Chapter 99
Here is the translation:
---
When Tian Hu received Ye Qing's report, he had it opened and handed to a literate attendant: "Read it aloud for Us." The document stated: "Your subject, Wu Li, has taken Quan Yu as his son-in-law by marriage into his household. This man is exceedingly valiant and has driven back the Song soldiers; Song Jiang and the others have withdrawn to defend Zhaode Prefecture. Your subject Wu Li now commands his daughter, Commandery Princess Qiongying, together with Quan Yu, to lead troops and recapture Zhaode City. I respectfully dispatch my steward Ye Qing to report this victory and to inform Your Majesty of the marriage arrangement, humbly begging Your Majesty's pardon for my presumption in arranging the match without prior authorization." When Tian Hu heard this, his anxious expression diminished by seventy percent. He immediately issued an edict, appointing Quan Yu to the post of Vanguard Prince-Consort for the Restoration and Pacification of the South, and ordered Ye Qing, together with two bogus Commanders, to carry the imperial decree, along with gifts of silk, brocade, and silver, to Xiangyuan County to bestow rewards upon the Prince-Consort. Ye Qing took his leave of Tian Hu and set out for Xiangyuan with the two bogus Commanders—no more of this.
Now it must be told that the previous day, Dai Zong, the "Marvelous Traveller," had received Commander Song Jiang's orders and had already delivered military dispatches to every prefecture and county. He had then departed to report to Lu Junyi at Fenyang Prefecture. The new officials appointed to the various prefectures and counties had been arriving one after another. The garrison commanders and assistants in each locality had handed over governance to the new officials, and the various generals, leading their troops, had assembled in stages at Zhaode Prefecture. The first contingent to arrive was led by Guan Sheng and Hu Yanzhou, garrison commanders of Weizhou, together with Sun Li, Zhu Tong, Yan Shun, and Ma Lin, garrison officials of Huguguan, and Wen Zhongrong and Cui Ye, garrison commanders of Baodu Mountain. After their troops entered the city and they had paid their respects to Chen the Prefectural Administrator and Song Jiang, they reported: "The naval commander Li Jun has learned that Lucheng has already been taken. He and Zhang Heng, Zhang Shun, Ruan Xiaoer, Ruan Xiaowu, Ruan Xiaoqi, Tong Wei, and Tong Meng are now commanding the naval vessels, proceeding from the Wei River out to the Yellow River, and from the Yellow River to the Lu River east of Lucheng County, where they are gathering to await orders." At this, Song Jiang laid out wine to renew old friendships. The following day, he ordered Guan Sheng, Hu Yanzhou, Wen Zhongrong, and Cui Ye to lead troops to Lucheng and instructed them to relay orders to the naval commander Li Jun and the others to cooperate with them and the troops of Su Chao and the rest, advancing to attack and seize Yushe, Dagu, and other counties, striking from behind the rebel lair at Weisheng Prefecture. They were to take the utmost care not to be negligent! For it was feared that the rebels, driven to desperation, might surrender to the Jin. Guan Sheng and the others obeyed these orders and departed. After this, the garrison officers of Lingchuan County, Li Ying and Chai Jin; those of Gaoping County, Shi Jin and Mu Hong; and those of Gaizhou, Hua Rong, Dong Ping, Du Xing, and Shi En, each handed over their posts to the newly arrived officials and came with their troops to pay their respects. They reported that Hua Rong and the others, while defending Gaizhou, had been attacked by the northern general Shan Shiqi, who, after his defeat at Huguguan, had gathered the remnants of his forces and joined with troops from Fushan County to raid Gaizhou. Hua Rong and the others had sprung ambushes from both directions, capturing Shan Shiqi alive and killing over two thousand men, whereupon Shan Shiqi surrendered. The remaining soldiers had scattered and fled in all directions. Hua Rong and the others then brought Shan Shiqi separately to pay his respects to Vanguard Commander Song Jiang, who ordered wine to be served in welcome. Song Jiang's forces remained encamped in Zhaode City, feigning fear of Zhang Qing and Qiongying in order to strengthen Tian Hu's confidence—no more of this.
