Chapter 109
In the autumn of the sixteenth year of the Yanyi era of Shu Han, General Jiang Wei raised an army of two hundred thousand and appointed Liao Hua and Zhang Yi as his left and right vanguard commanders, Xiahou Ba as his counsellor, and Zhang Yi as the supply transport commander. The great army marched out of Yangping Pass to campaign against Wei.
Jiang Wei discussed with Xiahou Ba, saying, "Our previous attempt to take Yongzhou ended in failure and retreat. If we launch another campaign now, they will surely be prepared. Do you have any sound advice?"
Ba said, "Among the commanderies in Longshang, Nan'an alone has the most abundant supplies of money and grain. If we capture it first, it will serve as a solid foundation. The reason we failed before was that the Qiang troops did not arrive. This time we could first send men to rendezvous with the Qiang in Longyou, then advance our army out of Shiying and strike directly at Nan'an via Dongting."
Jiang Wei was overjoyed and said, "Your counsel is excellent!" He then dispatched Xi Zheng as an envoy, bearing gold, pearls, and Shu brocade, to visit the Qiang and forge an alliance with the Qiang King. The Qiang King Mi Dang, having received the gifts, raised an army of fifty thousand and appointed the Qiang general Ehe Shaoge as his vanguard commander, leading the troops toward Nan'an.
Guo Huai, the Left General of Wei, received the report and dispatched a flying memorial to Luo Yang. Sima Shi asked his generals, "Who dares go and oppose the Shu army?"
Xu Zhi, the General Who Supports the State, said, "I am willing to go." Sima Shi had long known that Xu Zhi was exceptionally brave and was greatly pleased. He immediately appointed Xu Zhi as vanguard commander and ordered Sima Zhao to serve as Grand Commander, leading the troops toward Longxi. The army arrived at Dongting, where they encountered Jiang Wei's forces. The two armies drew up their battle formations. Xu Zhi wielded a great mountain-splitting axe and rode out to challenge. From the Shu ranks, Liao Hua rode out to meet him. After only a few bouts, Liao Hua feigned defeat and retreated. Zhang Yi spurred his horse forward with spear in hand to take his place, but after only a few bouts, he too retreated into the ranks. Xu Zhi drove his troops forward in pursuit, and the Shu forces were routed, falling back more than thirty li. Sima Zhao also withdrew his troops, and both sides made camp.
Jiang Wei discussed with Xiahou Ba, saying, "Xu Zhi is exceedingly fierce. What strategy can we use to capture him?"
Ba said, "Tomorrow we shall feign defeat and defeat him with an ambush."
Jiang Wei said, "Sima Zhao is the son of Zhongda—how could he not know military strategy? If he sees the terrain concealing an ambush, he will not pursue. I have observed that the Wei army has repeatedly cut off our supply lines. Now I shall use this very strategy to lure them in, and we can cut down Xu Zhi."
He then summoned Liao Hua and gave him specific instructions, then summoned Zhang Yi and gave him specific instructions as well. The two men led their troops away. Meanwhile, he ordered his soldiers to scatter caltrops along the road and to place numerous deer-antler barricades outside the camp, giving the appearance of a long-term encampment.
For several days running, Xu Zhi led his troops to provoke battle, but the Shu forces would not come out. A scout reported to Sima Zhao, saying, "The Shu army is on the rear side of Tielong Mountain, using wooden oxen and flowing horses to transport grain, preparing for a long campaign while waiting for the Qiang forces to support them."
Sima Zhao summoned Xu Zhi and said, "The reason we defeated Shu in the past was that we cut off their supply lines. Now the Shu army is transporting grain at the rear of Tielong Mountain. Tonight you shall lead five thousand troops and cut off their supply route—the Shu army will retreat on their own."
Xu Zhi received the order. At the beginning of the first watch, he led his troops toward Tielong Mountain. He indeed found some two hundred Shu soldiers driving over a hundred wooden oxen and flowing horses loaded with grain. With a great shout, the Wei soldiers rushed forward, and Xu Zhi was the first to block their path. The Shu soldiers abandoned all their grain and fled. Xu Zhi divided half his troops to escort the captured grain back to camp, and led the other half in pursuit. He had pursued less than ten li when he found wagons and carts blocking the road ahead. Xu Zhi ordered his men to dismount and dismantle the barricade, but suddenly fires broke out on both sides. Xu Zhi hastily reined his horse about and tried to retreat, but in the narrow mountain defile behind him, wagons and carts also blocked the path, and flames shot up. Xu Zhi and his men burst through the smoke and fire, riding out desperately. At the sound of a cannon, troops charged from both sides—Liao Hua on the left and Zhang Yi on the right—slaughtering the Wei forces, who were utterly routed. Xu Zhi fought desperately to escape alone, his men and horses spent.
