🗺️ Where to exchange money

🏦
Chinese banks

Bank of China (中国银行) is the best for currency exchange — official rates, transparent fees. Available at major airports and cities. Keep your receipt.

✈️
Airport exchange counters

Available at all international airports. Convenient but with slightly higher commissions. Good for small amounts on arrival.

🏪
Licensed exchange shops

In major tourist areas (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou) you'll find licensed exchange shops. Look for the sign "外汇兑换" (currency exchange).

🏧
ATM machines

Bank of China and ICBC ATMs accept foreign cards. Limit is usually ¥2,500–3,000/day. Best for smaller amounts with reasonable fees.

🏨
Hotels

Many large hotels offer currency exchange for guests. Rates are acceptable but usually higher than banks.

💡 Money-saving tips

Don't exchange at markets

Some merchants offer "attractive" rates for currency — this is unofficial and may be a scam.

Compare rates first

Check the official Bank of China rate at www.boc.cn before exchanging anywhere.

Keep your exchange receipts

To convert yuan back to your currency when leaving, you need the original exchange receipt.

Exchange limits

Exchange limits and document rules are set by official regulations and may change. Always bring your passport when exchanging and confirm the limit with the bank.

Avoid street exchangers

Never exchange with people on the street, even if they offer better rates — it is illegal.
