I sit in silence, lost in thought and fear.

A cold lamp stirs memories of days gone by,

A lone wild goose startles my fretful sigh.

Far dreams of home linger past dawn's first light,

Letters from loved ones arrive a year too late.

The Xiang River glimmers with mist and moon so bright,

At my gate a fishing boat is moored for the night.
