Chapter 105
Wang Qing and the woman Duan Sanliang fought Liao Li for six or seven exchanges. Wang Qing spotted an opening, struck him down with his saber, and Duan Sanliang rushed up and finished him with another blow. Liao Li had been a bandit for half his life, and now it was nothing but a spring dream! Wang Qing raised his saber and roared, “Anyone who refuses to submit will share Liao Li's fate!” When the bandits saw Liao Li killed, none dared resist. They threw down their weapons and knelt in submission. Wang Qing led his men up the mountain and into the stronghold. By now the east was growing pale. The mountain was ringed on all sides by natural stone chambers shaped like houses, which was why it was called Fang Mountain, under the jurisdiction of Fangzhou. That day Wang Qing settled all the women and children, counted the bandits, and took stock of the stronghold's stores of grain and fodder, gold and silver, precious goods, silk, and cloth. They slaughtered oxen and horses, gave the bandits a great feast, and drank wine to celebrate. The men then acclaimed Wang Qing as their chief. They set about forging weapons and training the bandits to meet the government troops. But no more of this.
To return to the events of that night: the headmen, soldiers, and runners Fangzhou had sent to arrest Wang Qing were scattered by Wang Qing and his band. Those who escaped fled back to the prefecture and reported to Prefect Zhang Guxing, saying, “Wang Qing and his men were warned in advance and fought the troops. The headman and the scout Huang Da were all killed. The villains have fled west.” Zhang Guxing was greatly alarmed. The next morning he counted the losses: more than thirty soldiers killed and over forty wounded. That same day Zhang Guxing held a council with the garrison officers of the prefecture and ordered additional constabulary troops and garrison soldiers to pursue and capture them. But the bandits were fierce, and the government troops suffered more losses. The Fang Mountain bandits grew daily in number, and Wang Qing and his men came down the mountain to plunder. Seeing the bandits' power swelling, Zhang Guxing on one hand issued orders to the subordinate counties to defend their territories and dispatch troops to join in the suppression; on the other hand he conferred again with Hu Youwei, the Prefectural Garrison Military Supervisor, on a campaign to destroy the bandits. Hu Youwei mustered the troops in his camp and chose a day to set out. But suddenly the soldiers in both camps raised a clamor. For two months they had received no pay or rice, and now they were sent to fight with empty bellies—how could they kill bandits? When Zhang Guxing heard of the disturbance, he had to distribute a month's pay and rice first. But this very distribution only inflamed the soldiers further. How so? The officials in charge had never in peacetime shown the soldiers care or discipline; only when they raised a clamor did they finally issue their pay and rations, which had already bred arrogance in the soldiers' hearts. There was one more laughable thing: today, with trouble at hand, the customary deductions were taken just as severely as on any ordinary day. The soldiers had endured so much skimming in the past that they now vented it all at once. The military mood was turbulent; in a burst of fury they killed Hu Youwei. Seeing the situation going badly, Zhang Guxing merely guarded his official seal and fled beforehand. With no one in charge of the city, local ruffians joined the mutinous troops and set fire to and plundered the homes of honest citizens. When the bandit Wang Qing saw the uprising in the city, he seized the moment and led his men to attack Fangzhou. The mutinous soldiers and the rabble of criminals instead submitted to the bandit chief. Thus Wang Qing's ambition was realized, and he seized Fangzhou for his lair. As for Zhang Guxing, in the end he could not escape and was killed as well.
