Chapter 12
Cao Cao was in the midst of a panicked retreat when a force appeared from the south—Xiahou Dun leading troops to his relief, who fell upon Lü Bu and engaged him in a great battle. They fought until dusk, when torrential rains poured down like a waterfall, and each side withdrew its forces.
Cao Cao returned to his camp and richly rewarded Dian Wei, promoting him to the rank of Commandant of the Imperial Guard.
Meanwhile, Lü Bu returned to his camp and consulted with Chen Gong. Gong said: "In the city of Puyang lives a wealthy man named Tian, with hundreds of servants and retainers—the most prominent household in the entire commandery. Have him secretly send someone to Cao Cao's camp with a letter stating that Lü Wenhou is cruel and unmerciful, that the people's hearts are filled with resentment, and that he now intends to move his troops to Liyang, leaving only Gao Shun in the city. If Cao Cao advances by night, the Tian household will act as inside agents. If Cao Cao comes, we will lure him into the city, set fires at all four gates, and place ambushers outside. Even if Cao Cao possesses the talent to govern heaven and earth, how could he possibly escape?"
Lü Bu followed this plan and secretly instructed the Tian household to send a man directly to Cao Cao's camp. Cao Cao, having just suffered defeat, was in a state of hesitation when word arrived that a man from the Tian household had come, presenting a secret letter that read: "Lü Bu has gone to Liyang; the city is now empty. I earnestly hope you will come quickly, and I will act as your inside agent. A white flag bearing the large character for 'Righteousness' will be raised on the city wall—this shall be the signal."
Cao Cao was overjoyed and said: "Heaven has given me Puyang!" He richly rewarded the messenger and at once made preparations to march his army. Liu Ye said: "Although Lü Bu is no strategist, Chen Gong is full of schemes. I fear there may be treachery within this—we cannot be unprepared. If Your Excellency wishes to go, you should divide your army into three groups: two groups should lie in ambush outside the city as support, and only one group should enter the city."
Cao Cao followed his counsel and divided his army into three groups, arriving at the walls of Puyang. Cao Cao went first to observe and saw banners and flags raised all over the city; at the northwest corner of the wall, there was a white flag bearing the character for "Righteousness." His heart secretly rejoiced. That day, at the hour of noon, the city gates opened and two generals led troops to give battle: Hou Cheng in the vanguard and Gao Shun in the rear. Cao Cao immediately sent Dian Wei forth on horseback to strike directly at Hou Cheng. Hou Cheng could not withstand him and turned his horse to flee back toward the city. Dian Wei pursued him to the edge of the drawbridge, and Gao Shun too could not block him—both retreated into the city. Among the soldiers, a man seized the opportunity to slip through the lines and come before Cao Cao, saying he was a messenger from the Tian household, and presented a secret letter. It read: "Tonight, at the beginning of the first watch, when the city wall sounds the gong as the signal, you may advance your troops. I will surrender the gate."
Cao Cao ordered Xiahou Dun to lead troops on the left and Cao Hong to lead troops on the right, while he himself led Xiahou Yuan, Li Dian, Yue Jin, and Dian Wei—four generals—to lead troops into the city. Li Dian said: "My lord, please remain outside the city and allow us to enter first." Cao Cao shouted: "If I do not go myself, who will be willing to advance?" And so he took the lead and marched straight in.
It was about the first watch, and the moonlight had not yet risen. They heard only the sound of conch shells being blown from the west gate, and suddenly shouting arose. Torches at the gate flickered wildly, the city gate swung wide open, and the drawbridge was lowered. Cao Cao spurred his horse and raced in. He went straight to the prefectural offices, but not a single person was seen along the way. Cao Cao knew this was a trap and hastily turned his horse, shouting: "Retreat!" A bombard was fired from within the prefectural offices, and at all four gates a blazing fire rose to the sky. Gongs and drums sounded in unison, and the shouting was like the overturning of rivers and seas. Zhang Liao emerged from an eastern alley, and Zang Ba emerged from a western alley, attacking from both sides to slaughter the troops. Cao Cao fled toward the north gate, where Hao Meng and Cao Xing appeared from beside the road and attacked him once more. Cao Cao hastened toward the south gate, where Gao Shun and Hou Cheng blocked his way. Dian Wei glared with fury, his teeth clenched, and fought his way out. Gao Shun and Hou Cheng retreated back out of the city.
