Chapter 105: The Embroidered Guards Raid the Mansion of Duke Ning; The Imperial Inspector Impeaches the Prefecture of Ping'an
Just as Jia Zheng was hosting a feast, Lai Da came hurriedly into the Rongxi Hall and reported to him: "Master Zhao of the Embroidered Uniform Guard has come to pay a call, accompanied by several other officials. I was about to get their calling cards, but Master Zhao said, 'We are such old friends, there's no need for that.' He's already getting out of his carriage and coming in. Please, my lord, go with the young masters to receive him at once."
Jia Zheng thought to himself, "I've had no dealings with this Master Zhao. Why should he come here? I already have guests. It would be inconvenient to keep him, but it would be equally awkward to turn him away." While he was still turning the matter over in his mind, Jia Lian said, "Uncle, go quickly! If you keep deliberating, the man will be inside before you know it."
Even as he spoke, a servant from the inner gate came rushing in to announce, "Master Zhao has already passed through the second gate."
Jia Zheng and the others hurried forward to greet him. They saw Master Zhao approaching with a smile on his face but saying nothing, making straight for the main hall. Behind him followed five or six officials—some they recognized, some they didn't—but none of them uttered a word. Jia Zheng and his companions, uncertain what this meant, could only follow and offer them seats. Among the assembled guests, some who knew Master Zhao saw that he held his chin high and paid little attention to anyone. He merely took Jia Zheng's hand and exchanged a few polite pleasantries with a smile. Those who sensed something amiss either slipped into the inner rooms or stood at attention with their hands at their sides.
Jia Zheng was just about to engage in conversation with a smile when a servant came rushing in with a frightened look and announced, "The Prince of Xiping has arrived!"
Jia Zheng hastened to receive him, and already the Prince had entered. Master Zhao stepped forward quickly and knelt to pay his respects, then said, "Since Your Highness is now here, the officials who accompanied you should take guards and secure both the front and back gates."
The various officials acknowledged the order and went out.
Realizing that something was gravely wrong, Jia Zheng and the others hastily knelt to greet the Prince. The Prince of Xiping raised them with both hands, smiling cheerfully as he said, "I would not presume to intrude without good cause. I come by imperial decree on official business, and require Jia She to receive the edict. Since the feast in the hall has not yet concluded and there are many guests present, which would be inconvenient, I must ask all your friends and relatives from outside the household to disperse for now, leaving only members of this household to await further orders."
Master Zhao replied, "While this is Your Highness's gracious consideration, in matters concerning the East Mansion, this Prince is known for conducting affairs with the utmost rigor—he has probably already ordered the gates sealed."
The guests, understanding that this involved both mansions, were desperate to escape. But the Prince said with a smile, "Please, all of you go. Send someone to escort you out and tell the officers of the Embroidered Uniform Guard that these are all friends and relatives—there is no need to search them. Let them pass quickly."
When the guests heard this, they fled like the wind, one after another. Only Jia She, Jia Zheng, and the rest of their party remained, their faces the color of clay, their bodies trembling all over.
Before long, a great number of runners poured in and took up positions at every gate. Not a single person in the household, high or low, could take a step out of place.
Master Zhao then turned with a changed expression and said to the Prince, "Please, Your Highness, read the edict so that we may proceed."
The runners, meanwhile, rolled up their sleeves and braced themselves, waiting only for the edict.
The Prince of Xiping said slowly, "This prince has received an imperial decree commanding him to lead Zhao Quan of the Embroidered Uniform Guard to inspect Jia She's household property."
When Jia She and the others heard this, they all prostrated themselves on the ground.
The Prince stood above them and declared, "The edict reads: 'Jia She has consorted with officials outside the court, abused his power to oppress the weak, and been ungracious toward Our favor, bringing shame upon the virtue of his ancestors. He is hereby stripped of his hereditary title. Respect this.'"
Master Zhao called out repeatedly, "Seize Jia She—the rest are to be kept under guard!"
At that moment, present in the hall were Jia She, Jia Zheng, Jia Lian, Jia Zhen, Jia Rong, Qiang, Jia Zhi, and Jia Lan. Baoyu, having pretended to be ill, was carrying on at the Dowager's quarters; Jia Huan, being someone who rarely appeared in company, was not there. So only those present were taken into custody.
