Chapter 100
Water Margin
Chapter 100
It is said that the city walls of Taiyuan County were breached by "The Dragon That Muddies the Waters" Li Jun, who, taking advantage of the swollen waters after a heavy rain, together with the Two Zhangs and the Three Ruan brothers, led the navy to breach the Zhibo Canal and the Jin River at the appointed hour, flooding the city of Taiyuan. In an instant, the waters surged mightily. One could see: sudden torrents rushing forth, and billows rising apace. Soldiers came charging on wooden rafts; warriors arrived riding the heavenly barges. Spirits wailed and ghosts wept, and the dim sun lost its light; mountains shook and crags collapsed, and the vast waves roared in fury. The city walls all fell, and the guard posts were swept away. Banners vanished with the current, and weapons of blue and red intermingled. The swirling waters could be barely parted, and frost-like and snow-like blades crossed. The dead floated and sank like fish and turtles, and hot blood boiled alongside the waves. In a moment, trees were uprooted; in an instant, rafters and lintels flew over the water.
At that time, the city was in turmoil. Soldiers, officers, and civilians, seeing the water suddenly arrive, all climbed, dripping wet, onto walls and roofs, clinging to beams and holding onto rafters. The old, the weak, the fat, and the large had no choice but to climb onto tables and benches. In the blink of an eye, even the tables and benches began to float. The houses collapsed, and all became fish and turtles in the water. Outside the city, Li Jun, the Two Zhangs, and the Three Ruan brothers, riding the Fei Jiang and Tian Fu vessels, pressed close to the city, their height matching that of the city walls. Soldiers climbed up the walls, each grasping sharp blades, and cut down the defenders. Other soldiers came charging on wooden rafts, and wherever the walls were struck, none did not topple. Zhang Xiong, on the city tower, was crying out in distress, when Zhang Heng and Zhang Shun came up the walls from the flying boats, hand-halberds in hand, shouting, and rushed up the tower. They cut down more than ten soldiers in a row, and the rest scattered in a panic to flee. Zhang Xiong could not escape in time; Zhang Heng struck him down with a hand-halberd, and Zhang Shun rushed forward and with a *gecha* sound, chopped off his head. By the time the waters had dispersed and receded in all directions, the number of soldiers and civilians in the city who had drowned or been crushed was beyond counting. Beams, pillars, doors, window frames, miscellaneous objects, and corpses drifted with the current and clogged the south of the city. In the city, only the Summer Retreat Palace, built by the Divine Emperor of Northern Qi, stood on a high and solid foundation. The nearby soldiers and civilians all rushed up onto it in a crush, trampling one another, and more than two thousand died. Adding those on the high ground and the city walls, only just over a thousand soldiers and civilians survived in total. As for the people outside the city, they had been secretly summoned by the vanguard Lu, who notified the neighborhood chiefs and instructed the residents to make preparations in advance. At the sound of the gongs, they all immediately climbed to the high ground. Moreover, the area outside the city was open and spread out in all directions, and the waters receded quickly, so the people outside the city were not buried.
At that time, "The Dragon That Muddies the Waters" Li Jun led the navy and seized the West Gate; "The Boatman" Zhang Heng, together with "The White Streak in the Waves" Zhang Shun, captured the North Gate; "The God of the Ground" Ruan Xiaoer and "The Short-lived Second Son" Ruan Xiaowu took the East Gate; "The Living King of Hell" Ruan Xiaogqi captured the South Gate. Over all four gates, the banners of the Song army were raised. By evening, the waters had receded, exposing the flat ground. Li Jun and the others opened the city gates wide and invited the vanguard Lu and his army to enter the city. Within the city, neither the crowing of cocks nor the barking of dogs could be heard; the dead were piled like mountains. Although Zhang Xiong and the others had filled up the measure of their iniquity, Li Jun's stratagem was indeed too cruel. Those thousand or so people knelt scattered on the muddy ground, kowtowing for their lives like rows of candles. Lu Junyi examined this group and found that among them were only a dozen or so soldiers; the rest were all commoners. Xiang Zhong and Xu Yue had climbed up onto a large cypress tree by the house behind the marshal's headquarters; seeing the waters recede, they slipped down and were captured by the southern army and brought to the vanguard Lu. Lu Junyi ordered their execution as a warning. He distributed silver from the county treasury to relieve the people inside and outside the city who had suffered from the flooding; he sent men to report the victory to Song Jiang. At the same time, he ordered soldiers to bury the corpses and rebuild the city walls and houses, and summoned the people to resettle.