Dian Wei fought his way to the drawbridge, but looking back he could not see Cao Cao. He turned around and fought back into the city, where at the gate he ran into Li Dian. Dian Wei asked: "Where is our lord?" Li Dian said: "I cannot find him either." Dian Wei said: "You go outside the city to urge on the relief troops—I will go in and search for our lord." Li Dian departed. Dian Wei fought into the city but searched in vain; he fought back out beyond the moat and ran into Yue Jin. Yue Jin asked: "Where is our lord?" Dian Wei said: "I have gone in twice now and cannot find him." Yue Jin said: "Let us go in together and rescue our lord!" The two reached the gate, but from the city wall flaming cannonballs rained down, and Yue Jin's horse could not enter. Dian Wei plunged through the smoke and fire and fought in again, searching everywhere.
Meanwhile, Cao Cao saw Dian Wei fight his way out, but on all sides troops cut off his escape—he could not get out through the south gate. He turned again toward the north gate, and amidst the firelight he came face to face with Lü Bu, spear leveled, galloping toward him on horseback. Cao Cao covered his hand with his face, whipped his horse, and charged straight past. Lü Bu pursued him from behind, rode up, and struck at Cao Cao's helmet with his spear, asking: "Where is Cao Cao?" Cao Cao pointed back and said: "The one on the yellow horse ahead—that is him."
Lü Bu, hearing this, abandoned Cao Cao and galloped forward in pursuit. Cao Cao turned his horse's head and fled toward the east gate, where he met Dian Wei. Dian Wei shielded Cao Cao and cut a bloody path through, reaching the city gate, where the flames were fierce—dry firewood had been pushed down from below, and fire covered the ground everywhere. Dian Wei used his halberd to push the fire aside, and flying through the smoke and flames, he was the first to emerge. Cao Cao followed him out. But just as they reached the gate passage, a burning beam collapsed from the city wall and struck the hindquarters of Cao Cao's war horse, which fell to the ground. Cao Cao used his hands to lift the beam and push it aside—his arms and beard were all burned.
Dian Wei turned his horse around to rescue Cao Cao, and it happened that Xiahou Yuan also arrived. Together they lifted Cao Cao up and broke through the flames. Cao Cao rode Xiahou Yuan's horse, while Dian Wei cut a path through the main road. They fought in a confused melee until daybreak, and only then did Cao Cao return to camp.
His generals prostrated themselves and inquired after his safety. Cao Cao looked up and laughed, "I was fooled by that fellow's scheme—I shall certainly have my revenge!" Guo Jia said, "The plan should be put into action at once." Cao Cao said, "Now we shall turn his own trick against him: we will spread word that I was wounded by the fire and that the fire poison has spread through my body—that I died at the fifth watch. Lü Bu will surely lead his troops to attack. We will conceal our soldiers in Ma Ling Mountain and strike when his forces are halfway across—then Lü Bu can be captured." Guo Jia said, "A truly excellent plan!" Thereupon Cao Cao ordered the soldiers to hang mourning garments and conduct funeral rites, falsely announcing his death.
Soon word reached Yang city and was reported to Lü Bu, saying that Cao Cao had been burned by fire and had died at his camp. Lü Bu immediately mustered his army and rode to Ma Ling Mountain. When he approached Cao Cao's camp, a drum sounded and soldiers rose on every side from their ambush. Lü Bu fought desperately to escape, losing a good many men and horses, and retreated to Yang city, where he held fast behind his walls and would not come out.
