魯智深忿怒,全無清淨之心;
這個何曾尊佛道,只於月黑殺人;
這個向靈山會上,惱如來懶坐蓮臺;

Chapter 115
It was at this moment that Song Jiang and Dai Zong were burning paper offerings and pouring libations on Xiling Bridge in memory of Zhang Shun. Word had already reached Fang Tianding, who dispatched ten leading officers in two columns to capture Song Jiang and sallied forth from the city. From the southern hills came five generals—Wu Zhi, Zhao Yi, Chao Zhong, Yuan Xing, and Su Jing; from the northern road also came five leading officers—Wen Kerang, Cui Yu, Lian Ming, Mao Di, and Tang Fengshi. Ten leading officers in all, north and south, each commanding three thousand horsemen, opened the city gates in the depths of night and advanced with soldiers from both directions simultaneously, rushing out to attack.
While Song Jiang and Dai Zong were pouring libations and burning paper, a great uproar erupted from below the bridge. On the left stood Fan Rui and Ma Lin; on the right, Shi Xiu—each commanding five thousand men in ambush. Hearing the fires blaze ahead, they at once also set their own fires alight. The two columns separated and gave chase, striking down the soldiers from both northern and southern hills. The southern troops, seeing that the enemy was prepared, hastened to retrace their path, with Song soldiers in pursuit on both sides. Wen Kerang led his four fellow officers in a desperate attempt to cross the river back to the city when, quite unexpectedly, from behind Baoshuta Hill burst Ruan Xiao'er, Ruan Xiao Wu, and Meng Kang, leading five thousand soldiers who cut off their retreat. They captured Mao Di alive and pierced Tang Fengshi to death with a hail of spears.
On the southern front, Wu Zhi likewise led his four fellow officers in pursuit of the Song soldiers, but when they hurriedly fell back, they ran straight into Li Kui, Bao Xu, Xiang Cong, and Li Gun at Dingxiang Bridge, who emerged with five hundred infantrymen. The two shield-bearers charged straight at them, brandishing their savage shields and unsheathing their flying blades. They cut down Yuan Xing at once; Bao Xu's saber felled Su Jing; Li Kui's axe split Zhao Yi apart. The greater part of the soldiers were driven down into the lake and drowned. By the time reinforcements arrived from the city, Song Jiang's troops had already withdrawn into the mountains. They all assembled at Lingyin Temple, where each reported his exploits and received his reward. From the two columns they captured over five hundred fine horses.
Song Jiang gave orders to leave Shi Xiu, Fan Rui, and Ma Lin to assist Li Jun and others in jointly managing the West Lake mountain camp and preparing to assault the city. Song Jiang himself returned only with Dai Zong, Li Kui, and others to Gaoting Mountain stronghold. Wu Yong and the others received them and ushered them into the central army tent to be seated. Song Jiang said to the chief strategist: "By employing this stratagem of mine, I have obtained the heads of four of his generals and captured Mao Di alive. I shall send him to Marshal Zhang's army for execution."
In the camp, Song Jiang knew nothing of the situation at Dusong Pass and Deqing, so he sent Dai Zong to scout and return with urgent news. After several days, Dai Zong came back to the camp, reported to the vanguard commander, and told him that Commander Lu had already passed Dusong Pass and would arrive soon. Song Jiang received this news with mingled joy and sorrow, and asked about the troops and officers. Dai Zong replied, "I know every detail of the fighting there, and I have the official dispatch here. Commander, please do not distress yourself." Song Jiang said, "Have we lost more of my brothers? Do not hide anything from me—tell me the truth." Dai Zong said, "Since Commander Lu went to take Dusong Pass, the pass is flanked by high mountains with only a single road between them. On the mountains stands the pass fortress, and beside the pass is a grove of great trees, scores of feet tall, from which one can see in every direction; below them grow dense thickets of pine. Three rebel generals held the pass: the chief was Wu Sheng, the second was Yin Yin, and the third was Wei Heng. At first they came down from the pass day after day to fight Lin Chong, but Lin Chong pierced Yin Yin with his serpent spear, and Wu Sheng dared not come down again, remaining on the pass to defend it. Later, Li Tianrun led four generals to reinforce the pass: Li Dayou, Zhang Jian, Zhang Tao, and Yao Yi. The next day they came down to fight. The rebel general Li Dayou rode out first and engaged Lü Fang; after some fifty or sixty exchanges, Lü Fang pierced Li Dayou with his halberd and killed him. The rebel soldiers withdrew to the pass and did not come down again. For several days they waited below the pass. Commander Lu, seeing how rugged the mountain terrain