Master Zhao then ordered his own servants: "Summon all the officials and have the runners search each room separately, making a written inventory as they go."
This order struck terror into every member of the household, high and low, who looked at one another in dismay. But the runners and servants rubbed their hands together with glee, ready to begin their work in every quarter.
The Prince of Xiping said, "I understand that the elder Master Jia and the younger Master Jia maintain separate kitchens though they live in the same compound. In accordance with the edict, we should inspect Jia She's property, and meanwhile seal up the other rooms. We shall report to the throne and await further instructions."
Master Zhao rose and said, "May I report to Your Highness: Jia She and Jia Zheng have never formally divided the family property. I understand that Jia Lian, Jia She's nephew, currently manages all household affairs. We cannot therefore avoid a thorough search."
The Prince of Xiping heard this but said nothing.
Master Zhao then said, "Jia Lian and Jia She's residences will need to be searched under my personal supervision."
The Prince said, "No need for haste. First send word to the inner quarters and ask the ladies to withdraw before we begin the search. It is not too late."
Scarcely had he finished speaking when old Zhao's servants and runners had already seized servants of the household to guide them, and they scattered in every direction to begin their search.
The Prince barked an order: "No rough treatment! I shall conduct the inspection myself." As he spoke, he rose slowly and prepared to depart, adding, "None of my men are to lay a hand on anything. All of you will stand here and wait. When I return, we shall review the inventory together."
Even then, an official of the Embroidered Uniform Guard knelt and reported, "Among the inner apartments we have found imperial robes and garments, as well as numerous items whose use is forbidden to commoners. We did not dare to move them and have come to seek Your Highness's instructions."
A moment later, another group came to intercept the Prince and reported, "In the east wing, we have found two boxes of land and property deeds and another box of promissory notes—all of them bearing unlawfully exorbitant interest."
Old Zhao said, "What flagrant usury! Everything should indeed be confiscated! Please, Your Highness, be seated and allow me to have it all seized and then await your further instructions."
As he spoke, the Prince's chief steward came to report: "The guards at the gate have sent word that His Majesty has specially dispatched the Prince of Beijing here to read an edict. He requests that you go to receive him."
When Master Zhao heard this, he was inwardly delighted and said to myself, "What bad luck—I've been stuck with this sour prince. Now that the other one has arrived, I can show my authority." Even as he thought this, he went out to greet him.
Behold the Prince of Beijing had already arrived in the great hall. He stood facing outward and announced, "An imperial decree! Zhao Quan of the Embroidered Guards Bureau, attend and receive the edict." He read: "By His Majesty's command: 'Let the officers of the Embroidered Guards take only Jia She into custody for interrogation. The remainder are to be handed over to the Prince of Xiping for investigation in accordance with the decree. Respect this.'" The Prince of Xiping received the order with the greatest delight. He then sat down with the Prince of Beijing and instructed Director Zhao to take Jia She away to the yamen. Those inside who had been conducting the search, upon hearing that the Prince of Beijing had arrived, all came out together. When they learned that Director Zhao had departed, they were thoroughly crestfallen and could do nothing but stand in attendance awaiting orders. The Prince of Beijing then selected two honest bureau officials and some ten elderly runners, and dismissed all the rest. The Prince of Xiping said, "I was just having words with old Zhao. Fortunately Your Highness arrived with the decree, or we should have suffered a great deal here." The Prince of Beijing replied, "When I heard in court that His Majesty had commanded Your Highness to search the Jia residence, I felt quite assured that there would be no cruel treatment here. I did not expect old Zhao to be such a scoundrel. But I do not know where Zheng Lao and Baoyu are now, and I wonder how things have gone inside." The people reported, "Jia Zheng and the others are being held in the lower rooms. Inside, everything has already been thrown into utter confusion by the search." The Prince of Xiping then ordered the bureau officials, "Bring Jia Zheng here quickly for questioning." Jia Zheng was brought forward. He knelt and paid his respects, and could not help weeping as he begged for mercy. The Prince of Beijing rose and took him by the hand, saying, "Set your mind at ease, Zheng Lao." He then explained the contents of the decree. Jia Zheng was overwhelmed with gratitude. He turned to the north and kowtowed in thanks for the Emperor's kindness, then came back to await further orders. The Prince said, "Zheng Lao, while old Zhao was here, the runners reported that there were prohibited articles and promissory notes bearing excessive interest. We could not conceal these. The prohibited articles were originally prepared for the Imperial Consort's use; if we make a declaration, there should be no difficulty. But as for the loan notes, we must think of some way to deal about it. For the present, Zheng Lao, you should take the officials and honestly present all the property belonging to the She household, and that will be the end of the matter. You must on no account conceal anything further, thereby bringing guilt upon yourself." Jia Zheng replied, "This guilty official dare not. But this guilty official's grandfather's estate has never been divided; each person simply considers whatever is in his own dwelling as his own property." The two Princes said, "That does not matter. Simply hand over everything that belongs to the She side." They also instructed the officials to carry out their orders and on no account to cause wanton disturbance. The officials took their orders and departed.
