Chapter 102
Wang Qing saw the bench behaving strangely and kicked it with his foot, but he used too much force and wrenched his ribs. He squatted on the ground, crying out, "Agony! Agony!" For a long while he could not move. His wife heard him calling out and came out to look. She saw the bench lying on its side and her husband in such a state, and she slapped him across the face, saying, "You worthless creature! You're always out and about, never minding the home. You've barely been back this evening, and now what have you gone and done?" Wang Qing said, "Sister-in-law, don't make fun of me. I've wrenched my ribs. It's unbearable!" The woman helped Wang Qing to his feet. Wang Qing leaned on his wife's shoulder, shaking his head and gritting his teeth as he cried out, "Oh, it hurts so!" The woman cursed him, "You wastrel, you good-for-nothing! You're always so fond of throwing your legs and fists about, and now you've gone and done yourself in." The woman realized she had misspoken and covered her mouth with her gauze sleeve, laughing. Wang Qing heard the phrase "gone and done yourself in," and even in the midst of such pain, he could not help but laugh—ha ha ha! The woman slapped him across the face again, saying, "You wretched creature, what are you thinking of now?" Thereupon the woman helped Wang Qing to bed, cracked a plate of walnut meat, warmed a pot of hot wine, and gave it to Wang Qing to drink. She herself went to bar the door, swat mosquitoes, lower the bed curtains, and rest with her husband. Wang Qing, because his waist and ribs ached so severely, could not so much as stir his manhood—that goes without saying.
Nothing more happened that night. The next morning, Wang Qing's pain still had not subsided. He wondered in his heart how he could go to the government office to answer the roll. He dragged himself along until noon, when his wife urged him out to buy a medicated plaster. Wang Qing forced himself to the front of the prefectural yamén and bought two plasters from Old Qian, a bonesetter who ran a shop facing south that specialized in treating falls, blows, and injuries. He applied them to his ribs. Old Qian said, "If you want to get well quickly, sir, you need to take two doses of a decoction to heal injuries and move the blood." With that, he measured out two doses of medicine and handed them to Wang Qing. Wang Qing took a piece of silver from his purse, weighing perhaps two or three mian, and wrapped it in a piece of paper. The old man watched him wrap the silver and turned his face toward the east as if pretending not to notice. Wang Qing handed over the paper packet, saying, "I hope you won't think this too paltry, sir. Use it to buy some melons to cool yourself." Old Qian said, "Sir, how could I quibble over such a thing among friends? This I cannot accept!" Even as he was saying this, his right hand had already taken the paper packet, lifted the lid of his medicine box, and dropped the packet inside.
Wang Qing took the medicine and was about to leave when he saw a fortune-teller coming along the western street of the yamén. He wore a single-layer gauze headband over his eyebrows and a straight robe of kudzu cloth, holding up a parasol for shade. Hanging from the parasol was a paper signboard on which were written in large characters the four words "Primordial Divine Calculations," and on either side were sixteen smaller characters reading: "Li Zhu of Jingnan—ten cash per reading, every word accurate, skill surpassing Guan Lu."