was, sent Ou Peng, Deng Fei, Li Zhong, and Zhou Tong up the mountain to scout a route. They did not anticipate that Li Tianrun, seeking to avenge his brother, would lead the rebel soldiers charging down from the pass. With the first stroke of his sword he cut down Zhou Tong. Li Zhong... fled wounded; had the rescue come any later, all would have been lost. The three officers were rescued and brought back to camp. The next day, Dong Ping, the "Double-Spear General," was so restless with rage that he wanted to avenge the dead. He rode up to the pass and hurled insults at the rebel generals, but did not expect a cannon to be fired from above. The blast struck Dong Ping's left arm, and when he returned to camp he could no longer wield his spear; his arm was bound with splints. The next day he was determined to have his revenge, but Commander Lu restrained him and he did not go. After one night, his arm seemed to have healed, and without telling Commander Lu, he conferred with Zhang Qing. The two of them, without mounting horses, went up toward the pass on foot. From the pass came Li Tianrun and Zhang Tao to meet them in battle. Dong Ping wanted to capture Li Tianrun and fought on foot with his spear. Li Tianrun also came with a long spear, and they fought some ten exchanges. Dong Ping's heart was set on the fight, but his left hand would not respond as he wielded his spear, and he had to fall back. Li Tianrun pursued him down from the pass. Zhang Qing then leveled his spear to stab Li Tianrun, but Li Tianrun dodged behind a pine tree, and Zhang Qing's spear struck the trunk. When he tried to pull it free, it was stuck fast and would not come loose. Li Tianrun thrust back with his spear and struck Zhang Qing squarely in the belly, piercing him to the ground. Dong Ping, seeing Zhang Qing speared down, rushed in with both spears to fight, but did not expect Zhang Tao to come at him from behind and cut him in two at the waist. When Commander Lu learned of this, he rushed to the rescue, but the soldiers had already withdrawn to the pass, and from below there was nothing he could do. Then Sun Xin and his wife Gu Dasao, disguised as refugees fleeing hardship, went into the mountains and found a narrow path. They led Li Li, Tang Long, Shi Qian, and Bai Sheng along this path up to the pass. In the middle of the night they crept up onto the pass and set a fire. The rebel generals, seeing flames on the pass, knew that Song soldiers had already gotten through, and they abandoned the fortress and fled. When Commander Lu reached the pass and mustered his troops, Sun Xin and Gu Dasao had captured the original pass commander Wu Sheng alive; Li Li and Tang Long had captured the original pass commander Yin Yin alive; Shi Qian and Bai Sheng had captured the original pass commander Wei Heng alive. All three were sent under escort to Commander Zhang the Pacification Commissioner. The remains of Dong Ping, Zhang Qing, and Zhou Tong were gathered and buried at the pass.
Commander Lu pursued the rebels for forty-five li beyond the pass and overtook them. He fought Li Tianrun and after some thirty-odd exchanges killed him. Only Zhang Jian, Zhang Tao, and Yao Yi remained, leading the remnants of the defeated army. They could barely hold their ground and withdrew whenever they had the chance. They would arrive any day now. "If you do not believe me, Commander, read the official dispatch." Song Jiang read the dispatch, and sorrow welled up in his heart; his tears flowed like a spring.
Wu Yong said, "Since General Lu has won his victory, we can dispatch our officers and men to attack from both sides. The southern troops will surely be defeated, and we can then go to support Huyan Zhe's force at Huzhou." Song Jiang replied, "Most excellent advice!" He then ordered Li Kui, Bao Xu, Xiang Chong, and Li Gun to lead three thousand foot soldiers along the mountain path to join the fight. The Black Whirlwind set off with the soldiers, overjoyed and elated.
Meanwhile, Song Jiang's army attacked the East Gate. Zhu Tong and the other officers, with the five thousand cavalry and infantry originally assigned to them, advanced from Tangzhen along the road through the villages, rushing to the Caishi Gate outside to attack the East Gate. Along the eastern road by the river were all residential villages and roadside inns, surpassing even the city itself—a vast expanse of farmland and fields. When they reached the city walls, they drew up their troops in formation. Lu Zhishen was the first to enter the fray, advancing on foot to challenge the enemy. He brandished his iron staff and strode up to the foot of the walls, shouting, "You wretched southern devils, come out and fight!" Those on the walls, seeing that it was a monk who was challenging them, hastily reported this to the Crown Prince's palace.
