柳腰端跨,疊勝帶紫色飄搖;

Chapter 98
It was said that the State Uncle Wu Li ordered the Commandery Princess Qiongying to serve as vanguard while he himself commanded the main army to follow behind. Qiongying was just sixteen years of age, a maiden as beautiful as a flower, and she was not actually Wu Li's birth daughter. Her original family name was Chou. Her father was Chou Shen, and their ancestral home was in Jiexiu County, Fenyang Prefecture, at a place called Mianshang. That Mianshang was the very same place that, in the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Wen of Jin granted as a fief to Jie Zitui after failing to find him—that was the Mianshang in question. The Chou Shen family possessed considerable wealth. Shen was already fifty years of age and still had no sons. Having also lost his wife, he remarried—taking as his second wife the daughter of Song Youlie of Pingyao County. She gave birth to Qiongying. When Qiongying reached the age of ten, Song Youlie died, and Madame Song at once set out with her husband Chou Shen to attend the funeral. Pingyao was a neighboring county to Jiexiu, some seventy-odd *li* away. Because the journey was long and the departure hasty, Madame Song left Qiongying at home, instructing the steward Ye Qing and his wife to look after and attend to her. She and her husband had only reached midway when a band of strongmen suddenly burst forth, killed Chou Shen, dispersed the estate servants, and carried Madame Song off. The servants fled back and reported this to Ye Qing. Now although Ye Qing was merely a steward, he possessed a certain sense of honor and righteousness, and he also knew how to wield a spear and swing a staff. His wife, Madame An, was exceedingly prudent. Ye Qing at once informed the Chou family relatives, filed a report with the authorities to pursue the bandits, and arranged the burial of their master's body. The Chou relatives discussed installing a member of the same clan to inherit the family estate. Ye Qing and his wife, the couple, looked after the young mistress Qiongying.
More than a year passed when Tian Hu rose in rebellion, seized Weisheng, and dispatched Wu Li with troops to plunder and raid. They reached Mianshang in Jiexiu, robbing property and seizing men and women. The Chou heir was killed by the disorderly soldiers, and Ye Qing, his wife, and the girl Qiongying were all carried off. Wu Li too had no heir. Seeing that Qiongying had clear eyes and a refined appearance, he brought her to see his wife, Madame Ni. Madame Ni had never borne children, and the moment she saw Qiongying, she loved her dearly, as though she were her own flesh and blood. Qiongying had been clever from childhood, quick-witted and nimble in every way. She reckoned that she could not escape from this place, and having no relatives in sight, seeing that Madame Ni loved her, she spoke to Madame Ni and asked Wu Li to bring in Ye Qing's wife, Madame An. Thus Madame An was able to remain with Qiongying at all times, inseparable whether sitting or lying down. When Ye Qing had been captured, he had wanted to escape, but he reasoned: "Qiongying is young. The master and mistress of the family have only this one drop of blood. If I leave, I shall not know whether she lives or dies. Fortunately my wife is there. If an opportunity arises, we may together free ourselves from this calamity, and then the master, though dead in the world below, may close his eyes in peace." Therefore he submitted to Wu Li. Having distinguished himself in battle, Wu Li returned Madame An to Ye Qing. From then on, Madame An was permitted to come and go in the marshal's headquarters, passing messages to Qiongying. Wu Li also memorialized Tian Hu and had Ye Qing appointed as a steward.
Later, Ye Qing was sent by Wu Li to Shishi Mountain to gather timber and stone. A soldier under his command pointed down from a hillside and said: "There is a fine stone here, white as frost and snow, without the slightest flaw. The locals tried to quarry it, but a thunderclap struck and killed several of the stonecutters with fright—they only revived after half a day's time. Because of this, the people all bite their fingers in mutual warning and dare not approach it." Ye Qing, hearing this, went with the soldiers to look at the foot of the hill. All of them raised a shout and cried out: "Strange! Just now it was a white stone—how has it turned into the corpse of a woman?" Ye Qing stepped forward and examined it carefully. Most strange indeed—it was the body of his former mistress, Madame Song. Her face was still as though alive, and the wounds on her head and face appeared to be from falling and striking the hill in a plunge. Ye Qing wept in astonishment, at a loss what to do, when a soldier from his own unit—who had originally been one of Tian Hu's cavalry scouts—explained in detail the circumstances of Madame Song's capture and death: "When the Great King first raised his forces, in the Jiexiu area, he captured this woman and intended to make her his bride in the stronghold. The woman tricked the Great King into untying her bonds. When they reached this spot, the woman threw herself from the high hill and died from the impact. The Great King, seeing that she had killed herself, ordered me to go down and strip her clothes and jewelry. It was I who helped her onto the horse, and it was I who stripped her clothes. I recognized her face clearly—it is truly and verily her, a thousand times over. It has been more than three years now, so how is it that the corpse remains perfectly preserved?" When Ye Qing heard this, he swallowed all his endless tears back into his belly. He said to the soldiers: "I recognize her too—she is the daughter of old Song, my former neighbor." Ye Qing ordered the soldiers to bring earth to cover it, but when he stepped forward to look again, it was once more a white stone. All were greatly astonished and sighed, then went about their stone-quarrying work. When the task was complete, Ye Qing returned to Weisheng and told Madame An to secretly convey to Qiongying the story of how Tian Hu had killed Chou Shen, carried off Madame Song, and how Madame Song had preserved her chastity by dashing herself to death.