Wang Qing plundered the treasury and grain stores of Fangzhou, and sent Li Zhu, Duan Er, and Duan Wu to set up recruitment banners at Fangshan Stockade and various other places, purchasing horses and enlisting soldiers, accumulating fodder and storing grain. The surrounding villages and towns were all raided. Idle troublemakers and criminals flocked to join him. At that time, Gong Duan and Gong Zheng, who had previously been accused by Huang Dada and lost all their property, heard that Wang Qing was recruiting and also came to join the band. The neighboring prefectures and counties could only defend their own cities—who would dare send troops to suppress the brigands? Within two months, the outlaws had assembled over twenty thousand men and captured the three nearby cities of Shangjin County, Zhushan County, and Yunxiang County. The neighboring prefectures and counties reported to the court, which ordered troops to be dispatched from the region to suppress them. But the Song soldiers were poorly supplied and untrained; the soldiers did not fear their generals, and the generals did not know their soldiers. When word of the bandits came, the reports at first made them sound so ferocious that the troops lost heart and the people were terrified. Yet when it came time to face the enemy in battle, the generals were cowardly and the soldiers were weak and starving. How could they withstand Wang Qing and his bandits, who fought with no regard for their lives? The government troops were routed every time. Thus Wang Qing's power grew ever greater, and he captured Nanfeng Prefecture as well. Later, officers were sent from the Eastern Capital, but they had either bribed Cai Jing and Tong Guan or Yang Jian and Gao Qiu. Once these ministers received their bribes, they cared nothing for whether the officers were incompetent or not. The officers, having spent their money, seized their authority and freely embezzled military provisions, killed commoners to claim credit for killing bandits, and allowed their soldiers to loot and harass the populace—in effect driving the common people to join the rebels. From this point on, the rebels' power gradually grew, and they marched southward. Li Zhu offered a strategy: since he was a native of Jingnan, he would disguise himself as a fortune-teller, enter the city, secretly recruit villainous youths and wicked ruffians, and attack the city from within and without. They captured Jingnan in this way. Wang Qing then appointed Li Zhu as his chief strategist and styled himself "King of Chu." Pirates and bandits from across the land came to join him. Within three or four years, he had seized six military prefectures of the Song. Wang Qing then built a palace, inner gardens, and halls of state in Nanfeng, adopted a reign title, and set up a puppet government with civil and military offices, ministries, and courts, complete with inner ministers and outer generals. He appointed Li Zhu as Chief Strategist and Prime Minister, Fang Han as Grand Councilor, Duan Er as Grand General of State Protection, Duan Wu as Grand Marshal of State Assistance, Fan Quan as Commander of the Palace Guard, Gong Duan as Commissioner of Pacification, and Gong Zheng as Commissioner of Transport, in charge of disbursements, revenues, and accounting. Qiu Xiang was made Commander of the Imperial Camp. Duan Shi was made his concubine. From the first year of the Xuanhe era, when the rebellion began, to the spring of the fifth year of Xuanhe—at which time Song Jiang and his men were campaigning against Tian Hu in Hebei, stymied at Huguan Pass—Wang Qing in Huai West had broken through Yun'an Commandery and Wanzhou, bringing the total of military prefectures he had seized to eight. The eight were: Nanfeng, Jingnan, Shannan, Yun'an, Ande, Dongchuan, Wanzhou, and Xijing. These eight prefectures governed a total of eighty-six counties. Wang Qing also built a traveling palace in Yun'an and appointed Shi Jun as garrison commander to defend Yun'an Commandery.
Earlier, when Wang Qing had ordered Liu Min and others to attack Wanzhou, Wanzhou being close to the Eastern Capital, Cai Jing and the others could not conceal the matter from the emperor. They reported it to the Daojun Emperor, who ordered Cai You and Tong Guan to suppress Wang Qing and relieve Wanzhou. But Cai You and Tong Guan exercised no discipline over their troops and cruelly mistreated their soldiers, so the army's morale fell apart. Liu Min and the others routed them decisively, and Wanzhou fell. The Eastern Capital was thrown into a panic. Cai You and Tong Guan, fearing punishment, kept the matter hidden from the emperor alone. The rebel generals Liu Min and Lu Cheng, having defeated Cai You and Tong Guan, then besieged Luzhou and Xiangzhou. Fortunately, Song Jiang and his men had completed their pacification of Hebei and returned to court, where they received a new imperial edict to campaign against Huai West. Truly, they had no time to sit—their horses had no time to rest! Leading a great army of over two hundred thousand men, they marched south. They had just crossed the Yellow River when the ministries sent an urgent dispatch ordering Provincial Governor Chen, Song Jiang, and their forces at once to hurry to the relief of Luzhou and Xiangzhou. Song Jiang and his men pressed on despite the summer heat, their horses drenched in sweat, passing through Suxian and Sishui without disturbing the people in the slightest. The great army reached the borders of Yangzhai Prefecture. When the rebels heard that Song Jiang's forces had arrived, they lifted the sieges of both Luzhou and Xiangzhou and withdrew.
At that time, Zhang Qiong, Qiong Ying, and Ye Qing, having witnessed the execution of Tian Hu, received imperial grace and were ordered by edict to assist Song Jiang in the campaign against Wang Qing. Zhang Qiong and the others had left the Eastern Capital and had been in Yingchang Prefecture for over half a month. Hearing that the vanguard under Song Jiang had arrived, the three came to the army to welcome him. After paying their respects, they recounted in full the honors and titles they had received. Song Jiang and the others praised them highly. Song Jiang ordered Zhang Qiong and the others to serve in the army.