Let us now turn to Lu Junyi and his forces, who had already taken Fenyang Prefecture. Tian Bao fled in defeat to Xiaoyi County, where he happened upon the arrival of Ma Ling's army. Ma Ling was a man from Zhuozhou who had long practiced sorcery. He rode upon two wheels of wind and fire, covering a thousand li in a single day, and for this reason men called him the "Divine Colt." He also possessed the Golden Brick Method, which was supremely lethal in striking men down. When he went into battle, a demonic eye would appear upon his forehead, and so men also called him the "Little Huaguang." His arts were second only to those of Qiao Daqing. He had two lieutenant generals under him, Wu Neng and Xu Jin, both of whom had learned Ma Ling's sorcery. Ma Ling now joined forces with Tian Bao and led Wu Neng, Xu Jin, Suo Xian, Dang Shiling, Ling Guang, Duan Ren, Miao Cheng, and Chen Xuan, along with thirty thousand fierce troops, to make camp ten li north of Fenyang City. The southern generals had suffered defeats in their engagements with Ma Ling and his forces over several days running. Lu Junyi had withdrawn his troops into Fenyang City and dared not engage them in battle, his only worry being that the northern army might come to besiege the city.
He was brooding over this difficulty when suddenly a soldier guarding the east gate came flying with a report: Song Jiang, the Vanguard Commander, had specially dispatched Gongsun Sheng and Qiao Daqing with two thousand troops to come to their aid. Lu Junyi at once ordered the gate opened and invited them in. After the greetings were concluded, Lu Junyi invited Gongsun Sheng to take the seat of honor, with Qiao Daqing next, and laid out wine for them. Lu Junyi explained: "Ma Ling's sorcery is fearsome. He has wounded the generals Lei Heng, Zheng Tianshou, Yang Xiong, Shi Xiu, Jiu Ting, Zou Yuan, Zou Run, Gong Wang, Ding Desun, and Shi Yong—more than ten officers in all. I, Lu, am at my wits' end, and now the two of you have arrived." Qiao Daqing said: "This humble Taoist and my master, having reported to the Vanguard Commander, have come here specially to capture him." He had scarcely finished speaking when a city guard came rushing with a report: Ma Ling was leading troops to attack the east gate; Wu Neng and Xu Jin were leading troops to the west gate; and Tian Bao together with Suo Xian, Dang Shiling, Ling Guang, and Duan Ren were leading troops to attack the north gate. Gongsun Sheng listened to this report and said: "This poor Taoist will go out the east gate to face Ma Ling. Brother Qiao, go out the west gate to capture Wu Neng and Xu Jin. Commander Lu, lead troops out the north gate to meet Tian Bao." Lu Junyi further ordered the four generals Huang Xin, Yang Zhi, Ou Peng, and Deng Fei to lead troops to assist Master Gongsun. Now Dai Zong, having heard that Ma Ling could also travel with supernatural speed, wished to go out with Gongsun Sheng as well, and Lu Junyi granted his request. He also ordered Chen Da, Yang Chun, Li Zhong, and Zhou Tong to lead troops to assist Master Qiao. Lu Junyi himself, together with Qin Ming, Xuan Zan, Hao Siwen, Han Tao, and Peng Qi, led troops out the south gate to meet Tian Bao. That day, outside Fenyang City, on the east, west, and north sides, banners darkened the sun and drums shook the heavens as battle raged simultaneously on all three fronts.