When Qiongying learned this news, it was as though a myriad arrows had pierced her heart. Day and night she swallowed her sobs and shed secret tears, thinking constantly of avenging her parents and never forgetting the debt. From that time on, whenever she closed her eyes each night, she would see a divine being who said, "If you wish to avenge your parents, I shall teach you martial arts." Qiongying was clever and quick of mind; upon waking she remembered everything, and so she quietly took a staff, barred her door, and practiced in her room. As days went by, her skills grew refined and practiced. Before she knew it, it had reached the last month of winter in the fourth year of the Xuanhe reign.
One evening, Qiongying happened to doze off at her desk when suddenly she heard a gust of wind and noticed an exotic fragrance strike her nostrils. She saw a refined scholar wearing a folded-corner turban, leading a young general in a green robe. They came to teach Qiongying the art of hurling stones as projectiles. The scholar then said to Qiongying, "I have specially gone to Gaoping and brought the 'Swift Star' here to teach you extraordinary arts, to rescue you from the tiger's lair and to help you avenge your parents. This general is also your predestined mate from a former life." When Qiongying heard the words "predestined mate from a former life," she was overcome with shame and quickly covered her face with her sleeve. The moment she moved, she knocked the scissors on the desk, which clanged loudly. She started awake—the cold moon and dying lamp were still before her eyes. It seemed like a dream and yet not a dream. Qiongying sat dazedly, lost in thought for a long while, before finally resting.
The next day, Qiongying still remembered the technique of hurling stones. She went to the wall and picked up a round stone the size of a hen's egg. Without knowing whether her aim was true, she tried hitting the chiwen—the roof ornament—on the ridge of her bedchamber. She struck it squarely. With a loud crack, the chiwen was smashed to pieces, fragments scattering to the ground. This alarmed Ni Shi, who came quickly to inquire. Qiongying made up a clever excuse: "Last night I dreamed a divine being said, 'Your father is destined for princely rank. I have come specially to teach you extraordinary arts and martial skills to aid your father's success.' I just tried hurling a stone, and it happened to hit the chiwen." Ni Shi was amazed and reported this to Wu Li. Wu Li, however, was unwilling to believe it. He immediately summoned Qiongying for questioning and tested her with spears, swords, halberds, staves, cudgels, tridents, and rakes—she proved expert with every weapon. Moreover, her stone-hitting skill struck true every single time. Wu Li was greatly astonished and thought to himself, "I truly have fortune—Heaven has sent an extraordinary person to assist me." From then on he spent every day teaching Qiongying, riding horses and testing swords.
Before long, news of Qiongying's skills spread beyond Wu Li's household and stirred all the people of Weisheng city. They called her "Qiongying the Arrowhead." At this time Wu Li wished to select a fine husband to match with Qiongying. Qiongying said to Ni Shi, "If I am to be matched, it must be with someone who can also hurl stones. If I am given to anyone else, I shall simply die." Ni Shi relayed this to Wu Li. Wu Li found Qiongying's requirements too difficult and abandoned the matter of selecting a husband. Now, thinking of the words "prince" and "marquis," he harbored ambitions. He therefore recommended Qiongying as a vanguard commander, hoping to exploit the conflict between the two sides and advance his own cause. Wu Li selected troops and officers, departed Weisheng, assigned five thousand elite soldiers to Qiongying as vanguard, and led the main army himself in pursuit.
Leaving aside Wu Li and Qiongying's advance, we return to Song Jiang and the others at Zhaode, where they waited to receive Governor Chen. More than ten days passed before word arrived that Governor Chen's army had arrived. Song Jiang led the other generals out beyond the city walls to greet him from afar. They entered Zhaode Prefecture and rested there, making it the temporary headquarters of the army. All the officers and chiefs came to pay their respects, and the ceremonies were concluded. Although Governor Chen had long known of Song Jiang and the others' loyalty and righteousness, he had never had the chance to meet Song Jiang face to face. Now, seeing Song Jiang's humility, courtesy, and benevolence, he respected him even more and said, "The Son of Heaven, knowing that the vanguard has repeatedly performed extraordinary deeds, has specially sent me here to supervise and to bring rewards of gold, silver, and silk bolts, transported by cart for distribution." Song Jiang and the others bowed in thanks, saying: "We are deeply grateful to the Governor for his strong recommendations. Today we receive these generous favors, all owing to the Governor's grace. We receive the Emperor's favor from above and the Governor's virtue below. Even if we were to die covering the ground with our livers and brains, we could never repay this." Governor Chen said, "You generals have long since established great merit. When you return to the capital with your troops, the Son of Heaven will certainly employ you with great responsibility." Song Jiang bowed again in thanks and said: "I ask the Governor to remain and garrison Zhaode. I shall divide my forces to attack Tian Hu's lair, so that he cannot look after both head and tail." Governor Chen said: "When I left the capital, I had already memorialized the Son of Heaven. For all the prefectures and counties recently captured by the vanguard that now lack officials, appointments have been ordered to be made swiftly by the relevant ministry, with strict deadlines for departure. They will arrive before long." Song Jiang distributed the rewards to the officers and soldiers and at the same time wrote dispatches, sending the "Magic Traveller" Dai Zong to relay orders to the garrison commanders in each prefecture, subprefecture, and county. As soon as the new officials arrived, they were to hand over their posts and bring their troops to receive further orders. After delivering the orders to each prefecture, he was also to go to Bingyang and gather intelligence on military developments. Song Jiang also submitted to Governor Chen the merits of the surrendered Hebei generals, including Tang Bin, and recommended Jin Ding and Huang Yue to garrison Hugua and Baodu respectively, reliving Sun Li, Zhu Tong, and other officers so they could be called to service. Governor Chen agreed to everything.
