-thousand-years event! I was just old enough to remember it then. Our Jia family was in Gusu and Yangzhou supervising the construction of sea-going vessels and repairing the sea walls. Just preparing for the Emperor's visit once — the silver we spent was like pouring out the ocean itself! Speaking of which..."
Xifeng quickly took over, "Our princely household also prepared for it once. At that time my grandfather was solely in charge of tribute and homage from all foreign nations. Whenever foreigners came, it was our family who supported and housed them. All the foreign ships and goods from Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan, and Zhejiang belonged to our family."
Old Nurse Zhao said, "Who doesn't know that? There's a saying going around now: 'The Dragon King of the Eastern Sea lacks a white-jade bed; he's come to beg from the Prince of Jiangnan.' That's talking about your family, my lady. And then there's the Zhen family down in Jiangnan — oh my, what a grand show! They've received the Emperor four times on his tours. If we hadn't seen it with our own eyes, no one we told would believe it. Never mind that silver's like dirt to them — everything under heaven, they've piled up in mountains and heaps to the seas, and the words 'what a waste' simply don't enter their heads."
Xifeng said, "I've often heard our old masters say the same thing — of course I believe it. I just wonder how that family managed to get so fabulously rich."
Old Nurse Zhao said, "Let me tell you something, my lady. It's nothing but taking the Emperor's own silver and spending it on the Emperor! What family has that kind of money to buy such a hollow spectacle?"
Just as they were chatting away, Lady Wang sent someone to see whether Xifeng had finished her meal. Xifeng knew there was business waiting for her, so she hastily ate half a bowlful, rinsed her mouth, and was about to leave when a page from the inner gate reported: "Master Rong and Master Qiang from the Eastern Mansion have come." Jia Lian had just rinsed his mouth, and P'ing-erh was holding the basin for him to wash his hands. Seeing the two young men arrive, he asked, "What is it? Speak quickly." Xifeng paused to wait and hear what they had to report.
Jia Rong spoke first: "My father sent me to report to you, uncle: the masters have already decided. Starting from the eastern side, using the Eastern Mansion's garden as the base and extending northward, they've measured it all out — one and a half li in total. It's enough to build the Imperial Concubine's villa. They've already sent for someone to draw up the plans, and work begins tomorrow. Uncle has just returned home and must be tired — there's no need to come over to our side. If there's anything to discuss, please come tomorrow morning and we'll talk it over in person."
Jia Lian smiled and said quickly, "Thank His Lordship for his consideration — I won't come over then. This is exactly the right plan for saving trouble, and building will be easier too. If we had to acquire land somewhere else, it would be even more troublesome and wouldn't look proper. Go back and tell him this is very good. If the masters want to change anything, it will be up to His Lordship to persuade them against it — under no circumstances should another site be chosen. Tomorrow morning I'll come to pay my respects to His Lordship, and we'll discuss the details."
Jia Rong hastily answered, "Yes, yes, yes."
Jia Qiang then stepped forward and reported: "Regarding the trip to Gusu to engage instructors, purchase girls, and buy musical instruments and theatrical costumes — His Lordship has assigned me to lead the mission, along with two sons of the Lai household steward, and the two gentlemen Shan Pinren and Bu Guxiu. That's why he sent me to see you, uncle."
Jia Lian looked Jia Qiang up and down and smiled. "Are you up for this line of work? It's not a very big matter, but there's plenty of room for skimming."
Jia Qiang smiled. "I'll just have to learn as I go."
Jia Rong, standing beside Xifeng in the shadow of the lamp, quietly tugged at her sleeve. Xifeng understood and said with a smile, "You worry too much. Does His Lordship know less about employing people than we do? You're afraid he's not up to it. Who is up to it? The boys have grown up so big — 'even if you've never eaten pork, you've seen pigs run.' His Lordship is sending him along as a figurehead — surely you don't expect him to seriously haggle prices and negotiate with brokers! In my opinion, it's fine as it is."
Jia Lian said, "Naturally that's so. It's not that I'm rejecting the idea — I just need to do some figuring for him." He then asked, "Which fund will this expense come from?"
Jia Qiang said, "We were just discussing that. Grandpa Lai says there's no need to bring money from the capital — the Zhen family in Jiangnan still holds fifty thousand taels of ours. Tomorrow we'll write a letter with a draft and bring it with us. We'll draw thirty thousand first, and leave the remaining twenty thousand deposited with them for the expenses of flower candles, colored lanterns, and all kinds of curtains, hangings, and screens."