Let us leave Lu Junyi restoring order and attending to matters in Taiyuan County, and return to before the fall of Tianyuan. At that time, Tian Hu led a hundred thousand troops, and because of the rain, was encamped south of the Tongdi Mountains. Scouts reported that the Country Uncle of Wu had died of illness, and the Commandery Lady and the Commandery Son-in-law had retreated to Xiangyuan to encoffin the Country Uncle. Tian Hu was greatly alarmed and sent men to Xiangyuan City to convey an imperial decree, ordering Qiong Ying to guard the city, and Quan Yu to come to be employed, and to ask why the men sent to Xiangyuan had not returned to report.
The next day the rain cleared. At dawn, a swift scout galloped in to report that Jiang had sent Sun An and Ma Ling with troops to resist the enemy. Upon hearing the report, Tian Hu said in a great rage, "Sun An and Ma Ling both received high office and generous emoluments from me, yet today they have rebelled, which is intolerable in reason. I shall go in person to question them. You, my ministers, strive your utmost: whoever captures these two men shall receive a reward of a thousand gold and be enfeoffed as a marquis of ten thousand households." Thereupon Tian Hu personally drove his troops forward to face the Song army. The northern army observed the banners of the Song army, and they belonged to "The Ailing Yuchi" Sun Li and "The Iron Flute Immortal" Ma Lin. Before the northern array, golden melons were densely arrayed and iron axes were aligned in rows; swords and halberds formed lines, and banners made ranks. Under the nine-curved flying dragon and the ochre-yellow canopy, on a silver-maned white horse with a golden bridle and a silver saddle, sat that grass-king Tian Hu, who came out before the front line to personally oversee the battle. Behind the southern array, Song Jiang led Wu Yong, Sun Xin, Gu Dawang, Wang Ying, Hu Saniang, Sun Li, Zhu Tong, and Yan Shun with their troops, and they arrived. Song Jiang also personally supervised the battle.
When Tian Hu heard that it was Song Jiang, he was just about to dispatch a general into the array to capture Song Jiang, when he suddenly heard a galloping horseman report: "Guan Sheng and the other generals have successively taken the two cities of Yushe and Dagu. The western army of Lu Junyi has also broken the two counties of Pingyao and Jiexiu, and they diverted water to flood the city of Taiyuan, leaving not a single soldier or general within. The Right Prime Minister Bian Xiang has encamped at Mianshan, facing Hua Rong and the others, but Lu Junyi led his troops from Taiyuan and attacked from behind. Prime Minister Bian could not withstand the two-pronged attack and was utterly defeated; Bian Xiang was captured alive by Lu Junyi and brought across the lines. Lu Junyi and Guan Sheng have joined their forces and are besieging Qinyuan County as tightly as an iron bucket." Having heard this, Tian Hu was alarmed and at a loss. He hastily issued an order to withdraw the army and retreat to defend Weisheng City.
At that time, Li Tianxi and the others held the battle line, while Xue Shi, Lin Xin, Hu Ying, and Tang Chang protected Tian Hu and pressed forward. From the north of Mount Tongdi came the thunderous roar of cannon fire. As Song Jiang had secretly instructed, Lu Zhishen, Liu Tang, Bao Xu, Xiang Chong, and Li Gun led elite infantry in a flanking maneuver north of Mount Tongdi, splitting into two forces and charging forward. Tian Hu hastily drove his imperial guard cavalry to meet them, but suddenly Ma Ling and Sun An led troops in from the east, cutting diagonally across the field. Ma Ling, standing on his Wind-Fire Wheels, hurled golden bricks at the northern army in wild disarray; Sun An swung his twin swords, slashing and killing. The two generals drove their troops into the northern formation as though entering an unpeopled land, splitting the northern army in two. Though the northern army numbered a hundred thousand, Wu Yong's plan for these three forces crashing through from every direction sent them into utter ruin—scattered like stars and clouds, severed in seven places and broken in eight. Li Tianxi and the other pseudo-ministers protected Tian Hu as they broke east and fled, but Lu Zhishen and his men, armed with lances, round shields, and flying blades, carved through a river of blood and charged forward, scattering Li Tianxi, Zheng Zhirui, Xue Shi, Lin Xin, and their troops westward. Though Tian Hu's imperial guard cavalry had been chosen as the finest and bravest, and though they had always fought government troops before, they had never encountered such ferocity—how could they withstand it now!