No account was given of the battles fought by Lu Junyi and the sorcerer Qiao Daoqing. Ma Ling, the "Supernal Colt," led his soldiers, beating the drums and waving the banners, reviling the enemy and challenging them to battle. The city gate was opened and the drawbridge was lowered. The officers and men of the Southern Army swarmed out of the city and drew up their troops in a single line, like a long snake formation. Ma Ling rode forward and, holding his halberd, shouted at the top of his voice: "You wretched defeated Han dogs! Give us back our cities at once! If you delay even a little, we'll leave not a single one of you alive!" Ou Peng and Deng Fei rode out side by side. "Your last hour has come!" they shouted. Ou Peng leveled his iron spear and Deng Fei brandished his iron chain. Both of them galloped straight at Ma Ling. Ma Ling raised his halberd to meet them. After ten exchanges or more, Ma Ling took out the golden brick and was about to hurl it at Ou Peng. At that moment, Gongsun Sheng rode up swiftly and raised his sword, working his magic. As Ma Ling's hand went up, Gongsun Sheng pointed his sword, and suddenly there was a sound like a clap of thunder. A red light shone everywhere, and Gongsun Sheng's sword was wreathed in flames. Ma Ling's golden brick fell to the ground, and he rolled over and vanished in an instant. Gongsun Sheng's magic powers were truly divine. In the blink of an eye, the soldiers, officers, and weapons of the Southern Army were all enveloped in flames, and the long snake formation was transformed into a fire dragon. Ma Ling's golden brick magic had been conquered by Gongsun Sheng's divine fire. Gongsun Sheng waved his horsehair whisk, and the soldiers closed in from front and rear. The Northern Army was utterly defeated. They were routed and scattered like falling stars and dispersed clouds, cut to pieces and broken in many places. Of every three soldiers, two were lost. Ma Ling fled for his life. Fortunately, he knew the magic of superhuman locomotion. He mounted his Wind and Fire Wheels and flew off toward the east. In the Southern Army's ranks, the "Marvelous Traveler" Dai Zong had already bound his magic horses and was using the same art. With a saber in his hand, he gave chase. In a moment, Ma Ling had covered more than twenty li, while Dai Zong had managed only sixteen or seventeen li. He could no longer see Ma Ling ahead of him. As Ma Ling flew on, he collided with a fat monk who rushed at him from the front. The monk struck Ma Ling down with a single blow from his Buddhist staff, seized him then and there, and took him prisoner.
While the monk was interrogating Ma Ling, Dai Zong arrived and saw that the monk had captured Ma Ling. When Dai Zong went up to look at the monk, he found it was the "Flowery Monk" Lu Zhishen. Dai Zong asked in surprise, "Master, how did you get here?" Lu Zhishen replied, "And where is 'here'?" Dai Zong said, "This is the eastern outskirts of Fenyang Prefecture. This is Ma Ling, a Northern general. His magic arts were just broken on the battlefield by Gongsun Yiqing, and I was in pursuit. He moved so fast, but you managed to capture him, Master. It's as if you had dropped from the sky!" Lu Zhishen said with a laugh, "This monk didn't come down from heaven, but he did come up from under the ground." The two of them tied up Ma Ling, and the three of them set out on foot straight for Fenyang Prefecture. Dai Zong then asked how Lu Zhishen had come to be there. As they walked along, Lu Zhishen told him: "The other day, Tian Hu sent a wretched woman to fight outside the walls of Xiangyuan. She could also hurl stones and wounded many of our chieftains. This monk went into the battle to kill, and was just about to capture that wretched woman, when he failed to notice a hole hidden in the tall grass. Both his feet lost their footing and he tumbled right down into the hole. It was some time before he reached the bottom, but fortunately he was not injured in the fall. When he looked around the hole, he noticed another opening nearby, through which light shone. He went in to take a look, and it was strange—there was a sky and a moon, just like the world above, and also villages and houses. The people there were all busy with their affairs, and when they saw this monk, they simply smiled. He didn't ask them any questions, either, but just went on his way to find someone to capture. After passing through a crowded area, he came to a quiet, deserted wilderness where no one lived. He walked for a long time and came upon a thatched hut, in which he heard the clack-clack of a wooden fish. He went inside and saw a monk just like himself, sitting cross-legged on the ground, chanting a sutra. He asked the monk the way out. The monk replied, 'Come from the place you came from, and go to the place you must go to.' This monk didn't understand those two sentences and became impatient. The monk said with a smile, 'Do you know where this place is?' This monk said, 'How would I know about such a damned place?' The monk smiled again and said, 'From the highest heaven to the lowest hell, the universe is vast and far-reaching, and no one can know it all.' He also said, 'All people have minds, and where there are minds there are thoughts. Hell and paradise are both born of a thousand thoughts. Therefore, the three realms are nothing but mind, and the myriad things are nothing but consciousness. If not a single thought is born, the six paths are all extinguished, and reincarnation ceases.' When this monk heard these words, which were clear and enlightening, he bowed deeply to the monk. The monk laughed loudly and said, 'You have entered the Well of Karmic Entanglement and will hardly escape the Heaven of Desire and Delusion. I will show you the way.' The monk then led him out of the hut. After only three or five steps, he said to him, 'From here we part, and we will meet again one day.' He pointed forward with his hand and said, 'If you go that way, you will find a supernatural horse.' When this monk looked back, the monk had disappeared. Suddenly his eyes were dazzled by a light, and the scenery was completely different. He had come across this man. This monk saw that his movements were suspicious, so he struck him down with a single blow from his staff. He didn't know how he had come to be here. The climate here was also different from that around Zhaode Prefecture. The peach and plum trees had leaves only this large, but not a single flower bud." Dai Zong said with a smile, "It is already late March; most of the peach and plum blossoms have already fallen." Lu Zhishen refused to believe it and argued, "It's only late February. I just fell into the hole a little while ago—how can it already be late March?" When Dai Zong heard this, he was greatly astonished. The two men escorted Ma Ling and went straight to Fenyang City.