Suddenly a scout riding a swift horse arrived and reported: "Tian Hu has sent Ma Ling to lead officers and troops to relieve Fenyang. He has also sent his uncle of the state, Wu Li, together with Princess Qiongying, leading officers and troops, who have advanced from the east and reached Xiangyuan." When Song Jiang heard this, he consulted with Wu Yong and assigned officers to meet the enemy. The surrendered general Qiao Daoqing spoke up: "Ma Ling has long practiced sorcery. He also knows the magic-traveling method and conceals golden bricks to strike people with, hitting his target every time. This humble way has been received into the vanguard's service by the commander but has yet to exert any effort. I wish to go with my master Gongsun Yiqing to Fenyang and persuade him to surrender." Song Jiang was overjoyed and immediately assigned two thousand troops for Gongsun Sheng and Qiao Daoqing to lead. The two took leave of Song Jiang and set out with their army for Fenyang that very day.
Then Song Jiang gave orders that Suo Chao, Xu Ning, Shan Tinggui, Wei Dingguo, Tang Long, Tang Bin, and Geng Gong were to lead twenty thousand troops and attack Lucheng County. He further ordered Wang Ying, Hu Sanniang, Sun Xin, and Gu Dasao to lead a thousand cavalry as an advance scouting party to probe the strength of the northern army. Song Jiang took his leave of Prefect Chen, and set out northward with Wu Yong, Lin Chong, Zhang Qing, Lu Zhishen, Wu Song, Li Kui, Bao Xu, Fan Rui, Xiang Cong, Li Gun, Liu Tang, Jie Zhen, Jie Bao, Ling Zhen, Pei Xuan, Xiao Rang, Song Qing, Jin Dajian, An Daoquan, Jiang Jing, Yu Baosi, Wang Dingliu, Meng Kang, Le He, Duan Jingzhu, Zhu Gui, Huangfu Duan, Hou Jian, Cai Fu, Cai Qing, and the recently surrendered general Sun An—in all, thirty-one officers of various ranks, and thirty-five thousand troops—departing from Zhaode.
The advance scouting party led by Wang Ying and the others had reached the territory of Xiangyuan County, north of Wuyin Mountain, when they encountered the northern generals Ye Qing and Sheng Ben, who had also been sent to scout. The two forces collided, beating drums and waving banners. The northern general Sheng Ben took the lead, sitting astride his horse at the front. From the Song formation, Wang Ying spurred his horse forward into the battle line. Without a word, he leveled his spear and charged straight at Sheng Ben. Both armies roared. Sheng Ben raised his spear and rode to meet him. After the two generals had fought more than ten exchanges, Hu Sanniang spurred her horse forward, sword in hand, to aid her husband in the fight. Sheng Ben could not withstand two opponents. He wheeled his horse and fled. Hu Sanniang gave chase, swung her sword, and cut Sheng Ben down from his horse. Wang Ying and the others drove their troops forward in a sweeping attack. Ye Qing dared no longer resist and hastily withdrew his men. The Song soldiers pursued and killed over five hundred of the enemy troops; the rest scattered in all directions. Ye Qing managed to escape with barely a hundred horsemen, fleeing to a position twenty *li* south of Xiangyuan City, where Qiongying's army had already made camp.
It turned out that Ye Qing had been transferred by Tian Hu half a year earlier, together with the chief commander Xu Wei, to garrison Xiangyuan. Recently, upon learning that Qiongying was leading the vanguard, Ye Qing had reported to Xu Wei and taken his own troops out on a reconnaissance mission, hoping to seize the opportunity to see his master's daughter. Xu Wei had also ordered the lieutenant Sheng Ben to accompany him—only for Sheng Ben to be killed by Hu Sanniang, just as Qiongying's forces arrived. Ye Qing entered the camp and presented himself to his master's daughter. He saw that she had grown into a young woman; though female, she carried herself with a martial air and looked every inch a general. Qiongying recognized Ye Qing, dismissed her attendants, and said to him, "Though I have today left the tiger's den, I have only five thousand troops under my command. How can I avenge my parents? If I try to flee, and they discover it, I will only bring disaster upon myself. I was in the midst of deliberating when you arrived." Ye Qing said, "I have been pondering a plan, but I have found no way forward. Should an opportunity arise, I will report to you at once." Before he finished speaking, a sudden report came: the southern army's officers had led their troops in pursuit and were approaching. Qiongying donned her armor, mounted her horse, and led her troops to meet the enemy.