Wang Qing saw this was a fortune-teller. He already had the matter of Jiao Xiú weighing on his mind, and having also encountered the strange incident of yesterday, he called out, "Mr. Li, please sit down here." The fortune-teller said, "What does the gentleman wish to consult me about?" Even as he spoke, his eyes darted about, looking Wang Qing up and down from head to foot. Wang Qing said, "I wish to have a divination." Li Zhu lowered his umbrella, walked into the plaster shop, and clasped his hands to Old Qian, saying, "Forgive the intrusion!" Then he reached into the sleeve of his kudzu cloth robe and took out a sandalwood divination tube, opened the lid, and produced a large fixed copper coin, which he handed to Wang Qing, saying, "Please go over there and silently pray to Heaven." Wang Qing took the divination coin and faced the blazing red sun, bowing to offer his respects. But because of his pain, he could not bend at the waist. He was like an old man of eighty or ninety, stiffening his back, half bowing and half cupping his hand, making a half gesture, then standing upright to pray. Li Zhu, watching from the side, whispered to Old Qian in conjecture, "He must have used your plaster, sir, and it's certainly working quickly. I expect he was beaten." Old Qian said, "He saw some bench behaving strangely and kicked it, wrenching his ribs. When he came here just now, he was even breathing with difficulty. After I put two plasters on him, now he can bend his waist." Li Zhu said, "I could tell he had the look of a wrench." When Wang Qing had finished his prayer, he handed the coin back to Li Zhu. Li Zhu asked Wang Qing's name, shook the divination tube, and recited: "Auspicious day and blessed hour, Heaven and Earth unfold. The Sage created the Changes, darkly aiding the spiritual light. Embracing all things, the Way unites with Heaven and Earth. Virtue matching Heaven and Earth, brightness matching the sun and moon, seasons matching the four times, fortune and misfortune matching the spirits and gods. Now there is a gentleman of the surname Wang from Tokyo, Kaifeng Prefecture, who purchases a divination before Heaven. In the Jia-Yin decade, on the Yi-Mao day, we respectfully invoke the First Teacher King Wen of Zhou's Changes, the First Teacher Guiguzi, and the First Teacher Yuan Gangang—most divine, most sagely, most blessed, most spiritual—to illuminate confusion and make clear the recompense."
Li Zhu cast the divination tube twice, building up a hexagram. It was the Zhun hexagram—Water over Thunder. After examining the movement of the six lines, he asked, "What does the gentleman wish to inquire about?" Wang Qing said, "I ask about my household." Li Zhu shook his head and said, "Forgive me for speaking bluntly, sir. Zhun means difficulty—your disasters are only beginning! There are several lines of judgment that you must remember." Li Zhu waved a folding oil-paper fan with bamboo ribs and recited:
"The household is in chaos and confusion,
Hundreds of omens bring calamity—the home is not at peace.
Not an old temple, then a dangerous bridge.
The White Tiger charges—illness and official misfortune strike.
A head without a tail—how has it ever succeeded?
Meeting nobility brings alarm, lawsuits and trials abound.
The people of the household are unsafe, stumbling and falling,
The limbs are weak, propped on crutches.
If you change and move, disputes will dissolve.
But on days of the Tiger, Dragon, Rooster, and Dog,
Many troubles and calamitous stars will be stirred up."
That day, Wang Qing sat on the ground facing Li Zhu. Unable to bear the stench of persimmon lacquer from the oil-paper fan, he covered his nose with his black silk robe sleeve and listened to him. When Li Zhu finished reciting, he said to Wang Qing, "Young man, I speak to you according to reason—there are still strange and uncanny things happening in your household! You must reform your ways and move elsewhere to ensure no further harm. Tomorrow is the day of Bingshen; you must be careful!" Wang Qing, hearing his dire warnings, was at a loss what to do. He paid Li Zhu some money in gratitude. Li Zhu then left the medicine shop, opened his umbrella, and headed east.
There were five or six government clerks and runners from the prefecture office who saw Wang Qing and said, "What are you doing idling here chatting?" Wang Qing told them about the strange and sinister things he had encountered, and they all laughed. Wang Qing said, "Gentlemen, if the Prefect asks about me, please cover for your brother!" They all said, "We understand." With that, they dispersed.