By this time, Gongsun Sheng had already routed the northern army and led his troops back into the city. Lu Junyi, Qin Ming, Xuan Zan, Hao Siwen, Han Tao, and Peng Qi had slain the three generals Su Xian, Dang Shiling, and Ling Guang, and pursued Tian Biao and Duan Ren for more than ten li, scattering the northern forces. Tian Biao, together with Duan Ren, Chen Xuan, and Miao Cheng, led the remnant troops and fled northward. Lu Junyi was drawing his forces back to the city when he encountered Qiao Daoqing, who had defeated Wu Neng and Xu Jin, and who was arriving in pursuit with Chen Da, Yang Chun, Li Zhong, and Zhou Tong at the head of his army. The southern forces attacked from both routes, and the northern army suffered a terrible defeat, with a great number slain. Wu Neng was hacked from his horse by Yang Chun with a great pike sword, and Xu Jin was stabbed to death by Hao Siwen. They seized countless horses, suits of armor, golden drums, and saddles. Lu Junyi joined forces with Qiao Daoqing, and they entered the city in triumph. Scarcely had Lu Junyi arrived at the prefectural offices when Lu Zhishen and Dai Zong were brought Ma Ling as a captive. Lu Junyi was overjoyed and hastened to ask, "Why have you come here, Brother Zhishen? How did Brother Song fare in his battle with that wretch Wu Li?" Lu Zhishen then recounted in full the story of falling into the well and Song Jiang's engagement with Wu Li, and all the officers under Lu Junyi were filled with astonishment.
Lu Junyi personally loosened Ma Ling's bonds. Ma Ling had already heard Lu Zhishen's account on the road, and now seeing such generous and honorable treatment from Lu Junyi, he prostrated himself and offered to surrender. Lu Junyi rewarded the officers and men of the three armies. The next day, the garrison officers of Jinning Prefecture, having been relieved by newly appointed officials, all proceeded to Fenyang to await orders. Lu Junyi sent Dai Zong and Ma Ling to report the victory to Commander Song Jiang, and that same day he and Deputy Army Counselor Zhu Wu discussed further advances—of which we need say nothing further.
Now Ma Ling had learned from Dai Zong the method of traveling a thousand li in a single day, and the two of them reached the vanguard camp of Song Jiang in just one day. They entered the stockade, presented themselves, and reported every detail of the victory. When Song Jiang heard Lu Zhishen's account, he was astonished and overjoyed. He went in person to report the victory to Pacifier Chen—but of this, no more.
