Commentary on the Three Character Classic
At the beginning of human life, human nature is fundamentally good. By nature people are similar; through habit they grow far apart.
If one is not taught, his nature will deteriorate. The way of teaching lies in giving undivided attention.
In the past, the mother of Mencius chose a neighborhood to live in. When her son did not study, she cut through the warp on her loom.
Dou Yanshan had the right method. He taught his five sons, and all of them became famous.
To raise a child without teaching him is the father's fault; to teach without strictness is the teacher's indolence.
If a child does not study, this is not as it should be. If he does not study when young, what will he do when old?
If jade is not carved, it will not become a vessel; if a man does not study, he will not understand principle.
As a son of man, in the time of youth, draw near to teachers and friends, and practice rites and etiquette.
Huang Xiang, at nine years of age, was able to warm his parents' bed. Filial devotion to one's parents is what one should uphold.
Kong Rong, at four years of age, was able to yield the larger pears. Fraternal deference toward elders should be understood early.
Begin with filial piety and fraternal duty; next pursue knowledge of numbers and names.
From one to ten, from ten to hundred, from hundred to thousand, from thousand to myriad.
The Three Powers are Heaven, Earth, and Man. The Three Luminaries are the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars.
The Three Bonds: between ruler and subject there is duty; between father and son there is affection; between husband and wife there is harmony.
They are called spring and summer, autumn and winter—these four seasons revolve without end.
They are called south, north, west, and east—these four directions correspond to the center.
Water, fire, wood, metal, and earth—these Five Elements are rooted in number.
Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness—these Five Constants must not be disturbed.
Rice, millet, grain, wheat, panic grass, and sorghum—these six grains are what people eat.
Horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, dogs, and swine—these six domestic animals are what people rear.
They are called joy, anger, grief, and pleasure; love, hate, and desire—these are the seven emotions.
Gourd-skin, clay, leather, wood, stone, metal, and silk and bamboo—these are the eight sounds of music.
Great-great-grandfather, great-grandfather, grandfather, father, oneself, son, grandson, great-grandson, and great-great-grandson—these nine generations constitute human relations.
Between father and son there is affection; between husband and wife there is compliance; the elder brother is friendly, the younger brother is respectful; the elder is kind, the younger is obedient; the ruler is respected, the minister is loyal. These ten duties are shared by all.
In the instruction of the young, one must be thorough. Explain carefully the glosses, and make clear the punctuation.
For those who study, there must be a beginning. From the Classic of Filial Piety to the Four Books:
The *Analects* consists of twenty chapters. The assembled disciples recorded the good words.
The *Mencius* consists of seven chapters. It expounds the Way and Virtue, and discusses benevolence and righteousness.
The *Doctrine of the Mean* was composed by Kong Ji. "Central" means not biased; "constant" means not changing.
The *Great Learning* was composed by Zengzi. From cultivating the self to governing the state in peace.
When the Classic of Filial Piety is understood and the Four Books are mastered, then one may begin to read the Six Classics.
The *Book of Poetry*, the *Book of Documents*, the *Book of Changes*, the *Rites*, and the *Spring and Autumn Annals*—these are called the Six Classics and should be studied.
There is the *Lianshan*, there is the *Guicang*, and there is the *Zhouyi*—the three versions of the Changes are fully explained.
There are the canons, the counsels, the instructions, and the commands—these are the profound parts of the *Book of Documents*.
Our Duke of Zhou composed the *Rites of Zhou*. He set forth the six codes, preserving the framework of governance.
The two Dai—the Elder and the Younger—annotated the *Record of Rites*. They transmitted the sage's words, and the rites and music were complete.
There are the Airs, the Elegantiae, and the Hymns—these are called the Four Sections of the Poetry, and should be chanted and recited.
After the *Book of Poetry* ceased, the *Spring and Autumn Annals* was composed. It conveyed praise and blame, distinguishing good from evil.
The Three Commentaries are the *Gongyang*, the *Zuoshi*, and the *Guliang*.
When the classics are understood, then one may read the philosophers. Grasp the essentials and record their deeds.
The Five Philosophers are Xun, Yang, Wang Tong, Laozi, and Zhuangzi.