The two armies faced each other, banners and drums in full view. Battle formations were drawn up on both sides. On the northern side, from beneath the gate-banner at the front, a handsome young female general rode forth on a silver-maned horse. Her appearance was thus:
Golden hairpins adorned with phoenixes, set against clouds of dark hair;
Silver armor gleaming, outshining the snows of winter.
Her stirrup shoes tipped with crimson, her hand fair as tender jade wielding a painted halberd.
A willow waist astride the saddle, her purple sash fluttering;
A lithe and graceful form, her embroidered robe enveloped in rosy clouds.
A face blooming like the peach blossoms of the third month,
Eyebrows sweeping like the willow leaves of early spring.
Hidden in a brocade pouch: the stones that strike down warriors—a maiden general of sixteen summers.
The banner before the female general read clearly: "Pacification of the South Vanguard General, Commandery Princess Qiongying." When the southern officers had taken a look, they all cheered in admiration. On both sides, the painted-skin drums thundered to the heavens, and embroidered banners dazzled the eyes. "Short-Statured Tiger" Wang Ying saw that she was a beautiful woman and spurred his horse forward into the battle line. He flew at Qiongying with his spear leveled. Both armies roared. Qiongying rode to meet him with her halberd in hand. After the two generals had fought more than ten exchanges, Wang Aihu could no longer rein in his wandering mind—his spear technique fell into disarray. Qiongying thought, "This wretch is insufferable!" She spotted a gap in his defense and with a single thrust of her halberd pierced Wang Ying in the left leg. Wang Ying's feet left the stirrups, his helmet fell over his face, and he tumbled from his horse. Hu Sanniang, seeing her husband wounded, cursed, "You thieving, wretched little strutter—how dare you be so insolent!" She flew out on horseback to rescue Wang Ying. Qiongying leveled her halberd and engaged her. Wang Ying struggled on the ground, unable to rise. The northern soldiers surged forward to seize him, but Sun Xin and Gu Dasao both charged out and fought desperately to retrieve him and carry him back to their own lines. Seeing that Hu Sanniang could not match Qiongying, Gu Dasao drew her twin swords and rode forward to join the fight. Three female generals, six arms, four steel swords, and one painted halberd—each mounted on horseback, meeting the others—like jade flakes tossed by the wind, like scattered snow and blossoms of ice. The soldiers on both sides watched until their eyes were dazzled. The three women fought for over twenty exchanges. Then Qiongying thrust her halberd into empty air as a feint, wheeled her horse, and rode away. Hu Sanniang and Gu Dasao gave chase together. Qiongying reined in her halberd with her left hand, took a stone in her right, twisted her slender waist, and cast a sidelong glance from her starlike eyes. Taking careful aim at Hu Sanniang, she let fly a single stone, which struck Hu Sanniang squarely on the right wrist. Smarting with pain, Hu Sanniang dropped one of her swords and wheeled her horse back to her own formation. Seeing that Hu Sanniang had been hit, Gu Dasao broke off from Qiongying and rode to her aid. Qiongying reined in her horse and pursued. On the other side, Sun Xin flew into a rage. He brandished his twin maces and spurred his horse forward. Before the two could engage, Qiongying had already flung a stone. With a clang, it struck squarely on his brass lion helmet. Sun Xin was greatly alarmed and did not dare advance. He hastily withdrew to his own formation to protect Wang Ying and Hu Sanniang, and led his troops in retreat.
Qiongying was about to press her pursuit when suddenly a cannon boomed. It was late February; willow-tops fluttered their banners, and beyond the flowers horses whinnied incessantly. From behind the hillside charged a force of soldiers—Lin Chong, Sun An, and the infantry chieftain Li Kui, acting on Song Jiangming's orders, had led troops to meet them. The two armies collided, drums thundering and banners shaking, both ranks shouting incessant battle cries. On one side, "Leopard Head" Lin Chong, gripping his eighteen-foot snake-spear, took the lead on horseback; on the other, "Quiver-Point" Qiongying, seizing her square-heeled painted halberd, spurred her horse forward. Lin Chong saw that she was a woman and roared: "How dare that wretched slut resist the armies of Heaven!" Qiongying made no reply, but grasping her halberd and spurring her horse, charged straight at Lin Chong. Lin Chong leveled his spear to meet her. The two horses crossed, weapons clashed. After countless exchanges, Qiongying could no longer hold him off. She feinted a weakness, thrust her halberd in a false strike, then wheeled her horse and fled east. Lin Chong gave chase. Sun An, in the front of the southern army, saw Qiongying's banner and shouted: "General Lin, do not pursue—beware of treachery!" But Lin Chong, supremely skilled, would not listen, and spurred his horse in hot pursuit. Across the green, grassy plain, eight hooves flew like whirling cups and clashing cymbals, the wind whipping past like a spinning gust. Seeing Lin Chong draw close, Qiongying raised her halberd feebly in her left hand, and with her right reached into her embroidered pouch, turned her body, took aim at Lin Chong's face from near range, and flung a stone. Lin Chong, sharp-eyed and quick-handed, deflected it with the shaft of his spear. Qiongying, seeing she had missed, readied a second stone. Her hand flew—truly like a shooting star or lightning bolt—the stone coming with a force to make ghosts weep and spirits tremble, aimed again at Lin Chong. Lin Chong could not dodge in time; it struck his face, blood streaming freely, and he dragged his spear back to his own lines. Qiongying reined in her horse and pursued.