The State Preceptor Baoguang—Deng Yuanchue—upon hearing that a monk was challenging them, rose and addressed the Crown Prince, saying, "Your servant has heard that among the Liangshan outlaws there is a monk named Lu Zhishen, who habitually wields an iron staff. I humbly ask Your Highness to go to the East Gate tower and watch your servant engage him in a few bouts of hand-to-hand combat." Fang Tianding was greatly pleased upon hearing this. He issued orders and led eight fierce generals, together with Marshal Shi Bao, to the Caishi Gate tower to watch the State Preceptor meet the enemy.
Fang Tianding and Shi Bao took their seats in the watchtower, with the eight generals clustered on either side. As they watched the State Preceptor prepare for battle, they beheld the monk Baoguang thus attired:
He wore a flaming scarlet monk's robe,
Tied with a round sash plaited from tiger sinew,
Hung with a string of seven-jeweled prayer beads,
And shod in a pair of nine-ringed deerskin monk's shoes.
Beneath, a heart-guard of gold-wire and beast-pattern,
And in both hands, a gleaming iron staff of solid steel.
Then the city gate was opened and the drawbridge lowered. The State Preceptor Deng Yuanchue led five hundred swordsmen and foot soldiers charging forth. When Lu Zhishen saw them, he said, "So the southern army also sends out bald devils! This monk will make him eat a hundred blows of my staff!" Without exchanging words, he raised his staff and rushed forward. The State Preceptor Baoguang also came to meet him with his staff. Both wielded their iron staves at once. Behold:
Lu Zhishen, in his fury, had no trace of a tranquil heart;
Deng Yuanchue, in his wrath, harbored no thought of mercy.
This one had never honored the Way of Buddha—he only killed men on moonless nights;
That one could never read the scriptures—he only wanted to set fires when the wind was high.
This one, at the assembly on Spirit Mountain, vexed the Tathagata into leaving his lotus throne;
That one, before the Hall of Good Dharma, would command the guardian deity to return his golden pestle.
One had never in his life performed Emperor Wu's repentance;
The other had never in his life known the Patriarch's Zen.
This Lu Zhishen and the State Preceptor Baoguang fought over fifty bouts with neither gaining the advantage. Fang Tianding, watching from the watchtower, said to Shi Bao, "I had only heard that among the Liangshan outlaws there was a 'Flowery Monk' named Lu Zhishen—I never expected him to be so formidable! His reputation is well deserved! After all this fighting, he hasn't yielded the slightest advantage to the Preceptor." Shi Bao replied, "This officer too has been watching in amazement—I have never seen such a matched pair of adversaries!"
Even as they spoke, a horseman came galloping with a report: "At the North Gate, more troops have arrived beneath the walls." Shi Bao hastily rose and departed.
Meanwhile, among the Song troops below the walls, Wu Song the Pilgrim saw that Lu Zhishen could not overcome Baoguang. Fearing some mishap, his heart grew anxious. He brandished his twin monk's swords and flew out of formation, charging straight for Baoguang. Baoguang, seeing two men attacking him together, dragged his staff and fled back toward the city. Wu Song gave chase with fierce courage when suddenly a fierce general burst forth from the city gate—Bei Yingkui, one of Fang Tianding's officers. He leveled his spear, spurred his horse forward, and engaged Wu Song in combat. The two met squarely on the drawbridge. Wu Song dodged aside, threw aside his swords, seized Bei Yingkui's spear shaft, and with a single tug dragged both the man and his weapon from his horse. With a chopping blow, he lopped off Bei Yingkui's head. Lu Zhishen came up in support and they withdrew. Fang Tianding hastily ordered the drawbridge raised and his troops pulled back into the city. Zhu Tong here also ordered his troops to withdraw ten li and make camp, and sent men to report the victory to Vanguard Commander Song Jiang.