As he fled, a body of troops appeared ahead—it was Jiang Wei himself. Xu Zhi was utterly at a loss. Jiang Wei thrust his spear and toppled Xu Zhi's mount. Xu Zhi fell from his horse and was cut down by the soldiers' blades. The half of Xu Zhi's troops who had been escorting the grain were also captured by Xiahou Ba, and all surrendered.
Xiahou Ba took the Wei soldiers' armor, clothing, and horses and dressed the Shu soldiers in them. He mounted them on the Wei horses, had them fly the Wei army banners, and led them by a small road straight back to the Wei camp. The Wei soldiers, seeing their own troops returning, opened the gates to let them in. The Shu soldiers then began killing within the camp. Sima Zhao was thrown into a panic. He scrambled onto his horse and tried to flee forward, but Liao Hua appeared ahead. Unable to advance, he hastily retreated, only to find Jiang Wei leading troops along a small road. With no road open in any direction, Sima Zhao had no choice but to lead his troops up Tielong Mountain and hold its position. The truth was that this mountain had only one path; on all sides it was steep and nearly impossible to ascend. On the summit there was but a single spring, sufficient for the drinking needs of only a hundred men. Sima Zhao now had six thousand men under his command. With Jiang Wei blocking the only path, the spring water on the mountain was insufficient, and his men and horses were parched with thirst. Sima Zhao looked up to heaven and said with a long sigh, "I shall die here!" A later poet wrote:
Jiang Wei's cunning schemes were no common art,
The Wei army trapped on Tielong Mountain's heart.
Like Pang Juan entering Maling's fatal way,
Or Xiang Yu first besieging Nine-Mile Mountain's day.
His chief clerk Wang Tao said, "In former times, Geng Gong was besieged and bowed over a well, and water was granted to him. Why not do the same, General?"
Sima Zhao followed his advice. He went to the spring at the mountaintop, bowed twice, and prayed, saying, "Zhao received the imperial decree to repel the Shu army. If Zhao deserves to die, let this sweet spring run dry, and Zhao will cut his throat and command his troops to surrender entirely. If my allotted span has not yet ended, may Heaven send forth sweet water soon to sustain the lives of my men!"
When he finished his prayer, water gushed forth from the spring, inexhaustible. And so his men and horses did not perish.
Meanwhile, Jiang Wei besieged the Wei troops below the mountain and said to his generals, "In former days, the Prime Minister was at Shangfang Valley and failed to capture Sima Yi—I have long regretted it. Now Sima Zhao shall surely fall into my hands!"
Now when Guo Huai learned that Sima Zhao was besieged on Iron Cage Mountain, he wanted to lead his troops to the rescue. Chen Tai said, "Jiang Wei has joined forces with the Qiang and intends to take Nan'an first. Now that the Qiang troops have arrived, if you withdraw your forces to relieve them, the Qiang will certainly strike our rear. We should first send someone to feign surrender to the Qiang and work from within. Only after we have repelled this force can we relieve the siege at Iron Cage Mountain."
Guo Huai agreed. He ordered Chen Tai to lead five thousand troops straight to the Qiang king's camp. Chen Tai removed his armor and entered weeping, prostrating himself. "Guo Huai is arrogant and has long wished to kill me, so I have come to surrender. I know all the strengths and weaknesses of Guo Huai's army. Tonight I will lead a force to raid his camp, and we will surely succeed. When the troops reach the Wei camp, there will be allies inside."
Mi Dang was overjoyed. He ordered Ehe Shao-ge to join Chen Tai in raiding the Wei camp. Ehe Shao-ge had the surrendered soldiers follow behind while Chen Tai led the Qiang troops in the vanguard. That night, at the second watch, they reached the Wei camp. The gates stood wide open. Chen Tai rode in first on horseback. When Ehe Shao-ge spurred his horse and charged into camp with his spear, he cried out once in anguish as both he and his horse tumbled into a pitfall. Chen Tai attacked from behind, Guo Huai struck from the left, and the Qiang troops fell into chaos, trampling one another. Countless died; all who survived surrendered. Ehe Shao-ge took his own life.
