驪山頂上,料應褒姒逞英雄;

Chapter 108
Now, Yang Zhi, Sun An, and Bian Xiang were pursuing Xi Sheng, and when they reached the side of Yique Mountain, they failed to guard against the ambush of enemy generals behind the hillside, who led ten thousand cavalry in a sudden charge, engaging Yang Zhi and the others in a fierce battle. Xi Sheng escaped and led his battered troops back into the city. Sun An fought with desperate valor, killing two enemy generals, but they were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Over a thousand armored cavalry were all driven by the enemy soldiers into a deep valley. The valley was surrounded on all sides by sheer cliffs with no way out. The enemy soldiers carried timber and stones to seal off the mouth of the valley. The enemy entered the city and reported to Gong Duan. Gong Duan dispatched two thousand soldiers to guard the mouth of the valley. Yang Zhi, Sun An, and the others could not escape even if they had wings.
Let us leave aside the matter of Yang Zhi and the others being trapped, and speak instead of how Lu Junyi and the others broke Xi Sheng's Six-Flower Formation. The greater part of the victory was owed to Ma Ling's Golden Brick Technique, which struck down a great number of enemy soldiers. Together with the fierce bravery of the various generals, they achieved a complete victory, slaying three fierce generals among the enemy. Pressing their advantage, they drove their troops forward and seized Longmen Pass, beheading over ten thousand men, and seizing an incalculable number of horses, suits of armor, and war drums. The enemy soldiers retreated into the city. Lu Junyi took a count of his troops and noticed that Yang Zhi, Sun An, and Bian Xiang, along with their thousand-man vanguard force, were nowhere to be found. Lu Junyi immediately ordered Zhen Zhen, Zhen Bao, Zou Yuan, and Zou Run each to lead a thousand men in four separate directions to search for them. By nightfall, there was still no trace.
The next day, Lu Junyi held his troops in place and again ordered Zhen Zhen and the others to search. Zhen Bao led one detachment, climbing vines and clinging to creepers, scaling mountains and crossing ridges, until he reached the highest peak east of Yique Mountain. From there he saw that to the west of the peak, in a deep valley below, there appeared to be a cluster of men and horses, hidden by the dense forest so that he could not make out the details. Moreover, the height difference was so great that no calls could be heard between them. Zhen Bao led his soldiers down the mountain to ask a local resident for information. There was one household there, but the inhabitants had all fled because of the warfare. Later he came to a remote, flat hollow deep in the mountains, where there were a few impoverished peasant families. When they saw the soldiers, they were thrown into a panic. Zhen Bao said, "We are soldiers of the court, here to exterminate the bandits." When the people heard they were government troops, they became even more frightened. Zhen Bao spoke soothingly: "Our generals are under the command of Commander Song." The people asked, "Could it be Commander Song who slew the Tartars and captured Tian Hu, and who does not harass the populace?" Zhen Bao said, "That is he exactly." The peasants knelt and bowed, saying, "We had heard that your soldiers would not seize chickens and tie up dogs! In previous years, government troops also came here to exterminate bandits, but those soldiers plundered just like brigands. That is why we fled to this place. Today, having you generals here, we can once again see the light of heaven." Zhen Bao asked the villagers about the whereabouts of Yang Zhi's thousand-man force and about the deep valley to the west of the ridge. The people all said, "This valley is called the Anlao Hollow, and there is only one path leading into it." The peasants then led Zhen Bao and his men to the mouth of the valley, where they happened to meet Zou Yuan and Zou Run, whose two detachments had also found their way there. Combining their forces, they scattered the enemy soldiers and advanced together, clearing away the timber and stones that blocked the entrance. Zhen Bao and Zou Yuan led their troops into the valley. By then it was already late autumn, and indeed it was a magnificent deep, secluded valley. Observe:
The jade-like dew withers and wounds the maple groves;
The deep cliffs and secluded valley breathe an air of solemn chill.
At the mountain's crest, clouds and mist surge up to join the sky;
The sheer walls and dark bamboos cast shadows down to the earth.
Yang Zhi, Sun An, Bian Xiang, and the thousand soldiers, their horses exhausted and themselves worn out, sat beneath the trees waiting for death. When they saw Zhen Bao and his troops, all leaped up with joy and shouted in jubilation. Zhen Bao distributed the dried provisions he had brought to Yang Zhi and the others, that they might first stave off their hunger. After they had eaten, all the soldiers marched out of the valley together. Zhen Bao asked the peasant villagers to follow them to the main camp to see Commander Lu. Lu Junyi was greatly pleased. He distributed silver and rice to relieve the poor people. The peasants kowtowed in gratitude, thanking him a thousand times over, and departed. Shortly afterward, Zhen Zhen's detachment also returned to camp. That day they rested for the evening, and nothing further happened through the night.