Jia Lian nodded. "That's a good plan."
Xifeng hastily said to Jia Qiang, "In that case, I have two capable, reliable men. You can take them along to handle it — that'll save you trouble."
Jia Qiang quickly said with a smile, "I was just about to ask you, aunt, for two people — how convenient!" He asked their names.
Xifeng turned to Old Nurse Zhao. By now the old nurse had been listening so intently she was stunned, and P'ing-erh had to nudge her with a smile before she came to herself. She hurriedly said, "One is Zhao Tianliang, the other is Zhao Tiandong."
Xifeng said, "Don't forget now — I'll be about my business." With that she left.
Jia Rong hurried out to see her off, then whispered to Xifeng, "If my aunt wants anything, just tell me and I'll draw up a list for Qiang to bring along — he'll purchase everything according to the list."
Xifeng laughed. "Don't give me that bullshit! I can barely find places to put my own things — why would I want your sneaky little offerings?" And off she went.
Here Jia Qiang also quietly asked Jia Lian, "Is there anything you want? I'll have it woven and brought as a gift."
Jia Lian smiled. "Don't get carried away. You've barely started learning how to handle affairs, and already you've picked up this little trick. If I need anything, I'll be sure to write and tell you — but let's not discuss that now." With that, he dismissed the two of them.
After that, people kept coming to report on various matters — no fewer than three or four times. Jia Lian was exhausted, so he passed word to the inner gate that nothing more was to be reported — everything would wait until tomorrow. Xifeng didn't come down to rest until the third watch. Nothing else happened that night.
The next morning, Jia Lian rose early, paid his respects to Jia She and Jia Zheng, and then went to the Ning Mansion. He conferred with the senior stewards and several family friends and retained advisers, and together they surveyed the grounds of both mansions to plan the construction of the Imperial Consort's visiting palace. At the same time, they assessed and assigned the workforce. From that day on, craftsmen and laborers of every trade gathered in force. Gold, silver, copper, tin, timber, bricks, and tiles were transported without cease. First, the artisans were ordered to dismantle the walls, towers, and pavilions of the Garden of Concentrated Fragrance in the Ning Mansion, opening a direct passage into the eastern compound of the Rong Mansion. All the rows of servants' quarters on the eastern side of the Rong Mansion had already been torn down. Although the Ning and Rong mansions had always been separated by a narrow lane, that lane was private property and not a public road, so the two estates could be joined. The Garden of Concentrated Fragrance had originally drawn in a stream of living water from the northern corner of the outer wall, so there was no need to bring in a new supply. Though the rocks and trees on the site were not sufficient, Jia She's residence was the old garden of the Rong Mansion, and its bamboo groves, rockeries, pavilions, railings, and such could all be moved over. The two sites were also quite close together, so combining them saved considerable expense; even if the resources fell short, what needed to be added would be limited. The entire planning and construction was entrusted to an old master known as Shan Ziye, who laid out every detail.
Jia Zheng was unaccustomed to worldly affairs and left everything to Jia She, Jia Zhen, Jia Lian, Lai Da, Lai Sheng, Lin Zhixiao, Wu Xindeng, Zhan Guang, and Cheng Xingri, who made the arrangements. For piling up mountains, digging ponds, erecting towers and pavilions, planting bamboos and flowers, and all matters of scenic design, Shan Ziye took charge. On his days off from court, Jia Zheng merely went around to inspect the work, consulting with Jia She on the most important points and then leaving it at that. Jia She simply stayed at home resting; when minor matters arose, Jia Zhen and the others either reported to him directly or submitted written memoranda, and if there was anything to discuss, they summoned Jia Lian, Lai Da, and the rest to receive orders. Jia Rong was solely responsible for overseeing the crafting of gold and silver vessels. Qiang had already set off for Suzhou. Jia Zhen, Lai Da, and the others assigned the workers, opened the registries, and supervised the labor—too much to record in full—but in short, it was a scene of tremendous bustle and excitement. For the moment, let us leave this aside.