Sun An was about to advance when he saw his own ranks part to let through five hundred infantry, led by five fierce hand-to-hand combatants: Li Kui, Lu Zhishen, Wu Song, Xie Zhen, and Xie Bao. Li Kui brandished his twin battle-axes and charged straight at her, shouting: "Have some manners, you woman!" Qiongying saw his ferocity and flung a stone at Li Kui, striking him square on the forehead. Li Kui was startled, but his hide was tough and his bones hard—it only hurt, without breaking the skin. Qiongying, seeing she could not bring him down, galloped back into formation. Li Kui flew into a rage, his whiskers bristling, his demonic eyes bulging, and with a great roar he crashed straight in. Lu Zhishen, Wu Song, Xie Zhen, and Xie Bao, fearing Li Kui would come to harm, charged together. Sun An could not hold them back. Qiongying, seeing them all bearing down on her, flung another stone and brought Xie Zhen tumbling to the ground. Xie Bao, Lu Zhishen, and Wu Song rushed to his aid. Li Kui on his side pressed on regardless. Qiongying, seeing him draw near, hastily flew another stone, again striking Li Kui's forehead. Only after being wounded twice did blood finally flow. Li Kui was an iron man through and through—his dark face streaked with crimson, he still raged like fire, swinging his twin axes as he crashed into the formation, hacking at the northern soldiers at will. On the other side, Sun An, seeing Qiongying enter the formation, rallied his troops and charged. Just then Nouri arrived with Xu Wei and eight other officers at the head of the main army, and the two sides fell into a chaotic melee. Lu Zhishen and Wu Song on the southern side rescued Xie Zhen and turned back to cut into the northern formation. Xie Bao, supporting his brother, could not fight effectively; the northern troops caught up, threw out their trip-ropes, and dragged both Xie Zhen and Xie Bao off bound into their lines. The infantry was routed and fled. But Sun An fought fiercely and with a single sword-stroke cut the northern general Tang Xian from his horse. Nouri was struck in the neck by a stray arrow from one of Sun An's soldiers and tumbled from his horse; Xu Wei and the others fought desperately to get him back onto his mount.
When Qiongying and the other generals saw Nouri struck by the arrow, they hastily beat the gong to withdraw. From the south, more Song troops arrived, led by a rider in the vanguard—"Featherless Arrow" Zhang Qing. In the camp he had heard from the mounted scout that a woman general in the northern army, who flung stones, had wounded Hu Sanniang and others. Zhang Qing was astonished at the report, reported to Song Xianfeng, and hastily donned his armor, mounted his horse, and led troops here to meet them, determined to see this woman vanguard for himself. But Qiongying had already withdrawn, protecting Nouri, and turning through the long forest, made for Xiangyuan. Zhang Qing sat on his horse gazing after her in frustration. A poem attests to this:
The fair one turns her horse, her embroidered banner streaming,
Soldiers and generals all in a flurry.
She leads them into the long woods and vanishes from sight,
Hidden among the flowers, behind her rouge and silk.
At that moment Sun An, seeing Xie Zhen and Xie Bao captured and Lu Zhishen, Wu Song, and Li Kui having cut into the enemy formation, wished to rally his troops and pursue, but the sky was growing dark. He had no choice but to join Zhang Qing in protecting Lin Chong and withdraw the army back to the main camp.
Song Jiang was holding a council in his tent, having the Divine Physician An Daoquan attend to Wang Ying. When the other commanders came forward to look at Wang Ying, they found that not only his foot was injured, but his head and face had also been gashed. After An Daoquan had applied his bandages, he went to treat Lin Chong. Song Jiang learned that Xie Zhen, Xie Bao, and Li Kui had been captured and their whereabouts were unknown. He was deeply troubled. Before long, Wu Song arrived with Li Kui, both covered in blood from head to foot, and entered the camp to see Song Jiang. Wu Song recounted: "Your younger brother saw Li Kui carried away by battle-fury, recklessly pressing forward, so I fought alongside him, cutting a path of blood through the northern army all the way to the city wall. We found the northern army binding Xie Zhen and Xie Bao, about to take them into the city. We two killed the soldiers and seized Xie Zhen and Xie Bao back, but Xu Wei and other large forces came in pursuit and recaptured Xie Zhen and Xie Bao. We then cut another path of blood and arrived here empty-handed. Only Lu Zhishen is nowhere to be found." When Song Jiang heard this, tears filled his eyes. He sent men in all directions to search for news of Lu Zhishen's whereabouts, and ordered An Daoquan to treat Li Kui. By now it was dusk. Song Jiang counted his soldiers and found more than three hundred had been lost. He had the camp gates tightly closed, posted sentries, and nothing further happened that night.
