Haima 海马汽车
Haikou, Hainan, China
Zhu Jing
Zhu Jing returned as Haima's chairman in 2019 in an effort to rescue the company from a severe financial crisis that had forced it to sell real-estate assets and its research institute to cover accumulated losses. The company now runs a much-reduced operation almost entirely reliant on export markets after its domestic China sales nearly collapsed.
📖 About the company
Haima was founded in 1992 as a joint venture between the Hainan provincial government and Mazda of Japan (its name derives from "Hainan Mazda"), before state-owned FAW Group acquired Mazda's stake in 2006. The company peaked in the mid-2000s with over 150,000 annual sales built on Mazda-derived technology, but has been in steep decline since, selling off real-estate assets and its research institute to cover losses and repeatedly coming close to delisting. Haima today is a much-diminished company drawing over 80% of revenue from exports, while its domestic China sales have fallen to a marginal few hundred cars a year, amid a fourth straight year of net losses. Haima should now be understood as a niche export-focused survivor rather than a mainstream player in the Chinese market.