Meanwhile, in the Dowager's quarters, the ladies were having a family feast. Lady Wang was saying, "Baoyu is not going out, for fear his father might be angered." Xifeng, ill as she was, wheezed and said, "I don't think Baoyu is afraid of people. He sees that there are already plenty of guests being entertained out front, so it makes sense that he should be here to look after things. If His Lordship should remember that someone is missing inside to attend to matters, and if you, my lady, were to present our young Brother Bao, wouldn't that be splendid?" The Dowager laughed, "This girl Feng is at death's door, and yet her tongue is still as sharp and clever as ever." Just as they were in the midst of cheerful talk, they heard someone from Lady Xing's side come rushing in, shouting all the way, "Old Ancestress, my lady, it's—it's terrible! Ever so many men wearing boots and hats—str—strongboxes!—they've come, turning everything upside down and ransacking everything to take things away." The Dowager and the others were stupefied. Then they saw Ping'er, her hair hanging loose, pulling Qiaojie and weeping as she came in. "It's terrible! I was just having a meal with the little mistress when I saw Wang Lai, tied up, brought in. He said, 'Miss, please go in quickly and tell the ladies to retire. A prince is coming in to search the property.' I was so alarmed that I was just going into the rooms to fetch the important things when a whole crowd of people pushed and shoved me out. We must quickly pack whatever we need to wear or take with us." Lady Wang and Lady Xing, upon hearing this, were utterly terrified and knew not what to do. They saw only Xifering, who had first listened with her eyes wide open, then fell backward and dropped dead to the ground. The Dowager, before she had even heard it all, was so frightened that tears streamed down her face and she could not utter a word. The whole household was in an uproar, pulling at one person and dragging at another, when they heard voices shouting in rapid succession, "Tell the ladies inside to retire! The Prince is coming in!"
Poor Baochai and Baoyu, having no idea what to do, saw the maids and old women on the ground dragging and pulling at one another in chaos, when Jia Lian came rushing in, panting, "It's all right! It's all right! Fortunately the Prince has saved us!" The people were just about to question him when Jia Lian saw Xifeng lying dead on the ground. He wept and cried out in distress, and was also terrified that the old lady had been frightened to death, so that he was beside himself with grief. It was only thanks to Ping'er that Xifering was revived and helped to her feet. The Dowager too came to, weeping until her breath was faint and her spirit was dim, lying on the bed. Li Wan did her best to comfort her. Then Jia Lian, having collected himself, explained the kindness shown by the two Princes. He was afraid that if the Dowager and Lady Xing learned that Jia She had been taken into custody, they would be frightened to death, so for the time being he dared not tell them plainly. He could only go out and attend to the affairs of his own household.