The next morning, the soldiers reported that there was no news of Lu Zhishen at all. Song Jiang grew even more troubled. He then sent Yue He, Duan Jingzhu, Zhu Gui, and Yu Baosi, each leading a party of light and agile soldiers, to search in four directions. Song Jiang wished to lead his forces in an assault on the city, but since his chieftains had all been wounded, he had no choice but to hold his troops in check. The city gates remained tightly shut, and the enemy did not come out to fight either. Two days passed in this fashion. Then Yu Baosi captured a spy and brought him into the camp. Sun An looked at the man and recognized him as Ye Qing, a chief administrator of the northern army. Sun An said to Song Jiang: "I have heard that this man has always had a sense of honor. He came out of the city alone—there must be some reason behind it." Song Jiang ordered the soldiers to untie him and called him forward. Ye Qing kowtowed repeatedly to Song Jiang and said: "I have a matter of great secrecy. I beg the Commander to dismiss those on either side so that I may report the details in full." Song Jiang replied: "My brothers here all share one heart and one mind. Speak freely." Then Ye Qing said: "In the city, Wu Li was struck by a poisoned arrow on the battlefield some days ago. The poison has taken hold and he is delirious. The physicians in the city have been unable to cure him. I took advantage of this, claiming to be seeking a physician, to come out of the city and gather intelligence." Song Jiang then asked: "How have the two generals you captured been treated?" Ye Qing replied: "This one feared for the two generals' lives. Taking advantage of Wu Li's delirium, I forged a general's order and had the two generals placed under temporary detention. They are both safe and well." Ye Qing then recounted in full the matter of how Qiongying's foster parents, Fu Shen and his wife, had been killed and their property seized by Tian Hu, and all concerning Qiongying. When he finished, he wept bitterly.
When Song Jiang heard this account, he found it deeply pitiable. But since Ye Qing was a general of the northern army, he feared some treacherous scheme and was filled with doubt. Then An Daoquan stepped forward and said to Song Jiang: "A true match made by Heaven—this is no accident!" He then explained everything in detail: "General Zhang Qing dreamed last winter of a scholar who asked him to teach a young woman the art of throwing stones. The scholar also told her that she was his destined match from a former life. When Zhang Qing awoke, he brooded on it until he fell ill. At that time, our elder brother sent me to live with Zhang Qing in Gaoping to treat him. When I examined Zhang Qing's pulse, I knew it was caused by the seven passions. After I questioned him repeatedly, General Zhang finally revealed the root of his illness, and I cured him with a single treatment. Now, hearing what Ye Qing has said, does it not match General Zhang's account perfectly?" When Song Jiang had heard this, he questioned the surrendered general Sun An. Sun An replied: "This subordinate has heard that Qiongying is not Wu Li's own daughter. One of Sun An's officers, Yang Fang, is on the closest terms with Wu Li's attendants and knows Qiongying's full story. What Ye Qing has said is certainly not false." Ye Qing added further: "My mistress Qiongying has long harbored the ambition of avenging her parents. I saw her defying the tiger's might on the battlefield and feared that when the city is destroyed, both jade and stone would be consumed together. Today I risked ten thousand deaths to come here and beg the Commander for help." Wu Yong, having heard all this, rose and studied Ye Qing closely for a long moment, then said to Song Jiang: "Judging by his grief-stricken face and sincere manner, he is truly a man of honor! Heaven aids our elder brother's success and Heaven has ordained that this filial daughter shall avenge her parents!" He then leaned close to Song Jiang's ear and said in a low voice: "Although our forces are attacking from three directions, if Tian Hu allies with the Jin people, our army will face enemies on two fronts. Even if the Jin do not come out, when Tian Hu is at his wit's end he will surely surrender to the Jin. In either case, how can we achieve total pacification? I have been devising a plan to obtain an insider. Now Heaven has provided the opportunity. With General Zhang's destined match, we need only do thus and thus—Tian Hu's head will be in Qiongying's hands. Li Kui's dream and the divine being already gave the sign. Have you not heard elder brother the saying, 'To destroy Tian Hu's clan, one must unite the Qiong arrowhead'?" Song Jiang understood and nodded his assent. He immediately summoned Zhang Qing, An Daoquan, and Ye Qing and gave them secret instructions. The three men received their orders and departed.