Guo Huai and Chen Tai led their troops straight to the Qiang camp. The Qiang king Mi Dang rushed out of his tent and mounted his horse, but the Wei soldiers captured him alive and brought him before Guo Huai. Guo Huai hastily dismounted, personally removed his bonds, and spoke soothingly: "The court has always regarded you as loyal and righteous. Why have you aided the men of Shu?"
Mi Dang confessed his guilt, ashamed. Guo Huai then persuaded him: "Now lead the vanguard, go and lift the siege of Iron Cage Mountain, drive back the Shu forces, and I will petition the Son of Heaven to grant you generous rewards."
Mi Dang agreed. He led the Qiang troops in front with the Wei troops behind, making straight for Iron Cage Mountain. It was the third watch. He first sent word to Jiang Wei. Jiang Wei was delighted and ordered that Mi Dang be brought in for an audience. Most of the Wei soldiers were mingled among the Qiang. When they reached the Shu camp, Jiang Wei ordered the main force to encamp outside, while Mi Dang led a hundred men to the command tent. Jiang Wei and Xiahou Ba came out to meet them. Before Mi Dang could speak, the Wei generals attacked from behind. Jiang Wei was greatly alarmed and fled on horseback. The Qiang and Wei forces charged in together. The Shu troops scattered in all directions, each fleeing for his life. Jiang Wei had nothing in his hands but a bow and arrows at his belt. In his haste he dropped all his arrows, leaving only an empty quiver. He fled toward the hills, with Guo Huai pursuing behind him. Seeing that Jiang Wei was unarmed, Guo Huai spurred his horse and leveled his spear. As he drew close, Jiang Wei drew his bowstring and let it snap repeatedly more than ten times. Guo Huai dodged several times but saw no arrows coming, and realizing Jiang Wei had none, he hung up his spear and fitted an arrow to his bow. Jiang Wei dodged swiftly, caught the arrow in his hand, and fitted it to his bowstring. When Guo Huai pursued close again, he shot with all his might at Guo Huai's face. Guo Huai fell from his horse, struck by the arrow. Jiang Wei reined in his mount, intending to kill Guo Huai, but Wei troops arrived too quickly. Unable to finish the act, he seized Guo Huai's spear and fled. The Wei soldiers dared not pursue. They rushed Guo Huai back to camp and pulled out the arrowhead, but the blood would not stop, and he died. Sima Zhao came down from the mountain and led troops in pursuit, but turned back halfway. Xiahou Ba fled afterward and joined Jiang Wei in their retreat. Jiang Wei had lost many men and horses and could not rally his forces along the way. He returned to Hanzhong on his own. Though he had been defeated, he had shot Guo Huai dead and killed Xu Zhi, dealing a blow to Wei's prestige and offsetting his crime with merit.
Now after Sima Zhao rewarded the Qiang troops and sent them home, he returned his army to Luoyang. There, together with his elder brother Sima Shi, he monopolized the court's authority, and no minister dared defy him. Whenever the Wei ruler Cao Fang saw Sima Shi enter court, he trembled uncontrollably, as if needles were piercing his back. One day, as court was convened and Sima Shi entered the hall wearing his sword, Cao Fang hastily descended from his throne to greet him. Sima Shi smiled and said, "How can there be a precedent for a sovereign greeting his subject? Please, Your Majesty, remain at ease." Presently the ministers presented matters of state, and Sima Shi decided everything himself, never consulting the Wei ruler. After a short while, Sima Shi withdrew, descending the hall with an air of pride, riding out of the palace in a carriage with thousands of attendants before and behind him.
Cao Fang retired to the inner palace. Of those around him, only three remained: the Minister of Ceremonies Xiahou Xuan, the Palace Secretary Li Feng, and the Grand Master of Ceremonies Zhang Ji. Zhang Ji was the father of Empress Zhang, Cao Fang's father-in-law. Cao Fang dismissed the attendants and went with the three men to a private chamber. Grasping Zhang Ji's hand, he wept. "Sima Shi treats me as a child and regards all the officials as weeds. The throne will surely fall to this man before long!" And he wept bitterly.
Li Feng said, "Your Majesty need not worry. Though I am untalented, I will act on Your Majesty's wise decree to gather heroes from all quarters to destroy this villain."
Xiahou Xuan said, "My elder brother Xiahou Ba surrendered to Shu because he feared the Sima brothers would harm him. If we now destroy this villain, my brother will surely return. I am an old servant of the state—how can I sit idle while traitors bring chaos to the realm? I will join in carrying out the decree against them."
