Below Mount Beigu

My journey lies beyond the green hills; my boat moves on ahead of the emerald tide.

The rising water makes the banks stretch wide; a fair breeze fills a single sail.

The sun is born from the dying night; spring enters the river in the old year's time.

Where shall I send my letter home? To Luoyang, by the wild geese returning.

[Note: In the *Collection of the Finest Spirits of Rivers and Peaks*, this poem is titled *Intentions in the South*. It reads:

The southern lands hold many new delights; I travel east to greet the early sky.

The rising tide erases both banks; a fair breeze fills several sails.

The sun is born from the dying night; spring enters the river in the old year's time.

All through my life I have observed the signs of heaven, yet only here have I felt them so keenly.]