Now the soldiers guarding Xiangyuan saw only Ye Qing returning, shouting loudly, "Open the gates quickly! I am Ye Qing, a lieutenant under Lord Wu, sent to seek out the healers Quan Ling and Quan Yu." The soldiers guarding the gates immediately went to the headquarters to beat the drum and report. In short order, the order-tally was sent out, and the city gates were opened. Ye Qing led Quan Ling and Quan Yu into the city. When they arrived before the headquarters of the Imperial Uncle, the order came from within summoning the healers to enter and treat the patient. Ye Qing accompanied Quan Ling into the headquarters. Among the attendants accompanying the army, they reported to the Commandery Princess Qiongying, who brought Quan Ling into the inner chambers to pay respects to her. After this, they went straight to the bedside of Wu Li, where he was seen breathing with only the faintest thread of breath. Quan Ling first felt his pulse, then applied medicine externally for poulticing and internally for supporting the vital constitution. Within three days, his skin gradually regained its color, and he slowly began to take food. In no more than five days, although the wound was not yet fully healed, his appetite had returned to normal. Wu Li was greatly pleased and ordered Ye Qing to summon the healer Quan Ling into the headquarters to pay respects. Wu Li said to Quan Ling, "Thanks to your divine skill in treating me, the wound is now gradually healing. In days to come, I shall share wealth and honor with you." Quan Ling bowed and thanked him, saying, "This humble man's crude skills are hardly worth mentioning. I have a younger brother, Quan Yu, who has long followed me in the rivers and lakes learning martial arts. He is now here with me, preparing medicines, and I beg Your Excellency to promote him." Wu Li gave the order for Quan Yu to enter the headquarters to pay respects. Wu Li saw that Quan Yu had a most distinguished bearing and was greatly pleased. He ordered Quan Yu to wait outside the headquarters for assignment.
Quan Ling and Quan Yu bowed their thanks and left the headquarters. Four days passed, and suddenly there was a report that Song Jiang was leading troops to attack the city. Ye Qing entered the headquarters and reported to Wu Li, saying that Song Jiang's soldiers were strong and his generals brave, and that only the Commandery Princess could repel the enemy. Upon hearing this report, Wu Li immediately led Qiongying into the parade ground to muster the troops and horses. Quan Yu stepped forward to the martial hall and reported, "This humble one has received the Lord's grace and order to wait for assignment. Now that I hear the enemy's troops are at the city walls, though I am unworthy, I wish to lead troops out of the city and leave not a single one of them returning." The chief steward Ye Qing then feigned great anger toward Quan Yu and said, "How dare you make such bold claims! Do you dare to compete with me in martial arts?" Quan Yu laughed and said, "I have studied the eighteen weapons since childhood. Today I was just hoping to compete with you." Ye Qing came to report this to Wu Li. Wu Li assented and gave them spears and horses. The two men each took a spear and mounted their horses. Before the martial hall, they charged back and forth, again and again, swirling together like a single mass, tangled as one. The riders fought rider, and the horses fought horse. They battled forty or fifty bouts with neither gaining the advantage.
Now Qiongying was standing nearby, and when she saw Quan Yu's face, she was struck with suspicion in her heart, thinking, "He looks like someone I have seen somewhere before, and his spear technique is the same as mine." She thought it over, then suddenly realized with a start, "The one in my dream who taught me to hurl stones had this very face. I wonder if he can also hurl stones?" She then grasped her halter-dagger, urged her horse forward, and parted the two men with her painted halter-dagger. Qiongying did this because she feared Ye Qing might injure Quan Yu, not knowing that Ye Qing was already on their side. Qiongying leveled her halter-dagger and charged straight at Quan Yu. Quan Yu raised his spear to meet her, and the two fought another fifty-odd bouts. Qiongying suddenly wheeled her horse around and galloped toward the martial hall. Quan Yu pursued her as the situation allowed. Qiongying took a stone, turned her body, and aimed at an opening beneath Quan Yu's ribs. She hurled a single stone at him. Quan Yu had already caught on and, with his right hand, lightly caught it in his palm. When Qiongying saw that he had caught the stone, she was greatly astonished. She took a second stone and hurled it. Quan Yu saw Qiongying's hand move and hurled the stone he had just caught back at her. There was a sharp crack as it struck the stone Qiongying had thrown. Both stones shattered and fell like snowflakes.
That day, the city's generals Xu Wei and others were each assigned to guard the four gates. In the parade ground there were only officers and captains. Some suspected this man might be a spy, but since the Commandery Princess Qiongying was of royal blood and had also competed with him, and since he had been introduced by Ye Qing, a trusted lieutenant of Wu Li, how would they dare to speak up? It was plain to see that the city could not hold out much longer, and each man thought to himself that he would shift with the wind. It was also that Tian Hu was destined to be defeated, and Heaven had robbed Wu Li of his wits, making him blind and foolish. He then summoned Quan Yu to the hall, bestowed upon him armor and a horse, and ordered Quan Yu to lead two thousand troops out of the city to meet the enemy. Quan Yu bowed his thanks, obeyed the order, and rode out of the city. He routed the Song forces, returned to the city, and reported his victory. Wu Li was greatly pleased. That day he rewarded Quan Yu and let him rest. Nothing more happened that night.