That same day, Song Jiang led his army to challenge the North Gate. Shi Bao mounted his horse with his meteor hammer at hand, his Wind-Cleaving Saber held horizontally across his body. He opened the gate and rode out to meet the enemy. From the Song army ranks, Guan Shuang the "Great Saber" rode forth to engage Shi Bao. After they had fought some twenty bouts, Shi Bao turned his horse and fled. Guan Shuang reined in his horse sharply and returned to his own formation. Song Jiang asked, "Why did you not pursue?" Guan Shao replied, "Shi Bao's saber technique is no inferior to mine. Though he turned his horse, he certainly has a scheme in mind." Wu Yong said, "Duan Kai once told us that this man habitually uses a meteor hammer. When he turns his horse, he feigns defeat to lure the enemy deep into his territory." Song Jiang said, "If we pursue, we will surely fall into his trap. Let us withdraw our men to camp. Meanwhile, send someone to reward Wu Song."
Meanwhile, Li Kui and his men, leading the infantry to reinforce Lu Junyi, entered the mountain road and collided with Zhang Jian's defeated forces. They joined in a fierce charge, killing Yao Yi in the midst of the chaos. Zhang Jian and Zhang Tao fled back toward the pass along the road, where they ran straight into Lu Junyi. After a fierce battle, they fled into the mountain paths. Pursued closely, they had no choice but to abandon their horses and flee down the mountain to save their lives. Unexpectedly, two men emerged from the thick bamboo, each wielding a steel fork. Caught off guard, Zhang Jian and Zhang Tao were struck down and captured, then carried down the mountain. The ones who had captured them were Jie Zhen and Jie Bao. When Lu Junyi saw them arrive with the two prisoners, he was overjoyed. He joined forces with Li Kui and the others, and together with all the generals, they went to the main camp at Gaoting Mountain to pay their respects to Song Jiang and the rest. They recounted the loss of Dong Ping, Zhang Qing, and Zhou Tong, and all were deeply grieved. The generals all came to pay homage to Song Jiang, and the combined forces made camp together. The next day, they had Zhang Jian sent to Zhang Zhaotao's camp in Suzhou, where he was beheaded as a warning to all. Zhang Tao was cut open and his heart removed before the camp, offered in sacrifice from afar to Dong Ping, Zhang Qing, and Zhou Tong.
Song Jiang and Wu Yong discussed the situation. "Please lead your own men, Lu Junyi, to reinforce Hu Yanzhu and his forces on the road to Deqing County, and bring them here so we can combine our strength to take the city." Lu Junyi received the order, mustered his troops, and set out by way of Fengkou Town. Along the way, they encountered Si Xingfang's retreating remnants. Lu Junyi engaged them and fought a fierce battle. Si Xingfang fell into the water and drowned, while the rest scattered and fled. Hu Yanzhu paid his respects to Lu Junyi, and their combined forces returned to the main camp at Gaoting Mountain, where they reported to Song Jiang and the others. The generals gathered to confer. Song Jiang saw that both columns had now reached Hangzhou, and that Xuanzhou, Huzhou, and Dusong Pass were all under Zhang Zhaotao's command, with his staff officers and commanders dispatched to pacify and protect the people in each region—but that is another matter.
Song Jiang noticed that Lei Heng and Gong Wang were missing from Hu Yanzhu's forces. Hu Yanzhu reported: "Lei Heng engaged Si Xingfang in combat outside the South Gate of Deqing County. After thirty exchanges, Si Xingfang cut him down from his horse. Gong Wang, while pursuing Huang Ai, crossed a stream with his horse, fell into the water, and was stabbed to death by the Southern army's spearmen. Mi Quan was killed with a single axe stroke by Suo Chao. Huang Ai and Xu Bai were captured alive by our generals. Si Xingfang was driven into the water and drowned. Xue Dounan fled amid the chaos, and his whereabouts are unknown." Upon hearing that he had lost two more brothers, Lei Heng and Gong Wang, Song Jiang wept like rain. He said to his generals: "When Zhang Shun appeared to me in a dream the other day, I saw three or four figures in bloodstained clothes standing to my right—the spirits of Dong Ping, Zhang Qing, Zhou Tong, Lei Heng, and Gong Wang. Once I have taken Hangzhou and Ninghai Commandery, I will engage monks to perform grand offerings and meritorious rites to deliver the souls of our fallen brothers." Huang Ai and Xu Bai were sent to Zhang Zhaotao's camp and beheaded—but that is another matter.
That day, Song Jiang ordered cattle and horses slaughtered to feast the troops. The next day, he and Wu Yong finalized their plan and assigned the generals and their subordinates to attack Hangzhou.