That year locusts suddenly appeared and devoured every stalk of grain. Throughout the region east of the passes, a single hu of grain cost fifty strings of cash, and the people devoured one another. Cao Cao, because his army's provisions were exhausted, led his troops back to Juan City for the time being. Lü Bu also led his forces out and encamped in Shan Yang to forage for food. For these reasons both sides suspended hostilities for the time being.
Now, Tao Qian was in Xu Province. He was sixty-three years old when he suddenly fell ill, and his condition grew gravely serious. He summoned Mi Zhu and Chen Deng to discuss matters. Mi Zhu said, "The Cao army withdrew only because Lü Bu attacked Yan Province. Now they have suspended operations on account of the famine, but come spring they will certainly return. You, my lord, have twice wished to yield your position to Liu Xuande. At that time you were still in good health, so Xuande would not accept. Now that your illness is grave, you may entrust it to him face to face, and Xuande will certainly not refuse."
Tao Qian was overjoyed and sent men to Xiao Pei to ask Liu Xuande to discuss military affairs. Xuande brought Guan Yu and Zhang Fei with several dozen horsemen to Xu Province. Tao Qian had them invited into his bedchamber. After Xuande had inquired after his health, Tao Qian said, "I have asked Lord Xuande here for no other reason: it is only because this old man's illness is critical and my days are numbered. I earnestly hope that you, my lord, will take pity on the territories of the House of Han and accept the seals and credentials of Xu Province. Then this old man may die with his eyes closed!" Xuande said, "You have two sons—why not pass it to them?" Tao Qian said, "My eldest son, Shang, and my second son, Ying, both lack the ability for such a task. After my death, I still hope that Lord Xuande will instruct them and never allow them to take charge of provincial affairs." Xuande said, "How could I alone shoulder such a heavy responsibility?" Tao Qian said, "I can recommend one man to assist you: he is a native of Bei Hai, named Sun Qian, style Gongyou. He may be employed as an aide." He also said to Mi Zhu, "Lord Liu is a man of extraordinary talent—you must serve him well."
Xuande continued to decline, but Tao Qian pointed to his heart with his finger and died. After the army had completed its mourning rites, they immediately brought the seals and credentials and presented them to Xuande. Xuande firmly refused. The next day, the people of Xu Province crowded before the prefect's office, weeping and bowing, saying, "If Lord Liu does not take charge of this province, none of us will be able to live in peace!" Lords Guan and Zhang also urged him repeatedly. Xuande then agreed to take temporary charge of the affairs of Xu Province. He appointed Sun Qian and Mi Zhu as assistants, Chen Deng as a secretary; he brought all the troops from Xiao Pei into the city, posted notices to reassure the people, and at the same time arranged the funeral. Xuande and all the officers and men, great and small, donned mourning garments and held a grand memorial ceremony. When the rites were completed, Tao Qian was buried on the plains of the Yellow River. Xuande memorialized the court regarding Tao Qian's final testament.