Early the next morning, Lu Junyi and Zhu Wu were deploying troops to attack the city when a swift scout arrived with urgent news: Wang Qing had sent the false commander Du Fu with twelve officers and twenty thousand troops to relieve the siege. They were already within thirty li of the camp. Upon receiving this report, Lu Junyi ordered Zhu Wu, Yang Zhi, Sun Li, Shan Tinggui, Wei Dingguo, together with Qiao Daoqing and Ma Ling, to lead twenty thousand troops and form ranks before the main camp to prevent the enemy sorters from the city. He ordered Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, Mu Chun, and Xue Yong to lead five thousand troops to guard the mountain stronghold. Lu Junyi personally led the remaining officers and thirty-five thousand troops to meet Du Fu. At this moment, the roamer Yan Qing reported: "My lord, it is not fitting for you to personally join the battle today." Lu Junyi asked, "And why is that?" Yan Qing said, "Last night, I had an ominous dream." Lu Junyi said, "Dreams are hardly worth trusting. Since I have devoted myself to the state, I cannot concern myself with fortune or peril." Yan Qing said: "If my lord insists on going, please give me five hundred foot soldiers to carry out my own plans." Lu Junyi laughed and said, "Xiaoyi, what do you intend to do?" Yan Qing said: "My lord need not concern yourself; simply give them to me." Lu Junyi said: "I shall give them to you, then, and see what you accomplish!" He at once assigned five hundred foot soldiers to Yan Qing. Yan Qing took them and departed on his own. Lu Junyi smiled coldly. He led the remaining officers and troops away from the camp, passing through Pingquan Bridge. The Pingquan spring was filled with curious stones—it was the old estate of Li Deyu of the Tang dynasty. He noticed Yan Qing leading his men cutting trees there. Lu Junyi found it amusing in his heart, but he was too pressed with battle to inquire. The troops passed ten li west of Longmen Pass and formed ranks to the west to wait. After the space of a double hour, the rebel army finally arrived. The two armies faced each other, drums thundering and voices raised in battle cries. From the western ranks, the lieutenant general Wei He, wielding a great polearm saber, spurred his horse forward. From the Song ranks, Shan Shiqi rode forth with spear leveled, and without a word, engaged him in combat. The two horsemen fought over thirty bouts before Shan Shiqi thrust his spear into the hind leg of Wei He's horse. The horse's hind hooves buckled and threw Wei He from the saddle. Shan Shiqi thrust again and killed him. In the western ranks, Fen Tai flew into a rage. Wielding two iron clubs, he charged straight at Shan Shiqi. The two generals fought for over ten bouts. Bian Xiang saw that Shan Shiqi could not overcome Fen Tai, and rode to his aid with spear in hand. But Fen Tai let out a great shout, struck Shan Shiqi from his horse with a single blow of his club, and struck again, ending his life. He turned his horse and rode forward with sword drawn to meet Bian Xiang, but Bian Xiang was even more ferocious. As Fen Tai's horse approached, Bian Xiang shouted and thrust his spear into Fen Tai's heart, killing him beneath his horse. Both armies roared. The western commander Du Fu, seeing two of his officers fallen in succession, burned with fury and rage. He leveled an eight-zhang serpent spear, urged his horse forward, and rode out to battle in person. The Song commander Lu Junyi also rode out in personal command. He fought Du Fu for over fifty bouts without either gaining the upper hand. Du Fu's serpent spear moved like a phantom. Sun An saw that Commander Lu could not prevail and rode to his aid with sword in hand. The rebel officer Zhuo Mao, wielding a wolf-tooth mace, galloped forth to meet him. After no more than four or five bouts, Sun An summoned his divine might and struck Zhuo Mao from his horse with a single sword blow. Sun An wheeled his horse forward and slashed at Du Fu. Du Fu, caught off guard by the death of Zhuo Mao, was struck by Sun An's sword, which severed his right arm and threw him from his horse. Lu Junyi thrust once more with his spear and ended his life. Lu Junyi and the others drove their troops forward in pursuit, and the rebel army was utterly routed.
Suddenly, from a narrow sloping path to the southwest, a column of cavalry burst forth. The rider at the front was coarse, dark, and hideous in appearance, with a head of unkempt short hair, wearing an iron crown and a crimson battle robe, mounted on a red horse like burning coal. He commanded the troops with sword in hand, galloping forward with savage leaps. Lu Junyi and the others saw that they wore rebel uniforms and charged forward en masse to engage them. But the officer did not come to fight. He muttered a few words, then swung his sword toward the Li trigram position to the south. In an instant, the rebel officer spewed fire from his mouth. In no time, flames roared up from the flat ground and smoke billowed thickly, rushing toward the Song army. Lu Junyi could not escape in time. The Song army was utterly defeated, abandoning drums and horses in chaotic flight. Those who could not flee were burned beyond recognition. Over five thousand soldiers perished. The officers protected Lu Junyi and fled to Pingquan Bridge. The soldiers scrambled onto the bridge, and in the crush the bridge collapsed beneath them. Fortunately, Yan Qing had felled trees and just completed a makeshift bridge on either side, allowing the soldiers to cross and saving twenty thousand lives. Lu Junyi and Bian Xiang, two horsemen bringing up the rear, reached the bridge only to be overtaken by the rebel officer, who spewed a mouthful of fire at Bian Xiang. Bian Xiang was engulfed in flames, burned, and thrown from his horse, where the rebel soldiers killed him. Lu Junyi, thanks to the improvised bridge, galloped away to safety.