Vice-Commander Lu Junyi, leading twelve generals and their subordinates, was to assault the Back Tide Gate:
Lin Chong, Hu Yanzhu, Liu Tang, Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, Shan Tinggui, Wei Dingguo, Chen Da, Yang Chun, Du Qian, Li Yun, and Shi Yong.
Hua Rong and fourteen generals and their subordinates were to assault the Gen Mountain Gate:
Hua Rong, Qin Ming, Zhu Wu, Huang Xin, Sun Li, Li Zhong, Zou Yuan, Zou Run, Li Li, Bai Sheng, Tang Long, Mu Chun, Zhu Gui, and Zhu Fu.
Mu Hong and eleven generals and their subordinates were sent to the Western Mountain Camp to assist Li Jun and the others in assaulting the Lakeside Gate:
Li Jun, Ruan Xiaoer, Ruan Xiaowu, Meng Kang, Shi Xiu, Fan Rui, Ma Lin, Mu Hong, Yang Xiong, Xue Yong, and Ding Desun.
Sun Xin and eight generals and their subordinates were sent to the Eastern Gate Camp to assist Zhu Tong in assaulting the Vegetable Market Gate, Recommended Bridge Gate, and others:
Zhu Tong, Shi Jin, Lu Zhishen, Wu Song, Sun Xin, Gu Dasao, Zhang Qing, and Sun Erniang.
Eight subordinate generals were recalled from the Eastern Gate Camp, together with Li Ying and others, to oversee reconnaissance for all camps and provide support where needed:
Li Ying, Kong Ming, Yang Lin, Du Xing, Tong Wei, Tong Meng, Wang Ying, and Hu Sanniang.
Commander-in-Chief Song Jiang, leading twenty-one generals and their subordinates, was to assault the main road to the Northern Gate:
Wu Yong, Guan Sheng, Suo Chao, Dai Zong, Li Kui, Lü Fang, Guo Sheng, Ou Peng, Deng Fei, Yan Shun, Ling Zhen, Bao Xu, Xiang Cong, Li Gun, Song Qing, Pei Xuan, Jiang Jing, Cai Fu, Cai Qing, Shi Qiu, and Yu Baosi.
Song Jiang then deployed his generals to attack the four city gates.
Song Jiang led his main force straight to the North Gate to provoke battle. From the city walls came the clanging of gongs. The gate was thrown wide open, the drawbridge lowered, and Shi Bao rode out first to give battle. From the ranks of the Song army, "The Urgent Vanguard" Su Chao—a man impatient by nature—wielded his great battle-axe, exchanged no words, and charged forth at once to engage Shi Bao. The two horses met; the two commanders clashed fiercely. Before ten exchanges had passed, Shi Bao feigned an opening and turned his horse to flee. Su Chao gave chase. Guan Sheng shouted at him to stop, but it was too late—a mace struck Su Chao full in the face, knocking him from his horse. Deng Fei rushed to his aid, but Shi Bao arrived before him. Deng Fei was caught off guard and was hewn in two by Shi Bao's blade. The Preceptor Baoguang, within the city, led several fierce generals in a sally. The Song troops were routed and fled northward. They were saved only by Hua Rong and Qin Ming, who came charging in from the flank, drove back the Southern troops, and rescued Song Jiang back to camp. Shi Bao, elated at his victory, returned to the city in high spirits.
