八月湖水平，涵虛混太清。
氣蒸雲夢澤，波撼一作「動」岳陽城。
欲濟無舟楫，端居恥聖明。
坐觀一作「徒憐」垂釣者一作「叟」，徒有羨魚情。

على بحيرة تينغ تينغ تهدي الوزير تشانغ
في شهر آب، يعتدل ماء البحيرة مع السماء،
محيطاً بالفراغ مختلطاً بصفاء الأفق.
تبخر الأبخرة فوق بحيرة يونغمنغ،
وتموج الأمواج تهزّ مدينة يويانغ.
أريد العبور فلا قارب ولا مجداف،
وأسكن في العزلة فأخجل من عصر الحكم المستنير.
أجلس وأتفرج على الصيّادين،
فليس لديّ سوى حسد على فرحهم بالأسماك.

On the Dongting Lake, to Prime Minister Zhang
In the eighth month the lake is level,
Encompassing the void, merging with the vast sky.
Steam rises over Yunmeng Marsh,
Waves shake the city of Yueyang.
I wish to cross, but have no boat or oars;
In idleness I feel ashamed before this sage age.
I sit and watch the man who holds the rod—
Vainly I nurse the longing for fish.