Cao Cao, while in Juan City, learned that Tao Qian had died and that Liu Xuande was now Governor of Xu Province. He flew into a rage, saying, "My vengeance is yet unpaid, and you, without loosing a single arrow, have sat down in possession of Xu Province! I shall kill Liu Bei first, and then I shall hack Tao Qian's corpse to pieces to avenge my father!" He immediately issued orders to set forth on a given day to attack Xu Province. Xun Yu entered and remonstrated, "In former times, the Founder of the Han, Gaozu, held the region within the passes, and the Restorer, Guangwu, took He Nei. Both struck deep roots and secured their foundations in order to set the realm to rights. Advancing, they were sufficient to overcome the enemy; retreating, they were sufficient to hold fast. Therefore, though they met with hardship, in the end they accomplished their great enterprise. You, my lord, first raised your standard in Yan Province, and the Yellow and Ji Rivers are the strategic points of the empire—this is the equivalent of the old regions within the passes and He Nei. Now if you take Xu Province, leaving too many troops will leave you short of men, and leaving too few will allow Lü Bu to raid our territory unguarded—and then we will have lost Yan Province. If Xu Province is not taken, where will you, my lord, find refuge? Now although Tao Qian is dead, Liu Bei already holds it. The people of Xu Province have submitted to Xuande and will surely fight to the death to support him. For you, my lord, to abandon Yan Province and seize Xu Province is to abandon the great for the small, to forsake the root and pursue the branch, to exchange security for danger—I hope you will consider this carefully." Cao Cao said, "This year there is famine and a shortage of provisions. For our soldiers to sit and wait here is no good plan." Yu said, "It would be better to move east and take the lands of Chen, so that the army may find provisions there. In Ru Nan and Ying Chuan, the Yellow Turban remnants He Yi, Huang Shao, and others have been plundering the provinces and command considerable gold, silk, and grain. These bandits can be easily defeated. Once we have beaten them and seized their supplies to feed the three armies, the court will be pleased and the people will rejoice—this would be an act in accord with Heaven's will."
Cao Cao was delighted and followed his counsel. He left Xiahou Dun and Cao Ren to defend Juan City and other points, while he himself led his troops to take the lands of Chen, and then advanced to Ru and Ying. The Yellow Turban leaders He Yi and Huang Shao, learning that Cao's army was approaching, led their forces to meet him, and they joined battle at Yang Mountain. Although the rebel troops were numerous, they were nothing but a pack of foxes and curs, with no formation or ranks. Cao Cao ordered strong bows and crossbows to hold them, and sent Dian Wei forth to engage. He Yi ordered his deputy commander to go out to fight, but in less than three bouts Dian Wei pierced him with a halberd and brought him down from his horse. Cao Cao led his forces in a charge and pursued the enemy past Yang Mountain, where he made camp.
The next day, Huang Shao led his own army forward. When the battle lines were drawn, a single general came out on foot, wearing a yellow turban on his head and clad in a green padded jacket, carrying an iron staff in his hand. He shouted, "I am He Man, the Demon Who Intercepts Heaven! Who dares to fight me?" Cao Hong saw him, let out a great roar, leaped from his horse, and strode forward with his saber. The two met before the battle lines and fought for forty or fifty bouts with neither side gaining the upper hand. Cao Hong feigned defeat and fled. He Man gave chase. Hong used the tactic of the dragging saber and back-slash, turned, leaped, and cut He Man down, then struck again and killed him. Li Dian seized the moment and rode straight into the enemy formation. Huang Shao was caught off guard and was taken alive by Li Dian. Cao Hong's soldiers cut down the enemy troops and seized an incalculable amount of gold, silk, grain, and provisions. He Yi, now isolated, fled with several hundred riders toward Gebei. As they traveled, a force burst out from behind the hills. At their head was a stalwart warrior, eight feet tall and ten spans around the waist, wielding a great saber, blocking their path. He Yi leveled his spear and rode out to meet him, but in a single bout the warrior seized him alive. The rest of the men, in a panic, all dismounted and surrendered, and the warrior drove them all into the Gebei fortress.
Now Dian Wei had pursued He Yi to Gebei, and the stalwart warrior led his men to meet him. Dian Wei said, "Are you also one of the Yellow Turban rebels?" The warrior replied, "Several hundred Yellow Turban riders are all imprisoned by me inside the fortress!" Dian Wei said, "Why don't you hand them over?" The warrior said, "If you can defeat the saber in my hand, I will hand them over!" Dian Wei flew into a rage and leveled his twin halberds to attack. The two fought from the hour of the Dragon to the hour of the Horse with neither prevailing, and each rested briefly. Before long, the warrior came out again to challenge, and Dian Wei went out as well. They fought straight through until dusk, when both sides called a halt because their horses were spent. Dian Wei's soldiers galloped back to report to Cao Cao. Cao was alarmed and hastily led his officers to observe.