No sooner had he entered the doorway than he found the trunks flung open and the wardrobes broken into, their contents plundered halfway clean. At this sight his eyes bulged with despair, and he stood shedding tears in a daze. Hearing voices calling outside, he had no choice but to come out. He saw Jia Zheng and the officials cataloguing objects as one of them reported: “Gold jewelry, one hundred and twenty-three pieces, all with complete sets of precious stones. Thirteen strings of pearls. Two plates of pale gold. Two pairs of gold bowls. Two gold ladles. Forty gold spoons. Eighty large silver bowls. Twenty silver trays. One ring-belt of white jade. Twelve bolts of yellow satin. Five thousand two hundred taels of full-weight silver. Fifty taels of pure gold. Seven thousand strings of cash.” Every movable object was carefully nailed down and registered, and the Rongguo Mansion itself was itemized in full, along with its title-deeds for land and houses, and the family’s documents and correspondence, all of which were sealed up. Jia Lian, standing nearby, had been listening in secret, but since none of his own belongings were being reported, he felt uneasy. Then he heard the two princes ask Jia Zheng: “Among the confiscated property there are promissory notes that clearly constitute usurious extortion. Who was responsible for this? You must tell us the truth, Sir Zheng.” Jia Zheng, hearing this, knelt on the ground and knocked his head: “The criminal truly did not manage the household affairs; he knows nothing of these matters. You must ask my nephew, Jia Lian, to learn the truth.” Jia Lian hurried forward and knelt down, reporting: “Since this box of documents was searched out in this servant’s own room, how can I claim ignorance? I only beg Your Highnesses for mercy—my uncle knew nothing about it.” The two princes said: “Your father has already been found guilty, and his case can only be handled together with this one. It is only right that you acknowledge it now. Very well—let Jia Lian be placed under guard. Let the rest be collected and stored inside the mansion. Sir Zheng, you must wait carefully for the imperial decree. We will go in now to report back to the Emperor. The officials here will keep watch.” With that, they mounted their sedan-chairs and departed. Jia Zheng and the others knelt to see them off at the inner gate. Prince Bejing raised a hand and said: “Set your mind at ease.” His face bore a look of great compassion.
At this moment Jia Zheng’s soul had only just returned to him; he was still in a daze. Jia Lan then said, “Grandfather, please go inside and look in on Grandmother, then we can think of a way to find out what has happened in the Eastern Mansion.” Jia Zheng hastily rose and went inside. He saw the women of every gate in a state of confusion, not knowing what would become of them. Jia Zheng had no heart to make inquiries; he went straight to the Dowager’s room. There, every face was streaked with tears. Lady Wang, Baoyu, and the others surrounded the Dowager in utter silence, all weeping. Only Lady Xing was sobbing in a heap. Seeing Jia Zheng enter, they all said, “It’s all right! It’s all right!” and told the old lady, “The Master has come back perfectly safe. Please set your mind at ease, Mother.” The Dowager, barely breathing, opened her eyes a crack and said, “My child—I never thought I would see you again!” Before she finished speaking, she burst into a loud wail. At that, everyone in the room wept without restraint. Jia Zheng, fearing the weeping would exhaust his mother, checked his tears and said, “Set your mind at ease, Mother. The matter was indeed serious, but thanks to the Heavenly Grace of His Majesty and the kindness of the two princes, there has been the most generous consideration. The Elder Master is only being detained for the time being; once the matter is clarified, His Majesty may yet show further mercy. For now, nothing more in the house has been touched.” The Dowager, seeing that Jia She was absent, was stricken with grief again. Jia Zheng comforted her repeatedly before she was somewhat consoled.
None of the household dared disperse, but Lady Xing went back to her own quarters, only to find the gates locked and the maids and old servants shut up in several rooms. Having nowhere to go, she burst into loud weeping and made her way to Xifeng's side instead. There she found the second gate and side rooms sealed with paper strips, only the main door standing open, with sobbing sounds coming from within. Lady Xing went in and saw Xifeng lying with her eyes closed, her face the color of ash, while Ping'er wept silently beside her. Supposing Xifeng dead, Lady Xing wept again. Ping'er came forward and said, "Don't cry, Your Ladyship. When she was carried back she seemed dead, but after resting a while she came to and cried a few times. Now the phlegm has subsided and her breathing is steady; she's resting a little more peacefully. Please compose yourself too, Your Ladyship. But I wonder how the Old Lady is?" Lady Xing made no reply but went on to the Dowager's quarters. Seeing that everyone around was in Jia Zheng's service, with her own husband detained, her daughter-in-law critically ill, her daughter suffering, and herself with nowhere to turn, she could barely hold up. The others tried to console her, and Li Wan had rooms prepared for Lady Xing to stay in temporarily, with Lady Wang assigning servants to attend her.