Wang Qing returned home and told his wife to decoct the medicine. Wang Qing wanted to recover quickly, so in less than two hours he took both doses of medicine. To help the medicine take effect, he also drank several extra cups of wine. What he did not know was that the properties of the medicine for removing bruises and promoting blood circulation were all heating in nature. That night, as he rested, his wife pressed and fondled him at his side, stirring his fire. Only his lower back pain prevented him from moving. But how could he restrain that woman? Because Wang Qing had been dallying with Jiao Xiu and not returning home day and night, she had been kept lonely and deprived for so long that her desire blazed like fire. How could she let him be? She climbed on top of Wang Qing and staged a "Raid on the Tender Willow Camp." The two of them slept until the hour of the Dragon the next morning before they finally got up. After washing and grooming, Wang Qing, feeling empty in his stomach, warmed some wine and drank it. He was in the middle of eating breakfast, not yet finished, when he heard someone calling from outside: "Is the Du Pai at home?" His wife looked through a crack in the wooden partition and said, "It's two men from the prefecture office." When Wang Qing heard this, he froze for a moment. He had no choice but to put down his rice bowl, wipe his mouth, and walk out. He clasped his hands and asked, "What brings you two honored gentlemen here? What instructions do you have?" The two clerks said, "The Du Pai is truly enjoying himself! Such a fine rosy complexion on your face so early in the morning! The Grand Master called the roll this morning and was furious that the Du Pai did not appear. We brothers reported on your behalf about the strange and sinister things you encountered, but how could he believe it? He drew a warrant and sent the two of us to bring you back for questioning." They showed the warrant to Wang Qing. Wang Qing said, "My face is all flushed now—how can I go to see him? It would be better if I waited a while." The two clerks said, "This has nothing to do with us; the Grand Master is waiting for an answer right now. If we are delayed, we will be dragged into a beating. Let's go! Let's go!" The two men supported Wang Qing and hurried him along. Wang Qing's wife came out in a flurry to ask about it, but her husband had already been taken out the door.
The two clerks escorted Wang Qing into the Kaifeng Prefectural Office. the Prefect was sitting in a tiger-skin armchair in the hall. The two clerks brought Wang Qing forward and reported, "By Your Honor's orders, Wang Qing has been brought in." Wang Qing勉强 managed to kowtow four times toward the upper hall. The Prefect shouted, "Wang Qing, you are a military officer. Why are you so negligent in your duties that you do not come to serve?" Wang Qing once again recounted in detail the strange and sinister things he had encountered, saying, "Truly, my waist and ribs ache so badly that I cannot sit or lie in comfort, nor can I walk. I dare not be negligent. I beg Your Honor for mercy." When the Prefect had heard this, and seeing Wang Qing's flushed face, he flew into a rage and bellowed, "You scoundrel specializes in drinking and acting wickedly, doing all manner of unjust and unlawful things! Today you have fabricated demonic words to deceive your superiors!" He ordered him dragged down and beaten. How could Wang Qing make himself understood? On the spot, Wang Qing was beaten until his skin split and his flesh was torn open. They wanted him to confess to the crime of fabricating demonic texts to delude the common people and plotting rebellion. Wang Qing had been drained by his wife the night before and was now being tortured by the authorities—truly like a tree being felled with double axes. He died and came back to life. Unable to endure the beating, he had no choice but to confess under duress. The Prefect recorded Wang Qing's confession and ordered the jailers to put canes and shackles on Wang Qing and throw him into the condemned prisoners' cell. He was to be questioned on the capital charge of fabricating demonic texts and plotting rebellion.
It turned out that Tong Guan had secretly sent word to the Prefect, looking for an excuse to frame him. And just then, this strange incident presented itself. At that time, everyone in the prefecture, high and low, knew about the affair with Jiao Xiu. It was being talked about far and wide: "Wang Qing has offended because of this matter—now he certainly cannot stay alive." At that time, Cai Jing and Cai You felt quite uneasy hearing of it. Father and daughter discussed the matter and concluded that if Wang Qing's life were taken, this affair would seem all the more true, and the ugly rumor would spread even further. So they secretly summoned trusted officials who were close acquaintances of the Prefect and instructed him to quickly have Wang Qing tattooed and exiled to a remote and evil prefecture to erase all trace of him. Cai Jing and Cai You chose a day to welcome Jiao Xiu and marry her—on one hand to cover up Tong Guan's shame, and on the other to silence everyone's gossip. Cai You's son, in any case, was dull-witted; whether Jiao Xiu was a maiden or not was of no concern. But enough of this.