At Tian Hu's side remained only the Regional Commander Hu Ying, Tang Chang, the Chief Steward Ye Qing, and generals of the Imperial Guard, leading five thousand defeated remnant troops in a desperate flight. Just as they reached their most perilous moment, suddenly another body of cavalry burst in from the east. Tian Hu looked up and cried to Heaven, "Heaven has abandoned me!" The northern army looked at the banner of that force. At its head rode a handsome young general in a blue kerchief and green battle robe, grasping a pear-blossom spear, mounted on a tall white curly-haired horse. The banner read clearly: "Restoration Vanguard and South-Pacifying Son-in-Law Quan Yu." At that time, Ye Qing, who rode close beside Tian Hu, saw the banner and reported it to Tian Hu. Tian Hu issued an urgent order for the son-in-law to come to the rescue. The young general Quan approached, dismounted, and knelt in report: "Your Majesty, I wear armor and cannot prostrate myself. I deserve death ten thousand times over." Tian Hu said, "I pardon you." Quan Yu further reported: "The situation is critical. I beg Your Majesty to withdraw to Xiangyuan City to avoid the enemy's sharp edge. Allow me and the princess to drive back the Song soldiers, then invite Your Majesty to the Grand Palace in Weisheng to devise a good plan and restore your realm."
Tian Hu was overjoyed. He issued orders to march on Xiangyuan at once. General Quan Yu held off the pursuing troops from behind. When Tian Hu and his party reached the walls of Xiangyuan, shouts of pursuit thundered behind them. The garrison soldiers on the walls saw this, quickly opened the city gate, and lowered the drawbridge. Hu Ying led the troops ahead, and the soldiers, hearing the pursuers close behind, surged into the city in a stampede, caring nothing for their king. The moment Hu Ying passed through the gate, a clapper sounded on both sides. Ambush troops sprang up together, driving Hu Ying and over three thousand men into a concealed pit, where soldiers stabbed them with long spears at will. Pitiful—over three thousand men, not a single one left alive. A great cry rose from within the city: "We want Tian Hu alive!" Tian Hu, seeing treachery unfold within the walls, now knew it was a ruse. He reined his horse and fled north. Zhang Qing and Ye Qing galloped in pursuit. Tian Hu's excellent horse ran too fast, and Zhang Qing and Ye Qing with their troops could not keep up; they were already a bowshot behind. Then suddenly a whirlwind rose before Tian Hu's horse. Within the wind appeared a woman who cried out, "Villain Tian Hu! You murdered both my husband and me—where will you flee today?" Beside the woman, a second cold wind rolled straight toward Tian Hu's face, and the woman vanished without a trace. Tian Hu's horse suddenly reared and neighed in terror. Tian Hu fell from the saddle to the ground. Zhang Qing and Ye Qing caught up, dismounted, and with the soldiers surged forward and seized him. Tang Chang led his men on horseback, spears leveled, to rescue his lord. Zhang Qing saw Tang Chong charging and hastily mounted, flicked a stone, and struck Tang Chang squarely in the face, knocking him from his horse. Zhang Qing shouted, "I am no Quan Yu—I am Zhang Qing, the 'Arrowless Arrow' under the Song vanguard commander!" At that moment, Kui and Wu Song led five hundred foot soldiers charging out of the city. The two men roared as one, and the Palace Marshal generals and Imperial Guard officers, over two thousand men, were scattered like stars and clouds. Zhang Qing stabbed Tang Chang to death, bound Tian Hu, and escorted him into the city. They closed the gates and would not release him until the Song vanguard had routed the northern army. Lu Zhishen arrived in pursuit and saw that Tian Hu had been taken into the city. Lu Zhishen and his men turned west and fought their way to the side of Mount Tongdi.