The next day, the Song forces came again. Wu Li once more ordered Quan Yu to lead three thousand troops out of the city to meet the enemy. From morning until noon, they fought fiercely for a long time. Quan Yu used stones to strike the Song generals, who scattered and fled in disorder. Quan Yu rallied his troops to pursue and kill, driving them past Wuyin Mountain. Song Jiang and the others could not resist and retreated into Zhaode. Quan Yu returned victorious and entered the city to report his success. Wu Li was overjoyed. Ye Qing said, "Now that my lord has this man and the Commandery Princess Qiongying, why worry that the Song forces are fierce? Why worry that great things cannot be accomplished!" Ye Qing also said, "The Commandership Princess had long ago expressed her wish: she would only be matched with someone who could also hurl stones. Now General Quan is such a hero—he would be no disgrace to the Princess." Ye Qing urged this repeatedly, and it was also that the destined marriage bond between Qiongying and her husband had been tied by the red cord of fate, which could not be undone. Wu Li gave his consent and chose an auspicious day, the sixteenth of the third month, to prepare all the ceremonial banquets and wedding festivities, taking Zhang Qing as his son-in-law. That day was filled with music and song, brocade and embroidery, sumptuous feasts and wine, and the splendor of the bridal chamber with its flowers and candles—all this goes without saying. The master of ceremonies led the rites. Quan Yu and Qiongying, draped in red silk and brocade, bowed together before the spirits and then before Wu Li as their false father-in-law. The drums and music filled the heavens, and exotic fragrances assailed the nostrils. They were led into the bridal chamber, where they swore eternal love and devotion. Quan Yu looked at Qiongying by lamplight, and she appeared different from how she had been on the parade ground. There is a verse to the tune "Yuanhe Ling" as proof:
Her fingers were tender as lotus-root in the pond, her waist slender as the willows of Zhangtai Terrace. Where she walked, each step was worth an inch of gold; peach-blossom cheeks framed brows of emerald grace. One glance beneath the lamplight tonight—truly a jade celestial maiden descending from the peaks of Mount Wu.
On that very evening, Quan Yu and Yingying were like fish in water, like lacquer and glue—no need to say more. That night, as they lay upon the pillow, Quan Yu at last spoke his true name: he was Zhang Qing, the chief Song army general known as "Whirling-Feather Arrow." And the physician Quan Ling was none other than An Daoquan, the "Miracle-Worker Physician." Yingying also told him in full detail the wrongs she had suffered all along. The two whispered and murmured together through the night.
Two days passed. The two of them, working from within and without, poisoned Wu Li to death. They secretly summoned Xu Wei to the prefecture office for a meeting and killed him as well. The remaining officers all surrendered. Zhang Qing and Yingying issued orders: anyone in the city who leaked news would have his entire squad executed; the offender himself, whether soldier or commoner, would have his three clans annihilated. As a result, not a drop of water could leak through. They released Xie Zhen and Xie Bao, and together with Zhang Qing and Ye Qing, assigned them to guard the four city gates. An Daoquan and Ye Qing led foot soldiers out of the city to Zhaode to report to the Song vanguard commander. Wu Yong then ordered Li Gun and Wu Song, under cover of night, to protect "Sagacious Scribe" Xiao Rang and bring him to Xiangyuan to meet with Yingying and Zhang Qing. They searched for Wu Li's handwriting samples and forged documents in Wu Li's style, which Ye Qing was to carry to Weisheng, reporting to Tian Hu that the prince had taken a son-in-law by marriage, so as to act opportunistically from within. Ye Qing took the documents, took leave of Zhang Qing and Yingying, and set out for Weisheng.
Meanwhile, in Zhaode city, Song Jiang had only just dispatched Xiao Rang and An Daoquan when word arrived that Su Chao, Xu Ning and the other generals had captured Lucheng, and had sent a messenger to report the victory: "Su Chao's forces surrounded Lucheng. Chi Fang kept the city gates firmly shut and dared not come out to fight. Xu Ning and the other generals devised a plan: they had their soldiers strip naked and hurl insults to enrage the troops within the city. Every man inside wanted to fight; Chi Fang could not restrain them, so he opened the gates to do battle. The northern forces charged bravely, pouring out from all four gates. Our forces fought and retreated, luring the northern troops to scatter away from the city. Then Tang Bin suddenly burst forth from the east with his troops, while Tang Long led soldiers crashing in from the west. The garrison soldiers at the east and west gates could not close the gates in time. Tang Long and Tang Long led their soldiers into the city and seized it. Xu Ning speared Chi Fang dead. The rest of the officers were either killed or fled. Over five thousand northern soldiers were slain, three thousand war-horses captured, and more than ten thousand soldiers surrendered. Su Chao and the other generals entered the city to pacify the people and have come ahead to report the victory. The remaining civilian households, treasury holdings, and gold and silver will be recorded separately and reported." Song Jiang was overjoyed at the news. He immediately ordered a report to Prefect Chen and recorded the merits of Su Chao and the others, rewarding the messenger. He then wrote a military dispatch for them to carry back, instructing them to await the arrival of all the other armies before advancing together. The soldiers returned to Lucheng to report—no more of this.
Now it must be told that at Weisheng, in Tian Hu's illegitimate court, the provincial officials received a stream of scouts reporting: "Daoist Qiao and Sun An have both surrendered." They also reported: "Zhaode and Lucheng have fallen." The provincial officials immediately reported this to Tian Hu. Tian Hu was greatly alarmed. He was deliberating with his many officers when suddenly it was reported that Ye Qing, the deputy general guarding Xiangyuan, had arrived carrying a letter from the Imperial Uncle. Tian Hu ordered him to be brought in.
It was because of Ye Qing's arrival that—within Weisheng city, the gathered bandits were vanquished; in Wuxiang County, the rebel king was taken alive. How Tian Hu responded upon reading Wu Li's memorial—let us listen to the explanation in the next chapter.