Let us return to Tian Bao, who together with Duan Ren, Chen Xuan, and Miao Cheng led the shattered remnant of their troops—hastening like dogs bereft of their home, scurrying like fish escaped from the net—to Weisheng, where they appeared before Tian Hu and wept as they recounted the loss of their army and territory. Then a bogus official of the Privy Council rushed into the inner court and reported: "Your Majesty, for two days the meteoric couriers have brought dispatches flying in like flakes of snow, reporting that Grand Commander Ma Ling has been captured. The armies of Guan Sheng and Huyan Zhuo have already surrounded Yuxie County, and the armies of Lu Junyi and others have already breached the city walls of Jiexiu County. Only at Xiangyuan, under the command of Uncle State Wu, have there been repeated reports of victory, and the Song armies dare not look him in the face." When Tian Hu heard this report, he was greatly alarmed and at a loss. The assembled civil and military officials deliberated and wished to surrender to the Jin people in the north. Then the bogus Right Chancellor and Grand Preceptor Bian Xiang rebuked the assembled officials and stepped forward, saying: "Though the Song armies have three routes of advance, here at Weisheng we are encircled by ten thousand mountains, and our grain stores are sufficient for two years. We have over two hundred thousand elite Imperial Guard troops. To the east lies Wuxiang and to the west lies Qin Yuan, each with fifty thousand elite soldiers. Behind us are Taiyuan County, Qi County, Lin County, and Dagu County—all with strong walls and ample provisions, and all still defensible. As the old saying goes: 'Better to be the beak of a chicken than the rump of an ox.'" Tian Hu hesitated and had not yet replied when it was reported that Governor Ye Qing had arrived. Tian Hu at once ordered him to be admitted. When Ye Qing had finished his obeisance, he reported: "The Princess and the Prince Consort have repeatedly won victories and captured many men. Their military might has been greatly roused, and their army has already reached Zhaode Prefecture. They were about to lay siege to the city when Uncle State Wu happened to fall ill with a cold and fever and could not command the troops. I humbly beg Your Majesty to send additional able generals and elite soldiers to assist the Princess and the Prince Consort in recovering Zhaode Prefecture." Then the bogus Commander Fan Quan stepped forward and said: "I have heard that the Princess and the Prince Consort are exceedingly valiant and that the Song armies dare not look them in the face. If Your Majesty were personally to lead the expedition, with mighty soldiers and fierce generals to assist them, the great work of restoration would surely be accomplished. I am willing to assist the Crown Prince in governing the realm." Tian Hu approved the proposal. Now it happened that Fan Quan's daughter possessed a beauty that could topple kingdoms. Fan Quan had presented her to Tian Hu, who doted on her exceedingly. Therefore, whatever Fan Quan said, Tian Hu never failed to follow. On this day, Fan Quan had received a heavy bribe from Ye Qing, and seeing the growing power of the Song armies, he seized the opportunity to sell out his country.
Tian Hu thereupon assigned ten officers under Bian Xiang and thirty thousand elite soldiers to go and oppose the armies of Lu Junyi, Hua Rong, and others. He also ordered bogus Grand Marshal Fang Xuedu to lead ten officers and thirty thousand elite soldiers to Yuxie to oppose the armies of Guan Sheng and others. Tian Hu himself took personal command of bogus Ministers of State Li Tianxi and Zheng Zhiyuan, Privy Councilors Xue Shi and Lin Xin, Commanders Hu Ying and Tang Xian, along with Palace Commandants, Imperial Guard instructors, Training Commissioners, Commandants, Generals, and other officers, selecting a hundred thousand elite soldiers. He chose an auspicious day to sacrifice to the banner and set forth, slaughtering cattle and horses to feast the three armies. He further issued an edict commanding his brothers Tian Bao and Tian Biao, together with Commander Fan Quan and many other civil and military officials, to assist Crown Prince Tian Ding in governing the realm. When Ye Qing received this news, he secretly dispatched trusted followers with all speed to Xiangyuan City to inform Zhang Qiong and Qiong Ying. Zhang Qing ordered Jie Zhen and Jie Bao to let themselves down from the city walls by rope and ride by night to report to Vanguard Commander Song Jiang.