The enemy general came in pursuit with his troops, but received a report from the advance force informing him of Qiao Daoqing. Qiao Daoqing rode out alone, sword in hand, to meet the enemy general. When that general saw Qiao Daoqing coming toward him, he again swung his sword southward and struck, and the fire burned even more fiercely than before. Qiao Daoqing formed a mudra and muttered an incantation, then pointed his sword toward the north and employed his art of "Samadhi Divine Water." In an instant, a thousand streams of black vapor flew forward to meet the flames, transforming into cascading waterfalls and rushing springs, like countless bushels of jade pearls and powdered gems, pouring down upon the enemy general and extinguishing the sorcerous fire. When the enemy general saw his sorcery broken, he turned his horse to flee, but his mount stepped upon a stone in the water, its hind hooves slipped, and the general was thrown from his saddle. Qiao Daoqing galloped after him and swung his sword, cleaving him in two. Of the five thousand cavalry, over five hundred were thrown or injured in the fall. Qiao Daoqing raised his sword and roared, "If you are willing to surrender, I will spare your worthless heads!" The enemy soldiers, seeing such supernatural power, all dismounted, cast down their weapons, and prostrated themselves begging for their lives. Qiao Daoqing spoke to them with kind words to soothe them, cut off the enemy general's head, and led the surrendered troops to present his victory to Vanguard Lu. Lu Junyi thanked him profusely and praised Yan Qing for his meritorious service. The generals questioned the surrendered soldiers and learned that the sorcerer's surname was Kou, his given name was Wu, and he was in the habit of burning people with sorcerous fire. Because his appearance was hideously ugly, people called him the "Poisonous Flame Demon King." In former years he had aided Wang Qing in his rebellion, but no one knew where he had gone for the past two years. Recently he had arrived again at Nanfeng and said, "The Song army is powerful—let me go and crush them." For this reason, Wang Qing had dispatched him with all haste to this place. Gong Duan and Xi Sheng saw that their reinforcements had been defeated and dared not come out to fight; they merely added troops to defend the city more firmly.
At this point Qiao Daoqing said, "This city is deep and well-fortified; it cannot be taken in haste. Tonight this poor priest will employ a small art to help the Vanguard succeed, in gratitude for the great kindness of the two Vanguards." Lu Junyi said, "I would be glad to hear of your divine art." Qiao Daoqing whispered into his ear and said, "Do thus and thus." Lu Junyi was overjoyed and at once dispatched his officers and men to carry out their tasks in preparation for the assault. Meanwhile, he ordered the soldiers with proper rites to bury Shan Shiqi and Bian Xiang, and Lu Junyi himself conducted the memorial sacrifice.
That night, at the second watch, Qiao Daoqing came out and performed his sorcery with sword in hand. In a moment, mist arose and enveloped the entire city of Xijing; the soldiers on the walls could not distinguish anything an arm's length away, unable to see one another. The Song soldiers took advantage of the darkness, ascending the revolving pulleys and scaling the ramparts. When a single cannon blast was suddenly heard, the heavy fog abruptly cleared and gathered its light, and upon the city walls on all four sides were Song soldiers. Each man took a fire-starter from his person and lit torches, illuminating above and below as bright as broad daylight. The defending soldiers, first struck dumb with terror and unable to move, were cut down by the Song soldiers, who drew their weapons, and the enemy soldiers who fell from the walls were beyond counting. Gong Duan and Xi Sheng, seeing this sudden turn of events, hastily led troops to respond, but the Song army had already seized the four gates. Lu Junyi drove his forces into the city in great numbers. Gong Duan and Xi Sheng were both killed in the melee. The remaining subordinate officers and leaders all surrendered; thirty thousand soldiers laid down their arms, and the common people were left entirely unharmed.