Song Jiang asked Provincial Governor Chen, Military Advisor Hou, and Military Commissioner Luo to station themselves in the city of Yangzhai, while the main army did not enter the city. Song Jiang issued orders for the entire army to encamp in the dense, shady woods of Fangcheng Mountain to escape the summer heat. Since many soldiers had marched a thousand *li* and were suffering from heat exhaustion and fatigue, he ordered An Daoquan to prepare medicines to treat the troops. He also ordered the soldiers thatched shelters to be built to house the horses, and sent Huangfu Duan to tend to them, shearing their manes. Wu Yong said, "Our army is encamped in the thick woods—I fear the enemy may use fire against us." Song Qing replied, "I want him to use fire." Song Jiang then ordered the soldiers to go up to the high ridge of the mountain, under the shade of the trees, and build a small shelter of bamboo and thatch. The former Hebei general Qiao Daoqing understood his intention and came to report to Song Jiang, saying, "I am grateful for the General's great kindness and wish to offer my humble services today." Song Jiang was overjoyed and secretly gave Qiao Daoqing his orders, and Qiao Daoqing went to the mountain shelter. Song Jiang selected thirty thousand of the strongest soldiers: he ordered Zhang Qiong and Qiong Ying to lead ten thousand troops and lie in ambush on the eastern foothills; he ordered Sun An and Bian Xiang also to lead ten thousand troops and lie in ambush on the western foothills. "When you hear the thunderclap bomb from our central army, charge out together." The grain and fodder were all piled on the southern flat foothills, with Li Ying and Chai Jin leading five thousand soldiers to guard them.
Once the deployment had been settled, Gongsun Sheng suddenly said: "Brother, your plan is excellent! But in this sweltering heat, the soldiers are exhausted from marching back and forth. Should the enemy strike with elite forces, even though our army outnumbers theirs ten to one, we would surely be defeated. Allow this humble priest to employ a minor art to first rid everyone of their oppressive discomfort. When the troops and horses are cool and refreshed, they will naturally grow strong and vigorous." Having spoken, he took up his sword and began his ritual, his feet treading upon the characters *Kui* and *Gang*, his left hand forming the Thunder Seal and his right hand the Sword Gesture. He concentrated his spirit and gazed intently, drawing a breath of vital energy from the direction of *Xun*, then recited an incantation once. In an instant, a cool breeze rustled forth, and dark clouds rose gradually, billowing out from the mountain ridges and spreading across the entire Fangcheng Mountain. Over two hundred thousand troops and horses were bathed in the cool, refreshing air. Beyond this mountain alone, the blazing sun still melted gold and iron as before, cicadas chirped chaotically, and birds hid themselves away. Song Jiang and all the men below were overjoyed and gave thanks for Gongsun Sheng's divine merit and holy power. This continued for six or seven days, and with An Daoquan healing the men and Huangfu Duan tending the horses, the soldiers and horses gradually grew strong and healthy—of this, no more need be said.
Now, let us speak of Wanzhou's defending commander Liu Min, a man of considerable stratagems among the rebels, whom they called "Liu Zhibo." He learned through reconnaissance that Song Jiang's troops had encamped in the dense mountain forests to escape the heat. He said: "This band of Song Jiang's are nothing but lake-bandits and grassland brigands after all. They understand nothing of military science, and that is why they cannot accomplish great matters. Wait until I employ a minor scheme, and I shall see to it that half of those two hundred thousand troops are scorched to a crisp!" He immediately issued orders and selected five thousand agile soldiers, each equipped with fire arrows, fire bombs, and torches. He also prepared two thousand war chariots, loaded with dry reeds and kindling, as well as sulfur, saltpeter, and other combustible materials. Each chariot was to be pushed by four men. It was now mid-July, early autumn weather. Liu Min led four lieutenant generals—Lu Cheng, Zheng Jie, Kou Meng, and Gu Cen—along with ten thousand iron cavalry, the men wearing soft armor and the horses' bells removed, to follow in support. Liu Min left subordinate commanders Han Zhe, Ban Ze, and others to defend the city. Liu Min and his forces departed the city at dusk, and just then a great south wind arose. Liu Min was overjoyed and said: "These men of Song Jiang's are fated to be defeated!" The rebel forces marched on until the third watch before arriving two *li* south of Fangcheng Mountain, when suddenly fog filled the valleys. Liu Min said: "Heaven aids our success!" He ordered the soldiers in the rear to beat drums and shout to boost morale. He commanded the five thousand soldiers to fire their fire arrows, fire bombs, and torches into the densest parts of the mountain forest and burn it all. He ordered Kou Meng and Bi Sheng to urge the chariot-pushers to set fire to the fire-chariots and send them toward the grain stores at the foot of the mountain. The men were pressing forward with fierce courage when suddenly they all cried out: "Bitter fate! Bitter fate!" And then a most extraordinary thing occurred! The south wind had been raging, but in an instant—how could it have turned into a north wind? Then a thunderous crack was heard from the mountain, as Qiao Daoqing employed his art of Returning the Wind and Reversing the Fire. Those fire arrows and torches all flew back toward the rebel formation to the south, like a thousand golden serpents and fiery dragons, their blazing flames sweeping upon the rebel soldiers. The rebels could not dodge in time and were all burned beyond recognition. At that moment, the Song army had four lines of a jesting verse, mocking Liu Min alone, which read:
> "Military affairs are hard to fathom,
> Yet the rebel schemes in vain.