Bian Xiang had been waiting for the military tally, selecting troops and horses, and after three days of preparation, he finally led his vanguard and various subordinate commanders—Fan Yuming, Yu Defuan, Fu Xiang, Gu Kai, Kou Chen, Guan Yan, Feng Yi, Lü Zhen, Ji Wenbing, and An Shilong—with thirty thousand troops out through the east gate of Weisheng Prefecture. The army was divided into two columns. The advance column, consisting of Fan Yuming, Yu Defuan, Feng Yi, and Gu Kai, led five thousand troops. They had just reached Mianshan in the territory of Qinyuan County, where there was a great forest at the foot of the mountain slope. The vanguard had barely passed the edge of the woods when a single beat of a gong rang out, and from behind the trees at the foot of the slope, a force of soldiers burst forth. It was Song Jiang, who had received intelligence from Zhang Qing, and had secretly dispatched Hua Rong, Dong Ping, Lin Chong, Shi Jin, Du Xing, and Mu Hong to lead five thousand elite cavalry, their horses' bells removed and the riders clad in soft armor, riding with all haste through the night to this spot. One general spurred his horse to the fore, grasping a steel spear in each hand. This was Dong Ping, known as the "Double-Spearman," the foremost vanguard fighter in the Song army, who bellowed: "Where do your troops come from? Why not surrender at once—what are you waiting for?" Fan Yuming cursed loudly: "You watery bandits—why have you seized our cities?" Dong Ping flew into a rage. "The imperial army has arrived, and you still resist!" He raised his horse and leveled his twin spears straight at Fan Yuming. Fan Yuming galloped forward with his spear to meet him. The two generals fought for more than twenty exchanges before Fan Yuming's strength flagged and he could no longer parry. Dong Ping thrust his spear into Fan Yuming's throat, and he toppled from his horse. Feng Yi, beside himself with fury, leveled an iron spear and charged straight at Dong Ping. But "Little Li Guang" Hua Rong spurred his horse forward to meet him. After more than ten exchanges, Hua Rong turned his horse and fled toward his own lines. Feng Yi galloped in pursuit, but Hua Rong held his flowered spear, nocked an arrow, and drew his bow to full span. He twisted his body around, took careful aim at Feng Yi from close range, and loosed a single arrow that struck Feng Yi square in the face. His helmet flew backward, his feet kicked at empty air, and he crashed to the ground with a thud. Hua Rong wheeled his horse and finished him with a spear thrust. Dong Ping, Lin Chong, Shi Jin, Mu Hong, and Du Xing then led their troops in a sweeping charge. Gu Kai had already been run through by Lin Chong. Yu Defuan fell from his horse and was trampled to death beneath the hooves of men and steeds. The northern forces suffered a devastating defeat—more than half of their five thousand troops were killed, and the rest scattered in all directions. Hua Rong's soldiers seized the enemy's drums and horses and pursued the northern troops for five li before encountering the main force of Bian Xiang.
Bian Xiang had been raised a farmer. His two arms possessed the strength of an ox, and his martial skill was refined—he was a premier general among the rebels. Now the two armies faced each other, banners and drums in view. From both formations, painted horns sounded in unison and alligator-skin drums beat in rapid succession. The northern general Bian Xiang sat astride his horse at the front, wearing a golden helmet with phoenix-wing crests and silver fish-scale armor. He stood nine feet tall, with a three-pointed beard covering his mouth, a square face and broad shoulders, brows raised and eyes round. He rode a wave-charging battle steed and wielded a mountain-splitting great axe. On either side stood the four puppet Tongzhi officers Fu Xiang, Guan Yan, Kou Chen, and Lü Zhen, and behind them followed other puppet commanders, military supervisors, garrison commanders, and militia officers. The formation was arranged with perfect precision. From the southern formation, "Nine-Dragon" Shi Jin spurred his horse out and shouted: "Who is the general before me? Dismount and surrender at once, lest you defile my blade!" Bian Xiang laughed broadly. "Even jars and pots have two ears. Surely you have heard the name of Bian Xiang?" Shi Jin roared: "Traitorous wretch! The imperial army has arrived, and you still resist!" He raised his horse and brandished his three-pointed, double-bladed eight-ring saber, charging straight at Bian Xiang. Bian Xiang swung his great axe to meet him. The two horses crossed, the two weapons clashed—saber and axe flashing in all directions, hooves churning in confusion—and they fought for more than thirty exchanges without a victor. Hua Rong, who admired Bian Xiang's martial prowess, refused to shoot a cold arrow from afar. Instead he spurred his horse forward with spear in hand to join the battle. Bian Xiang matched the two generals and fought another thirty exchanges without yielding. The northern troops, fearing Bian Xiang might fall, hastily beat the gong to withdraw. Hua Rong and Dong Ping, seeing the sky grow dark and knowing they were outnumbered, did not pursue. They too pulled their forces back south, and both armies made camp more than ten li apart.
That night a great south wind rose, and thick clouds poured ink-black across the sky. At midnight came a torrential rain and thunderous lightning. By this time, Tian Hu, leading his numerous officers, commanders, and troops, had already traveled more than a hundred li from Weisheng city and had camped for the night. In his tent, the palace attendants and concubines who had accompanied the army, along with the Beautiful Lady Fei, were feasting and making merry. That night they too encountered the heavy rain. From then on, the rains poured without stopping for five days straight. Above them, the rain canopies leaked; below them, everything was a sodden mess. The soldiers could not cook or find firm ground to stand on. Their horn bows softened and their arrow fletching fell away. The troops of every camp could only sit idle within their encampments—but no more of this.