Cao Fang said, "I only fear we may not succeed."
The three men wept and declared: "We swear to unite in destroying this villain to repay Your Majesty!"
Liu Fang removed his dragon-and-phoenix sweat shirt, bit the tip of his finger, and wrote a blood edict, which he handed to Zhang Ji. He then admonished them, saying, "My ancestor, Emperor Wu, slew Dong Cheng because the plans were not kept secret. You must be careful and thorough, and do not let this leak outside." Wang Feng said, "Why does Your Majesty speak such inauspicious words? We are not of Dong Cheng's kind, and how can Sima Shi compare to Emperor Wu? Let Your Majesty have no doubts." The three men took their leave. When they reached the left side of the Donghua Gate, they met Sima Shi coming with sword in hand, attended by several hundred men, all bearing weapons. The three stood by the roadside. Sima Shi asked, "Why are you three leaving court so late?" Li Feng said, "His Majesty was reading in the inner palace, and we were attending him as readers." Sima Shi asked, "What book was he reading?" Feng said, "The books of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties." Sima Shi asked, "What stories did the Sovereign ask about from these books?" Feng said, "The Son of Heaven asked about Yi Yin supporting the Shang and the Duke of Zhou acting as regent. We all replied, 'The Grand General of Sima today is the Yi Yin and the Duke of Zhou of our time.'" Sima Shi said with a cold laugh, "How dare you compare me to Yi Yin and the Duke of Zhou! In your hearts you are pointing at me as a Wang Mang or a Dong Zhuo!" The three men all said, "We are all men under the General's command—how would we dare do such a thing?" Sima Shi, greatly enraged, said, "You are flatterers! Just now, what were you weeping about with the Son of Heaven in the secret chamber?" The three men said, "There was truly no such thing." Sima Shi rebuked them, "Your eyes are still red from weeping—how can you deny it?" Xiahou Xuan, knowing the affair had been exposed, raised his voice and cursed, "What we were weeping about was that you overawe your sovereign and are plotting to usurp the throne!" Sima Shi, furious, ordered the guards to seize Xiahou Xuan. Xiahou Xuan rolled up his sleeves and struck directly at Sima Shi, but was seized by the guards. Sima Shi ordered each man searched. From Zhang Ji's person they took out a dragon-and-phoenix sweat shirt bearing words written in blood. The attendants presented it to Sima Shi. He examined it and found it was a secret edict. The edict read:
"Sima Shi and his brother together hold great power and are plotting to usurp the throne. The edicts and orders they issue are not Our will. Let all officers and soldiers of every command, relying on their loyalty and righteousness, join in destroying these traitors and supporting the altars of the state. When the deed is done, they shall be richly rewarded with titles and gifts."
When Sima Shi had finished reading, he burst into furious rage and said, "So you were plotting to destroy us brothers! This cannot be tolerated by any principle of reason!" He ordered the three men cut in two at the waist in the marketplace and their three clans exterminated. The three men cursed without ceasing. When they were brought to the Eastern Market, their teeth were all knocked out, and each died cursing incoherently. Sima Shi went straight into the rear palace. The Lord of Wei, Cao Fang, was discussing the matter with Empress Zhang. The Empress said, "There are many eyes and ears in the inner court. If the matter leaks, it will surely bring disaster upon me!" Even as they spoke, Sima Shi suddenly entered, and the Empress was greatly alarmed. Sima Shi, laying his hand on his sword, said to Fang, "My father established Your Majesty as sovereign, with merit no less than the Duke of Zhou. And I have served Your Majesty—how am I different from Yi Yin? Yet you now repay kindness with enmity and regard merit as fault, wishing to conspire with a few petty ministers to destroy my brother and me. Why?" Fang said, "I have no such intention." Sima Shi took the sweat shirt from his sleeve, threw it to the ground, and said, "Who did this?" Fang's soul flew beyond the heavens and his spirit scattered to the nine skies. Trembling, he answered, "This was all done under the compulsion of others. How would I dare entertain such a thought?" Sima Shi said, "What is the penalty for falsely accusing a great minister of rebellion?" Fang knelt and pleaded, "I indeed deserve guilt. I beg the Grand General to pardon me!" Sima Shi said, "Your Majesty, please rise. The law of the state cannot be set aside." He then pointed at Empress Zhang and said, "This is Zhang Ji's daughter. She ought to be put away." Fang wept and begged for her life, but Sima Shi did not relent. He ordered the attendants to take Empress Zhang out, and within the Donghua Gate she was strangled with a white silk cord. A later poet wrote:
"Back then the Empress Fu left the palace gate,
Barefoot, crying in anguish, parting from her lord.