When the classics and the philosophers are mastered, read the histories. Examine the genealogies, and know the beginning and end of each dynasty.
From Fuxi and Shennong to the Yellow Emperor—these are called the Three Sovereigns, who lived in the ancient age.
Tang and Yu are called the Two Emperors. They yielded the throne to each other, and their era was called a time of flourishing governance.
The Xia had Yu, the Shang had Tang, and the Zhou had King Wen and King Wu—these are called the Three Kings.
The Xia passed the throne to the son, making it a family domain. After four hundred years, the Xia altar was destroyed.
Tang attacked the Xia; the state was called Shang. After six hundred years, it perished with Zhou.
King Wu of Zhou began to punish Zhou. The Zhou lasted eight hundred years—the longest of all.
When the Zhou moved east, the royal authority fell. They brandished weapons and valued eloquence.
Beginning with the Spring and Autumn period and ending with the Warring States, the Five Hegemons were powerful, and the Seven Warlords emerged.
The Ying clan of Qin began to annex the states. It was passed to the second generation, then Chu and Han contended.
Gaozu arose and the Han dynasty was established. Until Emperor Ping, Wang Mang usurped the throne.
Guangwu arose, founding the Eastern Han. After four hundred years, it ended with Emperor Xian.
Wei, Shu, and Wu contended for the Han throne. They were called the Three Kingdoms, continuing through the Two Jin.
Song and Qi followed, Liang and Chen succeeded. They were the Southern Dynasties, with their capital at Jinling.
The Northern Wei of the Yuan clan split into East and West. The Zhou of Yuwen and the Qi of Gao.
Then came the Sui, who unified the realm. It did not pass to a second generation, and the line of succession was lost.
Gaozu of Tang raised an army of righteousness. He put an end to the chaos of the Sui and founded the state's foundation.
It was transmitted twenty times, for three hundred years. Liang destroyed it, and the state was changed.
Liang, Tang, Jin, Han, and Zhou—these are called the Five Dynasties, each having its cause.
The flourishing Song arose, receiving the Zhou's abdication. It was transmitted eighteen times, and north and south were mixed together.
The seventeen histories are all contained here. They record order and chaos, and one may know rise and decline.
Those who study history should examine the authentic records. To understand the past and present is as if one had seen it with one's own eyes.
Recite with the mouth and ponder in the heart. Devote yourself to it morning and evening.
In the past, Zhongni studied under Xiang Tuo. Ancient sages and worthies still applied themselves diligently to study.
The Zhongling of Zhao read the *Analects of Lu*. Although he was already an official, he studied with diligence.
They unrolled books of woven rushes and cut bamboo slips. Although they had no books, they knew how to strive.
They tied their hair to a beam and pierced their thighs with an awl. Although no one taught them, they were diligent through hardship.
They studied by the light of bagged fireflies and by reflected snow. Although their families were poor, they did not cease studying.
They studied while carrying firewood and while hanging books on the horns of cattle. Although their bodies were weary, they still studied bitterly.
Su Laoquan, at twenty-seven, began to rouse himself and read books. Although he was already old, he still regretted the delay. You young ones should seek instruction early.
As for Liang Hao, at eighty-two he answered before the great court and excelled over many scholars. Although he succeeded late, all marveled at him. You young ones should set your will.
Ying, at eight years of age, could compose poetry. Mi, at seven years of age, could compose a rhapsody on chess. Their keen understanding was admired by others. You who study in youth should emulate them.
Cai Wenji could distinguish the tones of the zither. Xie Daoyun could compose and recite verse. These were women, yet they were intelligent. You men should accomplish something while still young.
They were raised as prodigents and appointed to official posts. Although they were young, they already served in office. You who study in youth, strive to achieve it. Those who accomplish anything will be like this.
Dogs keep watch at night; roosters announce the dawn. If one does not study, how can one be a human being?
Silkworms spin silk; bees brew honey. If a man does not study, he is inferior even to creatures.
Study when young, and act when grown. Above, serve your ruler; below, bless the people.
Spread your name and glorify your parents. Shine before you, and leave a legacy after you.
Others bequeath to their children a chest full of gold; I teach my child one single classic.
Diligence brings merit, idleness brings nothing good. Take this as a warning; you should strive with all your might.