At daybreak, Lu Junyi issued a proclamation to reassure the people, recorded the great deeds of Qiao Daoqing, and richly rewarded the officers and men of the three armies. He then sent Ma Ling to report the victory to Song Jiang, the vanguard commander. Ma Ling obeyed the order and departed, returning late that day with word: "Song Jiang and the others have been attacking Jingnan, engaging the rebels in battle for days on end. They have routed the Nengfeng reinforcements and captured their commander Xie Ning. However, Song Jiang, exhausted from the toils of war, has fallen ill in camp. For several days now, it has been Military Advisor Wu who has been directing all military affairs." When Lu Junyi received this report, he was deeply troubled. He quickly made arrangements for the army's affairs and placed the Western Capital's city and garrison under the command of Qiao Daoqing and Ma Ling. The following day, Lu Junyi took leave of Qiao Daoqing and Ma Ling, and leading Zhu Wu and twenty other officers, departed the Western Capital and hastened toward Jingnan. In due course, the troops arrived at the Northern Grand Encampment outside Jingnan City. Lu Junyi and the others entered the camp to inquire after Song Jiang's health. Thanks to the healing arts of the "Divine Physician" An Daoquan, Song Jiang's illness had already abated by six or seven parts in ten. Lu Junyi and the others were greatly comforted. As they were exchanging news of the various armies, a soldier who had escaped the fray came rushing in to report: "Tang Bin was escorting Xiao Rang and the others. When they had traveled thirty li from the grand encampment, they were suddenly ambushed by the Jingnan rebel commanders Mi Sheng and Miang, who led ten thousand elite soldiers out from a narrow side path. Taking advantage of the vanguard commander's illness, they meant to raid the rear of the grand encampment—and that was where they encountered our men. Tang Bin fought the two commanders single-handedly, but what could he do against such overwhelming numbers, especially given Mi Sheng's extraordinary ferocity? Tang Bin was killed by Mi Sheng. Xiao Rang, Pei Xuan, and Jin Dajian were all taken alive. The rebels had been on the verge of raiding our camp, but upon learning that Commander Lu and his large force had arrived, the rebels seized Xiao Rang and the others and fled." When Song Jiang heard this, he could not help but cry out in anguish: "The lives of Xiao Rang and the others are forfeit!" His illness thereupon grew grave once more. Lu Junyi and all the other generals came to console him. Lu Junyi asked: "Where have Xiao Rang and the others been taken?" Song Jiang answered through his sobs: "Xiao Rang knew I was ill and took leave of Prefect Chen to come see me. He had also received Prefect Chen's orders to bring Jin Dajian and Pei Xuan to Wanzhou, where they were to have them inscribe a stone stele and examine the official documents. I had specially assigned Tang Bin with a thousand men to escort the three of them. Who could have foreseen that they would be captured by the rebels? The three of them will surely be put to death!" Song Jiang then ordered Lu Junyi to assist Wu Yong in attacking the city and to capture Mi Sheng and Miang to avenge them. Lu Junyi and the others obeyed the order and proceeded to the army before the north of the city. After the men had exchanged salutations with Wu Yong, the Erudite, Lu Junyi immediately related the news of Xiao Rang and the others' capture. Wu Yong was greatly alarmed. "How bitter! These three men are doomed!" He issued orders commanding the generals to surround the city and attack it with all their might. The generals obeyed and assaulted the city from all four sides. Wu Yong further ordered the soldiers to scale the cloud ladders and shout loudly into the city: "Send out Xiao Rang, Jin Dajian, and Pei Xuan at once! If you delay even slightly, we will smash the city, and whether soldier or civilian, none shall be spared!"
Now, the city's defending commander Liang Yong had fraudulously been appointed as garrison administrator, and together with his senior and junior officers, he was guarding the city in town. Mi Sheng and Ma Qiang had both been defeated in battle and fled here. That day, they had captured Xiao Rang and three others. Because the Song troops had not yet besieged the city, Mi Sheng had the city gates opened to enter, and brought Xiao Rang and the others to the prefectural office to present them as captives. Liang Yong had somewhat heard of the reputation of the "Scholar with Divine Hands," so he ordered the soldiers to untie their bonds and tried to make them surrender. Xiao Rang, Pei Xuan, and Jin Dajian glared back and cursed at him, saying: "Ignorant rebel scum! Look at what manner of men we are! Rebel scum, just cut us in two with a single stroke! These six knee bones will never so much as touch the ground! Soon Commander Song will break through this city and seize every last one of you rats, and chop you into ten thousand pieces!" Liang Yong flew into a rage and called to the soldiers: "Beat these three slave dogs until they kneel!" The soldiers picked up cudgels and began beating them. Though they were beaten and knocked to the ground, not one of them was willing to kneel. The three men cursed without cease. Liang Yong said: "You want to be cut in two with a single stroke? I will slowly make you suffer." He ordered the soldiers: "Put these three slave dogs in cangues outside the headquarters gate and keep beating their legs. Once you break those donkey legs, they'll naturally kneel down." The soldiers received their orders and proceeded to put them in cangues, strip and bind them. The soldiers and residents in front of the headquarters all came to look at these men from the Song army. Among them, there was a true man of great spirit who was already burning with fury. That man's surname was Xiao, his given name Jiasui, and he was lodging in a residence next to a paper shop on South Street of the prefectural headquarters. His great-grandfather was Xiao Dan, style name Sengda, a man of the Northern and Southern Dynasties who served as Regional Inspector of Jingnan. When