Dreaming of Li Bai (Death's Parting Has Swallowed the Cries)

Death has already silenced your voice,

Yet parting in life brings ceaseless grief.

In the miasmic lands of Jiangnan,

You were exiled as a "distant" wanderer—no news since.

An old friend enters my dreams,

Showing that I long remembered you.

I fear this may not be your living soul—

The road is too far, your fate impossible to fathom.

Your soul came amid the green of maple leaves,

Your soul returned through the darkness of frontier passes.

You are now caught in a snare—

How could you possess wings?

The setting moon fills the rafters of my room,

And still I seem to see your face in its light.

The waters are deep, the waves are vast—

Do not let the dragon seize you.