> He set fires only to burn his own army—
> A fine 'Liu Zhibo,' this one!"
At that time, Vanguard Commander Song Jiang ordered Ling Zhen to fire the signal cannon. The shot flew up into the sky with a thunderous boom. From the east, Zhang Qing and Qiongying led their forces in a charge; from the west, Sun An and Bian Xiang did likewise. The rebels suffered a crushing defeat: Lu Cheng was cleaved in two by a single sword-stroke from Sun An; Zheng Qie was struck from his horse by a stone from Qiongying, and Zhang Qing finished him with a single spear-thrust; Gu Cen was pierced dead by Bian Xiang; Kou Meng was killed in the chaos of battle. Of twenty-three thousand troops, more than half were lost to fire and sword, and the rest scattered in all directions. The two thousand chariots were utterly consumed by flames. Only Liu Min, together with three or four hundred defeated soldiers, fled forward to Wanzhou. The Song army did not have a single blade of straw burned, nor did they lose a single soldier. They captured many horses, suits of armor, golden drums, and battle standards. Zhang Qing, Sun An, and the others returned in victory to the mountain fortress to report their success. Sun An presented Lu Cheng's severed head; Zhang Qing and Qiongying presented Zheng Jie's severed head; Bian Xiang presented Gu Cen's severed head. Song Jiang rewarded each of them for their merit and recorded Qiao Daoqing as having rendered the foremost service, followed in order of merit by Zhang Qing, Qiongying, Sun An, and Bian Xiang.
Wu Yong said, "Your lordship's brilliant stratagem has already struck terror into the enemy's hearts. But Wanzhou is a place where mountains and waters wind and meander, where hills and plains are rich and fertile—a land called an inland sea. If the rebels dispatch troops and garrison it with a strong force, it will be difficult to take quickly. Now the autumn wind has driven away the summer heat, and the cool dew brings freshness. Our horses and men are all in fine condition. We should take advantage of our greatly boosted morale and the city's weakness, attack it swiftly, and we are certain to capture it. However, we must divide our forces and station them to the north and south, to prevent rebel reinforcements from breaking through."
Song Jiang approved, and following the plan, he issued orders: Guan Sheng, Qin Ming, Yang Zhi, Huang Xin, Sun Li, Xuan Zan, Hao Siwen, Chen Da, Yang Chun, and Zhou Tong were to lead thirty thousand troops and encamp to the east of Wanzhou, to guard against rebel reinforcements coming from the south. Lin Chong, Huo Yanzhu, Dong Ping, Suo Chao, Han Tao, Peng Qi, Shan Tinggui, Wei Dingguo, Ouyang Peng, and Deng Fei were to lead thirty thousand troops and encamp to the west of Wanzhou, to block rebel forces coming from the north. The generals obeyed the orders and set about mustering their troops.