the Yangtze River breached its dikes, Xiao Dan personally led his officers and clerks into the rain to make repairs. The rain was torrential and the waters fierce, and the officers and clerks begged him to take shelter for a while, but Xiao Dan said, "Wang Zun wished to block the river with his own body. What other motive should I have?" When he finished speaking, the water receded and the dikes stood firm. That same year, auspicious grain grew with six ears on a single stalk—and Xiao Jiasui's name was drawn from this. Xiao Jiasui happened to be traveling in Jingnan, and the people of Jingnan, recalling and admiring the benevolence of their ancestor, held Xiao Jiasui in the highest esteem. Xiao Jiasui had a bold and generous spirit, lofty aspirations, a magnanimous disposition, strength surpassing that of ordinary men, and refined martial skills—he was truly a man of exceptional courage. Whenever he encountered anyone of integrity and courage, no matter their station, he would befriend them. It happened that Wang Qing had risen in rebellion and seized cities. Xiao Jaisui had offered strategies to defend against the rebels, but those in authority refused to adopt his plans, resulting in the city's fall. The rebels had issued an order that all commoners were allowed to enter the city but none were permitted to leave. Xiao Jaisui remained in the city, plotting day and night to overthrow the rebels, but a single thread does not make a cord. Today, he saw the rebels strip and bind Xiao Rang and the other three, and he heard that the Song troops were attacking the city urgently on account of Xiao Rang and the others, causing the soldiers and civilians alike to show signs of panic. Xiao Jaisui thought it over and said, "The opportunity is here. With this one move, I can preserve the lives of countless souls in this city." He hurried back to his lodging. By then it was the hour of the Shen period (3–5 PM). He quickly had a servant grind a bowl of ink, went to the paper shop next door and bought several sheets of thick cotton paper made from hide, and by lamplight dipped his brush and wrote in large characters:
All the people in this city are loyal subjects of the Song dynasty and will never willingly aid the rebels. Commander Song is a fine general of the court—he slaughtered the Tartars and captured Tian Hu; nowhere can anyone withstand his might. His one hundred and eight officers are as close to him as his own arms and legs. The three men stripped and bound outside the headquarters gate refuse to bend their knees in submission. From this, Commander Song and the others' heroism and loyalty are plain to see. If the rebels kill these three men today, the city has few soldiers and weak officers. Sooner or later they will break through, and everything will be destroyed together—good and bad alike. All soldiers and civilians in this city who wish to preserve your lives, follow me and kill the rebels!
When Xiao Jaisui had finished writing all the sheets of paper, he quietly went out to listen for news, and heard that the common people were weeping in their homes. Xiao Jaisui said, "The people's hearts are thus—my plan will succeed!" He waited until the hour before dawn, then slipped out of his lodging and scattered the sheets of written paper throughout the busy streets on the left and right in front of the prefectural headquarters.
Presently the sky brightened. Soldiers and townspeople here picked up one of the leaflets to read, while others there picked up another. Soon several clusters of soldiers and civilians gathered to look. A scout quickly snatched one and rushed off to report to Liang Yong. Liang Yong was greatly alarmed and immediately sent an orders officer out of the prefectural headquarters to command the soldiers to guard the camp gate and all barracks, and to strictly hunt down the spy. Xiao Jia-sui had a precious sword hidden on his person. He pushed his way into the crowd to look as well, reading aloud from the paper twice in a loud voice. The soldiers and civilians all stared at each other in astonishment. The orders officer, carrying his commander's orders, rode out on horseback with five or six soldiers following him to relay the command to the various barracks. Xiao Jia-sui rushed forward, gave a great roar, and with one stroke of his sword hacked through the horse's legs. The orders officer toppled from his horse, and with another stroke Xiao Jia-sui chopped off his head. Xiao Jia-sui seized the head in his left hand and brandished his sword in his right, shouting, "All who want to preserve your lives, follow Xiao Jia-sui to kill the bandits!" The soldiers stationed in front of the marshal's headquarters had long known Xiao Jia-sui and understood he was an iron man. In an instant some five or six hundred men rallied around him, forming a single mass. Seeing the soldiers gathering, Xiao Jia-sui again shouted loudly, "Any civilians with courage, come and lend your strength!" His voice rang out for several hundred paces. Then voices answered from all sides. The townspeople snatched up sticks, pulled up thorny branches, and broke off table legs—in the space of a snap of the fingers, there were already five or six thousand people. With a roar of voices, Xiao Jia-sui took the lead and led the crowd in storming the marshal's headquarters. Liang Yong had always been cruel to soldiers and civilians and had whipped and beaten his officers and guards, so the protective troops and officers hated him to the marrow of their bones. The moment they heard the uprising had begun, they all came rushing to help, stormed in, and killed Liang Yong and his entire family. Xiao Jia-sui led the soldiers, civilians, and others out of the marshal's headquarters—by now there were over twenty thousand people. He had Xiao Rang, Pei Xuan, and Jin Da-jian untied from their cangues and their fetters struck off. Xiao Jia-sui chose three strong men to carry Xiao Rang and the other three on their backs. Taking the lead himself, Xiao Jia-sui seized Liang Yong's head and hastened to the North Gate, where he killed the gate commander Ma Qiang, dispersed the gate guards, opened the city gate, and lowered the drawbridge.