The next day, the warrior again came out to challenge. Cao Cao saw that the man carried himself with a commanding presence and was secretly pleased. He instructed Dian Wei to feign defeat that day. Dian Wei received the order and rode out to fight. After thirty bouts, he fled back to his formation. The warrior pursued him to the formation gate, where archers and crossbowmen drove him back. Cao Cao hastily withdrew his army five miles and secretly had men dig a concealed pitfall, with hook-wielding soldiers lying in ambush. The next day, he again ordered Dian Wei to lead over a hundred riders out. The warrior laughed and said, "What does a defeated general dare to come back for?" He then rode out to meet the fight. Dian Wei fought a few bouts, then turned his horse and fled. The warrior, intent only on pursuing, took no precautions, and horse and rider both fell into the pit. The hook-wielding soldiers bound him and brought him before Cao Cao. Cao descended from his tent, dismissed the soldiers with a sharp command, personally untied his bonds, hastily brought him clothes to wear, and bade him sit, then asked his hometown and name.
The warrior said, "I am from Qiao County in the kingdom of Qiao. My surname is Xu, my given name is Chu, and my style name is Zhongkang. When bandits first arose, I gathered several hundred members of my clan and built a sturdy fortress to defend against them. One day the bandits came, and I ordered my men to gather many stones. I personally hurled stones at them, and not one missed, so the bandits retreated. Another day the bandits came again, and the fortress had no grain, so I made a pact with the rebels to exchange farm cattle for rice. When the rice had been delivered, the rebels drove the cattle outside the fortress, but the cattle all ran back. I seized two bullocks by the tail and walked backward over a hundred paces. The rebels were terrified and dared not take the cattle, and so they left. That is why I have kept this place safe." Cao Cao said, "I have long heard your great name. Will you submit to me?" Xu Chu said, "That is my wish." He then brought over several hundred members of his clan, all of whom surrendered. Cao Cao appointed Xu Chu as Commandant of Cavalry and rewarded him richly. He then had He Yi and Huang Shao executed. Runan and Yingchuan were completely pacified.
Cao Cao led his army home. Cao Ren and Xiahou Dun came to meet him and reported that spies had recently reported that the soldiers of Xue Lan and Li Feng in Yanzhou were all out plundering, leaving the cities and towns empty. A victorious army could be sent to attack them, and they would fall with a single effort. Cao Cao accordingly led his army straight to Yanzhou. Xue Lan and Li Feng, taken by surprise, had no choice but to lead their troops out to meet him. Xu Chu said, "I wish to capture these two men as a gift of introduction." Cao Cao was greatly pleased and ordered him to go out to battle. Li Feng wielded a painted halberd and rode out to meet him. After two bouts, Xu Chu cut Li Feng down from his horse. Xue Lan tried to flee back to his formation, but Li Dian blocked him at the drawbridge. Xue Lan dared not return to the city and led his army toward Juye instead. But Lü Qian came galloping up and shot him with an arrow from his horse, and his army scattered in all directions.
Cao Cao recovered Yanzhou, and Cheng Yu then advised advancing to take Puyang. Cao Cao ordered Xu Chu and Dian Wei to serve as vanguard, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan as the left army, Li Dian and Yue Jin as the right army, with Cao Cao himself leading the main army, and Yu Jin and Lü Qian as the rearguard. When the army reached Puyang, Lu Bu wished to go out to meet them himself, but Chen Gong remonstrated, "You must not go out to battle. We must wait for our officers to assemble first." Lu Bu said, "Whom do I fear?" He would not listen to Chen Gong's words, led his army out to the battle lines, leveled his halberd, and cursed loudly. Xu Chu went out to meet him. They fought twenty bouts with neither side prevailing. Cao Cao said, "Lu Bu cannot be defeated by one man alone." He then sent Dian Wei to assist, and the two generals attacked together. From the left came Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan; from the right came Li Dian and Yue Jin. Six generals attacked Lu Bu all at once. Lu Bu could not fend them all off and turned his horse to flee back to the city. The Tian family, on the city wall, saw Lu Bu retreating in defeat and hastily had the drawbridge raised. Lu Bu shouted, "Open the gates!" The Tian family said, "We have already surrendered to General Cao."