At this time, the seventeen former generals who had surrendered from Hebei—Sun An and others—came forward together and reported: "We have been received by the Vanguard General and deeply feel his generous courtesy. Now we wish to serve as the vanguard and attack the city, to repay this kindness in some small measure." Song Jiang assented and ordered Zhang Qing and Qiong Ying to command Sun An and the other seventeen officers, with fifty thousand troops, as the vanguard. The seventeen were: Sun An, Ma Ling, Bian Xiang, Shan Qizhi, Tang Bin, Wen Zhongrong, Cui Ye, Jin Ding, Huang Yue, Mei Yu, Jin Zhen, Bi Sheng, Pan Xun, Yang Fang, Feng Sheng, Hu Bi, and Ye Qing. Thereupon Zhang Qing, obeying the order, led his officers and troops on the march toward Wanzhou.
Song Jiang, Lu Junyi, Wu Yong, and others commanded the remaining officers and main army. They broke camp, left Fangshan Mountain, and advanced southward, encamping ten *li* from Wanzhou. They ordered Li Yun, Tao Long, and Tao Zongwang to oversee the construction of siege equipment and deliver it to Zhang Qing's army for use. Zhang Qing and his forces surrounded Wanzhou so tightly that not a drop of water could have passed through.
The defending general in the city, Liu Min, had been the one who fell for Song Jiang's ruse that night and barely escaped with his life. Upon reaching Wanzhou, he immediately sent men south to Wang Qing's headquarters at Nanfeng to report, and also dispatched documents to neighboring prefectures and counties requesting reinforcements. Now that Song's troops had surrounded the city, he ordered only that the city be held firmly and that they wait for reinforcements before sallying forth. Song's troops attacked the city for six or seven days in a row, but the walls were strong and they could not take it quickly.
Wanzhou bordered Ruzhou to the north. The rebel general Zhang Shou led twenty thousand reinforcements from there, but Lin Chong and the others killed their commander Zhang Shou, and the remaining officers and soldiers all scattered in defeat. On the same day, reinforcements arrived from Anchang, Yiyang, and other counties south of Wanzhou, but Guan Sheng and the others routed the rebel forces and captured their generals Bai Ren and Zhang Yi, sending them to Song Jiang's main camp, where they were executed. Many were killed or captured in both engagements. By this time, Li Yun and the others had completed the siege equipment. Sun An, Ma Ling, and the others worked in unison, ordering soldiers to carry earth in sacks and heap it up on all sides against the city walls. They also selected brave and agile soldiers to use flying bridges and pulley-wheeled ladders to cross ditches, moats, and ponds. The soldiers all surged forward with valor and scaled the walls, and so Wanzhou was taken. The defending general Liu Min was captured alive; more than twenty assistant officers were killed, over five thousand soldiers were slain, and ten thousand surrendered. Song Jiang and his main army entered the city. Liu Min was executed and his head displayed, and notices were posted to pacify the people. The merits of Guan Sheng, Lin Chong, Zhang Qing, Sun An, and the other generals were duly recorded. Messengers were sent to Prefect Chen in Yangdi Prefecture to report the victory and to request that Prefect Chen and his staff relocate to Wanzhou. Prefect Chen was overjoyed at the news and immediately came to Wanzhou along with his advisor Hou and Marshal Luo. Song Jiang and the others went outside the city walls to welcome them inside. Prefect Chen praised Song Jiang and his generals for their achievements—of this, no more need be said.
Song Jiang managed military affairs in Wanzhou for more than ten days. By this time it was the first ten days of the eighth month, and the summer heat was gradually receding. Song Jiang discussed with Wu Yong, "Which city should we take next?"
Wu Yong said, "South of here lies Shannan Army. To its south it reaches Hubei and Hunan; to its north it controls the passes of the Central Plains. It is the vital junction between Chu and Sichuan. We should take this city first, to split the rebel forces."
Song Jiang said, "The military adviser's words are exactly what I intended." He therefore left Hua Rong, Lin Chong, Xuan Zan, Hao Siwen, Lü Fang, and Guo Sheng to assist Prefect Chen and others in governing fifty thousand troops to garrison Wanzhou. Prefect Chen also left the "Sage Scribe" Xiao Rang behind, and ordered the naval commanders Li Jun and seven other officers to take command of the water fleet and proceed via the Mi River to the Han River north of Shannan Army to assemble there.
Song Jiang divided the land forces into three columns. He took leave of Prefect Chen and led his many officers and one hundred and hundred and fifty thousand troops, leaving Wanzhou and racing toward Shannan Army. Truly it was:
*Ten thousand horses gallop—the heavens tremble;*
*A thousand soldiers leap forward—even ghosts grieve.*
How the Song forces attacked and took Shannan—that will be told in the next chapter.