At that moment Wu Yong had just arrived at the North Gate, personally supervising the officers and men in their assault on the city, when he heard the shouting within. Then the city gate was opened. He thought the enemy was sallying forth to attack, and quickly ordered his troops to withdraw the distance of three or four arrow shots and form ranks to meet the enemy. He then saw Xiao Jia-sui clutching a head, with three soldiers behind him carrying Xiao Rang and the others, crossing the drawbridge and hurrying forward. Wu Yong was just beginning to be astonished when Xiao Rang and the others called out loudly, "Military Advisor Wu, we truly owe this bold man—he roused the crowd, killed the bandit commander, and rescued us." Wu Yong listened, both startled and delighted. Xiao Jia-sui said to Wu Yong, "Matters are too urgent for formal courtesy. Please, Military Advisor, quickly lead your troops into the city!" Already a number of soldiers and civilians at the drawbridge were shouting in unison, "Please, Song Vanguard Commander, enter the city!" Wu Yong saw that all manner of people were among them, so he gave the order for officers and men to lead their troops into the city, decreeing that anyone who killed a single person without cause would be executed together with his squad. The soldiers defending the north wall saw how matters stood and all threw down their weapons and descended from the wall. The soldiers defending the east, west, and south walls, hearing the news, all bound the defending bandit commanders, threw open the city gates, and welcomed the Song troops in with incense, flowers, lanterns, and candles. Only that fellow Mi Sheng, who was so fierce that no one could get near him, fled out the West Gate and cut his way through the encirclement.
Wu Yong sent a messenger with all haste to report to Song Jiang. Upon receiving the news, Song Jiang's ailments of worrying for the state and weeping for his brothers receded by ninety-nine percent; he was overjoyed and leaping with delight, and together with all the generals he broke camp and set out. The great army arrived at Jingnan city. Song Jiang ascended and sat in the commander's headquarters, pacifying the soldiers and civilians, and rewarding the officers and men. Song Jiang invited Xiao Jiasui to the headquarters, asked his name, and helped him to the seat of honor. Song Jiang bowed his head and bowed, saying: "Sir, your heroic feat in executing the rebels, preserving lives, recovering the city without bloodshed, and saving three of my brothers—Song Jiang ought to bow to you." Xiao Jaisui returned his bows without end, saying: "This is not Xiao's own ability—it is the doing of all the soldiers and people!" When Song Jiang heard this, his admiration grew even greater. Song Jiang and his subordinate officers and assistants all exchanged courtesies. The city's soldiers brought in the captured rebel generals. Song Jiang asked which were willing to surrender, and all were pardoned. For this reason, the whole city erupted in thunderous cheers of joy, and tens of thousands submitted. As it happened, the naval leaders Li Jun and others, commanding the naval fleet, arrived at the Han River and all came to pay their respects. Song Jiang ordered wine to be prepared to entertain Sir Xiao. Song Jiang personally held the cup and urged him to drink, saying: "Sir, with your great talents and abundant virtue, when Song Jiang returns to court and reports to the Emperor in person, you will certainly be promoted with distinction." Xiao Jiasui said: "This is unnecessary. What Xiao did today was not for fame or fortune. Xiao has since youth been uninhibited in conduct, and in manhood has had no reputation in his district—he is a man of limited knowledge and narrow experience. At present, slanderers are highly elevated, and worthy scholars remain unknown. Though one may possess talents matching Sui He or follow a path like that of Xu You, one can never reach the imperial court. Xiao has seen several ambitious heroes who disregard life and death and cross the state's calamities—if in any undertaking there is a single misstep, those who preserve whole bodies and protect wives and children will seize upon it to magnify their shortcomings, and both their lives and families will fall into the hands of treacherous ministers. Like Xiao today, he has no official duties to attend to, and resembles a wild cloud or a crane in the wilderness—what heaven is there that he cannot soar to!" This speech caused all from Song Jiang downward to sigh in admiration. Among those seated, Gongsun Sheng, Lu Zhishen, Wu Song, Yan Qing, Li Jun, Tong Wei, Tong Meng, Dai Zong, Chai Jin, Fan Rui, Wu Zhu, Jiang Jing, and some ten others nodded and savored Sir Xiao's words even more deeply. That evening, when the wine was finished, Xiao Jiasui thanked them and left the headquarters. The next morning, Song Jiang sent Dai Zong to report the victory to Commissioner Chen. Song Jiang went in person to Sir Xiao's residence to pay a special visit, but it was an empty lodging. The next-door paper shop said: "Xiao Jiasui, before dawn this morning, packed his zither, sword, and book satchel, bid farewell to me, and departed—I know not where." A later poet composed a verse praising the virtue of the Xiao Dan lineage:
Xiao Sengda repaired the dike in the rain,
Waves wild and raging—his heart knew not fear.