Now, Baoyu had lately been greatly pleased that his father, being occupied with this grand project, no longer questioned him about his studies. However, Qin Zhong's illness grew worse with each passing day, and Baoyu was truly anxious, unable to enjoy his respite. That morning, he had just finished washing and dressing and was about to ask Grandmother Jia's permission to visit Qin Zhong, when he noticed Mingyan peeking and ducking behind the screen wall at the second gate. Baoyu hurried out and asked, "What are you doing?"
Mingyan said, "Young Master Qin is dying!"
Baoyu was startled. "I only saw him yesterday—he was perfectly clear-headed. How can he be dying?"
"I don't know myself. His old family servant just came specially to tell me."
Baoyu turned at once and reported this to Grandmother Jia. She instructed, "Send proper attendants with him. Let him go and fulfill the duty of friendship, but he must not stay too long."
Baoyu quickly changed his clothes and came out. The carriage was not yet ready, and he paced anxiously through the hall. When the carriage was finally brought around, he hurried in, followed by Li Gui, Mingyan, and the others. They arrived at Qin Zhong's door, where not a soul was to be seen. They swarmed into the inner chamber, startling Qin Zhong's two distant aunts and several cousins, who scrambled to hide.
By now Qin Zhong had already lost consciousness two or three times and had been moved from the bed to the stretcher long since. The moment Baoyu saw him, he could not help crying out. Li Gui quickly restrained him: "No, no—Young Master Qin is suffering from a wasting illness. The bed has been too hard on his bones, so they moved him down to rest more comfortably. If you carry on like this, won't you only make his condition worse?"
Hearing this, Baoyu forced himself to hold back and stepped closer. Qin Zhong's face was pale as wax; his eyes were closed as he lay breathing on the pillow. Baoyu called out, "Zhongxiong! Baoyu is here." He called two or three times, but Qin Zhong did not respond. Baoyu said again, "Baoyu is here."
Qin Zhong's soul had already left his body, leaving only a faint thread of breath lingering in his chest. He saw many ghostly bailiffs approaching with tablets and ropes to seize him. Qin Zhong's spirit was most unwilling to go. He still worried that no one at home would manage the household affairs, he still thought of the three or four thousand taels of silver his father had left behind, and he still wondered what had become of Zhineng—so he pleaded with the bailiffs in every possible way. But these ghostly bailiffs would not bend the rules for him. Instead they rebuked Qin Zhong: "Have you read books for nothing? Do you not know the saying goes, 'When the King of Hell summons you at the third watch, who dares keep you alive until the fifth?' In the underworld we are all iron-faced and impartial. We are not like the living world, where there is so much consideration for personal feelings and so many obstacles to overcome." Even as this quarrel went on, Qin Zhong's spirit suddenly heard the words "Baoyu is here" and at once pleaded again: "Honored divine messengers, show a little mercy and let me return for a moment—I only wish to exchange a few words with this good friend, and then I shall come back." The ghosts asked: "What good friend is this?" Qin Zhong said: "I will not hide it from you—he is the grandson of Duke Rongguo, Baoyu by his childhood name." When the Chief Judge heard this, he was seized with panic. He immediately cursed the ghostly servants: "I told you to let him go back for a visit, but you stubbornly refused to listen to me. Now we must wait until he produces someone of flourishing fortune and prosperity before we can be done with this." The ghosts, seeing the Chief Judge react in this way, were thrown into confusion. They grumbled: "You were at first so fierce as thunder and hail, and now it turns out you cannot bear to hear the two characters 'Baoyu.' In our humble opinion, they are of the world of light and we are of the world of darkness—what harm can they do to us?" The Chief Judge said: "Nonsense! As the proverb says, 'Officials of the world govern the affairs of the world.' From ancient times the way of men and the way of ghosts has always been the same—there is no difference between the principles of yin and yang. Never mind whether it is yin or yang—letting him return will not be a mistake." When the ghosts heard this, they had no choice but to release Qin Zhong's soul. Qin Zhong uttered a low groan, opened his eyes slightly, and seeing Baoyu at his side, forced himself a final sigh: "Why did you not come sooner? Had you delayed one more step, we would have been unable to meet." Baoyu grasped his hand and wept: "Is there anything you wish to say? Leave me a few words." Qin Zhong said: "There is nothing else. In the past, you and I believed ourselves to be above the rest of the world in understanding. Only today have I realized I was mistaken. From now on you should set your mind on achieving merit and fame, and take honor and distinction as your aim." With these words, he let out a long sigh and passed away.