Jia Zheng, waiting outside, was sick at heart, twirling his beard and wringing his hands as he awaited the imperial decree. He heard the guards outside shouting, "Whose side are you on anyway? Since you've run into us, we'll put you on the register. Tie him up and hand him over to the Embroidered Jacket officers inside!" Jia Zheng went out and saw it was Jiaoda. "What are you doing here?" he asked. At this Jiaoda threw himself on the ground, beating his breast and crying to heaven, "I've been urging these worthless young masters every day, and they treat me as an enemy! Even you don't know what hardships Old Jiao suffered with the master in the old days! And now it's come to this! Master Zhen and young Master Rong have been arrested by some prince, the ladies inside have been seized by yamen runners from some office, their hair hanging loose, herded together in an empty room, while those good-for-nothing men and women are penned up like pigs and dogs. Everything has been confiscated and piled up—the wooden furniture smashed to pieces, the porcelain ground to powder. And now they want to tie me up! I'm eighty or ninety years old. I've tied up plenty of people for the master in the old days, but who ever tied me up? So I said I belonged to the western mansion and ran out here. They wouldn't have it and brought me here, and it's the same story. I don't care about my life anymore—I'll fight them!" With that he dashed his head against the ground. The guards, seeing his age and remembering the two princes' orders, did not dare be too rough. "Calm yourself, old man," they said. "This is by imperial command. Rest here a while and wait for news." Jia Zheng understood the situation. Though he said nothing, his heart was wrung as if by a knife. "It's all over!" he cried. "Who would have thought we'd be brought so low!" Just then, anxious for news from inside, Xue Ke came panting in. "I've managed to get in! Where is Uncle?" "Good, you've come. But how did they let you in?" "I begged them again and again and offered them money, that's how I can come and go." Jia Zheng told him about the confiscation and asked him to find out more. "Even good relations won't send news at a time like this, but you can get word through." "I hadn't heard about things here," said Xue Ke. "But I've already heard that the eastern mansion is finished." "What exactly did they do?" "This morning I went to the yamen to find out about my brother's sentence, and I heard two censors had reported that Master Zhen had lured sons of good families into gambling—that's a minor charge. The major one is that he forced a respectable woman to be his concubine and, when she refused, persecuted her to death. The censors weren't sure this would stick, so they arrested your family's Bao Er and also dragged in a man named Zhang. I'm afraid even the Censorate may be implicated, because this Zhang had filed a complaint before." Before he finished, Jia Zheng stamped his foot. "Unbearable! It's all over!" He sighed and tears streamed down his face.
Xue Ke said a few words of comfort, then went out again to make inquiries. Half a day later he came back. "Things are bad. I went to the Board of Punishments but heard nothing yet about the two princes' report to the emperor. However, I did hear that Censor Li this morning impeached the governor of Ping'an Prefecture for flattering metropolitan officials, currying favor with superiors, and oppressing the people—several major charges." "Never mind other people's affairs," Jia Zheng said in alarm. "What about us?" "They say Ping'an Prefecture is connected to us, and the metropolitan official impeached is Master She. The charge is that he interfered in lawsuits, which has added fuel to the fire. Even officials of the same court are hiding and dodging, no one daring to send news. As for the relatives who just scattered, some have gone home, others have stopped at a distance to wait and see. What's hateful is that those noble kinsmen on the road are saying, 'The ancestors built up this estate and now there's trouble. We don't know whose head it will fall on, but it'll give us a chance to show our authority.'" Before he finished, Jia Zheng stamped his foot again. "It's all because our eldest master is too muddle-headed, and the eastern household is too incompetent. We don't even know whether the Old Lady and Xifeng are dead or alive. Go and find out more. I'll go to the Old Lady's side. If there's news, the sooner the better." Just then a commotion broke out inside. "The Old Lady is failing!" Jia Zheng rushed in at once. What her fate was will be told in the next chapter.