With sincere devotion he dammed the waters and the work succeeded,
Six ears of grain on one stalk appeared.
His worthy grandson, a hero matching his grandfather,
With a shout commanded the people and smote the rebel chief.
His grace reached the living souls; with wisdom he preserved his own being,
A wild cloud in the wilderness—truly transcendent.
Song Jiang returned to the headquarters and told the assembled chieftains that Xiao Jaisui had drifted away like a cloud. All the generals sighed without exception. In the evening, Dai Zong reported back that the remaining unrecovered prefectures and counties belonging to Wanzhou and Shannan, under the direction of Commissioner Chen and Staff Officer Hou, with Luo Jian, Lin Chong, Hua Rong, and others, had all been pacified. The court had already dispatched several new officials, who had completed their respective handovers. Commissioner Chen had already set out with all the generals and would arrive shortly. Song Jiang and Wu Yong deliberated: once Commissioner Chen arrived to garrison this place, they could raise a great army to destroy the chief rebel. Song Jiang remained in Jingnan for five or six days to recover, and his illness was completely cured. One day, it was reported that Commissioner Chen's troops had arrived. Song Jiang and the others welcomed them into the city. After the courtesies, Commissioner Chen richly rewarded the officers and men of the three armies. Subsequently, Shannan garrison commander Shi Jin and others, having handed over the prefectural affairs to the new officials, also arrived afterward. Song Jiang entrusted the prefectural administration to Commissioner Chen. Song Jiang and the others took leave of Commissioner Chen and led the great army, advancing by both land and water with cavalry alongside, to attack the rebel lair at Nanfeng. At this time, all one hundred and eight heroes were together, joined by the eleven newly surrendered generals from Hebei, including Sun An, with over two hundred thousand troops. Battle after battle was won, military prestige was greatly enhanced, and wherever they went, the rebels surrendered at the sight of their approach. Song Jiang reported the recovered prefectures and counties to Commissioner Chen. Chen Guan dispatched Luo Jian with troops and officers to garrison them.
Song Jiang and his army by land and water drove straight into the territory of Nanfeng. Scouts reported intelligence that the rebel Wang Qing had appointed Li Zhu as grand marshal, who had selected from the local area fifty thousand land and water troops. He had also summoned twenty thousand troops each from the three circuits of Yun'an, Dongchuan, and Ande, all under the command of local puppet generals Liu Yijing, Shangguan Yi, and others. Several dozen fierce generals and one hundred and ten thousand strong soldiers had come to resist them, with Wang Qing personally supervising the campaign. Upon receiving this report, Song Jiang deliberated with Wu Yong: "The rebels have sent out their entire force—they will fight to the death. What strategy shall I use to defeat them?" Wu Yong said: "The art of war comes down to just one phrase: 'deceive them by multiplying our approaches.' Now that all our officers and men are assembled in one place, we should divide them into several routes to attack, so they cannot respond to all of them." Song Jiang followed this counsel and issued orders to divide and deploy the troops and generals.