Today the Sima follow this very precedent—
Heaven decrees that retribution returns upon one's own children and grandchildren."
The next day, Sima Shi assembled all the ministers and said, "The present sovereign is dissolute and without principle, consorts with prostitutes and actors, heeds slanderous words, and blocks the path of the worthy. His crimes are greater than those of the Prince of Changyi of Han. He cannot preside over the world. I, following the examples of Yi Yin and Huo Guang, will set up a new sovereign to protect the altars of state and bring peace to the realm. What say you?" All replied, "The Grand General acts as Yi Yin and Huo Guang—this is what is called responding to Heaven and following the people. Who would dare disobey?" Sima Shi then went with many officials to the Yongning Palace to report to the Empress Dowager. The Empress Dowager said, "Whom does the Grand General wish to install as sovereign?" Sima Shi said, "I observe that the Prince of Pengcheng, Cao Ju, is wise, intelligent, benevolent, and filial—he could be the master of the world." The Empress Dowager said, "The Prince of Pengcheng is this old woman's uncle. If he is installed as sovereign, how should I be placed? There is the Duke of Gaogui, Cao Mao, a grandson of Emperor Wen. This man is gentle, respectful, and humble—he could be installed. Let you ministers deliberate at length." One man said, "The Empress Dowager's words are correct. He may be installed at once." All looked and saw it was Sima Fu, Sima Shi's uncle of the same clan. Sima Shi then sent an envoy to Yuancheng to summon the Duke of Gaogui. He asked the Empress Dowager to ascend the Taiji Palace, where they summoned Fang and reproached him, saying, "You are dissolute beyond measure and consort with prostitutes and actors. You cannot inherit the world. You must yield the seals and ribbons and resume the rank of Prince of Qi. Depart at once, and do not enter court without being summoned." Fang wept and bowed to the Empress Dowager, surrendered the treasures of the state, and left weeping in the prince's carriage. Only a few loyal and righteous ministers saw him off with tears in their eyes. A later poet wrote:
"When Cao Man served the Han of old,
He bullied the widow and the orphan.
Who could have known that forty years later,
The widow and the orphan too would be bullied!"
Now Cao Mao, Duke of Gaogui, courtesy name Yanshi, was the grandson of Emperor Wen and the son of Prince Ding of Donghai, Cao Lin. On that day, Sima Shi summoned him by order of the Empress Dowager. Civil and military officials prepared the imperial carriage and welcomed him outside the West Gate. Mao hurriedly returned the salute. Grand Commandant Wang Su said, "Your Majesty should not return the salute." Mao said, "I am also a subject. How dare I not return the salute?" The officials assisted Mao onto the carriage and into the palace. Mao declined, saying, "I do not know the reason for the Empress Dowager's decree. How dare I ride in the carriage and enter?" He therefore walked to the Eastern Hall of the Taiji Palace. Sima Shi came to greet him. Mao bowed first, and Sima Shi hastily raised him up. After exchanging greetings, he was presented to the Empress Dowager. She said, "When I saw you as a child, you bore the features of a sovereign. Now you may become the master of all under Heaven. You must be respectful, frugal, and temperate; spread virtue and bestow benevolence; and do not disgrace the late Emperor." Mao humbly declined again and again. Sima Shi ordered the officials to escort Mao out of the Taiji Hall. On that day, he was established as the new sovereign. The reign title was changed from the sixth year of Jiaping to the first year of Zhengyuan. A general amnesty was declared throughout the realm. Grand General Sima Shi was granted the golden axe, permitted to enter the court without hastening his steps, to present matters without naming himself, and to ascend the hall wearing his sword. Civil and military officials all received titles and rewards.
In the first month of the second year of Zhengyuan, a spy rushed in with a report that General Who Guards the East, Qiu Danqian, and Inspector of Yangzhou, Wen Qin, using the pretext of restoring the deposed sovereign, had raised troops and were advancing. Sima Shi was greatly alarmed. Truly it was said:
A Han minister once had the will to aid his sovereign;
A Wei general now raises an army to punish the traitor.
How the enemy was met will be told in the next chapter.