Now then, the Kaifeng Prefect obeyed the secret instructions from the trusted confidants of Grand Tutor Cai and immediately ascended to the hall in session. That day was the day of Xinyou. He ordered Wang Qing brought out from the jail, removed his long cangue, and gave him twenty blows on the back with the heavy rod. He called a tattooing artisan to mark his face, and based on the distance of the place to which he was to be exiled, assigned him to the prison camp of Shanzhou, administered by the Xijing circuit. On the spot, a ten-and-a-half-jin round-headed iron-leaf body-protecting cangue was put on him and nailed shut. A seal was affixed, a dispatch document was issued, and two escorting clerks named Sun Lin and He Ji were assigned to supervise his transport.
The three men left the Kaifeng prefectural office, and Wang Qing's father-in-law, the wealthy landowner Niu, came forward to meet them. Together with Wang Qing, Sun Lin, and He Ji, they went to a wine shop on Yamen South Street and sat down. The wealthy landowner Niu called for the wine keeper to bring food and wine. After a few cups, the wealthy landowner Niu took a packet of loose silver from his person and handed it to Wang Qing, saying, "Thirty taels of silver for your expenses along the way." Wang Qing reached out his hand to accept it and said, "I am indebted to you, father-in-law." The wealthy landowner Niu pushed his hand away, saying, "It's not so simple! In ordinary times I wouldn't give you silver. You are now being sent in penal servitude to Shanzhou, over a thousand li away, across mountains and distant roads. Who knows when you will return? You seduced another man's daughter, but you've not spared your own wife! Who will provide for your wife in your absence? You have no sons or daughters, and no land or property for her to rely on. You must write a letter of divorce. Once you have gone, she may remarry as she pleases, and there will be no future dispute. Only then will I give you the silver." Wang Qing, who was always free with his money, thought to himself: "I don't have so much as ten taels or half a catty of silver on me. How can I get to Shanzhou?" He turned it over and over in his mind, wanting the silver for his journey, and sighed twice. "So be it, so be it! I'll have to write the divorce letter." The wealthy landowner Niu took the paper in one hand and gave him the silver with the other, then went off on his own.
Wang Qing returned home with the two officials to pack his bags and bundles, but his wife had already been taken to the wealthy landowner Niu's house by her father, and the door was locked. Wang Qing borrowed an axe and chisel from a neighbor, broke open the door, and went inside to look. Everything his wife had worn or had in her hair had been taken away. Wang Qing was both angry and miserable. He asked old Widow Zhou next door to prepare some food and wine at his house for the officials, and gave ten taels of silver to Sun Lin and He Ji, saying, "This humble man's bruises from the beating are too painful to walk on. I wish to rest for a few days before setting out on the road." Sun Lin and He Ji had received the money and were willing enough to agree, but Cai You had sent trusted men to urge the officials to depart. Wang Qing hastily sold off his household goods and returned the rented house to Landlord Hu.
By this time Wang Qing's father, Wang Huo, had been blinded in both eyes by the anger his son had caused him. He lived separately now, and when his son came to his door, he would curse him even before striking him. Today, hearing that his son had been convicted and sentenced to penal servitude, his heart ached. He had a young servant lead him to Wang Qing's house and called out, "My son! You would not heed my teachings, and now this has come to pass." With that, tears fell from his blind, clouded eyes. Wang Qing had never once called Wang Huo "father" since childhood. But now, at this moment of family ruin and separation, his heart too was filled with bitterness, and he called out, "Father, this humble son has today been wronged by such an unjust lawsuit. That old scoundrel Niu treated me most discourteously and forced me to write a divorce document before he would give me the silver." Wang Huo said, "You have always loved your wife and honored your father-in-law. How can he treat you this way today?" Upon hearing these two barbed remarks, Wang Qing was filled with rage and paid his father no further heed. He went straight off with the two officials, packed up, and left the city. Wang Huo stamped his fist and beat his chest, saying, "It was my own fault for coming to see that wretched creature!" He had the young servant support him and went back home. Of this, no more.