Song Jiang and the others returned to their great camp at Gaoting Mountain, sat in the command tent, and mourned the loss of two more generals, Su Chao and Deng Fei. His heart was heavy with grief. Wu Yong counseled him: "With such fierce commanders in the city, we must use cunning to take it—we cannot meet them head-on." Song Jiang said, "Having lost men and officers like this, what stratagem can we use to capture it?" Wu Yong replied: "When the vanguard has coordinated all the gates, lead your troops again to attack the North Gate. The soldiers inside will surely come out to meet you. We will then feign defeat and retreat, luring the enemy troops far from the city walls. We will fire a cannon as the signal, and all the gates will attack the city simultaneously. Once our troops have entered through any one gate, they will set fires as the signal. The enemy soldiers will be unable to aid one another, and a great victory will be ours." Song Jiang then ordered Dai Zong to carry the command to all units. The next day, he ordered Guan Sheng to lead a large force to the North Gate to provoke battle. Drums sounded from the walls; Shi Bao led his troops out of the city and engaged Guan Sheng. After fewer than ten exchanges, Guan Sheng hastily retreated. Shi Bao's troops gave chase, and Lingzhen fired the cannon. At the signal, all the gates raised a great shout and attacked the city together. Now the deputy vanguard Lu Junyi led Lin Chong and others to assault the Tide-Watching Gate. When their troops reached the city, they found the gate standing open, the bridge down. Liu Tang, eager to win first glory, charged alone on horseback, sword in hand, straight into the city. From the walls they saw Liu Tang galloping in. With a single stroke of an axe, they cut the ropes and dropped the portcullis. The fierce and courageous Liu Tang, horse and man alike, perished beneath the gate. The city of Hangzhou had been the capital founded by Qian Wang, who had constructed three layers of gates: outside, a portcullis; in the middle, two great iron-leaf doors; and within, a barrier of wooden palisades. Liu Tang had charged to the gate, and the portcullis had already been lowered from above. Soldiers lay in ambush on both sides as well—how could Liu Tang have survived? Lin Chong and Huyan Zhuo, seeing that Liu Tang had fallen, led their troops back to camp and reported to Lu Junyi. None of the gates could be entered. They had no choice but to withdraw and send a swift messenger to report to Song Jiang's main camp. When Song Jiang heard that Liu Tang too had been lost, crushed to death beneath the gate at Tide-Watching Gate, he wept bitterly: "This brother has died a wrongful death! Since we swore brotherhood in Yuncheng County, he followed the Chao Tianwang to Liangshan Marsh. He endured years of hardship and knew no joy. Through a hundred battles and more, facing death a hundred times and surviving once, he never lost his fighting spirit. Who would have thought he would meet his end here today?" The Military Adviser Wu Yong said: "This was no sound plan. The stratagem has failed, and it cost us a brother's life. Order all the gates to withdraw their troops, and we will find another way."
Song Jiang was consumed with anxiety, burning to avenge his grievances, and heaved endless sighs. "Black Whirlwind" said to him, "Elder brother, rest easy. Tomorrow I, Bao Xu, Xiang Chong, and Li Gun—we four will capture that fellow Shi Bao if it kills us!" Song Jiang said, "That man is a formidable hero. How could you even get near him?" Li Kui said, "I refuse to believe it. If I don't capture him tomorrow, I won't come back to see you, elder brother." Song Jiang said, "Just be careful and take this seriously—don't treat it as a trivial matter." "Black Whirlwind" Li Kui returned to his own tent, poured out big bowls of wine, laid out great platters of meat, and invited Bao Xu, Xiang Chong, and Li Gun to drink. He said, "The four of us have always fought together as one unit. Today I made a bold pledge before the vanguard commander, and tomorrow we must capture that fellow Shi Bao. You three must not be lazy about this." Bao Xu said, "Elder brother, today you told the cavalry to advance, tomorrow you'll tell the cavalry to advance—tonight we've made our pact, and tomorrow we must advance with one heart and capture that fellow Shi Bao. Let the four of us all prove ourselves!" The next morning, after Li Kui and the other three had eaten and drunk their fill, they all took up their weapons and left the camp, asking the vanguard commander to watch the battle. Song Jiang saw that all four were half drunk and said, "You four brothers, don't treat your lives as a game!" Li Kui said, "Elder brother, don't look down on us!" Song Jiang said, "I only hope your words come true!" Song Jiang mounted his horse and, together with the four cavalry officers Guan Sheng, Ou Peng, Lü Fang, and Guo Sheng, rode to the North Gate, where they beat the drums and waved their banners to challenge the enemy to battle. Li Kui, all ablaze with fury, gripped his pair of axes and stood before his horse; Bao Xu brandished his broad saber, his wild eyes glaring, ready for the fight; Xiang Chong and Li Gun each held a round shield, on which were stuck twenty-four flying knives, and they crouched on either side with iron spears in hand. Then they heard the clanging of gongs from atop the wall. Shi Bao rode out on a dun-yellow horse, wielding his Wind-Splitting Saber, leading two chief officers—Wu Zhi on the upper side and Lian Ming on the lower. The three officers had barely emerged from the city when Li Kui, a man who feared neither heaven nor earth, let out a great roar, and all four charged straight at Shi Bao's horse. Shi Bao raised his Wind-Splitting Saber to meet them, but they were already upon him. Li Kui swung one axe and chopped off the horse's legs, and Shi Bao leaped down, seeking refuge among the cavalry ranks. Bao Xu had already cut Lian Ming down from his horse with a single stroke. The two shield-bearers now sent their knives flying—through the air they darted like jade fish leaping in confusion, silver blades crossing and flashing. When Song Jiang drove his cavalry to the edge of the city wall, logs and stones came crashing down from above. Fearing some mishap, Song Jiang urgently ordered a retreat, but to his dismay, Bao Xu had already darted inside the city gate. Song Jiang could only cry out in anguish. Shi Bao had been lying in wait inside the gate. Seeing Bao Xu rush in, he struck from the side with a single slash of his blade and cut Bao Xu clean in two. Xiang Chong and Li Gun hastily shielded Li Kui and brought him back. Song Jiang's army retreated to their camp, and having lost Bao Xu on top of everything else, Song Jiang's grief and frustration only deepened. Li Kui too came weeping back to camp. Wu Yong said, "This plan was not a wise one either. Although we did cut down one of their generals, we lost Li Kui's lieutenant."