On the day before, Li Ying, known as Soaring Vulture, and Chai Jin, the Whirlwind, received orders from Song Jiang, the vanguard commander. They led mounted and headed by Shan Tinggui, Wei Dinggong, Shi En, Xue Yong, Mu Chun, and Li Zhong, commanding five thousand troops to escort grain carts along with silk bolts, artillery pieces, and wagons. Following behind the main army, they arrived at a location called Dragon Gate Mountain. At the southern foot of the mountain lay a village surrounded by high earthen mounds on all sides, resembling an earthen fortress, with roads leading in and out on three sides. The inhabitants had left hundreds of thatched and tiled houses empty, having fled to avoid the fighting. That evening, a strong northeast wind arose, and thick clouds spread like spilled ink. Li Ying and Chai Jin, seeing the sky grow dark, feared rain would dampen the grain and ordered the soldiers to remove the doors and push the carts inside the houses. Just as the soldiers were about to cook and rest, Xue Yong, the Sickly Tiger, who was out on patrol with troops, captured a spy and reported to Chai Jin: "After interrogation, the spy confessed that the bandit Mi Sheng is leading ten thousand elite troops to raid and burn our grain tonight at the second watch; they are now hidden in Dragon Gate Mountain." It happened that Dragon Gate Mountain had two cliffs facing each other like gates, with a waterway passable through the middle and dense forests. Upon hearing this, Li Ying said to Chai Jin, "Let me go ahead of the village and wait for those blasted bandits, and slaughter every last one of them." Chai Jin replied, "That Mi Sheng is extremely fierce and must not be fought head-on. Besides, we have too few troops here. Let me employ a small stratagem, using five or six cartloads of artillery and over a hundred cartloads of firewood, to avenge Tang Bin and the others." He then had the spy executed. He ordered the soldiers to load the grain, artillery, and wagons, and told Li Ying to lead three thousand troops, all equipped with bows, crossbows, and fire arrows, to guard the grain carts. At dusk, they all exited the earthen mounds and headed south. Meanwhile, they left behind over a hundred carts of firewood, scattered among the thatched houses and eaves on the southwest, downwind side. They arranged a hundred empty carts in groups of five or six, placing a small amount of grain on top. In various locations, they concealed artillery pieces and laid out dry firewood soaked in sulfur, saltpeter, and nitre. He ordered Shi En, Xue Yong, Mu Chun, and Li Zhong to lead two thousand troops and ambush them at the eastern earthen mound road junction. He ordered Shan Tinggui to lead a thousand cavalry to the road south of the village and wait for the bandits to arrive, all following his instructions precisely. Chai Jin, together with Wei Dinggong, the Divine Fire General, led three hundred infantry, all carrying fire-making equipment and incendiary devices, and climbed the mountain to hide in the dense forest.
When the second watch arrived, the bandit general Mi Sheng indeed came with two subordinate generals, leading over ten thousand troops. The soldiers wore soft armor, the horses' bells were removed, banners were lowered, and drums were silenced as they galloped swiftly to the southern earthen mound entrance. When Shan Tinggui saw the bandit troops approaching, he ordered the soldiers to light torches and engage them in battle. After fighting Mi Sheng for no more than four or five exchanges, Shan Tinggui turned his horse and led his troops in retreat. Mi Sheng was a man of courage but no strategy; he led his troops straight in pursuit. When Xue Yong and Shi En saw the fires raised on the southern road, they ordered Li Zhong and Mu Chun to lead a thousand troops swiftly to the south of the village to block the road junction. By then, the bandit troops were shouting and charging in, expecting to attack from the northeast, upwind side, but found only empty houses with no grain in sight. Mi Sheng led his troops searching in all directions and saw only one or two hundred grain carts on the downwind side, guarded by five or six hundred soldiers, who cried out and scattered upon seeing the bandit troops. Mi Sheng said, "So there isn't much grain after all!" He ordered the soldiers to light torches to look around, and found that among the cart trains, each group had two carts loaded with bolts of silk. The bandit soldiers saw them and rushed to plunder them in disorder. When Mi Sheng urgently tried to stop them, fire arrows and torches were shot and hurled down from the mountain, and the thatched houses and firewood carts all burst into flames. The bandit soldiers shouted and tried to flee, but the artillery fuses had already been ignited, the fire spreading rapidly, striking like thunder. The bandit soldiers, unable to flee fast enough, were killed by the artillery. In the blink of an eye, flames roared and smoke billowed, and one could see:
The wind followed the fire's momentum; the fire rode the wind's might.
A thousand fire arrows darted like golden serpents; ten thousand thunderous blasts shook the flames.
On the summit of Mount Li, it seemed Baosi must have been displaying her valor;
At the head of the Yangtze River, it rivaled Zhou Yu's clever stratagem.
Dense purple mist rose to the sky; flashing red glow pierced the earth.
The crackling and popping never ceased, just like firecrackers on New Year's Eve.
At that moment, the fire raged fiercely and the artillery thundered, with a sound as if heaven were being shattered and the earth split apart. In an instant, over a hundred thatched houses were reduced to balls of smoke and chunks of fire. Mi Sheng was killed by the artillery, more than half of the bandit troops were slain, and countless others were burned beyond recognition. Then Shan Tinggui, Shi En, and others pursued and attacked from three directions. Both subordinate generals were killed. Of the ten thousand troops, only a little over a thousand managed to climb out over the earthen mounds and escape with their lives. At daybreak, Chai Jin and the others rejoined their forces with Li Ying and escorted the grain to the main camp. Commander Song Jiang was just holding a council in his tent, dispatching troops to attack the bandits, when the cavalry were seen tethering their horses and the infantry arranging their weapons, just as the verse describes:
Banners spread red like a sky full of rosy clouds;
Swords and blades gleamed white like a thousand miles of snow.
How exactly Song Jiang and the others fought—that will be told in the next chapter.