Let me tell what happened next. Suo Chao, Xu Ning, Shan Tinggui, Wei Dingguo, Tang Long, Tang Bin, Geng Gong, and other generals joined Guan Sheng, Hu Yanwen, Wen Zhongrong, and Cui Ye's land forces, along with the naval leaders such as Li Jun and his fleet. The generals took counsel together and left Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo to garrison Lucheng. Guan Sheng and the rest of the commanders advanced by both land and water, ships and cavalry moving together, and smashed through Yushu County. They then left Suo Chao and Tang Long to hold the city. Guan Sheng and his forces rode their victory forward with the force of splitting bamboo, and also took Dagu County, killing the defending officers and officials. The remaining troops under the petty generals surrendered beyond counting. Guan Sheng pacified the soldiers and civilians, rewarded the troops, and sent men to Song Jiang's vanguard headquarters to report the victory. The following day, Guan Sheng's forces also encountered heavy rain and had to encamp in the city, unable to advance. Suddenly a report came: "Lu Junyi the Vanguard has left Xuan Zan, Hao Siwen, Lü Fang, and Guo Sheng in command of troops to garrison Fenyang Prefecture. Lu Junyi and his men have already taken the counties of Jiexiu and Pingyao, and left Han Tao and Peng Qi to garrison Jiexiu County, and Kong Ming and Kong Liang to garrison Pingyao County. Commander Lu leads his many officers and troops and is besieging Taiyuan County, but because of the rain he cannot attack." It so happened that the naval leader Li Jun was in the city and heard this report. He hurried to Guan Sheng and said: "Commander Lu and his men are now encountering continuous heavy rain, and the waters have risen greatly, so the three armies cannot remain in place. What if the enemy selects desperate warriors to sally forth from the city and attack us? I have a plan and wish to go discuss it with Commander Lu." Guan Sheng gave his assent.
At once, the "Dragon of the Mixed Waters" Li Jun took his leave of Guan Sheng and left the city. He ordered Tong Wei and Tong Meng to take command of the naval vessels, while he himself, together with the two Zhangs and the three Ruan brothers, led two thousand sailors, wearing straw hats and capes, braving the wind and rain, taking back roads at full speed to Lu Junyi's camp, where he entered the encampment and paid his respects. Without waiting for pleasantries, he spoke in private with Lu Junyi for a short while. Lu Junyi was overjoyed and immediately ordered the soldiers to fell trees in the rain and make rafts. Li Jun and his men went their separate ways to carry out their tasks—no more of this.
Let us return to the defenders within Taiyuan city. The garrison generals Zhang Xiong, who had been falsely appointed to the post of Palace Commander, Xiang Zhong, and Xu Yue, who had been falsely appointed to the post of Military Commissioner—these three were the most murderous among the rebels. Their soldiers were every one of them savage and violent. The common people in the city could no longer endure their tyranny; they abandoned their homes and fled in all directions, seven or eight out of every ten having already gone. Zhang Xiong and his men were now hemmed in by the great army and refused to yield, relying on their defenses. Zhang Xiong took counsel with Xiang Zhong and Xu Yue. They observed that with the current heavy rain, the Song troops had nothing to plunder, the waterlogged ground was unfavorable to them, firewood and fodder were scarce, and the army had no heart to remain. If they made a swift sally, total victory would be assured. It was then the first ten days of the fourth month. Zhang Xiong was about to divide his forces and charge out through the four gates to strike the Song army when suddenly he heard gongs resounding on all sides. Zhang Xiong hurried to the watchtower to look out beyond the walls, and saw the Song soldiers wearing straw sandals in the rain, all climbing to high ground and hilltops. Zhang Xiong was just growing alarmed and suspicious when he heard the banks of the Zhibo Canal, and three points to the east and west, erupt with a roar that shook the heavens, like the sound of thousands of troops and horses charging at a gallop. In an instant, angry waves and furious torrents came flying in—like the surging tide of the eighth month autumn flood, like the Yellow River pouring down from the sky. Truly it was: surpassing the merit of the city walls of Zhibo, outdoing the stratagem of sandbags of Huaiyin. As yet we know not how far these waters would reach—let us hear the explanation in the next chapter.