Just as the men were brooding over their troubles, Xie Zhen and Xie Bao arrived at the camp to report. When Song Jiang asked for the details, Xie Zhen reported, "My younger brother and I ranged as scouts all the way to twenty-odd li beyond the South Gate, to a place called Fan Village. We saw dozens of boats moored along the riverbank. When we went down to inquire, they turned out to be grain transport vessels belonging to Yuan Pingshi of Fuyang County. My brother and I wanted to kill them, but the man wept and said, 'We are all law-abiding subjects of the Great Song. We have been repeatedly squeezed and taxed by Fang La—anyone who refuses is killed along with their whole family. Now that the heavenly army has come to destroy him, we hoped only to see peaceful days again, yet here we are, facing senseless death.' When my brother and I heard the earnestness in his words, we could not bear to kill him. We asked him, 'Why have you come here?' He said, 'Recently I received Fang Tianding's orders, sent down to every county, to purge the villages and levy fifty thousand dan of white grain. As the headman, I collected five thousand dan and was the first to transport them here for delivery. Having reached this place, with the great army besieging the city and fighting, I did not dare go further, so I moored here.' Having learned these details, I have come specially to report to the commander-in-chief." Wu Yong was overjoyed and said, "This is a heaven-sent opportunity. We are certain to achieve great merit with these grain boats. Let the vanguard commander issue the order: you two brothers will lead, along with the artillerist Lingzhen and Du Qian, Li Yun, Shi Yong, Zou Yuan, Zou Run, Li Li, Bai Sheng, Mu Chun, and Tang Long. Wang Ying and Hu Sanniang, Sun Xin and Gu Dasao, Zhang Qing and Sun Erniang—these three couples will pose as boatmen and boatwomen. They are not to speak, but mingle among the boatmen. Once they have gotten into the city, they will fire the chain-shot cannon as the signal, and I will dispatch troops from here to support them." Xie Zhen and Xie Bao called Yuan Pingshi ashore and relayed Commander Song's words: "Since you are loyal subjects of the Song, follow this plan. When the matter is accomplished, you will be richly rewarded."
At this point, Yuan the Commentary Official had no choice but to comply. Many of the officers had already boarded the boats. The boatmen were all kept aboard for miscellaneous tasks, but their clothes were stripped and given to Wang Ying, Sun Xin, and Zhang Qing, who dressed up as boatmen. The three women warriors—Hu Sanniang, Gu Dasao, and Sun Erniang—disguised themselves as boat women. The soldiers all posed as oarsmen. The weapons were hidden away in the hold, and the boats were all sent to the shore. By this time, the Song army sentries guarding each gate were not far off. Yuan the Commentary Official went ashore, followed by Zhen Bao, Bao Yi, and the several boatmen, all the way to the gate of the city, where they called out to be let in. Those atop the wall, having learned the details of their story, reported this to the Crown Prince's palace. Fang Tianding then sent Wu Zhi to open the city gate. He came straight to the riverbank, inspected the boats, then returned to the city to report to Fang Tianding. Fang Tianding dispatched six generals with ten thousand troops to go out and take up positions to the northeast, instructing Yuan the Commentary Official to move the grain into the city for delivery. Meanwhile, the officers all mixed in among the boatmen and oarsmen, joining in carrying grain into the city. The three women warriors also entered the city with them. The five thousand bushels of grain were moved in no time. The six leading generals then led their troops back into the city. The Song soldiers came from all directions and once again surrounded the city walls, forming battle lines one or two *li* from the city. That night, at the second watch, Ling Zhen took out the nine boxes of mother-and-child cannons and went straight to the top of Wu Mountain, where he set them off. The other officers each took torches and set fires everywhere. In no time at all, the city was thrown into chaos—no one knew how many Song soldiers were inside. Fang Tianding, in the palace, was greatly alarmed upon hearing this. He hastily donned his armor and mounted his horse, but the soldiers on the walls at every gate had already fled for their