Wang Qing, Sun Lin, and He Ji left Tokyo and found lodging in a secluded spot. After ten days or so, their whip wounds began to heal, but the guards pressed them on their way. They trudged along toward Shaanzhou. It was then early in the sixth month, and the heat was intense. In a day they could cover no more than forty or fifty li. Along the road they inevitably slept on those deathly cold beds and ate scalding hot broth. After fifteen or six days they passed Mount Song.
One day as they walked along, Sun Lin pointed with his hand toward a distant mountain peak to the west and said, "That mountain is called Beimang Mountain, under the jurisdiction of the Western Capital." As they talked, they took advantage of the early coolness and covered twenty li or more. They saw a town east of Beimang Mountain, with farmers from the surrounding villages streaming into the market from all sides. On the east side of the town, where houses were sparse, three large cypress trees stood in a row forming the shape of the character ding. Beneath the trees the shade was deep and cool. A crowd of people, shoulder to shoulder and back to back, had surrounded a man stripped to the waist, who was shouting and hollering as he twirled his staff in the cool shade beneath the trees. The three men walked under the trees to rest. Wang Qing was drenched in sweat, his whole body soaked through. Wearing his escorting cangue, he pushed his way into the crowd and stood on tiptoe to watch the man perform with his staff.
After watching for a while, Wang Qing could not help blurting out with a laugh, "That fellow is using a flowery staff!" The man was just performing at his most exciting moment when he heard these words. He stopped and looked—and it was a convict. The man flew into a rage and cursed, "You thieving convict! My spear and staff skills are known far and wide. How dare you open your filthy mouth and disparage my staff, letting out that kind of fart!" He threw down his staff, raised his fist, and struck Wang Qing square in the face.
Two young men stepped out from the crowd and stopped him. "Don't fight!" they said. Then they asked Wang Qing, "You must be an expert." Wang Qing said, "I spoke carelessly and provoked his anger. I do know a little about spears and staffs." The man who had been performing with the staff cursed angrily, "You thieving convict—dare you compete with me?" The two men said to Wang Qing, "If you dare to spar with that fellow with staffs and beat him, we'll give you these two strings of cash that we've set aside." Wang Qing laughed and said, "That's fine too." They parted the crowd. Wang Qing took the staff pole from He Ji, stripped off his sweat-soaked shirt, hitched up his skirt, and gripped the staff. Everyone said, "You've got a cangue around your neck—how can you swing a staff?" Wang Qing said, "That's what makes this interesting. If I beat him while wearing the escorting cangue, then it counts as real skill." All the voices said in unison, "If you win with the cangue on, these two strings of cash are definitely yours." They made way and let Wang Qing enter. The other man also gripped his staff, assumed a posture of readiness, and shouted, "Come on, come on, come on!" Wang Qing said, "Gentlemen, please don't laugh." The other man, knowing full well that Wang Qing was hampered by his escorting cangue, set up a stance called "Python Swallowing an Elephant." Wang Qing also set up a stance called "Dragonfly Skimming the Water." The other man shouted and brought his staff down in a sweeping strike. Wang Qing stepped back. The man advanced a step and raised his staff, bringing it down again on the top of Wang Qing's head. Wang Qing dodged to the left. The man's staff struck nothing but air, and he couldn't pull it back in time. In that moment of dodging, Wang Qing swung his staff at the man's right hand and struck his right wrist, knocking the staff from his grip. Fortunately Wang Qing showed restraint—otherwise he would have broken the man's wrist. The crowd burst out laughing.