By then it was the hour of you. Song Jiang's three forces had fought the northern army all day, killing over twenty thousand soldiers. Leaderless, the northern army fled for their lives in every direction. The Lady Fan and all the concubines were killed by the routed soldiers. Li Tianxi, Zheng Zhirui, Xue Shi, and Lin Xin led over thirty thousand men and occupied Mount Tongdi. Song Jiang surrounded them on all sides. Lu Zhishen came to report that Tian Hu had been captured by Zhang Qing. Song Jiang raised his hand to his forehead in relief and hastily issued orders, dispatching riders at top speed to Xiangyuan, instructing Wu Song and the others to guard the city gates closely and keep watch over Tian Hu. He ordered Zhang Qing to lead troops swiftly to Weisheng to support Yingying and the others.
It turned out that Qiongying had already received the secret plan from Military Adviser Wu, together with Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, Le He, Duan Jingzhu, Wang Dingliu, Yu Baosi, Cai Fu, and Cai Qing, leading five thousand soldiers, all bearing the banners and insignia of the Northern army, and had lain in ambush beside Shipan Mountain outside Wuxiang County. Qiongying and the others had learned that Tian Hu was engaged in battle with our forces, and Qiongying led her men by a forced night march to the gates of Weisheng. That evening, the sunset glow had faded and a new moon hung like a hook. Qiongying called out beneath the walls in a voice as melodious as a warbling oriole: "I am the Princess, who has escorted the Great King here. Open the gates at once!" The garrison soldiers on the walls at once flew to the palace to report. Tian Bao and Tian Biao, upon receiving the news, mounted their horses and galloped to the south gate, hurrying up the wall tower to look. Sure enough, beneath the ochre-yellow umbrella, on a white horse with a carved saddle and silver mane, sat the Great King, with a female general before him. On her banner was written in large characters "Princess Qiongying," and behind her followed a minister and a commander-in-chief at a distance. Qiongying called out loudly: "Commander Hu and the others were defeated by the Song troops. I have specially escorted the Great King here. Command all officials to come out of the city and receive the sovereign!" Tian Bao and the others, seeing that it was Tian Hu, at once ordered the gates opened and went out to welcome him. The two men had scarcely reached the horse's head when they heard the Great King on horseback roar in a thunderous voice: "Seize these two traitors for Your Majesty!" The soldiers surged forward and seized them. Tian Bao and Tian Biao cried out: "We two are innocent!" But as they struggled desperately, the soldiers had already bound them with ropes. The Tian Hu who had been there was in fact a soldier of the Southern army chosen by Sun An on Wu Yong's instructions for his resemblance to Tian Hu, dressed up as Tian Hu; the minister and commander-in-chief behind were Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, and several others in disguise. At once the men all drew their weapons. Wang Dingliu, Yu Baosi, Cai Fu, and Cai Qing, leading over five hundred men, took Tian Bao and Tian Biao away by night to Xiangyuan. Those on the walls, seeing that Tian Bao and Tian Biao had been seized and escorted southward, realized at once that there was treachery and hurried out of the city to rescue them. But Qiongying, bent on killing Tian Ding regardless of her own life, together with Jie Zhen and Jie Bao, surged into the city. The garrison soldiers came forward to resist, but Qiongying's flying stones struck them, wounding six or seven men in succession. Jie Zhen and Jie Bao joined Qiongying in the fray. Outside the city, Le He and Duan Jingzhu hastily ordered the soldiers to shed their Northern army disguise. Every one of them now wore Southern army uniforms, and together they rushed into the city and seized the South Gate. Le He and Duan Jingzhu, wielding broadswords, led their men up the wall, scattered the garrison soldiers, and raised the Song army banners. The city was thrown into an uproar. Many of the puppet civil and military officials, royal relatives, and nobles hastily led troops to fight back. Qiongying's four thousand men had penetrated deep into the enemy's lair—how could they withstand such odds? But then Zhang Qing arrived with over eight thousand men, drove his troops into the city, and found Qiongying, Jie Zhen, and Jie Bao locked in a fierce battle with the Northern troops. Zhang Qing rode forward and with his flying stones struck four Northern generals, driving back the Northern army. Zhang Qing said to Qiongying: "You should not have penetrated so deep into enemy territory, and besides, you were outnumbered." Qiongying replied: "I wish to avenge my father. Though my body be ground to dust, I will not flinch!" Zhang Qing said: "Tian Hu has already been captured by me in Xiangyuan." Only then did Qiongying's heart gladden.
