In middle years I grew fond of the Way,

And late in life made my home by Zhongnan's edge.

When the mood takes me, I wander alone—

These joys I know, and know them in vain.

I walk to the place where the streams run out,

And sit watching the moment the clouds arise.

By chance I meet an old man of the woods,

We talk and laugh, with no fixed hour for return.