Wang Qing stepped forward and took the man's hand. "Please forgive the offense!" The man's right hand was in pain, so he reached out with his left hand to take the two strings of cash. The crowd all shouted out at once, "That fellow's skills are low and shabby—we agreed just now, this money goes to the one who wins the staff match!" The two young men who had first stepped forward snatched the two strings of cash from the man's hand and gave them to Wang Qing. "Please come to our humble manor for a chat," they said. The man who had been performing with the staff could not go against the crowd and had no choice but to pack up his gear and head toward the town. The crowd dispersed.
Two men invited Wang Qing, along with the two bailiffs, all wearing straw hats, and headed south past two or three groves of trees, arriving at a village. In the grove stood a large manor, surrounded all around by earthen walls, with two or three hundred large willow trees along the wall. Outside the manor, cicadas chirped among the willows; inside, young swallows sang from the rafters. The two men invited Wang Qing and the other two into the manor compound, and they entered the thatched hall. After the exchange of courtesies, each man removed his sweat-soaked shirt and hemp sandals and sat down in the places proper for host and guest. The master of the manor asked, "You gentlemen all sound as if you're from the Eastern Capital." Wang Qing gave his name and told of how the prefect had framed him. When he finished, he asked the two men their names. The two were overjoyed. The one seated in the upper place said, "My humble name is Gong, given name Duan. This is my younger brother, given name Zheng. Our family has lived here for generations, and for this reason this place is called Gongjia Village. It falls under the jurisdiction of Xin'an County in the Western Capital prefecture." After saying this, he ordered a servant to wash the three men's soaked shirts for them. First, cool water was fetched to relieve the summer heat and thirst. Then the three were led to the inner chambers to bathe. In the thatched hall, a table was set, and they first ate ready-made refreshments. Then chickens were slaughtered, ducks killed, beans boiled, and peaches picked, and a feast was laid out. The servants set the table anew, first bringing out a dish of peeled garlic and a dish of sliced spring onions, then bringing out vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, chickens, and ducks. Gong Duan invited Wang Qing to sit in the upper seat. The two bailiffs sat together in one row. Gong Duan and his brother took the lower seats as hosts, and the servants poured the wine. Wang Qing said gratefully, "This humble one is a condemned prisoner. I am deeply moved by your kind regard, but it is improper for you to go to such trouble for me." Gong Duan said, "What talk is that! Who can guarantee they will never have trouble? Who carries food and wine on the road for nothing?" At once they began guessing fingers and playing drinking games. When they were halfway through the wine, Gong Duan spoke up: "In this humble village, front and back, left and right, there are some two hundred households, and they have pushed my brother and me to act as their leaders. My brother and I are also somewhat skilled in boxing and cudgel arts, which keeps the others in check. Last spring in the second month, the village to the east held a temple festival with an opera stage. My brother and I went over to watch, and there we encountered a man from that village named Huang Da. Over a gambling quarrel, that fellow gave us a sound beating. My brother and I could not get the better of him. That Huang Da bragged before everyone about his strength, and my brother and I, unable to do anything about it, had to swallow our anger and say nothing. Just now we observed that Captain Wang's cudgel technique is extremely precise and well-ordered. We two wish to bow to Captain Wang as our teacher. We beg our teacher to instruct this humble pair, and we shall surely reward you handsomely." Wang Qing was overjoyed to hear this, though he made a show of modesty. Gong Duan and his brother then bowed to Wang Qing as their teacher. That evening they drank until they were thoroughly drunk, then rested in the cool air.
The next morning at dawn, Wang Qing took advantage of the early coolness and was instructing Gong Duan in boxing and kicking techniques on the threshing ground when he saw a man outside, hands clasped behind his back, pacing in. He shouted, "What condemned soldier dares come here showing off his skills?" Because this man walked in, it would come about that Wang Qing once again planted the seed of great calamity, and Gong Duan made yet another deadly enemy. Truly—disaster rises from reckless conduct, and disgrace is born of gambling. Who exactly was this man who walked into Gong Duan's manor? Listen to the next chapter.