They were about to lead their troops out of the city when, as if Heaven too abhorred the wickedness of these bandits, Lu Junyi broke through the defenses of Qinyuan and arrived with his main force. Seeing the banners at the South Gate, he hastened to drive his troops into the city and join forces with Zhang Qing to pursue and slay the Northern troops. Qin Ming, Yang Zhi, Du Qian, and Song Wan led their men and seized the East Gate; Ouyang Peng, Deng Fei, Lei Heng, and Yang Lin seized the West Gate; Huang Xin, Chen Da, Yang Chun, and Zhou Tong led their men and seized the North Gate; Yang Xiong, Shi Xiu, Jiao Ting, Mu Chun, Zheng Tianzhou, Zou Yuan, and Zou Run led foot soldiers with broadswords and axes, hacking and slaying their way in from before the palace; Gong Wang, Ding Desun, Li Li, Shi Yong, and Tao Zongwang led foot soldiers hacking and slaying their way in from the rear slaughter gate. Countless concubines, palace women, and eunuchs within the palace were killed. Upon learning of the uprising, Tian Ding cut his own throat and died. Zhang Qing, Qiongying, Zhang Qing, Sun Erniang, Tang Bin, Wen Zhongrong, Cui Ye, Geng Gong, Cao Zheng, Xue Yong, Li Zhong, Zhu Fu, Shi Qian, and Bai Sheng divided their forces to slay the puppet ministers, puppet commanders-in-chief, puppet privy councilors and below, as well as the bandits enfeoffed as royal relatives and nobles. Truly:
Human heads rolled beneath the golden palace steps,
Hot blood sprayed across the jade-lined court gates.
Say not that jade and stone cannot be told apart—
For blessing or for calamity, let each examine his own heart.
The Song troops in Weisheng slaughtered until corpses lay strewn across the marketplaces and blood filled the ditches. Lu Junyi issued orders that no commoners were to be harmed. He at once dispatched men to report the victory to the Song vanguard commander. That night the Song troops did not cease their tumult until the fifth watch, and many officers and soldiers surrendered.
At daybreak, Lu Junyi took a roll call of his officers. Apart from "Divine Strategist" Zhu Wu, who remained in Qinyuan to garrison the city, none of the other officers had suffered injury or loss. Only the surrendered general Geng Gong had been trampled to death by men and horses. The officers all came to present their achievements. Jiao Ting brought the corpse of Tian Ding on his back. Qiongying gnashed her teeth, drew her sword, cut off his head, and dismembered his corpse. By this time, Tian Li's wife Madam Ni had already died. Qiongying sought out Ye Qing's wife Madam An, took leave of Lu Junyi, and together with Zhang Qing went to Xiangyuan, where they escorted Tian Hu and the others under guard to the Song vanguard commander. Lu Junyi was busily attending to military affairs when a scout arrived to report that the Northern general Fang Xuewu had surrounded Suo Chao and Tang Long in Yushe County. Lu Junyi at once ordered Guan Sheng, Qin Ming, Lei Heng, Chen Da, Yang Chun, Yang Lin, and Zhou Tong to lead their troops to rescue Suo Chao and the others.
The next day, Li Tianxi and his men had been defeated by Song Jiang at Tongdi Mountain. Meanwhile, Song Jiang sent a messenger to report to Prefect Chen, saying: "The bandit stronghold has been destroyed and the bandit chieftains have been captured. I request the Prefect come to Weicheng city to take charge of affairs." Song Jiang led his great army and arrived outside Weicheng, where Lu Junyi and the others came out to welcome them into the city. Song Jiang issued proclamations to reassure the people. Lu Junyi brought Bian Xiang before him. Song Jiang saw that Bian Xiang was a man of imposing stature and personally loosened his bonds, treating him with courtesy. Bian Xiang, seeing such generous spirit in Song Jiang, was moved to gratitude and submitted to him.