Lu Bu cursed furiously and led his army toward Dingtao. Chen Gong hastily opened the east gate to protect Lu Bu's family as they left the city. Cao Cao thus gained Puyang and pardoned the Tian family for their past offenses. Liu Ye said, "Lu Bu is a fierce tiger. Though he is in difficulty today, he must not be given any respite." Cao Cao ordered Liu Ye and others to hold Puyang while he himself led his army in pursuit to Dingtao. At that time, Lu Bu, Zhang Miao, and Zhang Chao were all in the city, while Gao Shun, Zhang Liao, Zang Ba, and Hou Cheng had gone to the coast to forage for grain and had not yet returned. Cao Cao's army reached Dingtao and did not fight for several days, then withdrew forty miles and made camp. It happened that the wheat in Jijun was ripe, and Cao Cao ordered his army to cut the wheat for food. Spies reported this to Lu Bu, and he led his army in pursuit. As he approached Cao Cao's camp, he saw a vast stretch of dense forest on the left and, fearing an ambush, turned back.
When Cao Cao learned that Lü Bu's army had withdrawn, he said to his generals: "Lü Bu suspects there are ambushes in the woods. We can plant many banners in the trees to strengthen that suspicion. West of the camp, there is a long dike with no water—we can conceal our best troops there entirely. Tomorrow Lü Bu will surely come to burn the woods. The troops in the dike will cut off his retreat, and Lü Bu can be captured." He therefore left only fifty drummers in the camp to beat the drums, and had the men and women captured from the village shout and cry out within the camp. The bulk of his elite troops were concealed in the dike.
Now, Lü Bu returned and reported to Chen Gong. Chen Gong said: "Cao Cao is full of treacherous schemes—we must not underestimate the enemy." Lü Bu said: "I will use fire to attack; that will defeat any ambush." He left Chen Gong and Gao Shun to defend the city, and the next day led his great army forward. From afar he saw banners in the woods and drove his troops ahead in force, setting fires in all directions—but not a single man was there. He was about to advance on the camp when he heard the drums beating loudly. Just as he was filled with doubt and uncertainty, suddenly a force of soldiers emerged from behind the camp. Lü Bu spurred his horse in pursuit. At the sound of a cannon, the concealed troops in the dike poured out: Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Xu Chu, Dian Wei, Li Dian, and Yue Jin charged forth on horseback. Lü Bu could not withstand them and fled in rout. His lieutenant Cheng Lian was shot dead by an arrow from Yue Jin. Of Lü Bu's army, two parts in three were lost. The defeated soldiers returned and reported to Chen Gong. Chen Gong said: "An empty city is hard to defend—we had better leave at once." He and Gao Shun then escorted Lü Bu's family and abandoned Dingtao. Cao Cao led his victorious troops into the city, sweeping all before them like a knife through bamboo. Zhang Chao immolated himself, and Zhang Miao fled to Yuan Shou. The entire region of Shandong fell into Cao Cao's hands. He pacified the people and rebuilt the cities—but of this, no more need be said.
Now, as Lü Bu fled, he encountered his generals returning one by one. Chen Gong had also found them. Lü Bu said: "Though our army is small, we can still defeat Cao Cao." He therefore led his troops forward once more. Indeed:
Victory and defeat are ever the way of war;
To roll up one's armor and return—who can say what may come?
What became of Lü Bu's fortunes, whether victory or defeat, listen to the explanation in the chapter below.