lives. The Song troops surged forward, each striving to be first to take the city. Now, Li Jun and the others in the hills west of the city, having received their orders, led their troops to Cici Harbor, where they seized boats and sailed across the lake to land at Yongjin Gate. The officers split up to capture each of the water gates. Li Yun and Shi Xiu were the first to scale the walls. In the confusion of night fighting within the city, only the South Gate was left unbesieged—the doomed, routed troops all fled through that gate. Fang Tianding mounted his horse, but searched in all directions and could not find a single officer—only a few foot soldiers followed him. He fled through the South Gate, as frantic as a dog who has lost his home, as desperate as a fish that has slipped through the net. When he reached the foot of Wuyun Mountain, he saw a man rise up from the river, a knife clenched between his teeth, stark naked as he leaped ashore. Fang Tianding, seeing from horseback that the man approached with fierce intent, tried to spur his horse to flee. But the horse was acting strangely—no matter how he whipped it, it would not budge, as if someone were holding the bit in its mouth. The man rushed before the horse, dragged Fang Tianding down, and with one stroke cut off his head. He then mounted Fang Tianding's horse, holding the head in one hand and the knife in the other, and galloped back toward Hangzhou. When Lin Chong and Huyan Zhuo led their troops to Six Harmonies Tower, they happened to meet this man head-on. The two generals recognized him as Zhang Heng, the "Boat Flame," and were greatly startled. Huyan Zhuo called out, "Brother, where have you come from?" Zhang Heng did not answer. He rode straight into the city. By now, the main force of Song Jiang's army had already entered the city, and they established their headquarters in Fang Tianding's palace, with the officers guarding the temporary imperial quarters. When they saw Zhang Heng galloping toward them on horseback, everyone was alarmed. Zhang Heng rode straight up to Song Jiang, dismounted from his saddle, tossed the head and the knife to the ground, and kowtowed twice, then began to weep. Song Jiang quickly embraced Zhang Heng and said, "Brother, where have you come from? And where is Ruan Qi Xiao?" Zhang Heng said, "I am not Zhang Heng." Song Jiang said, "If you are not Zhang Heng, then who are you?" Zhang Heng said, "Your younger brother is Zhang Shun. I was riddled with spears and arrows outside Yongjin Gate and died. A single ghost of me drifted unceasingly upon the waters, and I was moved by the Dragon King of West Lake and Ze Lake, who received me as the Guardian of Jinhua and kept me as a deity in the water palace's dragon court. Today, my elder brother, you have breached the city walls. My single spirit clung to Fang Tianding, and in the middle of the night I followed him out of the city. I saw my elder brother Zhang Heng in the great river, and I borrowed my elder brother's body, flew ashore, followed Fang Tianding to the foot of Wuyun Mountain, killed this villain, and came straight to see my elder brother." Having spoken this, he suddenly collapsed to the ground. Song Jiang personally helped him up. Zhang Heng opened his eyes and looked at Song Jiang and the other officers—swords and spears stood like a forest, soldiers filled the ranks. Zhang Heng said, "Am I meeting my elder brother in the Yellow Springs?" Song Jiang wept and said, "Just now, your brother Zhang Shun attached his spirit to you and killed this villain Fang Tianding. You have not died—we are all living men. Open your eyes and see clearly." Zhang Shun said, "If that is so, then my brother is dead!" Song Jiang said, "Zhang Shun wanted to enter the water gate from beneath West Lake, get into the city, and set fires, but before he could pass the wall at Yongjin Gate, he was discovered and riddled with spears and arrows there." Upon hearing this, Zhang Shun let out a great cry: "Brother!" and collapsed at once. When the others looked at Zhang Shun, his limbs would not move, his eyes were dim, his seven earthly souls drifted far, and his three heavenly souls vanished into the distance. Truly:
He has not yet gone to meet the General of the Five Paths,
But surely the two messengers of impermanence have come to summon him.
What became of Zhang Shun after he collapsed—whether he lived or died—listen to the next chapter for the explanation.