The next day, Zhang Qing, Qiongying, and Ye Qing arrived with Tian Hu, Tian Bao, and Tian Biao imprisoned in cage-carts. Qiongying and Zhang Qing together paid their respects to their uncle, Vanguard Commander Song Jiang. Qiongying thanked Wang Ying and the others for pardoning her past offenses. Song Jiang ordered Tian Hu and his men to be held under guard on one side, to be sent to the capital together with the army for presentation as prisoners of war when the troops returned. He then had wine set out to celebrate with Zhang Qing and Qiongying. That day, Fang Shun and other garrison officers of Wuxiang, a county belonging to Weicheng, came with registers of military and civilian households, account books, and granary funds to offer their submission. Song Jiang rewarded them for their labor and instructed Fang Shun to continue garrisoning the area as before. Song Jiang remained in Weicheng city for two days in succession, when a scout arrived and reported that Guan Sheng and the others had reached Yushe County and, together with Suo Chao and Tang Long, had attacked from within and without, slaying the northern general Fang Xuedu. More than five thousand northern soldiers had perished, and the rest had surrendered. Song Jiang was overjoyed and said to his officers: "All this has been achieved through the strength of you, my brothers—together we have accomplished the great work of pacifying the rebels." He then carefully recorded the meritorious deeds of each officer, as well as the great achievements of Zhang Qing and Qiongying in capturing the rebel chieftains and destroying the rebel stronghold.
Three or four days later, Guan Sheng's forces finally arrived, and it was also reported that Prefect Chen's troops had come. Song Jiang led his officers out of the city to welcome them in, and after the courtesies were completed, Prefect Chen praised them, saying: "In the space of five months, you have accomplished an achievement unparalleled in this age. Upon hearing that the rebel chieftains have been captured, I have already dispatched a messenger with a memorial riding post-haste to the capital to report your victory. The court will surely bestow upon you noble titles and generous rewards." Song Jiang bowed twice and expressed his gratitude.
The next day, Qiongying came to report that she wished to go to Shishi Mountain in Taiyuan to search for her mother's remains and give them proper burial. Song Jiang immediately ordered Zhang Qing and Ye Yong to accompany her.
Song Jiang reported to Prefect Chen and had all of Tian Hu's palace buildings, with their bejeweled pavilions and emerald-green halls, burned to the ground. He then consulted with Prefect Chen on opening the granaries to relieve the people in various areas who had suffered from the warfare and fires. He wrote a letter to Grand Marshal Su and drafted a memorial to the court, and sent Dai Zong to set out that very day.
Dai Zong, carrying the memorial and documents, caught up with the memorial-bearing envoy sent by Prefect Chen, and together they entered the capital. They went first to Grand Marshal Su's residence, where, as before, they sought out Commandant Yang and presented the letter. Grand Marshal Su was overjoyed. The next morning at court, the memorials of both Grand Marshal Su and Prefect Chen were presented to the Emperor. The Daojun Emperor's countenance showed great pleasure, and he issued an edict ordering Song Jiang and his men to make arrangements and await their replacements, then return to the capital to receive titles and rewards. Dai Zong received this news, took his leave of Grand Marshal Su that same day, departed the capital, and by the afternoon of the following day had arrived at Weicheng to report to Prefect Chen and Vanguard Commander Song Jiang.
Chen Guan and Song Jiang then had the captured rebels and bogus officials—except for Tian Hu, Tian Bao, and Tian Biao, who were to be sent separately to the capital—all beheaded at the execution ground in Weicheng. The areas not yet recovered were Pu, Jie, and other prefectures and counties under Jinning. The rebel officials and corrupt functionaries, upon learning that Tian Hu had been captured, scattered in half and the other half voluntarily surrendered. Prefect Chen accepted all who surrendered and restored them to the status of law-abiding subjects. He then issued proclamations to every locality calling for the people's submission and reassurance. As for the remaining followers of the rebels who had not harmed anyone, they too were permitted to surrender and were restored to civilian life, with their property and farmland returned to them. Once the prefectures and counties had been recovered, garrison troops were assigned to each to protect the borders and keep the people in peace.
Now let us return to the Daojun Emperor, who had already issued an imperial edict and dispatched officials to go to Hebei to convey his commands to Chen Guan and the others. The next day, the Emperor visited the Military Academy. The assembled officials had already gathered, and Cai Jing was discussing military matters from his seat, with all listening respectfully. Among them, however, was one official who tilted his face upward, gazing at the corner of the room, paying him no heed. Cai Jing was furious and immediately demanded to know that official's name.
When one man sits in a corner with a sour face, the whole company loses its cheer. It was because Cai Jing sought this official's name that the Heavenly Gang and Earthly Star demons descended upon Zhen and Yi, and fierce warriors and mighty armies brought order to Chu and Ying. As for whom Cai Jing questioned about, let us listen to the explanation in the next chapter.
